Explain Romans 1:20

Please read Romans 1:20.

Some say that this teaches us that those who have NEVER heard of Jesus, YET can see ONE God in His Creation, might not be as lost as we think they are. Their reason for not believing in Jesus being simply because they have not been taught about Him. Opinions please.

Rita,
Romans 1:20 teaches us that no one has an excuse, everyone is guilty. Whether they heard of Jesus or not, "because what may be known about God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkended.
---Luke on 8/18/14

Eze 16:49-50 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, surfeit of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. They were haughty, and did abominable things before me, therefore I removed them, when I saw it.
/God destroyed Sodam/Gommorah ONLY because "they did not aid the poor and needy" Ezekiel 16:49 RSV.\-faithforfaith on 7/15/14
-This is a false statement as seen from Ezekiel. Pride, haughtiness and abominable things also were part of the judgment.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Why do you say that? Did I not say "Dear Luke" and "Agape"?

Dear Kathr,
You are correct, every single born of the Spirit believer has great joy in his heart. That joy comes from Christ who lives in him. Many have died for the Lord, who had great joy in Christ.
Agape

Dear Rita,
Rom. 1:20 is addressed at those without Christ who have no excuse because,
"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen,.."
---Luke on 7/19/14

Jesus came for the sick/corrupt. The person who Jesus told that their lifestyle had already saved them was living a civilised and caring lifestyle (*"Woman, your faith has saved you").

What the Romans really did wrong is that...

..although they had the scriptures and knew about God, God didn't accept any of their worshippings and honors (those were not "ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP").....BECAUSE THEY WERE 'BOOK'/text empirical procedures/activities...

....(they were not 'MOVEMENTS OF THE HEART').

Rom 1:21
for although they knew God they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him

God destroyed Sodam/Gommorah ONLY because "they did not aid the poor and needy" Ezekiel 16:49 RSV.

Rita, giving our opinions will only confuse the question since many have different opinions from what the Bible teaches. One thing we are certain, there is only one way into heaven and that is through Christ Jesus. There is no other way into heaven. He is the way.

1 Peter 4:14
If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye, for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

The joy of The Lord IS my strength.

Christains should be the happiest most joyful people on the earth. Why because OUR happiness and Joy has nothing whatsoever to do with the worldly definition of either. We are also the RICHEST of all...because we have the Riches that are in Christ Jesus...all right now, right here In these earthen vessels.
---kathr4453 on 3/9/14

2 Corinthians 4:7

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

HOW did all this get there? The answer is 2 Corinthians 4:6.
Just to clarify my last post.
---kathr4453 on 3/9/14

micha, very good passages you gave. I should have been more clear. Every believer should have joy in the Lord, and all heavenly things waiting for us.
But every believer should not love the world. The world brings nothing but bad things to all people. Death is all around us. If God was not the restrainer of sin, no one would be alive today. The world brings a lot of unhappiness. Believers suffer in this world. Their joy is in the Lord and in heaven that waits for us. We, as believers, are never promised a happy life on earth.
---Luke on 3/7/14

John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

There is joy and happiness.

Luke 2:10 "And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people."
John 15:11 "These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full."

Mas la loca, como siempre...
---Nana on 3/6/14

"Believers are never promise joy and a happy life in this world..."-Luke on 3/6/14
I concur that we are not promised a "happy" life, but we are promised joy while in this world.
Psa 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence [is] fulness of joy, at thy right hand [there are] pleasures for evermore.
Psa 35:9 And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in his salvation.
John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and [that] your joy might be full.
John 16:22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Rom 2:14-16

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another,)

Yes, we are commanded to spread the gospel because no one knows which sinners are going to be saved. Only God knows who they are, and when they will be saved. And when He is going to save someone, He not only prepares the one going to be saved, but also makes sure someone is going to be there with the gospel.
Believers are never promise joy and a happy life in this world, they are promised an eternal life with Christ. So many have died for the cause all through history. Jesus said, if they hate you it was because they hated Him first. We are going to be hated by so many. Everywhere, and it's happening today.
---Luke on 3/6/14

//"I find it difficult to believe that such people will go to hell for not believing in someone who nobody has ever told them existed//

I find it hard to believe that Jesus would lay down His life for people, who had not even been born, yet the Word says it. We simply by faith believe it.
---michael_e on 3/4/14

Amen micha.

