Thank you Luke and Bryan great point and I appreciate the help.

Iron sharpens iron as the book of proverbs says. In many discussions I have had to think and better understand what I believe.

Those who do not listen or explore their own beliefs do not really understand what they believe. They just parrot words they were told and do not think. When you said you did not know that proved you actually think about what you believe.

Then why did Jesus say if you want to be filled the Holy Spirit ask God to fill you. If you ask your earthly father for a fish will he give you a serpent? Then how much more will your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to those ask. Why did Jesus tell the apostles to wait for the Holy Spirit to be a witness? No power not a very effective witness. Funny Jesus was on the earth for over 29 years he did not start his ministry until the Holy Spirit came on him. Why, did he need it? He is God is he not? He is the Holy Spirit is he not? Why did it happen that way? He who has ears to hear let him hear.
---Bryan on 5/16/14

Oh...sorry, I misunderstood your question about (Acts 8:14-16).
Why didn't these folks receive the Holy Spirit, though they had been baptized?

That's a good question, to which I have no answer. But if the Holy Spirit ever gives me that answer, I'll let you know.
---David on 5/16/14

The reason the folks in ((Acts 8:14-16) had not received the Holy Spirit, when baptized, was due to the fact that they were Gentile believer's, believer's who had not yet been invited to the wedding.

The receiving of the Holy Spirit, was the Gentile's invitation to the wedding,(Matthew 22:1-10).

I didn't know this before you asked the question, thanks for asking it. The Lord has blessed us both with the answer to this mystery.
---David on 5/16/14

Dear David,
I believe what Samuel is trying to say is that a person needs to be saved in order to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Only believers in Christ are baptized in the Spirit, and are then filled with the Holy Spirit. The function of the Spirit is first to make us spiritually alive, when God draws us to Himself. Then we are spiritually baptized into one body in Christ, then we are filled with the Holy Spirit, and then sealed with the Spirit. The functions of the Spirit happens all at once. You cannot be baptized or indwelled by the Spirit before you are saved. And you are saved when you are make spiritually alive with Christ Eph. 2:1-10. Agape
---Luke on 5/16/14

You can't befilled with the Holy Spirit unless your born again. Cause the Holy Spirit does not live in dead things. You don't get filled with the Holy Spirit then you get saved. The Holy Spirit calls you to repentance. If you listen then you repent now your spirit is back alive. Now ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit. That is what Jesus said.
---Bryan on 5/15/14

That passage says they received the Holy Spirit, it does not say they were saved.
---David on 5/15/14

Then David you believe we do some works which then GOD rewards us for by saving us. Is that correct?

But GOD loves all of us now is that not correct?

Act 8:14-16
Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Explain this passage please.
---Samuelbb7 on 5/15/14

No, from what you have said, You believe you were saved before you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and I believe the receiving of the Holy Spirit is the first step in the salvation process.

I believe we are saved when God saves us, and not before.
We cannot save ourselves by what we do, but what we do brings us into God's favor. And he saves us because we are in his favor.
---David on 5/15/14

Well David you are talking about gifts of the HOLY SPIRIT and others things that we are given because we are saved and following GOD.

You are not talking about earning salvation. If I understand you correctly then we would be in agreement.

The parable of the Talents comes to mind.

---Samuelbb7 on 5/15/14

Yes we have to repent and be baptized to receive the HOLY SPIRIT.

And without the Gift of the Holy Spirit, you would not be saved.
You receive the gift by doing what God tells you to do.
It is a gift, not a wage.
What's the difference?
What you did, pleased God, and because you found favor in Gods eyes, you then received the gift because you found his favor.

Much like an child who does his chores, does them because he loves his parents. He does his chores because he knows it pleases them.
When they take him to Disney World, because he has found their favor, this is a gift, a way for his parents to show their love for him.

