Christian Activities In Church

What kind of meetings/activities take place in your church throughout the week?

Are any of those meetings held by organisations who hire your premises for a non-church activity e.g. I was a Brownie when a small girl and we met in a Sunday School room one evening per week.

Hello, the church, I used to go,rented free to A.A. the folks at A.A. were ok they made sure, lights out, all tables clean, etc.. and they did not steal! Like regulars & visitors( slippery fingers) who stole most all they could get not nailed down..they stole from me, enough,I gave up & quit going, there!

Our church allows others to use our church BUT they must be very moral and maintain the laws established by the church.
Based on what a lawyer told me, if a church has the conditions in the by-laws that certain criteria has to be met, they don't have to worry about lawsuits if a person or group doesn't meet the criteria. (This was in Puerto Rico, not sure if this holds true in the States.)

\\ I would not be surprised if they are allowed to use it free of charge because of the Christian origins of A.A. but that is just my guess.\\

My understanding is that AA and other 12 Step groups pay some kind of donation/token/whatever to pay for the utilities, but I could be mistaken.

Christ is risen!

If you rent your church buildings to outsiders you would be required to rent it to anyone or risk discrimination charges.

To those who refer to church rooms being rented out I'd just like to add that I have no idea whether any rent is paid for the A.A. meetings or not. I would not be surprised if they are allowed to use it free of charge because of the Christian origins of A.A. but that is just my guess.

Perhaps it's financial necessity but the only Synaqogue in town rents parking space to hospital visitors (because of it's proximity to the hospital) but on weekends rents space to the Unitarian fellowship for meetings!

churches need to be aware that Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple. people were making money in church and not for the church either. I honestly don't know about AAA or other organizations but I would think nothing wrong with people helping people.

We do not rent the church building to anyone. There are funerals, weddings, graduation parties, anniversary, birthdays, etc. for our church families. We do not allow the building to be used by anyone other than church family which includes other Christian churches in our area who do not have room for these kinds of events. We do not charge for the use.

Don't know the full details but we play pretty loud music and they were in the next room. Also it is probably in our contract that other companies have priorities over us, so we have to adapt to different situations.

Scott, I have a question. Why could you not do music the week an American idol was where ever? Was it a church? Don't understand about the music.
---shira4368 on 4/21/14

Rita, it does make for some good conversations, We will actually pull some people from those events into church, a good evangelistic tool. We had an American Idol broadcast one year. We could not do music that week.

Scott, sorry, just realised that you said you met in someone else's building, not that all these other functions were held in yours.

I hope that you will be able to meet in a building of your own one day. I used to attend a church which was held in a community centre. This was used each day by different people and meant that absolutely everything had to be cleared away before we left so that it was ready for the Monday group to have their turn there. Not ideal.
---Rita_H on 4/21/14

Wow Scott, I wasn't expecting an answer like that when I asked this.

The only non-church activity in our building is that Alcoholics Anonymous meet one evening per week. On that day no other meetings are held in the building so they have privacy for their meeting which must, for obvious reasons, be very private.

Gun show, car show, home improvement show, Honda goldwing show, BMW awards ceremony, oh wait we are the ones at the convention center. We will hopefully have a place of our own soon. yeah no more load out, and fully functional kids rooms (they need it the most).