We are commanded to spread the gospel. Why? because all who do not know or believe in Jesus Christ are condemned already as Scripture tells us in John 3: 18,19. "He who believes in Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
It seems like a terrible thing that those who never even heard of Jesus be condemned already, but that is what the passage is teaching about all men (v.19) explains about the light that comes into the world and men loved darkness rather than light.
---Luke on 3/4/14

Amen Luke

Dear Rita

First we are commanded to spread the Gospel. Second it must be done before JESUS can come. Knowing JESUS helps improve their lives makes them happier and then some who are lost now can come to JESUS because of the love we show to them.

[Rom 2:13,14

(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.]

It is a beautiful passage with lots of truth. The only problem with it is, that no one can keep the whole law. If they could, they would be justified as the passage states.
The passage teaches that our righteous deeds cannot save us because no one can keep the whole law. It also teaches us that only the righteousness of Christ could keep the law for us who are in faith. So His righteousness is imputed to us who believe by faith.

Why even reach them then?
I mean, if they are in communion with God the way they are, there is no need to give them Jesus, to give them a possibility of denying Him, is there?
But, if they are separated from the One True God by their actions, then we should make every effort to reach them with the gospel because of their fate without Christ.

Most (previously unknown) people on the planet, once discovered, have been found to be 'worshipping' something. They see this 'something' (maybe the sun) as God because they believe that is what created all things.

They believe this and worship 'their 'god' because they have known nothing else - NOBODY HAS PREVIOUSLY VISITED THEM TO BE ABLE TO TELL THEM ANYTHING ELSE.

I find it difficult to believe that such people will go to hell for not believing in someone who nobody has ever told them existed.

They DO see God in creation but not in quite the same way that we (who now know about Jesus) do.

Once reached by missionaries they can be educated in Christian truths just like a small child here can be taught.
---Rita_H on 2/28/14

What the passage teaches is the wrath of God against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. Since they knew about God because God had manifested Himself to them. It speaks nothing of whether someone believes or not in Jesus Christ. The wrath of God is on these people because although they knew God because He manifested Himself to them, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful. They are without excuse. They can never say they did not honor God because they never knew about Jesus. They have no excuse.
---Luke on 2/26/14

actually I really don't understand all this. I've wondered how people who have never heard the name Jesus can die and go to hell. Romans 1:20 says anyone should know there is God just by the heavens and earth and the 24 hour day. how the heavens, earth, sun and moon should know it isn't possible for all this just to happen.

IN THE RSV (it is more explanatory),...1 John 2:27
but the anointing which you received from him ABIDES IN YOU, and YOU HAVE NO NEED that any one should teach you, as his ANOINTING TEACHES YOU about everything, and IS TRUE, and is NO LIE, just as IT HAS TAUGHT YOU.

John 14:6 "I am the way.

Acts 9: so that if he found any belonging to the Way,....

Act 19:9 but when some were stubborn and disbelieved, speaking evil of the Way.

Act 19:23 About that time there arose no little stir concerning the Way.

Act 24:14 But this I admit to you, that according to the Way.

UNDERSTANDING is on a NEED TO KNOW basis (if you have no need to understand, you won't understand).
---faithforfaith on 2/22/14

BY FAR, the way that MOST people on earth "LEARN" anything is by BEING TAUGHT...they need to be TAUGHT,...but some people learn without being taught (because they use their God-given brain).