Same scenario, when we do what God tells us to do (John 14:21).
---David on 5/15/14

//If not, if we don't have to do anything to receive this Gift, why doesn't everyone have this gift?//

The reason not everyone gets the gift of the Spirit is because only those who already believe by faith, get the gift of the Spirit. And the gifts that the Spirit gives out, are not always the same for everyone.
Salvation comes by grace through faith, not by any work we can produce, for if it is by works, then it is no longer grace. Agape
---Luke on 5/15/14

Samuelbb7, you are taking the message in those verses in Luke 17 out of context.
The disciples were just given a lesson that they should forgive their brother's offenses towards them if their brother repented even 7 times in a day, that they should forgive them. They repplied, "Increase our faith", with that signifying that they did not have the capacity/heart to forgive so much.
Next, Jesus tells them that he is Lord and they are commanded. The unprofitable put down was for them expecting an increase of faith for something not needing it and for talking back.
---Nana on 5/14/14

Yes we have to repent and be baptized to receive the HOLY SPIRIT. It is not a work it is acceptance of what GOD is offering us. We are showing by our actions that we have turned to JESUS.

Doing what we are supposed to do gets us no reward.

Luke 17:10

So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.
---Samuelbb7 on 5/14/14

When my son was a year old. My wife and I gave him a party and gave him a lot of gifts. What did he do to earn our gifts to him? Nothing.---Samuel

Do you believe you have to repent and be baptized to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit?

If not, if we don't have to do anything to receive this Gift, why doesn't everyone have this gift?

Romans 8:11_13 "But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live."

Romans 12:1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."

Dear Bryan,
I agree with Trey, that the passage is pretty simple to understand. It is the same Spirit that rose Jesus from the dead, physical death. And that same Spirit gives us life, Spiritual life Ephesians 2:1-10.

Romans 8:11 is fairly simple to understand. Yes, I do believe that the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in me.

The Apostle Paul is simply restating what Christ said:

Dear David

When my son was a year old. My wife and I gave him a party and gave him a lot of gifts. What did he do to earn our gifts to him? Nothing.

The HOLY SPIRIT convicts of sin and leads us to turn to GOD. When we say yes to GOD we receive more gifts as His children. Why because now we are children of GOD.

So do your children have to earn their gifts by working hard for you.

// Luke
Caiaiphas would have been a bad choice, because he knew Jesus was the Son of God, and yet he still wanted to kill him (John 11, 45-52).//

Any choice Jesus makes is a wise choice. If He had chosen Caiaiphas, it would have being a wise choice. After all He is God. He can turn the heart of anyone. When Christ chose Paul, He could have chosen someone else who was already a believer, to do the work Paul did. Paul was persecuting Christ, by getting rid of His church, the members. But Jesus chose the right guy, it was a very wise choice.
Point is, whatever choice God choses, is always a wise choice. He is never wrong. Agape

Salvation is a gift from God, as is the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Didn't you have to do something to receive this gift?
(Acts 2:38)
Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Don't you give gifts to those who have done things for you, because they love you?
Did they do these things expecting a gift, or did they do them because they love you?

God gives gifts for the very same reason.
---David on 5/13/14

David your last comments totally contradict themselves. As for Romans 2 one must read all of Romans 2 to understand what Paul is saying beginning with chapter one and reading the WHOLE letter through Chapter 16.

Chapter1-2 what the earth was before the flood "the conscience of man"

Ch 3 purpose of law
Chapter 4 , Faith, Was not annulled by the law.

Ch 5-8 salvation through Jesus Christ alone based on the resurrection of Jesus Christ

Ch 9-11 Israel still God chosen earthly people, and God's everlasting Covenant promises to them.

Romans 12-16, instruction to those saved and members of Christ's Body.

No one can EARN eternal life.
---kathr4453 on 5/12/14

I think we are not using the words the same way.

First GOD loves everyone on earth and died to give them eternal life. John 3.

Second those who follow GOD and obeys Him are shown the Favor of GOD for they have become His Children by being born again and are following JESUS.

We do not earn salvation it is a free gift of love. But what we do brings honor to GOD and responsibility to us to be what GOD desires us to be. Just not sinning is not enough. Love has to be active in caring for others.

Matthew 25

Your Thoughts.

"( if the laws WERE really written on everyone's hearts, such reminders would be totally unnecessary)."

