Explain Revelation 11:8

What does REVELATION 11:8 mean?

The place that is 'spiritually' called "Sodom and Egypt", is the same place where Yahushua (JESUS) was Crucified.

Is that city not Jerusalem??

Bro.Mark, you are correct! Evil is rampant !!! they mock us Christians seeking to live a clean living "Godly life,"now people act evil towards me and others.
We have a group of people who were yes! Abused and now, that same group (SOME NOT ALL) now this group has special priviledges

.you and me DO NOT HAVE .. liberal mind sets are abusing us the general.public.. & the BIBLE true values honor God. We can not pray in public, but things which God calls sin is OK NOW!!
Liberal life here in U.S. has a cost us alot! Total UNGODLINESS be aplauded! Rewarded even...
"What a great example for the youth!!"
---Lidia4796 on 1/21/14

Sis. Lidia, you are correct about Cuba and other countries. Many are just worse then others in certain areas. But they are all bad. The reason many believe America is worse is because America has become almost completely liberal. The demand for drugs is so high because it is one of the most free country in the world and people do whatever they want. God is so far away from their lives. America also has more money to spend. But every country is like Sodom. South America is bad because they are many poor countries. And people will do anything to survive.
---Mark_V. on 1/21/14

This is the verse in the RSV...

"and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which is ALLEGORICALLY called Sodom and Egypt"...

....the word "spiritually" has meaning similar to PHILISOPHICAL thought (this verse refers to a 'Las Vegas lifestyle' as being a lifestyle that is detrimental to holy living).
---faithforfaith on 1/18/14

Family,Ceratainly,agree BroMark shocking!
It' is horrible in Cuba, pimps openly beat women, nobody does nothing, openly( the pimps do other "sinfull stuff") openly get- a slap -on the wrist type of " citation :pander open prostitution!"

It' clear the report " not much change since "the europeans" they record brought this to Cuba 1950' .era. Sin rampant! Worldwide.

viewed Cuban christian pentecostal,baptist,other churches.

I wrote notes 'so glad they worship & love, live for Jesus'
my texts erased /no comments permitted.

Satan does not want the people live for Jesus Christ.

You know it's REAL when you see something like this!

Carolyn, I believe that almost every country is like Sodom spiritually. Not just America. In China, they kill mostly girls, and have a limit on how many children you can have. Africa is one of the worst countries, muslems are going around killing just about every Christian they can find. Russia, is no different either. The whole world as far as all countries are in terrible sin. Some more then others. In poverty countries like South America there is lots of sin. The more people we have the more sin there is.
---Mark_V. on 9/27/13

Could spiritually mean a state of being rather than a
certain place? My bible says
the cities Sodom and Egypt. It
seems America has spiritually
become Sodom and boastfully
so.
---Carolyn on 9/26/13

Sis. Catherine, I really liked your answers. I have been following your answers and you have done great. Thank you so much. What you say is very true that the place where Jesus died was spiritually called Sodom. Thou He was crucified right outside of Jerusalem at a place called 'Golgotha' or ' The place of the skulls" or "Calvary" I like Calvary the best. A place located right outside the city of Jerusalem. Thank you sister, and glad to see you online, peace I leave you.
---Mark_V. on 9/23/13

NO, it's not Jerusalem. Here Jerusalem is characterized as Sodom, which is very interesting to me, because of it's wickedness, and as Egypt, because of it's oppression and enslavement of the people of God....Both names appears repeatedly in Scripture as the objects of God's unrelenting wrath. Now, on to the two witnesses. They are redeemed men on earth.

So you think that Jesus was crucified in Rome?

shira, the Bible has come in many forms over the ages: at first handwritten scrolls, codices, and lectionaries, then in printed books, and now in various electronic media.

They all have usefulness in different applications. A friend of mine had his favorite translation of the Bible on his e-reader during his hospital stay.

And lets not forget audio forms, such as cassette tapes and DVDs.

Glory to Jesus Christ--in this case for all of them.
---Cluny on 9/17/13

steveng, I have my bible on my laptop and ipad. one of my friends took his ipad to church instead of his bible. the preacher kept watching him. guess he thought he was playing games. I laughed at that one. I just want my bible in my hands. I need one that I can look up subjects. do you have any ideas?
---shira4368 on 9/16/13

\\A good searchable KJV bible is on the website Biblegateway.\\

They also have other English translations and other languages.

\\I said the "written" Word brings one to Christ INITIALLY. \\

The 3000 converted at Pentecost and Cornelius the centurion were NOT converted by the written word, but by the proclamation (that is, spoken word) of St. Peter.

St. Paul said that God saved by the "foolishness of preaching" (to be carefully distinguished from preaching foolishness), and not by "the foolishness of reading the Bible."