1 John 2:27 speaks of having knowledge of God as COMMON SENSE (we have God's 'DNA' (HIS 'seed' if you will). When we are not distracted by all of man's 'yada, yada nonsense', then we will discover the COMMON SENSE KNOWLEDGE/TRUTH and that is called THE ANOINTING. It is also explained in that verse that WE HAVE NO NEED of a spiritual teacher because the ANOINTING will explain to us ALL TRUTH,

The trouble is that we've come to believe that learning can only be accomplished by BEING "TAUGHT".
---faithforfaith on 2/22/14

From what I have read about this passage is that the people were knowingly doing what was wrong. The gentiles were ignoring their own conscience. By doing so they were securing their own fate. It was designed to show that all men and women need the salvation of God.

Nana, my question was posed because I cannot see the connection between the question and some of the comments written. Maybe I am missing the point and would like to understand.

There you go, self serving again. Are you satisfied now?

I found it offensive your 'broadcast', "Maybe someone can enlighten me as to what the below comments have to do with the question..."

Rom 2:14,15

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another,

These to me mean that we cannot contain GOD. But He will judge the hearts of all people. Not just their knowledge.

I see that those who know have more responsibility and will be judged harsher if they do not live up to what they know. For that shows the true condition of their heart.

Agape to all.

Romans 9:4 "Who are Israelites, to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises"
However,
Matthew 21:43 "Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof."
All in all,
Matthew 22:14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

Paul tells us,

Ephesians 4:30 "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." (Hebrews 3:17)

Matthew 7:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you."
---Nana on 2/18/14

If you would look up Hebrews 9:14 in the RSV, it clearly says that purification of conscience is done by the eternal Holy Spirit brought by Jesus. In the O.T., the words "holy Spirit" referred to God's divine Spirit (God's 'character'/way(s) of perfection), but the "h" was not capitalized because it the Jews were NOT TOLD/commanded to include the divine Spirit in worship, READ HEBREWS 9:14.

I am not here to lie to you.

The body of Christ needs help today.

God says that in the last days, the sons and daughters of the present generation shall prophesy of the "depths of God" (Acts 2:17 and Joel 2:48). There is much TRUTH to discover in order to survive the SHAKING Hebrews 12:25-30).

"Can we expect them to know any more than that when they have never been taught more than that?"
---Rita_H on 2/16/14

The Golden rule is one of the most basic truths which all men understand. Even a toddler learns that if he poke the electric outlet with a metal bobby pin, it will poke back! Chances are, that's a lesson for life too.

Luke 12:48 "But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

There will still be people in remote parts of the world who have never met a missionary, never heard the word 'God' or 'Creator' in any language and certainly not have heard about Jesus and the sacrifice He made for mankind.

It has been found in the past that many 'lost tribes' (once discovered) were found to have beliefs 'of a kind'. It would seem that it is inbuilt in man to accept that all around them (nature) was created by 'someone far greater than they are' and did not just happen by itself.

Can we expect them to know any more than that when they have never been taught more than that?
---Rita_H on 2/16/14

Rita, as I see it this verse is saying this creation is the greatest evidence for the Creator (Jesus), even going to the extent of saying those who will not believe in Him "are without excuse." Having no excuse for not believing they will be judged and found wanting. Therefore it is our job to assist unbelievers to see this is God's purposefully created world as opposed to the result of random chance, so they may turn and be saved.
---Warwick on 2/16/14

"Purification of the CONSCIENCE is performed by the eternal/divine Holy Spirit (which the Jews knew nothing about)."
I disagree and rather am inclined to believe that it is accomplished by loving God and neighbour with all our heart and all our strenght.

1 John 4:7 "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God."
1 John 4:12 "No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us."

The effecting-our love, the perfecting-God (in us).

WE "know God"...and therefore we are expected to honor Him [with ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP].