You equate a thing witten in the heart as that written on a rock . That on the rock just is, and lays there as if dead. That on the heart is written through a special chisel which is Love and Affection. As God is the God of the living, his word is alive and must be flamed in the heart always through love of God and love of neighbour lest it dies out. Mattew 24:12 "And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold."

I side with David. (Luke 1:28), Matthew 7:24), ("Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it", "doeth them").

Caiaiphas would have been a bad choice, because he knew Jesus was the Son of God, and yet he still wanted to kill him (John 11, 45-52).

This is what the parable in (Matthew 21, 33-40) is about.

We don't do it to earn favor. And Romans 2 says no such thing.--kathr4453

(Romans 2:6-7)
God will repay each person according to what they have done. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

In the above verses, doesn't Paul tell us God will reward us according to our deeds? And isn't the reward for those, who do those good deeds, Eternal Life?
If you have Eternal life, haven't you been saved?
Are we not saved by Grace? And isn't the Grace, by which we are saved, the favor of God?

The Lord is all wise. He could have chosen Pilate, or He could have chosen Caiaphas the high priest. No matter who He chose, it would have been a wise decision don't you think? Agape
---Luke on 5/11/14

Paul makes a good example for a case of unmerited favor, but Paul was not the example God sent us.

Why did Jesus choose Paul, when Paul did not choose Jesus?
Paul was Highly regarded member of the Pharisee's, a Shepherd to the sheep (Those under Law), like Billy Graham is in the Protestant church.

If you want to turn a flock of sheep, you must turn their Shepherd. If I could convert Billy's beliefs on Grace, wouldn't many of his sheep also follow?

Paul was so highly regarded, he was able to get the Jews to accept the Gentile believer's into the flock. Also notice, many of the other Pharisee's converted, not before, but after Paul's conversion.

Very wise move on the Lords part, don't you think?

I teach a man earns the favor of God, by doing what he tells him to do, through Gods Holy Spirit. And God will save those, who are in his favor.
This is also what the Author of Salvation (John 14:21-23) and Paul (Romans 2) taught.////

Those CHOSEN are already in God's favor doing His Will, God has before prepared for us to do. We don't do it to earn favor. And Romans 2 says no such thing.

When did Paul earn the favor of God? During his days of persecuting the church? He told King Agrippa that Jesus said to him:

Acts 26:16 "But rise and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you"

Seems to me that God chose Paul without Paul doing much to earn His favor.

Matt 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus called the Pharisees Hypocrites because, though they taught the Law, they did not keep the Law. (Romans 2:21-24)

The only way for our righteous, to exceed the righteousness of the Pharisee's, is not to be the hypocrites they were.
And there is only one way to do that. Teach and keep the Law of God.

Unmerited favor says, we don't have to keep Gods Laws to be seen as righteous.
Look in the gospels and see what Jesus called an act of righteousness. It was an act, not an inaction.

The problem is not with unmerited Grace. Which means we cannot earn salvation.

I agree, we can not earn salvation.

I teach a man earns the favor of God, by doing what he tells him to do, through Gods Holy Spirit. And God will save those, who are in his favor.
This is also what the Author of Salvation (John 14:21-23) and Paul (Romans 2) taught.

If a man is taught they can not gain the favor of God, through their obedience, they will be disobedient.

My brother, where did the Son of God, or any one of his disciples, teach Grace is the Unmerited favor of God?

Dear brother Samuel,
the problem with everyone is that they are all sinners. While we live in this body that is sinful, we will always sin. For all come short of the glory of God, that means all human beings. Not one is without sin. When they die and are resurrected, they will receive a new glorified body, then and only then will they be without sin. Agape

Some who teach that Grace is unmerited favor do make it a license to sin.

But the truth is that we are saved by the unmerited Grace from sin. So the grace which we do not deserve is what enables us to follow GOD and live for JESUS.

Rom 6:2

These are both true. The wrong interpretation of either will make the other false. I believe David has the wrong interpretation of John 14:21.

Many churches have discarded the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in favor of their Unmerited teachings of Grace.

Because not only do the Gospels of Jesus Christ not support these teachings of Grace, they oppose them.

