In Christ we are no longer slaves to sin. Yet, as a new creature in Christ, you are (only if you surrender yourself to God) Romans 6' instruments of Righteousness. YET, even that, Markv, YOU STILL SIN.

Those who sin are a slave to sin. So your theory states you are still a slave to sin even though you profess it be saved. You admit you sin Markv, even now. It it now free will? You claim God now gives free will to the saved, to choose sin or obedience? When you SIN, as a Christian, then your theory is you are still in bondage to sin. You weren't then SET FREE from the power of sin as scripture teaches?

You can't have it two ways Markv. You overlook the power of the CROSS, and have no clue what being set free from sin even means.
---kathr4453 on 3/3/13

John 8:9 "And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst."

The conscience of the scribes and Pharisees convicted them when they searched in themselves for the truth, the answer to Jesus saying: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." Conscience, reason and understanding are seen in the above. They all knew that none of them were perfect and without sin, that stoning the woman for a sin would have been an injustice.
---Nana on 3/3/13

Markv, no scripture states one's WILL is in bondage to sin....anymore than your WILL now is in bondage to RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Your conscience is within your will. God put a conscience in all men to KNOW both good and evil. The conscience in man awoke to both -good and evil when Adam fell. His conscience then KNEW he was naked, and he his. If his conscience was then dead, he would not have known he was naked and hid.

Now man seers his own conscience, through choice. We are not born with a DEAD conscience.

Your interpretation of death takes things beyond what scripture teaches. YOU need to believe a lie, because your Calvinism doctrine can't survive without it.
---kathr4453 on 3/3/13

Kathr, more accusations. you say,

"us HIS CHURCH. "doing" anything at all, to a Calvinist is a betrayal to his false doctrine."

you are very wrong. The Bible teaches everyone has a choice, and will be judge by his choices. You are free to move around. No one has a gun to your head. But you will not move towards Christ while lost. Because your will is in bondage to sin, your father is the devil and the desires of your father you want to do. God has to make you able. You love Him because He first loved you, if you are even saved. If not, this answers mean nothing to you.
You speak with a fork tongue, promoting free will, and cannot show one passage where God said He gave man a will that is free.
---Mark_V. on 3/3/13

Cluny:

Nevertheless, if teachers are teaching children something in a way that they get an impression that is diametrically opposite from what the church claims to teach, this means that the teachers are doing a pretty bad job!

I wonder why John said commandments, and NOT the 10 commandments...or why one just assumes commandments mean THE TEN Commandments.

John was ALL of GRACE and not LAW, and God surely spoke those words through him, right here to us HIS CHURCH.

"doing" anything at all, to a Calvinist is a betrayal to his false doctrine.

We are EXERCISED, to be able to discern good and evil, bringing us to maturity, eating meat and not just baby food. Exercise takes WORK, that we participate in. This EXERCISE comes through trials.
---kathr4453 on 3/2/13

Well, Geraldine , would free will be involved here or not?

If you have free will to choose to do God's will, then, everything must be measured against the word of God. Now we know satan used God's word to tempt Jesus, so it can get tricky. Remember the Holy Spirit is WITHIN, where Satan is without. Learn to discern the difference.

Those who believe they have no free will to make responsible choices, are the ones in bondage to satan, because he's bound their hands, and severed their conscience. Like Markv once said, God's ELECT are never tested, because God already knows what they will do.

Seems like there will be NO CROWN for these guys. Read James 1...

They will be known as the crownless arrogant elect.
---kathr4453 on 3/2/13

Samuelbb, you now say to everyone,

"Those who do not obey GOD or love his commandments are not Christians."

So are you saying you are not a Christian? Not saved? and that there is no Truth in you?
Because you could not possibly be telling us you are perfect and never sin, or could you? Here is what the word of God says,
"If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the Truth is not in us" (1 John 1:8).
So what you are saying is that you have been deceived, and really because the Truth is not in you. So are you without sin? Do you love God and obey Him, by keeping all His commandments?
---Mark_V. on 3/1/13

Those who do not obey GOD or love his commandments are not Christians.