"Acceptable worship" is LOVING HIM PROPERLY (not with books, obedience to LAWS of commandments/protocol (such as MOSAIC LAW was), we are to "keep" the PRECEPTS of the 10commandment law (peace, truth, etc.). We are to be "good, and right, and true" children of light Ephesians 5:8 and 9).

We are to OBEY the PERFECT LAW "LAW OF LIBERTY". Since we have neglected to read scripture FOR OURSELVES, we are regarded by God as obeying the IMPERFECT LAW and are the LAWLESS ONES.

WE (RELIGIOUS/"spiritual" humanity666) are the "MAN OF LAWLESSNESS", the SON OF PERDITION.
---faithforfaith on 2/15/14

"It is the SPIRIT that gives life" (the RSV is more explanatory than most other versions because the translators do not try to explain what they have not been taught by God).

Almost always, bible translators in other versions of scripture try to explain IN THE VERSE ITSELF the reasoning that they were taught in bible academy, they only know what they learned from classrooms and books, they have no concept of FREE THOUGHT or THINKING FOR THEMSELVES.

Jesus said "If you have not the spirit, you are no part of me" (no matter how well you can read).
---faithforfaith on 2/15/14

All of us here have HEARD OF Jesus and have heard the GOSPEL (but were not taught COMPLETE GOSPEL salvation (Hebrews 7:25 KJV, NIV???) says that Jesus is "ABLE to save COMPLETELY" (purification for sins/flesh, AND purification of CONSCIENCE).

Purification of the CONSCIENCE is performed by the eternal/divine Holy Spirit (which the Jews knew nothing about).

The Jews only knew about the MESSIAHSHIP of Jesus...the BLOOD shed at the cross)....John 7:39 "the spirit had not yet been given"). When asked, the Jews said "No, we have not even heard that there was one".

The water that poured from Jesus along with His blood was our THIRD WITNESS (remember the Jews of Revelation only had two witnesses).
---faithforfaith on 2/15/14

"This is He who came by water and blood" (1 John 5:8).

God's Spirit does NOT AGREE with the blood/Messiahship only, God's spirit agrees with BOTH the blood AND the water (the water that poured from Jesus is the LIVING WATER that we need to have in OUR HEART ALREADY in order to learn from God's Spirit).

We are OFFERED a "heart of flesh" (heart of gold, a gentle and contrite heart) IF we let God's divine spirit take away the "heart of stone".

The "flesh" is not evil or disgusting, it is simply what prevents us from being DIVINE-HEARTED (nobody can truly be genuine spiritual/holy, we can only TRY the best we can IF WE TRULY LEARN from God's spirit).

I am posting these verses from the RSV because so many worshipers refuse to research anything other than bonafide/approved KJV information. It is time that the body of BELIEVERS that claim the Messiahship (BLOOD only) of Jesus open their lifestyle to THE divine SPIRIT....."we were not given a spirit of timidity...".

...be brave and explore to find what is really true.

John 17:12
"I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition".

2Thess. 2:3
"and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of perdition".

WE JESUS WORSHIPERS have THREE witnesses (1 John 5:8), not the TWO that the Jews of Revelation had. WE HAVE "Him who came by WATER and blood".
---faithforfaith on 2/14/14

A true aetheist simply does not trust the world's reasoning about a creator that subjugates (looks down on and burdens) His children/beloved.

The GOSPEL of salvation is true, but so many teachings other than salvation itself (law, etc.) are heretical and PERDITIOUS.

TWO THOUSAND years of perdition makes the modern "body" (all believers).....the SON OF perdition "and none is lost BUT THE SON OF PERDITION").

In Romans chap. 1, it is made obvious what the Romans really did wrong...

"though they KNEW GOD, they did not honor Him and give thanks".

We have learned lies (perditious teachings). Don't let your HEART/INNER MAN be the result of those teachings. Verses are RSV.

GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE (isn't that the Godly standard and the reason you love God?).