Therefore, everything Jesus taught in the Gospels, which is opposed to their teachings, can not taught in these churches. Why? Because the Truth in the Gospels will expose these teachings to be false.
(John 14:21) is the Lord's teaching, as to how man gains the favor of God. But this is not being taught.

The results of Grace being the Unmerited favor of God?
This teaching gives the believer the License to sin (Jude vs 4).

It is not talking about every person, for the lost are spiritually dead in trespasses and sins.

Amen Luke many get hardened to only what their church teaches.

I wish I had been raised as a Christian. But the fact I did not believe the Bible has helped me in that I have read many different sides of theology and had to choose and study which one was correct.

Many use only one verse and do not compare scripture with scripture.

One thing I like to do is take all the scriptures on a topic and compare them. I also study what those who disagree with me. For as iron sharpens iron so listening to opposite viewpoints helps sharpen my thinking.

Dear David,
I believe you are correct. Most that preach bad seem to come from seminaries that already teach very different from other seminaries.
We can learn the truth by putting Scripture against Scripture. What happens is that many want to put their own spin on a passage, their own meaning, and change the meaning that God wanted to convey to us.
But we know this would happen, as long as men live, they will always fail somehow.
Then begins what is called, "theological" bias. Students in church follow what the church teaches and defends it even if they are wrong. It is hard to leave what you were taught already, their hearts get hardened, and they will fight you even if their soul is at stake. Agape

He uses other people to teach us.

I had a discussion recently, with someone who believes this too.
How will you know if what that man teaches is of Christ, unless it is taught to you, through Gods Holy Spirit?

Can we really test the Truth with scripture alone?
We could, using multiple writers from the Bible, but that's not what has happened. Our witnesses, in the church today, are the very teachers of the doctrine men come to believe in.

For example, Men say Grace is the Unmerited favor of God. Who is the witness to this teaching, to which some believe Paul taught?
Billy Graham teaches this, so he becomes their witness. When this happens, these teachings need no other witness from the Bible.
---David on 5/6/14

Yes the laws will be written on our heart. But we must first be taught.

Eph 4:21

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

When people are taught correctly GOD writes His word in our hearts. He uses other people to teach us. But we must accept the word into our heart.

Tit 1:9

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

We are to be taught by the entire Bible. 2Tim 3:16-18

We must check from scripture for what we believe comparing all scripture on the topic. Not just accepting men's words. Because they say so.

Dear Strongaxe,
there is no way anyone can know for sure who is saved and who is not. And even if we believed that someone can lose salvation, that too is impossible to know for only God would know.
All we can judge are the fruits of those who answer. Do they normally attack you, stalk you all over the place, or consistently call you names? Then we can assume, only, that they must not be saved, for any child of God will never do those things. They will answer the questions to the best of their ability, and be kind to others, always showing the love of Christ.
As for the written law, many are confused in separating law and grace. A little study in hermeneutics will help them. It takes a little work if they are really interested. Agape
---Luke on 5/5/14

Many believer's, because they trust in the teachings of men, are confused as to what the Law actually is, that Law God puts into our mind, and writes on our hearts.
Those Laws which become the very conscience of Gods children.
Those Laws which tell us, not only it is wrong to steal, but also to give aid to those in need.

Because of this confusion and not using these Laws, which teach us Good from Evil, they miss out on a very special relationship with God.
The relationship Jesus taught.

How would you best define the Law of Grace?

It's interesting how God says, "I will put my Laws in their minds and write them on their hearts", but many miss the fact that God calls them Laws,.... not suggestions.

And why is it called a Law if there is no punishment when we break those Laws. There's a reason God calls them Laws. That reason is because if you do not keep them, you will be punished.

If you choose not to believe this, break one of mans Laws and see if you are punished.

As members of the church we are part of the Bride. When I got married and I made a mistake or did wrong that did not make me unmarried. I was in a relationship and needed to repair and keep that relationship going. I had not gotten a divorce and left my wife.

In the Church today there are two main understandings. One that people are once saved always saved from Calvin and the Security of the believer.

This I cannot agree with.

Then there is the Arminian - Wesleyan. That it is possible for us to choose to be lost by leaving JESUS. Which I believe.