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 9/16/13

Steven, you contradict yourself. You say first,
"Mark V, how many times do I need to tell you that I do not sent people to the internet." Here you swear you do not send anyone to the internet. Then you say,
" Most people do not have a searchable bible on their computers so I send them to a searchable KJV bible on the internet"
You do sent others to the internet just like I said so why deny it? And why do you sent them? To look up words. You say they might not have a searchable KJV bible, what is a searchable KJV bible? One that is different then another? A special Bible written by someone with Greek and Hebrew? because otherwise you will not know what the words mean.
---Mark_V. on 9/17/13

Mark V, how many times do I need to tell you that I do not sent people to the internet. Most people do not have a searchable bible on their computers so I send them to a searchable KJV bible on the internet so that they may search the KJV bible for certain words relating to the topic we are discussing. A good searchable KJV bible is on the website Biblegateway.

As for the translation, re-read my post again, slowly. I said the "written" Word brings one to Christ INITIALLY. Then the Holy Spirit takes it from there...

Steven, so what you are saying is that the Spirit translates the word in Hebrew and Greek words to english so that you can understand them, is that what you claim? You cannot be serious?
You are going bananas. I believe you are. If you believe that, why do you send others to the computer so they can look up words? Are you trying to mislead others?
Yes, the Bible is sufficient to save anyone. But if you are from China and don't know how to read an english bible, the word is no good to you. Some person has to translate it to him. The Holy Spirit is not going to go around translating all the passages to everyone in different languages.
---Mark_V. on 9/16/13

Mark_V.: "Steven, you must have been born knowing Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. I wasn't. I need someone to teach me."

Why need to learn man's language? God's learning transcends man's language. The Holy Spirit does not teach man in man's language. One cannot learn spiritual matters using the knowledge of man. All your posts on these blogs prove that you have the worldly knowledge of God and His Word but deny His true power. It is the written Word brings one to Christ initially, but it is the Holy Spirit that teaches spritual matters in His language. God takes over when man's knowledge has served it's purpose. It is the Holy Spirit that ministers to the christian, grows the christian, matures the christian.
---Steveng on 9/15/13

Steven 2: Maybe the Holy Spirit translates the Hebrew and Greek to you He doesn't to me. What He did was give me the ability to read and some resources so that I look up words. I am alway learning. What you really need is to get some books in Greek and Hebrew, and also concordances, and most of all don't look for evil in every corner, look for the Truth. Not everything is evil.
---Mark_V. on 9/15/13

Steven, you must have been born knowing Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic. I wasn't. I need someone to teach me. God inspired godly man to help us learn the languages and words that are used in the Bible. Everything you see or hear is of Satan or money. All godly man do not have the money to give everything out for free. The least you can do, if you have a passion to know the truth, is to pay a couple of dollars, since everything already belongs to the Lord anyway. You don't want to know period. Everything you see is of Satan anyway.
The Bible is sufficient to bring salvation, but if you really want the meat of the gospel, you have to know what the words mean in Hebrew and Greek. And you can only know that is if you study with word study materials.

Mark_V.: "You send people to the computer to look up words and what they mean, you say words from the Bible. But the words don't always mean the same thing in every passage. You have to read the context to know what the meaning is. So I say, read the Bible, read the context and then you will know the meaning of the word correctly. You imply the word means the same thing anywhere you find it, but it does not."

Bad case of Alzheimers, Mark? I've been telling you that for several years now. Why do you think it's something new? Use the bible as its own reference. Don't depend on the plethora of concordances, reference bibles, other authors opinions to sell books, etc.
---Steveng on 9/13/13

Steven, I said to you,
"Read the Bible do not depend on the computer, depend on God the Spirit." you asked

"Why ahve you said such a comment?" here is why. You send people to the computer to look up words and what they mean, you say words from the Bible. But the words don't always mean the same thing in every passage. You have to read the context to know what the meaning is. So I say, read the Bible, read the context and then you will know the meaning of the word correctly. You imply the word means the same thing anywhere you find it, but it does not.

If you are saved truly chosen by the living God and someone is holding a gun or a knife to your head like over in Syria, ordering you to convert or die, you are already CHOSEN, [as long as it is not coming from your heart], God will still take you to HEAVEN!
---catherine on 9/12/13

Steven, You say,
"When faced with death, most of you will compromise your faith to stay alive. That's human nature." How can you possibly know that? You also say, it is human nature. We are not saved and sustained by our human nature, we are sustain by the Lord who is Spirit. You don't believe that,
"..so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of "our Lord Jesus Christ, who will sustain you to the end," guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord" (1 Cor. 1:7-9). Yet you do not believe or trust God, you trust man more then God.

Mark_V.: "...of you are supposely Christians, and yet you don't trust God to take care of His children."

Mark V, hundreds of thousands of christians are dying every day because of persecutions - mostly in the arab countries and asian right at the moment. When faced with death, most of you will compromise your faith to stay alive. That's human nature. For those of you who believe in the pre-trib rapture is trying to escape tribulation. What vain thinking. When the bible says to endure until the end doesn not mean the end of the age, but the end of your life. Mark 4:17

1 Kings 15:3_5 "And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father. Nevertheless for David's sake did the LORD his God give him a lamp in Jerusalem, to set up his son after him, and to establish Jerusalem: Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite."