There are many people that try to dignify/justify their rejection of the divine creator by 'copping-out' as AETHEISTS, ...BUT, a TRUE aetheist avoids accepting God because "Christians" have mocked God/faith (a TRUE aetheist is a Eph. 5:8 "good and right and true" person).

Don't badmouth true aetheists, you might very well find them standing beside The Lord on judgement day.

We are NOT supposed to OBEY COMMANDS (Jesus tells us that the "PRECEPTS" of the law are what cause "circumcision", not "THE LAW" itself).
ALL verses are from the RSV.
---faithforfaith on 2/12/14

Atheist ridicule faith in anything but science. They believe this all happened by accident due to natural laws. So no that does not qualify as faith.

As for not needing to be commanded to be good. Atheist have no common standard of being good. They do not have a standard of right and wrong. Those who do good adopt the Christian standard of right and wrong generally.
---Sas_hmuelbb7 on 2/12/14

It would seem that a TRUE aetheist might be more "saved"/sanctified by "faith" than someone who relies on the "bible" in order to "have REST", but the next verse (Rom. 1:21) says that we should honor and give thanks to the creator...IF we "know" about who the creator is?????.

This might depend on a person's own philosophical understanding, but did Job, Noah, etc. have any "scripture" available to them.....or was their "faith" pure FAITH??.

When Paul spoke to the Athenians (was this "ATHEISM"?). The Athenians in Acts chap. 17 did not need to be COMMANDED/ordered to do good)....Titus 1:8 we should be a "lover of goodness, MASTER OF"...OURSELF.

There are two resurrections:

First, when Jesus returns the second time when the dead in Christ sha rise and the living in Christ shall be caught up with the dead.

Second, after one thousand years the rest of the dead shall rise and be judged from the Book of Life according to their works - some to everlasting death, some to everlasting life.

Blessed are those that rise in the first resurrection.

Then they told him that thousands of poor people, men, women, and children, slaked their thirst at this fountain, and he smiled and said, that he was little troubled by the critic's observation, only he hoped that on some sultry summer's day the critic himself might fill the cup, and be refreshed, and praise the name of the Lord."

I believe that ROMANS 1:20 is simply saying that, deep down inside, every single human being knows that GOD really does exist and that HE created every living thing. (As opposed to Evolution or the Big, Bad, Bang theory). And, that, at the end of the Day, Judgment Day, every soul will give account before this Creator and they will be without excuse for failing to believe in HIM and live for HIM while on Earth.
All of creation around us testifies of an extremely intelligent Being Who had to have been responsible for the existence of all that we see around us. The birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees, the animals and human beings, fire, air, water and land, etc., etc.

Rita,
Here are some companion verses:
Heb10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them,
*God is the one that writes the laws in the heart of his children.
Joh10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Christ's people hear HIS voice. They may never hear a preacher's voice, but they will hear the voice of their Saviour who is mighty to save.

Rom 2:14,15

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another,)

To me this verse means that GOD will judge each person individually and with respect to what they knew of the GOD. Their hearts will be judged by their love. Not by how much they know?

that's why no one in mankind will be excused come judgement day for not believing in God Almighty.---christanon 2/9/14

it is true...every man will bow. But 'they' in context of the verse is those who hold the truth in unrighteousness. That is not necessarily those who miss the mark.

Teaching and Believing
Romans 6:17 "But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you."
Romans 10:14_15 "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!"

>> How ugly the feet of those that preach discord and hate, who bring sad tidings to those in need, who neither go in themselves, neither suffer them that are entering to go in.<<

Romans 1:20 simply says what it says and that's "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse" and it must be completed with the following verse,

"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened."

And that's why no one in mankind will be excused come judgement day for not believing in God Almighty.

Fact is most of us have not been taught the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We were taught a from of the truth. Each religion of man has some truth in it. 2 Timothy 3:5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. The Gospel is the power of God given to man to destroy the works of the devil. That ball we have dropped, time to pick it up again and sow the Gospel it has the power in it to change the world.