1Jo 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Jo 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

1Jo 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

The kingdom of heaven will be composed of the welldoers, not just the wellwishers.
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."
---Nana on 2/28/13

we do works because we are born again. we don't do works to "earn" anything. men don't have the mental capacity to be good enough for heaven without being born of the Spirit. God sent His Son to die for us and that is the only way one can ever ever get to heaven.
---shira4368 on 2/28/13

James L, in fairness you say,

"In fairness, virtually every "church" teaches that works are a necessary component for final salvation"

In fairness you are completely wrong. Salvation is by grace through faith. That is salvation. Not a one of us is dancing around. We all know the Truth. Without the grace of God you get nothing. Eph 2:9 tells us "not of works lest anyone should boast" no dancing around that point. We don't boast on the salvation we received. Don't speak for my Church, you do not know everything. The word of God is very clear.
For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good work, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them"
---Mark_V. on 2/28/13

\\This sounds like justification by works to me\\
---StrongAxe on 2/27/13

In fairness, virtually every "church" teaches that works are a necessary component for final salvation

Ask virtually any christian this question - If I have faith, yet I do not have any works, will I go to heaven?

The Arminian says NO, because I would lose my salvation

The Calvinist would spend three days and three nights dancing, trying not to answer no, diverting instead to unbiblical tangents about spurious, genuine, real, fake, etc. But if they are honest and forthright, their answer would be NO

Most say faith is not enough, they just have different ways of saying it
---James_L on 2/28/13

\\This sounds like justification by works to me, and if it's NOT the official teaching of the church, they don't teach well, because very many people both in and out of the church believe they teach this.\\

When a very dear friend of us both (you know who I mean) was in a Roman Catholic school, he understood the nuns to tell him that when the priest celebrated mass, it was as if he were nailing Christ to the cross again.

When he grew up, he discovered that this was NOT the teaching of the church.

In other words, what he heard was NOT what the nun meant.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 2/27/13

Strongaxe, the five points you gave are correct concerning works. The number 2 is a big point. If you can imagine how many pedophile priest they have had and still have, that heard or still hear the confessions of many and gave them abolution, then command them to say 5 hail Mary's and 5 our Father's, then behind the close doors, they rape the very children they give absolution to. It is mind blowing how corrupt the system has become. And people still defend it because of their love for their Church. I read of one story where the child told their mom and the mom beat the child for saying such things about a priest. I'm not blaming every priest, because there have been many great man that came out of the RCC, but the system.

It was not merely doubt. The angel said that he DID NOT BELIEVE. Luke 1:20.

Cluny:

When I was young, I learned in Sunday School:
1) if you're good, you go to heaven
2) if you commit any sins, and you confess those sins to a priest, and he gives you absolution, you are forgiven of them
3) if you commit any venial sins that are unconfessed when you die, you have to work them off in purgatory for a time, then you go to heaven
4) if you commit any mortal sins that are unconfessed when you die, you go to hell.
5) if you're not baptized, you go to hell.

This sounds like justification by works to me, and if it's NOT the official teaching of the church, they don't teach well, because very many people both in and out of the church believe they teach this.

"Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool."
God offered that in return for his children's compliance with "Wash you, make you clean, put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes, cease to do evil..."

John 17:
v6 "they have kept thy word."
v17 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

Cluny, you did not show me that Zacharias was not a man of faith in the end. Only that he doubted what the angel said. He was no different then Abraham doubting God in (Gen. 15:8-13) and Abraham was a man of faith. God had just told him what he was going to inherit and Abraham wanted a sign. Why? because he too doubt God.
In the case of Zacharias he too was told by the angel Gabriel, that his prayer had been heard. Zacharias also said, "how will I know this?" And gave an excuse they were old, but he believed by faith once Elizabeth conceived. If you read the context you will know the Truth and it will set you free.

Wrong again, as in everything you say.

The Eastern Orthodox Church has NEVER taught justification by works.a

Neither has the Roman Catholic Church, for that matter.

But truth doesn't matter to someone with his mind made up, does it?

BTW, don't you just hate it when I show you from the Bible where you are wrong? It's the BIBLE that says that Zachariah was struck with silence PRECISELY because he did not believe, not I.

Only those who were saved by grace through faith in the Old T. were saved. The rest of Israel is still in unbelief. The reason no one is righteous before God without Christ is that man on his own is unrighteous, because he sins. He needs the forgiveness of sins that only comes through the Person of Jesus Christ.
"there is certainly no righteous man on the earth who does good and never sins" (Ecc. 7:20).
"For all sin and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:20).
"What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous?" (Job 15:14).
"Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before You" (Ps. 143:2).
---Mark_V. on 2/27/13

Isaiah 1:2 "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me." It is God who claims his children and those 'children' of his He spoke of in Isaiah 1 were not obedient. Did they love God? Perhaps in their own way with which God was not satisfied and so, He told them:
"Wash you, make you clean, put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes, cease to do evil,
Learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow."

