Having worked with Jr. Hi. students for over 18 years I must have been asked this question by parents and students a million times.

Here is the bottom line, music in itself is neutral. Basically there are no good or bad notes, it would be like saying that a C sharp is bad and a B flat is good.

However music is more than notes, it's also made up of words and messages. Take away the notes and what do you have left?

Now compare these words and messages to 1 Corinthians 10:31, is there any conflict? If so guard yourself, if not enjoy the music. Rev. Tom Zegan CCHt.

The ONLY way to understand what is worldy music, is to travel the world

In different parts of the world the music has different beats.

The number 1 use of music is the world is not to praise God, but to record human history

I grew up loving Pop and Rock music from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. I started into "Christian rock" in the mid-80's. Then, I got into Classical Music shortly after, which I still love. I listen to Worship Music, too. But, throughout the years, I've been back-and-forth with Secular Pop and Rock. Right now, I have literally weeded out my Secular music collection (mp3's mostly) to only a couple of handfuls of songs. They're most very "mellow" or "mild" in melody, without heavy rock drumming. The lyrics are, what I call, "family friendly", e.g. John Denver's "Sunshine On My Shoulders", etc. I steer away from secular songs that would pose a temptation to sin for me.

scott1, so you say hymns are made in bars? really? how about proving that one. just a little common sense here scott1. who wrote amazing grace? maybe a pub in england or france..how disgusting.

\being "off the cuff" is good sometimes because it allows God to speak, but it also can create chaos and can become a ritual in and of itself if God is not in it.
---Scott1 on 10/15/12\\

God is never in confusion or people doing something just because they want to do it at that moment.

Freewheeling spontaneity is NEVER how worship in the Bible is described.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Yes, but it is NOT ok to like go to a bar on Saturday night and go to church on Sunday. God says you're either for Him or against Him. Can't be a "part-time" Christain.
---angel on 10/17/12

//I even know some who play at the bar saturday night and church sunday. God is not pleased with that.// Shira

Many hymns were originally bar tunes. sorry. I like hymns.
---Scott1 on 10/17/12

the music thing has been debated here several times. It always gets my attention as some listen to rock music in church. wow, I would probably not be able to know I was in church and not a bar. I have heard that kids will go to church if you can get them worked up with rock music. We do need to be careful what our ears hear and what our eyes see. I even know some who play at the bar saturday night and church sunday. God is not pleased with that. contemporary is ok if you like it but I'll stick with the old stuff..it works everytime. From genesis to revalation its power divine. I was filled with the spirit when He saved my soul. I'll stick with the old stuff all the way til I get home.

Watch the words. Be careful what you take in. Pray before.

richardc, i think that you might be stretching there. if i engage in extra marital affairs or partake in illicit drug use, my mouth might say glory to god, but my actions have already negated that noise.

I guess they thought that spontaneity and lack of preparation was somehow more spiritual.

---Cluny on 10/14/12 "Some Renaissance churchmen considered polyphony to be "worldly" and wanted no music in church but plainchant, once upon a time."

When I relocated, I visited a fellowship that forbade intruments of any kind, only songs offered by members "off the cuff".

While that alone was sufficient to keep me from returning, I did not notice anything peculiar other than that.

Had they been more "conventional", I might have even remembered the message they preached.
---Phil on 10/14/12

What do you mean by "contemporary, world-centered music"?

There was a time that even orchestral music was called that.

Some Renaissance churchmen considered polyphony to be "worldly" and wanted no music in church but plainchant, once upon a time.

"Test all things, hold fast what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21) Instead of just going along with things and just reacting the way they would control you to react and treat them . . . test a problem or anything for the good you and God can have. And test if some question is even worth our attention.

Like this . . . instead of just going along for a ride with some song, the way it would take you while you are only being passive, be more busy with testing for what God has for you.
---willie_c: on 10/14/12

Music is used for many things:
1: To record historical events
2: To praise God
3: To call attention to national and world wide injustice
4: To draw disciples for satan with lyrics that endorse sinful behaviour

It is the last one, the one with lyrics that calls us away from christ and his law and love to do the bidding of the devil that we should avoid
---francis on 10/14/12

Locate Christian Employment

It is not listening to the music that is the problem, it is what that music does to you. If it has a bad effect on you, gives you thoughts and feelings that are bad then the music is bad for you.

Most Christians like music other than choruses, hymns and gospel music and our tastes vary but some kinds are obviously bad for Christians and those are the ones we should shun and not have in our homes. Our common sense usually tells us which they are.

Phil "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful, all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak." 1Cr 6:12>1Cr 10:23>1Cr 8:9
---Josef on 10/14/12

Just as with the words we read, speak, and listen to, it is okay for Christians to hear and produce clean music that is "worldly" in that it is not God-centered. Art is also in this category.
