Anxiety itself may not be a disorder, but anxiety can become disordered.
---learner2 on 5/29/15

Judy, schizophrenia is a mental illness. A couple good examples of behavior disorders are Oppositional Defiance Disorder and Explosive Anger Disorder. The behavior disorders are merely bad behavior choices that the individual makes slapped with a "disorder" label as an excuse.
---Jed on 5/29/15

Judy Sorry but Anxiety is not a disorder. Anxiety is the builtin mechanism by God,a sensor that responds to situations which are strange or threatening. The next move is our body responds to the anxiety and produces adrenalin which gives heightened senses and strength which prepare a person to either fight or run. Without feeling anxious about a situation one would be easy pry for man or beast. God Bless

I'd like him to cure mine.
---Mike on 5/18/15

Jed, a mental disorder needs supernatural deliverance and a behavioral one does not? What is a mental disorder to you, schizophrenia? What is a behavioral disorder? Is anxiety disorder a behavioral disorder to you?
---Judy on 4/24/15

If course God can cure mental illness, and He does. But the ill person must want to be cured. Most don't, as there are many financial benefits to being labeled 'mentally ill'.

Also, it's important to know whether the "illness" is actually mental illness or merely a behavior disorder. Many lump the two together, but there is a bug difference. Mental illness would require supernatural deliverance, whereas behavior disorders require only submission to God.

"Can God cure mental illness?"

Sure He can & does! Ask the man who Jesus restored to his right mind.

"When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind, and they were afraid."
Mark 5:5 (NIV)

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Matt 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick (G4583 = crazy), and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.

Matt 17:18 And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.

There was no sickness before Adam and Eve fell from grace, there will be no sickness, or weeping because of sickness, after Jesus returns.

God's perfect love cures us of fear > 1 John 4:18 > "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18) I have found that every personality torment in me has been connected with some sort of fear.

But if we obey how God says to pray, "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (in Philippians 4:7).

"and be renewed in the spirit of your mind," (in Ephesians 4:23)

Sorry you just don't get it Cluny. But, the question was for Helen to answer. :)
---Leon on 10/14/14

Adam's sin brought illnesses and death to all mankind. His sin, was imputed to us. And now all who are lost are found in sin, and for us to be saved we need to repent of our sin.
---Luke on 10/15/14

\\Helen: Would you agree mental illness is caused by SIN?\\

Not really.

There is a big difference between saying that sickness (of all kinds) and death exist in our world because of sin.

It's another thing to say that mental sickness IS sin.

Can you make the distinction, Leon?

I have diabetes and gout because I live in a world spoiled by centuries of sin, but these are diseases to be treated and managed, not sins of which to repent.

And do you remember the blind man in John 9? "Who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?" Jesus said, in effect, "Sin had nothing to do with his blindness."

Glory to Jesus Christ!

"Leon, Sin is not mental illness, nor is mental illness sin. Sin is deliberate rebellion against God. Mental illness is sickness of the mind .... It also can be demon possession."
---helen4633 on 10/13/14

Helen: Would you agree mental illness is caused by SIN? Did not God warn Adam that to disobey (SIN, rebel against) Him would be ill advised (foolish, crazy) because it would lead to death?
---Leon on 10/14/14

Anthony, God can cure any illness, or He can refuse to heal anyone.
All the illnesses and deaths are the result of original sin. The body is cursed and it will die. It's all the result of Adam's sin.
The cases found in the Bible of many man who did terrible things, are not called mental illness. Mental illness usually becomes a life time thing once someone gets it unless God heals them.
---Luke on 10/14/14

\\I believe some mental illness is demon possession. If you have ever been in a mental institution, you would agree.
---shira4368 on 10/13/14\\

I understand what you are saying, shira.

However to say that a given case is the result of demons would require a dx by elimination. In other words, try all available therapies first to make sure.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

God can heal anything He wants to. Mental illness is like a physical illness. We treat it. I believe some mental illness is demon possession. If you have ever been in a mental institution, you would agree.

Let's not forget King Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 4:28-34) & the demon possessed man (Lk. 8:26-36), etc.

As plain as your question is Anthony, there are always bloggers, like Cluny, who are paralyzed by their own analysis (probably a kind of mental illness) :)

Yes Helen, I agree, SIN is the foremost form of mental (mind/soul) illness affecting all of mankind. As many as believe on Jesus will receive the healing He made available, to us all, by His death, burial & resurrection.

Good question. He hasn't healed mine. But if one only pursues the Holy Spirit and not set goals for the opposite gender and one dismisses the unfair things of life and stores treasure up in heaven where it cannot be stolen or corrode, then may be God will heal one's mental illness. Yet, of hating life, Job hated life. Jeremiah asked why he was born to see trouble and go to the grave in shame. Moses asked of God, why don't you take me out. Solomon spoke of the day of death being better than the day of birth.

How many miracles have you or members of your worldly denominational church done, StephenG?

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 10/8/14

If God can create the universe and everything in it as he spoke it into existance, he surely can heal the sick - without man's medications. God, through another person, can heal that sick person right on the spot - even "mental illnesses having a biochemical basis." Did Jesus need to wait two weeks for the water to ferment before turning water into wine? How long did Jesus need to wait for the dead to come back to life?

Christians can do greater miracles than Jesus and not by the help of man's technology.
---Steveng on 10/7/14

Yes, God can heal mental illness. By Jesus' stripes we are healed. Our healing has been paid for by Jesus' death on the Cross.

Yes.

But frequently God works through natural processes, such as medicines.

Many mental illnesses have a biochemical basis.
