Christians With Depression

Anyone have any positive thoughts regarding depression and the Christian. I already take anti-depressants and a mood stabilizer and some progesterone and estrogen for being menopausal. This is very hard!

//I am a Christian woman that has fibromyalgia which causes depression.---Adela on 11/4/16

I understand your pain. I also have Fibromyalgia.

Working out can also combats depression.

I know the awful cycle of NOT having the energy and having too much pain to even START any exercise.

For that I as well cry out to God for help.
---Nicole_Lacey on 11/5/16

I am a Christian woman that has fibromyalgia which causes depression. No cure for that. I know if I never had this condition I would have not gotten to know, rely and lov God. I do take meds n hormones. When pain n depression hit I cry out to Him to be carried by Christ during my tim of pain is a beautiful feeling. When I get better I begin praising God, no one can understand what I go through except God. But most importantly you need to heal body with meds, heal your mind with the word and prayer, and soul with the infilling of the Holy Spirit, this is what God himself has taught me, I love Him so.
---Adela on 11/4/16

Well said.....many SS preachers being the easiest recognize. By lack of scriptural witness.
Even after they have consulted their learned superiors....who are usually worse.
Adam-antly superior in their disregard of any or all scriptural prophets/apostles multiples of written witness verses.

Hab 1:4 Therefore the law is slacked, judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous, therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.

Sounds like these days....

Thank you luke. Pleased to hear that you are better now. Regarding the use of plants as medicine - you would be amazed at how many people have told me that I have been serving Satan (and other similar phrases) by doing that.

Some people have absolutely no idea what goes into the 'over-the-counter' medication they are very happy to buy. Some of those are also plant based but many are a concoction of chemicals - many of which cure one thing but, at the same time, cause another problem.
---Rita_H on 3/23/14

//. Christians get headaches and become constipated just as other people do.//

Well said. When you said constipated, I was laughing because I was constipated at the time. It does not happen offend but it does.
I also liked that you said that God gives us the plants to help us. So very true, Agape
---Luke on 3/23/14

Such problems are often caused by a chemical imbalance. Being a Christian does not make us immune to such problems or any other kind of ill health. Christians get headaches and become constipated just as other people do.

Research the word Aromatherapy and, without discarding what you have from the doctor, consider using essential oils (for inhalation only initially). Roman Chamomile is good for anxiety, depression and stress. Periodically inhaling the vapour from just one drop on a paper handkerchief can be very effective. Clear it with your doctor though.

Don't allow anyone to tell you that it is Satanic (some will try). Satan never grew any health-giving plants. They are God's gift to us.
---Rita_H on 3/17/14

gee thanks luke. when I lost my job I had a difficult time bec. of the job market plus the added self confidence=sin the pastor told me. I had to go to an interview & they did not ask me about christianity or christ but what my skills are & the PERSON they will hire. thank you for your understanding bec people need to function in the real world. i guess before christians say something about sin they should listen first so they can address the problem not add more weight.
---mike on 3/17/14

//self is a SIN? christ said to peter 'it is I' so does that mean he is a sinner? self is a PERSON for relationship.//

First, Christ was identifying Himself when He said "it is I' He was not identifying His sinful nature since He was sinless. "Self" concerning all human beings is when a person thinks of himself before others, that is sin. Self as in all human beings is sin since we are all sinners before God.
What I believe you were trying to express is that you had a problem and when you ask the pastor, he told you self was a sin, he was not addressing the problem you had. I can now see there was more to the question you asked. I hope I am correct if not please forgive me. Agape
---Luke on 3/13/14

mike, I was just going over what you said to Lisa and what I believe now is a little different. When you spoke to your pastor and he said self was sin, he could only speak to you concerning what the Bible says. He is speaking from a biblical point of view, not from a doctor's point of view. He has no knowledge concerning mental illness. His credentials are only for being a pastor not a doctor. I don't believe any pastor can give you medical advice unless they are doctors themselves. You went to the wrong person for your problem. I hope I got that right now, if not please forgive me.
---Luke on 3/13/14

lisa

i understand what you are going thru bec. i did not know that I have bi polar but you can read BOUNDARIES by cloud & townsend. many of our depression is our out of control lives & christians would impose their 'religion' on us hoping to cure many 'sinful' suffering.
---mike on 3/12/14

Whenever a person becomes alienated from (withdrawn from, separated from) the environment that they are accustomed to...example...if you have always lived as a 'family man'....and then LOSE YOUR FAMILY, then you will LOSE THAT "identity" (become depressed).

