Good points Haz, barb, Richard, Jed and Josef.

All true. We are not to live ins sin. Because we are saved by grace.

Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world,
---Samuelbb7 on 3/6/16

1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

If anyone thinks that they are righteous through the keeping of any law, spiritual or otherwise, then that one is thinking self righteously. "I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.-Josef 1/8/16

Amen!

My righteousness:
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Christ's righteousness:
Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith

Amen!

"Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun, in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear." Matt 13:41-43.

"That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood Zacharias son of Barachias who you slew between the temple and the altar". Matt 23:32-36.

Titus 3:5 - Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy he saved us By the washing of regeneration ad renewing of the Holy Ghost

Romans 3:1O AS it it written There is none righteous No Not one
---RichardC on 1/20/16

We are only made righteous from the work of Christ Jesus, not from our own.

With that being said, no Christian, should ever be made to feel ashamed for living and promoting a godly lifestyle. In my experience, the term "self-righteous" is a derogatory name used by people who are living godless lifestyles to try to guilt or shame those who promote wholesome, conservative Christian living.

We are made righteous through the work of Christ, but His righteousness should affect our works as well. If your works don't reflect righteousness, you may want to re-consider the condition of your soul.

To become Righteous we must be Born Again. Then those who truly love GOD will obey GOD.

2John 1:6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
---Samuelbb7 on 1/19/16

Trey, "and our iniquities like the wind have taken us away". Iniquity is sin and sin is transgression of the law. God is not saying thru His prophet that His people cannot become righteous. He is telling them why they are not righteous and why they have been blown away from Him.

"Little children let no man deceive you. He who does righteousness is righteous even as He is righteous. He who commits sin is of the devil for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil." 1st John 3 3-12.

How do we know?

Look at yourself,...look for the most obvious sign of self-righteousness. That sign is the ability to judge others.

In order to judge anyone, about anything, you must see yourself as being righteous.
How else can you call someone a liar, when you have told lies? If you have told lies, are you not a liar too? How many lies must you tell before you will see you are guilty for what you condemn others for?

How can you, in all righteousness, call someone a liar when you are guilty of what you condemn them for?

As far as I know, Jesus Christ is the only one who can judge the liar. And we all know the reason his judgment is righteous.
---David on 1/11/16

It would depend on whether one wants to be righteous in God's sight or righteous in the sight of Paul.

God set His standard for righteousness and gave it to His prophets to give to His people. His son used the same standard to teach righteousness to His followers and we can see for ourselves that the standard for being righteous is the same measurement used from beginning to end.

In the book of Revelation the saints keep the commandments of God, those born of the woman in Rev 12 keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus and those who have the right to the tree of life and the right to enter thru the gates into the kingdom keep the commandments of God. "His commandments are not grievous".

If we can forget about our pain, no matter how great or trivial, if we can forget about any thought of self-worth, if we can lay all our plans, hopes, dreams, ambitions, fears, anything, at the foot of the Cross and leave them there, if you can stop worrying about whether I AM righteous, and just follow what God has commanded, then you shouldn't have to ask this question.

This is why I entered the monastic life.

Pray for me,
the unworthy monk Brendan

Josef, good answer. I agree.
---john1944_j on 1/8/16

John1944, any man who thinks, and/or states, he's righteous because of something he has done or not done, is self righteous. The man who knows and proclaims his righteous is of the LORD, through the faith of Jesus, is righteous.

Your response to God when you die is it "Lord, Lord, did [I] not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons" or "you are my salvation"
---Scott1 on 1/8/16

My understanding is that righteousness, like all virtues, has a self-forgetfulness about it.
