I've been chastised many times by so-called christians for not keeping up-to-date by reading christian books and using christian reference books. What's wrong with reading the bible only without concordances, christian dictionaries, and the thousands of books by hundreds of authors?

Dear Rod4Him

Since we never use her Writings to prove anything and in fact we generally cannot. Because except for a couple of points such as encouraging the Belief in the Trinity the majority of her writings are pastoral. She encourages people to keep on, to eat right, to read and follow the Bible, and telling people to be loving to others. We do not use her to prove we are correct to anyone.

Dear Shira you know that if I only listen to the RCC Martin Luther is a terrible man. So yes you can only listen to one side if you wish.

But what would you think about a person who only listened to an enemy of yours about what you are like?

//Could you please give me the exact place of this quote.//

I am curious. Would it make a difference?

//There was never a time when God instructed His people more earnestly than He instructs them now concerning His will and the course that He would have them pursue//

Interesting quote. That's exactly what many Apostolic type churches say today, "God has given "them" visions and dreams to prove it."
---Rod4Him on 3/6/14

Cluny I have seen many people switch to ad hominem.

I have read in EGW's on writings where she said that God instructs more earnestly in her own writings than in the pages of the Bible, and to ignore them is to insult the Holy Spirit. Cluny

I looked up the quote and tried to find it. There were a number close but some words are changed. In particular (pages of the Bible).

The phrase to insult the Holy Spirit I found in a quote about her not from her own words.

Could you please give me the exact place of this quote.

There was never a time when God instructed His people more earnestly than He instructs them now concerning His will and the course that He would have them pursue. CCh 91.2

Steveng: There is nothing bad with sticking with the Holy Bible, in fact you can never feel so sufficient of reading it. When you concentrate on one part you faintly remember the other parts. But Ps.19:7 teaches us,"the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple". It is because of the Lord's testimony that we sometimes need to read what others true children of God have written.

Dear Shira

I was not comparing the Bible with the Books by Ellen G. White. The Bible is far above her words.

But I dislike you calling her a Heretic which is your right. Considering you have never read any book she ever wrote. That is very Judgmental.

Many of her critics disagreed with her Theology but spoke of her as a good Christian women.

What would you think of me if I judged you? Without ever meeting you or reading what you wrote.

Samuel, please don't compare the bible with books written by a heretic.
---shira4368 on 3/3/14

I have read over 40 books written by Ellen G. White. She actually wrote many more. Just like many do with the Bible I see many take her words out of context and change them.

So while you Cluny have read a few phrases and have already made up your mind. That is your right.

But you went in deciding she was of the devil. Then accepted your forgone decision.

I originally went in with doubt. But began to accept her as she kept pointing me to JESUS in all her writings.

If you want try reading one of her Shortest books Steps to Christ. Then tell me how that get people to follow the devil.

Cluny: We all know that you are a deceiver, a user of false names to hide your true identity. You routinely misquote EGW with excerpts from your favorite "hate SDA's" website. You believe that all religions are evil except your hate-filled, apostate, pseudo-orthodox cult. We SDA's, on the other hand, believe that God has His faithful children in all Christian denominations, maybe even some in yours.

"But I do not ask you to take my words. Lay Sister White to one side. Do not quote my words again as long as you live until you can obey the Bible. ... when you make its principles the elements of your character, you will know better how to receive counsel from God." EGW, MR, p. 200

---jerry6593 on 3/2/14

I have read in EGW's on writings where she said that God instructs more earnestly in her own writings than in the pages of the Bible, and to ignore them is to insult the Holy Spirit.

She also said that her writings bear either the stamp of God or the stamp of the Devil. To a discerning Christian, it's obviously the latter.

Samuelbb7:

You asked: Do you believe that prophecies can be conditional?

They can be, but if so, such conditions are typically mentioned in the prophecies themselves. For example:

If my people, who are called by my name, humble themselves and pray, I will hear from heaven...

If one is permitted to arbitrarily insert unwritten/unspoken conditions into a prophecy, it becomes unfalsifiable - which also makes it unverifiable - just like horoscopes. One of the key tests of a prophet was to see if what he said came true - which you can't do if you can just add conditions after the fact when the prophecy doesn't take place.

Not a true prophecy from God is conditional. There was no IF in what she is reported as saying.

If you read more of the site. It points out that this was conditional on the Church fulfilling the Gospel and that JESUS came soon.

Since the work was not finished and He did not come as soon as they hoped it was not fulfilled.

Then why are the false prophecies of EGW so prominent in the teaching of the SDA? Cluny

I have heard this charge many times and my problem is the same as when people used to tell me the bible is full of errors.

I need to know what exactly are the False prophecies you are speaking of.

In the 40 years I have been an SDA I have seen many say this. But few actually can point to what and where. Those I have investigated and every charge has been shown false.

Our doctrine is not based on EGW. It is based on the Bible. We must prove what we believe from the Bible alone or we are not following what the Bible or EGW says. Since she charged the church to read and study the Bible as the only source of all truth.

//And it's used in the context of talking about the Eucharist...//

The "Eucharist" in this context was a meal. That's not the "tradition" today.

Wrong.

In I Cor 11:2, while the KJV uses the word "ordinances," the Greek word is PAREDOKA, which elsewhere is translated "tradition."