We are to keep our eyes on JESUS and aim for perfection and settle for nothing less. But also remember first john.

So how would you want Jesus to treat you when you have sinned? Judgment, humiliation, rejection, condemnation? Remember the man who was forgiven a little.
---Bryan on 5/1/14

Bryan, when the Holy Spirit shows us our sin we repent and are forgiven but that doesn't mean that we can continue in that sin. Once we are made aware of sin our eyes are opened to it and therefore if we commit that sin again we are guilty and our sin remains. John 9:39-41.

So all you so called christains that sin Jesus leaves you? Cause he can't be in you any more. What if you sin and don't know. Does he leave you then too? What the teacher is trying to tell us if you don't know Jesus there will be no change for redemption. Because if your born again he will never leave you or for sake you in a nother scripture. So make up your mind he will never leave you or he will leave you?
---Bryan on 4/30/14

Jesus cannot dwell where sin is so if you believe as Paul does that no good thing dwells in your flesh...well? And if your spirit and flesh are separate then where does Jesus dwell? John 8:34-38.

Jesus said to abide in Him. To abide in Him we must abide in His Word and practice it. His Word is what lives in us but it does not possess our bodies. John 8:31-32. The Holy Spirit leads us and teaches only the Truth so that we can become one with Him. John 15:26-27.

When Jesus prayed that His followers would be one with Him and His Father, what did He mean? His Father and He are one because they have the same goals and plans. They are one in purpose and method. John 17:14-26.

Good points both Luke and David.

I believe another small part is that JESUS knew the Perfect will of GOD in a way we cannot.
---Samuelbb7 on 4/30/14

I believe we have the same spirit, but not the same power.
Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit, and Power.

If we had had this power, the sick would be lining up to see us, as they did with Jesus.

// If you don't believe that you can lay hands on the sick and they will recover. Then you want do it.//

Dear Bryan,
If you believe you can lay hands on the sick and they will recover, why are you not going to hospitals and curing the sick? I have not heard your name on the news lately.
When a believer receives the gifts of the Spirit, not everyone is a healer, preacher, missionary, and not everyone is a mother who teaches her children the gospel. You assume too much. We use what the Spirit gives us, and we use it when God wants us to use it on whomever He wants to save. No one that God wants to save misses out. If He desires to call someone home who has been sick, He will call that one home. You will never cure him or her. Agape

No I don't control Christ and I don't control God. His word is given to use all, how we use it is how it will produce in our life. If you don't believe that you can lay hands on the sick and they will recover. Then you want do it. If you don't believe the word of God can change a person life you want share it. That is not controling God, that is doing his will. He said go in power and share the Gospel. It works just like God said. His word given to use. By what Jesus did.
---Bryan on 4/29/14

Luke you try to get people to believe a religion. I just share the Gospel. God so loved the world he gave. I don't care what religion you may be that is good news. God's word is for all and it is to be shared that way.
---Bryan on 4/29/14

I think that we Christians sometimes label things too much. We refer to the spirit of this and the spirit of that etc.

GOD Himself raised Jesus from the dead. That same God (for there is only ONE) lives in our mortal bodies and gives us life. He cares for us and knows every detail about us.

I think that Christians confuse themselves and others once they begin discussing 'spirits'.

Our lives are in God's hands. We go to HIM in prayer and He gives whatever help is needed and He gives it via the way He chooses. We don't need to label anything.

Dear Bryan,
Something always drives me to answer you. I believe you have taken a passage and miss-use it for many reasons. First of all, you don't control Christ who lives in you, He controls you. You don't tell Him what you want and He just does it. You are not in control, He is. If He wants you to go to South America, somehow, someway, you will be going to South America whether you like South America or not.
You might think and even belief you can demand something, and Jesus does what you demand. That is so far from the truth. God uses you, you do not use God. But right now you belief whatever your heart wants He gives you, but you are very wrong.
We are slaves to God, that is the Christian life, He is not a slave to us. Agape

The HOLY SPIRIT is what lives in us. Why because we have been Born Again.

"Do you believe that the same spirit that rose Jesus from the dead lives in your mortal body and gives life to it?" Yes, I know that He does.