Q. Do both the Holy Spirit and Satan have access to a Christian's thoughts?

A. The Holy Spirit is God. God knows our thoughts better than we do. Satan is a creature. He can't read nor does he know our thoughts, but he can read our actions to determine what we may be thinking.

Q. If so, if one of the two attempts to lead us, how do we know which one it is?

A. The Holy Spirit guides/leads by the Word of God (Scripture/Bible). Satan subtly suggests we follow courses of action that seem to be right, but are contrary to the Word of God.

Nana, of course it's good enough for you. Misterpreting every passage to no end. No one is righteous before God without the imputed righteousness of Christ. What they are is self righteous. Everyone without Christ is evil. No matter what they do in life. They continue to be separated from God. Here is what Jesus said to the Pharisees who said they had one Father God.
"Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me,.." (John 8:41,42) And this are people who claim their father is God. And guess who Jesus said was their father? The devil (v. 8:44).
Do the lost love Christ? No they don't. Why? Because God is not their Father otherwise they would love Christ.

John 3:20 "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."
Those doing evil know who they are and what they do, so they avoid the 'light' as wrttten.
Even John 3:19 indicates their knowledge of the light in their choosing, "men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil."
Just like the thief who under the cover of darkness does his deed.(Matthew 13:25)

1 John 2:29 "If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him."
Good enough for me.

Cluny, of course you will never agree either, because the Eastern Orthodox belief in Justification by works, just as the RCC. Why? Because you are an image of them. That is why you speak for them. When I speak to Nana it is speaking to an Eastern orthodox member, because he claims like you he is not RCC. That is why you jump in. I'm suprise Ruben hasn't join in.
God is the One who declares a sinner to be righteous and does this by crediting, by reckoning the righteousness of Jesus to the sinner. This is done by faith. That is, when the sinner puts his faith in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and trusts in Him and not himself for righteousness, then God justifies him.

And YOU are unrighteous before God, too, because the Bible says there is NONE who is righteous, no not one.

Nana, Zacharias and Elizabeth were of faith, and therefore righteous before God. You are unrighteous before God, for you condemn me for telling you the Truth. You give (John 1:9) claiming everyone can see the light, but you left (v. 10) out. Even though the light came to all man, they could not see the light for This light,
"For He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him, He came to His own and His own did not receive Him" (John 1:10) The Light does shine, but only believers can see it. To the others,
"And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" (John 3:19).
---Mark_V. on 2/25/13

Luke 1:6 "And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless."

All and always have had access to Christ or you think Christ is just a figment of your cobwebbed imagination?
1 Corinthians 10:3_4 "And did all eat the same spiritual meat, And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."
EVENMORE: John 1:9 "That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

You know not the meaning of "every man that cometh into the world".
Therefore you do not undrstand Paul saying, "they are without excuse".
---Nana on 2/24/13

Nana, first, I do not exhalt myself when I give you the truth. It's my duty as a believer. You say,
"All your ignorance Mark_V. comes from ridiculing and handicapping Man with your lips." I didn't handicap you, you are already handicapped. You say, "Most men are quite capable of discernment, even the sinner with sins "red like crimson"."
If most man can discern, why are you not able? You cannot discern the Truth. The bible says there is no one righteous without Christ, you say there is, the Bible says no one understands without Christ, and you say most man can discern the Truth. So go ahead and attack me personally, as you and others have done, those are the good works you possess.

Can Satan Read Our Mind?

NO!

He can put thoughts in, but he can't take them out.

---jerry6593 on 2/24/13

Luke 14:8_11 teaches that a man should not exalt himself, likewise Proverbs 27:2 "Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth, a stranger, and not your own lips." All your ignorance Mark_V. comes from ridiculing and handicapping Man with your lips. Most men are quite capable of discernment, even the sinner with sins "red like crimson". To him God says, "Learn to do well, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow." Those are and will be justified, 1 Peter 3:12.
---Nana on 2/23/13

Nana, that is not what the passage in (1 john 2:29) is saying. They have to be in Him before their acts can be called righteous. If they are lost and do good deeds that does not make them righteous, for no one is righteous before God without Christ imputed righteousness. Practicing righteousness are those born of God. Those not born of God give no glory to God or are they thank the Lord for their deeds. When a person is saved and does righteous deeds God gets the glory for the deeds he does.
For it is written,
"There is none righteous, no, not one" (Rom. 3:10).
"Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins" (Ecc. 7:20).