"They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
---Nana on 9/11/13

King David never lost his salvation. Why don't you people believe in God? Trust in God? Depend on God? most of you are supposely Christians, and yet you don't trust God to take care of His children. What kind of faith is that in God? That is no faith at all. David fell into hard sin, God restored him from that sin by convicting him. God chastens His children who disobey Him. David is no different then all others, he sinned just like every single person sins. Sin is sin. Maybe he was worse then some of us, yet it is still sin. Sin brings consequences and David had many of them because of his sin.

Steven, you have given no proof that those who were saved by grace through faith backslided or where lost. The fact is that everyone, with the exception of a few, the remnent of God, were under the law, no one is save under the law because no one could keep all of the laws. They had the oracles of God, but were never obedient to God. The first thing they always did was create idol worship. God made many covenants with them, and if they obeyed, they would receive blessings, but they never obeyed so they received curses. Read the Bible do not depend on the computer, depend on God the Spirit.
---Mark_V. on 9/10/13

Mark_V., I have given you plenty of verses to read, but you still not believe. Godly people in the old testament have backslid, people in the new testament backslid, christians today' backslide. Christians are like all the other people throughout history because, well, they are people. They will never change until the second coming.

As for the Grace of God, it's a gift given out freely but many christians forget the gift and toss it aside for the cares of this world just like the godly people in the old testament and the Israelites as a whole. Don't be so vain to think today's christians are any better than the godly people in the past. And by reading all your posts, you will be a victim of backsliding.

Jesus did say it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah, in the day of judgment, than it will be for a city that refused the disciples (Mark 6:11). So, I can see that Jesus could be calling Jerusalem "Sodom and Gomorrah", in order to bring out how judgment for rogue Jews in Jerusalem will be worse than it will be for Sodom and Gomorrah, and to show they are not so great and superior like they think. They are so conceited, that they think they are too good for Jesus!!
---willie_c: on 9/9/13

Isaiah 1:2 "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me."
Whose children rebelled and were lost?

He came for the lost childeren:

"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
Those were pretty wrong and pretty lost for whom he asked forgiveness.
"And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise."
Wow, ask forgiveness for that motley crew! No wonder Paul said, "For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe."
---Nana on 9/9/13

Steven, again you are preaching the wrong gospel. No child of God is lost. We are never told that those born of the Spirit go back to being dead in trespasses and sins. Not one passage. You just don't believe Jesus and what He said. He said none will perish.
The only way you can believe a believer loses his salvation is when you believe the person was saved by his own free will, his own works. But we are saved by the Grace of God through faith. All who fall back were never saved to begin with. "They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us, but they went out that they might be made manifest that none of them were of us"
---Mark_V. on 9/9/13

Nobody has been "saved" yet. This is a future event.

Don't be so vain to think that christians cannot return to their old sinful ways. Being a Christian means continually living like God wants you to live. Many have "backslidden" into their former sinful ways of living. The bible warns us about backsliding. If a christian is "once saved, always saved" why would the bible have warnings?

Proverbs 14:14
Jeremiah 3:12-14
Jeremiah 14:7
Ps 51:1-12
Matthew 24:37
I Timothy 1:18-19
Hebrews 3:12-13
Mark 4:14-19
1 Corinthians 10:12

Daily worship is the best prevention against backsliding.
Ephesians 4:22-24

To leave a body unburied was one of the greatest forms of contempt & insult's to the Jew of that time. As concerning the place, it's not certain to what city the writer of Revelation is referring to, based on a number of commentaries use to search this verse. It could be Egypt, Jerusalem or Rome, but that is not as important as the reason for leaving the bodies unburied and that was rejecting what these witnesses were saying and showing their contempt by leaving their bodies in the street.

"Initially Luther had a low view of the Old Testament book of Esther and of the New Testament books of Hebrews, James, Jude, and the Revelation of John. He called the Letter of James "an epistle of straw," finding little in it that pointed to Christ and His saving work. He also had harsh words for the Revelation of John, saying that he could "in no way detect that the Holy Spirit produced it.""

blogger, please tell me where you got such news. I will just say that God is deity and when He put His Word together, He didn't put anything misleading or something not true. the bible is just like God intended and John did write revelation...every word is inspired by God. God don't make mistakes

Although the place where Jesus was crucified is outside the gates of Jerusalem it's still close enough that the centurion and others could witness the veil on the temple being rent. Matt 27:51-54, Mark 15:38-39. The two witnesses will be killed in the same place as their Lord.

"Spritiually" called Sodom and Egypt means that the Kingdom that God led out of Egypt has become as Sodom. Sodom committed adultery with other gods and became so evil that their sins reached the point of no return. Israel rejected their Messiah and the Kingdom was taken away from them and will be given to another who will bear the fruit of it. Matt 21:42-43. Their house is left desolate. Matt 23:38.