And it's used in the context of talking about the Eucharist, which is an issue of what you call "church format."

True. But a tradition made over 300 years or more latter is not to be accepted if it contradicts what Paul was teaching. For we know whatever tradition he taught was in line with what he wrote.

Isa 8:20

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

So when a tradition contradicts scripture why should we believe it above the Word of GOD.

Textual reproduction of Jewish scrolls was a very manacles process there line counts, word counts and character counts as well as just trading the text for accuracy any error found the page had to be destroyed and rewritten.

In early New Testament reproduction there was no quality control what so ever. A group of slaves were taught to read and write Greek one slave read the others slaves transcribes what they thought he said and this causes all kinds of problems. The source text was all capitals letters and words were not separated they are all consented together. Some source text contained errors as there was as there was no quality control regarding source text selection.

When Paul refers to scripture it's the Old Testament.
---Blogger9211 on 2/26/14

In the AV it says that the women bought a 100 pounds of spices to anoint Christ body while more modern translations will say about 75 pounds which is correct?

They both are correct. A Roman pound was not 16 oz it was 11.6 oz and hundred 11.6 oz pounds weigh about seventy five 16 ox measures.

A Concordance tells you in what chapter verses a single term is used

A Lexicon tells you what a term means.

A reverse Concordance tells you all of the possible renderings in the target language a single Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek terms may be.

Transliteration is simply moving a term from Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek to a target language un-translated but makes it readable in the target language.

//I agree, "proper biblical context" is a must!//

Besides reading/studying in context, it is helpful to know the historical setting and context. For example, why was the man (or men) with the demons living in the tombs? Probably because at that time people would bring food to their deceased loved ones, similar to the way people take flowers out today. He would have had shelter and food to eat.

That doesn't change doctrine, but it does present an explanation and fuller picture of what was happening. Outside the Bible historical resources are very helpful to get a better visualization of how things were in ancient times.

Extra-biblical sources may or may not be useful in understanding biblical principles. Some sources teach truth while others teach error. So how are we to tell the difference? Two scriptures come to mind:

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Act 17:11 These [Bereans] were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

ALL sources are to be tested by the Bible - not the other way around.

The problem with the Eisegesis & Exegesis is that if a person disagrees with you they will say that you are using Eisegeis. My challenge is that if you say I am using Eisegeis then I want you to prove your point by Exegesis.

Just saying I am wrong proves nothing. By the same proof however I have to use texts and points from the Bible to show my point.

For instance Cluny has told me many times the Bible does not say it is the Final Authority. Yet when I point out that to answer the Devil JESUS used It is Written or the Bible to prove the devil wrong. I can also point to Paul who said the Bible is our authority to Timothy.

Isa 8:20

Yet Cluny does not answer with any proof that shows my points are incorrect.
---Samuelbb7 on 2/20/14

Steveng: Eisegesis & Exegesis. I remember them, i.e., "Ei" means "I". "Ex" points to the "cross" of Jesus.

- Eisegesis is Bible interpreting using one's own ideas (opinions) ~ repeatedly trying to square peg a round holes.
- Exegesis, BY THE LEADING OF GOD, THE HOLY SPIRIT, is an expository investigation & study of Bible text & history, i.e., text origins, historical study of cultural backgrounds of book authors, & the original audience. The Holy Spirit's teaching is always Christ-centered, Gen.-Rev.

Bible "supplemental" books,i.e., concordances & expository dictionaries, are "ex"cellent! Egocentric books are hazardous materials.

Wow. Many good points and great comments.

While reading each book of the Bible it is good to know when it was written. For instance the first three Gospels were written soon after the resurrection. But John was written with the Church growing and facing problems.

Lastly to see how a word is used in different places such as soul it is great to have a concordance that gives the places and the different ways the word is translated.

Lastly a Concordance can help with a topical study of a doctrine. By going over key words such as baptism and seeing it use in different places.

A Bible dictionary or history can be helpful to clarify fuzzy ideas we get from reading only the Biblical text.

Example that does not turn on a doctrinal matter: Revelation refers to books--but they were not books as we think of them today (codices) but rather scrolls.

Another: Despite artistic depictions of the Last Supper, Jesus and the Apostles were not sitting on chairs, but rather reclining on couches and pillows, as this was the custom at the time.

Those that chastise you for not reading godly books but not scripture is wrong.
However, there is Acts 2 "they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching..." In this context the apostles take on the role of pastors of the fellowship. You would not think of stop listening to your local pastor. My point is this, Why not listen to another pastors views and insight that is what they love to do and are paid for. "It is the spirit that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63

"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come." John 16:13

They are then just head knowledge without faith to you.

Nowhere does the Bible say it's a stand-alone document.

The very fact you post here shows you read other things besides Bible, Steveng.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

Steveng, Reading a book as complex as the bible ,one does need reference books.
Why? Just get a Lexicon and see the many scholars that do not agree on a multitude of scripture, and these are people well versed in Hebrew and Greek! Some translators are naturally biased!
Example, J.H.Thayer one of the world's best translators who wrote a Greek-English Lexicon...Biased publisher wrote pp VII "a WORD OF CAUTION is necessary .Thayer was Unitarian and the errors of this sect occasionally come through...The reader should be alert...subtle and blatant denial of the trinity etc...etc.!
