How To Witness To Cults

How do I evangelize my relatives including my mother when they think they are saved. They are in a cult called The United House of Prayer where it is their practice to worship and praise their Bishop and call on him to save them. I think they believe he has a new, New Testiment for them.

Sounds like some Baptist churches I've been to.

Cluny: "I've been trying to witness to people who think they are saved on these blogs for years.

Sisyphusian task, isn't it?"

I agree that the task is difficult, and seemingly impossible, but there are a few who listen to the truth of the Bible and are able to separate it from the doctrines of men.

By the way, it's "sisyphean", not "sisyphusian".

francis, good points you gave. It is so important to know Scripture and all the topics that can be brought out. The cults are prepared. They know what topics to speak about. The most obvious one is to strip Jesus Christ of His divinty. That is the most common. Once they attack the humanity of Christ, they will make ground beef out of you unless you know what Scripture says and why it says what it does. So I differ then you on that one. The word of God makes doctrine, and if we read the context of why God said what He did, at some appoint time, we will have the right doctrine. The Word of God makes doctrine, not the other way around.

Start by asking them if they believe the bible. If they believe the bile then you have a common ground from which you can both share.

It should be expected that thier interpretation of certain verses / [assages may differ from you.

What you need to establish first is not the context ( which always changes) but the doctrine ( which never changes)

Steven G, here is what you said,

"Do not get help from the people on these blogs in such matters"

Why should she listen to you? You are on these blogs yourself giving advice. In fact, she should not listen to you, since you condemn the Church of Christ. Believers are never told to condemn the Church of Christ. They are commanded to edify the Church that Christ build. Why should anyone listen to you?

Candice: "Not all denominations are cults."

On the contrary, all denominationsal churches are cults each having their own traditions, rituals, ways of living, interpretations of the bible, and are chained to the government.

If you are truly concerned about their souls, ask God through your prayers to bring someone into your life to help you. Don't do it alone being a babe in Christ.

Do not get help from the people on these blogs in such matters. You'll get many opinions as you can tell just by reading the responses below. (by the way, I know the thoughts of some of you who reply to this post).

The Word of God is complete and He has left us with His complete will and purpose. His Word points to salvation, of how He will save and destroy. There's one teaching by Christ that many will hate or have no knowledge of and it is found in Matthew 10:34-36,

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."

We must only turn to God for wisdom and guidance when witnessing. Afterall, salvation is 100% His property and He does as He pleases.

well Val we live in the end of days ...soon Christ will return although not soon enough

until then Christ WARNED in the LAST DAYS which we are living many will deceive in the name of Christ

although curious this "house of prayer" sounds exactly like rcc

Apostles stated to work out your OWN salvation not others. Pray that you and your family are kept from evil
---Rhonda on 2/11/12

Be polite, but firm, and tell them they need to really get saved, that their bishop is Not Jesus The Savior, and that their bishop is committing sin for letting people idolize himself rather than directing the people up to Christ the Savior. When the blind lead the blind, then both will fall into the ditch.

Not all denominations are cults. We need to quit labeling them "cults" because they donot mesh with your denomination. However if this church is truly teaching opposite of God then yes point it out. Every church has bylaws & "rules" and honestly God didn't set those rules into motion. Man did.
---Candice on 2/11/12

Val, if you are still at a baby stage in your Christian walk I suggest not to witness to any cults. With them you have to be ready to preach the Truth before you can try to preach to them. The cults practice very hard what they are going to say and you have to be ready to answer why you believe in what you believe.
---Mark_V. on 2/11/12

You need to ask if they believe the Bible to be the guide to all truth. If they do not then it will be difficult to say anything for with out the word of GOD the minds of men are without protection from the lies of the devil.

Pray for wisdom.

I did look up the group [The United House of Prayer for All People of the Church of the Rock of the Apostolic Faith] on the Internet and found their web page, they are a very strange group with Head Quarters Church on M street NW in Washington DC. They have a lot of rules including what to wear to church and what doors to use to enter the building and the sanctuary, active in about 20 states USA, ethnicity Black, Holiness, Pentecostal. Founded by a self proclaimed Bishop who used to be a railroad cook, with no formal theological training, claimed God only uses one man in the world at a time he was the one, founder deceased. Current activities Black community housing programming.

so what is heretical about their teachings? by the way if one reads their creeds they are not much different then most protestants and catholics.
---anonymous on 2/10/12

I've been trying to witness to people who think they are saved on these blogs for years.

Sisyphusian task, isn't it?

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 2/10/12

I would use Galatians Ch1. It talks about how even if Paul (himself) were to change to a different gospel that they should not listen to him.
