I can certainly understand why people may be moving out of larger (esp. "mega" churches) IF they are moving into a smaller more spontaneous group. Such a group may challenge them more spiritually and give them more freedom for a variety of unique ministries. If the move away from institutionalized church is merely a result of fault-finding,I believe it would not be productive spiritually.
| Why Did Lot's Wife Look | |
A more puzzling question might be to explain what happened to Lot and his daughters after their escape. Lot was somehow afraid to live on Zoar (do we know why?) so he dwelt in a cave with his daughters. The daughters deceived him and we read: Gen 19:36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. Was it THAT important to preserve the lineage of Lot? Couldn't he have found a wife somewhere?

//when I ask them how the USA will pay all that debt back. I wonder why they are speechless// ---Sag on 11/20/09 They don't answer because NOBODY knows. And the present administration would rather not think about it. I doubt we will ever pay it back. We are like the family who has all the luxeries of life bought on credit. Everyone thinks they are "wealthy". But in fact, all that keeps them from bankruptcy, is the good will of their creditors...which cannot last forever.

Rhonda-- What legal charges would you bring against Mima? I don't believe he has broken any law. Unless you can prove some damages, I don't think either police or lawyer would be interested in your "case". Many high school girls hold jobs in the community -- they meet and serve the public. Most of them date young men, often without a chaparone. They often plan for college after high school. There they may live totally away from parental supervision. If they cannot, by this age, make independent judgements about the things they hear from others, I think they must have been greatly overprotected or completely dominated at home.

Mark Eaton -- Interesting observation. I think it was this way because, before Jesus came, there was a prescribed way of dealing with sin...presenting appropriate animals for sacrifice at the Temple. Jesus came claiming to forgive sin without any of this ingrained ritual. No wonder they doubted. Today, there is a prescribed way of dealing with illness. If informal remedies aren't effective, the usual procedure is to visit a physician. Jesus healed without modern medical science and may still do so. But this method of healing is so unfamiliar, many doubt it. Modern medicine is DOUBTLESS a gift from God. However, even Christians may fail to give Him credit, unless a "miraculous" healing takes place.

MarkV -- I've noticed the alliances, too, among various ones who post here. It's not just that they agree with one another. Soon they begin to encourage one another to attack someone, to "prove" that person wrong. Whatever was the issue in the beginning, becomes less important than proving oneself superior in interpretation or spirituality. Sometimes it doesn't even matter if it's a minor point in Christianity... or one that no human could possibly discern. As in the Middle Ages, they would argue vehemently over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.
| Will America Be Destroyed | |
My theory is that the founders, predominantly Christian, were wise enough to realize that the document they were writing might be used by people of various faiths (or of various doctrines within Christianity). Thus they deliberately described God in terms least likely to be questioned. To stimulate needless arguments about the nature of God, would only serve to discredit the entire document. As they were facing a crisis, they could not afford this.
| Another Great Depression Coming | |
My father lived through the Great Depression of the thirties. He always told me, if we have another like it, NOT to sell my stocks. He didn't and came out smelling like a rose. I'm glad I didn't, but it will take a long time to regain it ALL. I took some of what I had left after the crash and bought some real estate when prices were low. That's making up for the income I lost (I'm retired without any other income). I bought some gold years ago when the price was very low, too. Gold is not a good investment if you need income, but the way money is being printed and the value dropping, it would be good security. NO I do not trust ANY of the numbers that are coming from the gov't, esp about jobs!

Tom -- Sorry to see you go (but I don't blame you). Hope you'll check in again someday.! Rhonda -- This "high school age" girl, unless she's being grossly overprotected, is going to meet many people who present her with many new ideas... even many "leading questions" as you say. She is not a child, and I'm sure she has a mind of her own. Apparently her mother had enough confidence in her to let her go door to door selling tickets without an adult accompanying her. She probably assumed her daughter had enough common sense not to get into trouble of some kind. Mima may have given her a chance to gain the greatest thing in life. Who knows how many lives might be changed as a result.

Cluny -- Thanks for your response and thanks for straightening me out. The blogs don't go back far enough for me to check. From the beginning I was curious about you...assumed you were a man...wondered about the name "Cluny". I was sure you responded to someones's inquiry (who also thought you were a male)saying you were female and "Cluny" was a nickname you'd had for many years. I was disappointed (not at your gender)but that there wasn't some more interesting derivation for the name "cluny"! I don't know how, but I got it wrong. Sorry.

Nurse Robert and ralph7477--- Aw,....shucks! You embarrass me. I think a lot of you both, too!
| Illegals Work In The USA | |
NurseRobert-- //Good question, since the issue of illegal aliens has gone back decades, why hasn't the governemnt, Republican as well as democrats done anything about it?// Indeed a good question. If a serious effort had been made to enforce immigration laws, perhaps the 9-11 bombers would not have freely overstayed their visas. Asian illegals have known for at least 30 yrs. that the way to gain entry to the US is to enter by way of Canada and they won't be questioned. In this politicized era, it has been a politically flammable issue. Bush wanted to grant amnesty to some, also tighten up immigration laws, but so many citizens objected by mail, fax and phone calls that considerstion of it was dropped by Congress.

Moderator -- I suggest you read the book. I haven't read it THOROUGHLY so my summary might be inaccurate. He seems to suggest that many of the faults of modern American churches (which he describes well) can be avoided by moving away from the church and developing a deeper personal relationship with the Lord, led by His guidance and the Bible alone. The author sees this leading to some sort of "Revolution" in Christianity. He claims that by the year 2025, "Only about one third of the population will rely upon the local congregation .... one third will do so through alternative forms of faith-based community, and one third will realize their faith through the media, the arts, and other cultural institutions."

Kath4453-- Of course we go through Jesus to worship the father! But are you saying we shouldn't worship Jesus? He is God, too.

Over fifty years ago, I was a girl of fifteen. An adult woman, friend of the family, with with whom I stayed for the Summer, sent me to a Christian summer camp. I learned of the Lord Jesus there and accepted Him as Savior. My parents, who attended a liberal church spoadically, were incensed! The woman was no longer a "friend" and I was "grounded". I can see how they felt. But here it is, more than fifty years later and I still love the Lord. Not only that, but both my parents became believers before they passed away. How painful it would have been if my parents had taken further action against the person who shared the Gospel with me and how grateful I still am that she did.

larry--Luk 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART HIS MOUTH SPEAKETH. Nobody is "profiling". Hassan repeatedly spoke what he believed, to anyone who would listen. "Profiling" is assuming beliefs and motives on the base of race or nationality. Yelling "Allah Akbar" before firing upon unarmed men and women is a pretty clear statement of belief and motive..
| Claim You Are Christian | |
Most Christians move within a group of believers who agree with them on doctrine and expression of Christianity. One of the values of this site (if it can be called a value) is that whatever you write about your most cherished and unquestioned beliefs, somebody is likely to accuse you of apostasy and do so with rancor. It places you in the position of having to practice Christian kindness and long-suffering toward your "enemies".
| Can You Afford Obamacare | |
I'll be very disappointed if any insurance, government or otherwise, mandates this. (I speak as a 5 yr, survivor of breast cancer). None of the members of the "committee" was a physician. They decided this on the basis of "science", meaning STATISTICS. If you are a 40yr. old it's cold comfort to know that fewer women forty have breast cancer than those fifty or over. This is the way medical decisions are made in the UK and Canada. One of the best things about the practice of medicine in the USA, is that tests and treatment are individually decided...by the patient and her physician.