Cluny, Jesus never said that people who are good only go to heaven without Christ. You are introducing your works for salvation doctrine. Salvation is by Grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Matthew 25 does not contradict, the one way to heaven, by grace through faith. The Bible clearly says that without Christ the wrath of God is revealed against this people,
"..they are without excuse, because although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful,.." (Rom. 1:20,21).
Anything without faith is sin, even their good works. For they do not thank God are glorify Him as God. God never gets glory for the things good they do, they get the glory.

Mark_V.:

Jesus said one of the two great commandments is to love your neighbor as yourself. Anyone who does is obeying the Law of God - even if not raised in Judaism or Christianity, but nevertheless have God's laws written on their hearts (i.e. we all instinctively know right from wrong).

Otherwise, if we didn't have any clue, how could God comdemn us for breaking a law we had no idea was even there?

Read Matthew 25. Those who were praised had no idea that they were doing a good thing. Clearly, any Christian who knew his bible would know he was one of the sheep. The only people who would be so clueless as to their fates here are people who were UNFAMILIAR WITH CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS. Yet they were rewarded anyway.

Strongaxe, another example of what I am saying is the case of Pharaoh and the Egyptians, they were permitted by God to wrong the Isralites, by making the slaves suffer, torchering and killing many slaves and then releasing them that by their deliverance God's wonders might be multiplied in the land of Egypt (Ex.11:9). That those things might be taught to future generations and that His glory might be declared throughout all the earth" (Ex. 9:16). Strongaxe,

"even a pagan who feeds the sick and clothes the naked is NOT acting in an "ungodly" manner"
They are ungodly actions, God gets no glory. Anything without faith is sin,
"because although they knew God they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful.." (Rom. 1:20,21). Then say
" - he's doing EXACTLY what God WANTS him to do,"
God actions have a different purpose then man's.
When Joseph was sold by his brothers, it was a wicked act, yet we see that it was overruled not only for Joseph's good but also for the good of the brothers themselves. When traced to its source we see that God was the author. It had it's exact place in the divine plan.

Strongaxe, I agree with Christan. Many have good works for there is many kind people out there without Christ that is for sure. But here: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who surpress the truth (the truth is Christ) in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them." This passages are speaking of unbelievers. They might be good people but this wrath comes, for they are without excuse,
"Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but because futile in their thoughts.." (Rom. 1:18-21).

christan:

You said: The Dalai Lama and unbelievers of Jesus Christ everywhere has many good works to show to the world, even more than that of a Christian. Agreed?

Therefore, are you implying that those "good works" they have performed are of the Holy Spirit? I hope that's not what you're implying.

And why not?

Jesus described the final judgment in Matthew 25: he separates righteous from wicked like sheep from goats. When each asks why, it's because of how they treated others, NOT correct belief. Both were surprised at who was saved and who wasn't, because each had preconceived notions that were rudely dispelled. The Good Samaritan is also praise of a pagan Samaritan over presumably righteous Jews.

If you want a good impression of how Satan might work, C.S.Lewis 'Screwtape Letters' is a good book to read
---James on 2/16/13

pat, satan don't pick and choose "when". he is always on the attack. everywhere you turn and look, there he is. at the theatre, grocery stores, movies, bars and many more. he is the angel of light and that just means the things of satan are appealing but proverbs says it is good for a moment but the end is death.

\\cluny, it applies to my heart and your heart\\

Agreed, shira.

That's why the Psalmist sang, "Cleanse me of my secret faults. Keep Your servant from presumptous sin."

And Amos said, "You will keep the person in perfect peace whose mind is fixed on You."

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Satan knows your thoughts. How else will he know when to attack. Watch-out for prideful thoughts. Satan can and will zero in on your prideful thoughts. Can cause a lot of havoc in that department. Learn to exercise your mind. Knock wrong thinking out. Can you do this on your own? No way. Satan is stronger that you are. NEED GOD to HELP....Only the living God is stronger than the devil.+++

"Good works will be from the Holy Spirit and bad works from Satan" Esther_Aminat

The Dalai Lama and unbelievers of Jesus Christ everywhere has many good works to show to the world, even more than that of a Christian. Agreed?

Therefore, are you implying that those "good works" they have performed are of the Holy Spirit? I hope that's not what you're implying.

cluny, it applies to my heart and your heart. no one knows whats in your heart but out of the heart comes the real you. God is the one who said our heart is desperately wicked, who can know it. that includes you cluny and it includes me.