"Depression" is an IDENTITY CRISIS (it is defined by professionals in many ways and excuses for your money), but understanding this explanation is THE cure you need (and is THE only true understanding).
---faithforfaith on 3/11/14

self is a SIN? christ said to peter 'it is I' so does that mean he is a sinner? self is a PERSON for relationship. how can you function in your work & relationship...do we just sit down & beg for money like the pastors do & be lazy? that is a sin. I don't see him denying him'self' how come if pastors are paid well it is NOT a sin but self confidence to get a job IS? christianity is nothing but BS imposing someone else's stupid ideas but they don't practice what they preach.
---mike on 3/11/14

\\Depression is real but personally I believe it has to do with our world and the pace everyone is going.\\

There are many causes of depression. The three main ones are:

1. Reactive. This happens at bereavement or other loss. Time usually heals this.

2. Medical. Some medical conditions, such as diabetes or hypoglycemia, can affect mood. When the underlying medical condition is cared for, the depression usually vanishes.

3. Clinical. This is strictly a chemical imbalance and can be corrected with the proper medicine/s.

2 and 3 will frequently interact. Uncontrolled diabetes can make clinical depression worse, and vice versa.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 3/11/14

mike, the pastor that told you that self was sin is correct. The pastor is not spiritually delusional. We are all sinners (self). When sin entered the world all became sinners.
But Christianity is not the reason many have metal problems, it is because when sin entered the world it corrupted every human being. The reason we all die a physical death. If it was not for sin, we would live forever.
We now have a way to live forever, through faith in Jesus Christ. But people will die of all sorts of reasons. Our physical bodies have not being redeemed yet.
That occurs on the Day of the Lord.
---Luke on 3/11/14

Mike why do you listen to others Instead of the bible? God put herbs on earth for a reason but even that has gone commercial. God gave them to us in Genesis. Depression is real but personally I believe it has to do with our world and the pace everyone is going. Other things figure in that too but the world is spinning out of control.

\\Jesus used doctors in his analogy to bring understanding. \\

When did Jesus stop using doctors?

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 3/3/14

Well, as I pointed out, Jesus Himself said that the sick NEED a physician.-Cluny

Cluny
True, he did say that. But he was using it as an analogy. Before Christ came men used doctors for their afflictions, and because of this, Jesus used doctors in his analogy to bring understanding.

They used doctors because they didn't have the healing power of God on Earth.
But when Jesus was on the Earth, those who had faith in Christ, came to Christ to be healed. And those who have faith in Christ today, come to Christ to be healed.

It's not as easy for us to come by such faith, as we don't get to actually see these miracles as they did back then.

Thank you for your correction on the word "verses".
---David on 3/2/14

David:

Even though Jesus frequently told people "your faith has made you whole", these same people actually needed to physically go to Jesus to be healed. Even the Roman centurion, with more faith than anyone else Jesus ever met, asked Jesus to "say but the word, and my servant will be healed" - he didn't declare his servant healed in Jesus's name himself.

The sad fact is, even with many Christians in the world, and many prayers for healing, not all such prayers are answered. (And no, "no" and "wait" don't count - Jesus never said that to anyone who came to him). since Jesus isn't walking the earth and healing people today, he leaves us to our own devices - and that includes doctors.
---StrongAxe on 3/1/14

Did Jesus ever send anyone away to a doctor? Did the Lords disciples?
If you are his disciple, why would you?
Where was this example of faith in a doctor, set for you in the Bible?

Read (Mark 5:25-29), and you will see the healing power of a doctor, verses the healing power of God. Which one healed the woman in the story, God or the doctor?

Your answers come not from God, but from your lack of Faith in God.
Think about it, before you answer.

Lidia
Thank you but no apology was necessary. I fully understand how someone can become angry when they disagree with me. And I do my best not to make it become an argument.

I don't come to this sight to argue, but to help those in need. People may disagree with what I say, but if they were to meet me in person they would soon see that I would treat them no different than one of my own family.

Brothers and sisters just disagree, Paul and Peter disagreed, but I'm sure one would have died to save the other.

When someone asks for your Christian opinion, and Christ is found nowhere in your answer, did you give them what they asked for?
Look back at the opinions on this blog given to Lisa, and tell me who gave her what she asked for.

Praising God in song, and doing the Good, the Lord commands us to do through Gods Holy Spirit, are two methods of receiving the Joy of the Lord in your heart.

As far as my comments on confession of sin, I was not condemning her, but telling her this was necessary for her to clearly hear the Lords commands.

Then why are you trying to stop people from going to a doctor?--Cluny

Cluny
That's a good question. It's from my own experience with depression. It was depression that caused me to turn to God.

I was a wealthy man, who could buy anything I wanted. One day the wealth that had kept me happy for so many years, ran out. I became so depressed, I lost my will to live. So one night I got on my knees and talked to God.

I confessed my sins and I asked him, in tears, to help me. Through the guidance of his Holy Spirit, I discovered a Joy in my life that I had not known before. And once learned, that Joy has never left me. The side effect of this training was a deep love for God. A love that I would gladly give my life for.

All the christians I know take aspirin or the like for headaches, use alcohol to disinfect cuts, live in homes to guard themselves against wicked men (Matthew 24:43) or bad weather.

---Nana on 2/23/14

Folks
Come on now, this is not a psychology today blog, it's a CHRISTIAN blog.

Lisa
The reason I gave you the advice I did, was not to condemn you for sin, but to tell you how to get back into the light of God.
Why? Depression comes from the lack of Joy in your life, and "Joy comes from the Lord".

Look at it this way, If your car was running out of gas, would you take it to a mechanic, or would you go to a gas station and fill your car up with Gas?
Giving aid to those the Lord puts on your heart, will fill your tank full of Joy.

God also bestows joy on those who sing his praises. Try singing a song like, "I am a friend of God", out loud, and then see how you feel.
---David on 2/23/14

Christians who are bi-polar or suffer from depression will not be helped by do-gooders, on sites such as this, telling them that their condition is bought about by sin.

Anyone truly believing THAT should also say that sin caused someone's appendics to erupt, or for their blinding migrain to have caused a road accident or for them having brought a less-than-perfect child into the world.

However, it is noticeable that such 'Christians' only see sin as being part of illness when that illness is 'mental' rather than 'physical'.

Such people need to thank God that depression and other mental disorders have not touched THEIR lives - YET!
---Rita_H on 2/23/14

Definitely, do NOT listen to David. If you are on antidepressants and mood stablizers, it means you have been diagnosed, by a psychiatrist with clinical depression. Having these meds, and the doctor to prescribe them for you, is something to give thanks to the Lord for.

One thing that helped me tremendously, in addition to proper medication, is psychotherapy, with a licensed psychologist. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been proven to help with clinical depression, in addition to the medication.

One of the assignments he once gave me was to make a daily gratitude list, at the end of each day. My lists started small, but at the end of a month, my lists were extensive.

Charles Spurgeon felt the pain of depression without calling depression sin. He said "Fits of depression come over most of us. The strong are not always vigorous, the wise not always ready, the brave not always courageous, the joyous not always happy." Even Christ was downcast. Life is not easy, even for the believer. If you can, get a copy of the book "Bright Days/Dark Nights" by Elizabeth Skoglund. We live in a fallen world and depression is painful and not out of the ordinary in this life. Some times we don't know why things happen the way they do, but we have to continue with our faith. Many Godly people have suffered with it, know God is always with you. Blessings

Lisa
Depression is a sign you have become separated from the light of God. I know of two ways a Christian can become separated.

One is being unwilling to forgive.
Is there a broken relationship in your life, due to your unwillingness to forgive? If so, go to them and mend that fence with forgiveness.

When was the last time you asked God to forgive your sins? Unconfessed sin is unforgiven sin, and unforgiven sin will also separate you from God.(Isaiah 59:2)

After the confession, listen and do what the Lord commands of you through his Holy Spirit, and your Joy will return. God loves his servants, and to be a servant, you must serve. The commands will be written on your heart, on your conscience.

Lisa....Yes, I do have some positive thoughts. Thank the Lord for doctors and medicine to help in your medical conditions. Please make sure you follow all of the doctor's directions and take your medicine.

Clinical depression is a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE, and not a character flaw. It's a medical, and not a moral or spiritual issue.

Obviously, being menopausal is a medical issue, too, but I don't know enough about these lady matters to have an opinion.

Take your meds with thanksgiving for God's provision for you, and in a spirit of obedience to His will for you at this time.

Remember there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