As we grow in Jesus, we do better. Our heart does not stay "desperately wicked" if Jesus is growing in us and we have "the love of God" "in our hearts", as Paul says in Romans 5:5. God's love in us changes us so we feel and think differently and better . . . with growing and our Father's correction > Hebrews 12:4-12.

God rules us in His peace > Colossians 3:15, Philippians 4:4-9, "and you will find rest for your souls" (in Matthew 11:29) as we learn to obey Jesus in our thinking. So, a basic is do not trust any thinking, way of seeing things, feelings, or decisions which are not in the peace of God ruling us. Trust God to make us successful better in this (c:

Both Holy Spirit and Satan have access to a Christian's thoughts. We will know which of the two is leading us by the works we will be led to do (The fruits). Good works will be from the Holy Spirit and bad works from Satan Galatians 5:16-25

"Do both the Holy Spirit and Satan have access to a Christian's thoughts? As an influence, Yes. He obviously influenced Ananias and his wife. Act 5:1 As one who can read a believers mind, No.
If so, if one of the two attempts to lead us, how do we know which one it is?"
"To law the and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Isa 8:20
In my own life I have come to recognize that if the voice I hear is uncertain or wavering it is mine. If it is loud, demanding or accusatory it is Satan. If it is a gentle whisper, direct and in agreement with what I know to be the Father's written word it is His Spirit.
---joseph on 2/15/13

satan is the angel of light and his purpose is to take anyone to hell that he can take. he even fools Christians. look at the sin in the world how it is always glamorized but the end is death. even the prostitute is appealing to some but the end is death or illness. actually I don't know if satan reads our minds. in that case satan knows our thoughts and somehow I don't think he knows what we think. we don't really know our hearts, it is desperately wicked.
---shira4368 on 2/14/13

Paul says there is "the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience." (in Ephesians 2:2) So, I offer that any disobedience in us, including in our minds, is connected with the working of Satan's evil spirit.

But Paul also does say > "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7) But we need to be submissive to the Holy Spirit in our minds so we have His almighty immunity against how Satan's spirit would mess with us.

Philippians 4:6-7, Colossians 3:15 > in other words, obey Him in His peace. "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

satan cannot read our minds but he knows when people sin, it starts with the eyes. what we subject our mind (thru the eyes) many times can cause us to sin. we have the old sin nature in the flesh. that is why we must guard what our eyes see, what our ears hear and bridle the tongue. when we bridle the tongues we can keep our flesh in subjection.

Bro.Mark, may God richly bless you & your household. I may did not explain well ,you are right.Take example in a weak (mindset) in pain or grief or feeling down, low point, especially maybe I am guessing here... enemy (taps into) past issues? or not nessarily Satan but, just in a state of like pain what can I say? It has been shows/ books/unfortinately, people have suffered
horrible wounding or trying to remedy a toothache years ago a friend of mine at work shot himself! So much in pain, he lived but sufffered alot afterwards.

Geraldine, I have to totally disagree with sister Pat on this topic. Satan nor the demons can read a persons mind. They can possess unbelievers to cause them to kill and murder, and the reason is that Scripture tells us the unbelievers are already doing the desires of their father the devil while lost and don't even realize it. Only God has the attribute of knowing what you are going to do before you do it. If Satan had read Jesus mind, he would not have taken over Judas to betray Jesus, nor Caiaphas to bring Jesus death. Because the death of Christ at the cross brought victory for the Lord.
Pride and all other sins are cause by man, not satan, because all sin. Comes from our sinful nature.
---Mark_V. on 2/14/13

Hello,Geraldine you know that is a very good - both questions..yes! I have had(also, bless you sis.Pat it:s true) as you said. We really have to stay in the word & built up, yes, there have been times not alot but, yes there was times felt really in pain or just sick, cancer so, yes!Satan evil whisper in my mind "just kill yourself, your daughter doesn't care about you!..nobody cares!"... right away! I jumped & got my bible & cried out to God, read it everyday & keep verses in my mind but, my memory bad but I still look them up & determine stay focus! Got to keep God 1st love, whether she comes back or NOT.thankyou, jesus!
---ELENA on 2/14/13

I really doubt that Satan can read your mind, unless you AGREE with the tempting thoughts he puts there.

However, Satan is intelligent and has the experience of centuries, so he might be able to make a good guess.

C. S. Lewis talks about this kind of thing in THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
