| How To Properly Spank My Kids | |
Anon, I've been a teacher and I see the exact opposite. Kids from families that fail to consistently and reasonably displine often end up with problems. As preschoolers, my kids got beat up by a friends kids. That friend did not believe in physically discplining her own kids. What happened when her kids beat up my kids? This mom lovingly went up to them put her arm them and cojouled them. Now almost 16 years later, her two kids show what can happen when a child is not taught and disciplined. One has already been in prison twice and the other can't or won't hold down a job, but somehow comes up with money for his drug addiction. I know it isn't all me or my husband, but our own kids are now happily married and stable productive citizens.

I think that the punishment should be given as soon after the problem as possible so that #1 the child quickly and easily associates the punishment with the incorrect action, and #2 so that the parent is more likely to be consistent. If the parent waits, they often forget or lose heart because they don't want to punish the child later on when the child may not be acting up. The only situation where quick punishment should not happen is when the parent feels that they may not have control of their anger. I believe that more harm than good is done by punishment when punishment doesn't stop at a reasonable threshhold. As to stripping a child prior to spanking I see no need for it and think it is too wierd.
| Prove Earth Is 6,000 Years Old | |
As I and others have said here, men can write, translate, mistranslate and even make up books. As of yet, I know of no man or group of men that could create the world we live on. My belief is that the record that is shown in the earth is more infalliable than the bible, because men could not have put it together. So if snow and ice layers on antartica and greenland extend back more than 6000 years or if stratified rock extends back more than 6000 years, who am I to doubt God that put that record in the ice and in the rocks? I know that no man could have put 2.5 miles of ice and snow ontop of mountains in antartica, or 6000 feet of sedimentary rock and petrified sand dunes ontop of dinosaur prints.

All punishment naturally has to take away something of value. Sending them to their room is essentially imprisoning them, denying them their freedom and withholding your affection. Denying them dinner is making them go hungry, depriving them of nourishment and making them fear about starvation. Taking away a toy or valued item is like stealing from them and violating their private property rights. What I am pointing out is that those who get all up in arms about spanking, don't seem to have a problem with these other things. If spanking starts a circle of violence, don't the above punishments likewsie teach kids to starve others, take away freedom and confine people unwillingly, or take other's property (steal)?
| Should Abortion Be A Choice | |
Abortion is aborting life. If it wasn't a life, selfish people wouldn't feel a need to stop it from continuing to live and grow. The only choice should be where a woman's life is at a real risk, at that point I believe she has the right to determine whether she preserves her own life, or that of her unborn child. I really feel for others who have been raped and now carry a child. The crime against them was horrendous and its effects are now compounded by a life within them that reminds them every moment of that horrible violation. But, the child is innocent and killing an innocent to ease our mental suffering cannot be justified. Adoption is then the best answer.
| Is It A Sin To Be On Welfare | |
Trish, If social security had run as intended you would be right. Unfortunately, during the early years no one put in enough. Then there is also the fact, that the money that was paid in by workers wasn't saved, but rather was spent by politicians, so it was already used supposedly for the generation that was paying in, it just wasn't used for retirement, it was used primarily for social programs, etc. Social security since its beginning was turned from being a retirement program, to being a welfare program and it is just getting worse. By the time I retire, supposedly there will not be anything there for me and there will only be 2 workers for every one person on social security. Obviously this won't work.

Sending a kid to their room works only if the child thinks it is a punishment. If their room has a stereo, tv, gameboy, xbox, etc. its really no punishment at all, its a time to get out of chores and not have to be bothered by Mom and Dad. I am not against sending kids to their room, but please be warned (by one who has already raised a few kids that seem to have turned out alright) that the sending kids to their room punishment isn't always as effective for the kid, but is often given by parents just to get the kid out of their hair.
| I Am A New Christian | |
I suggest you read the Gospels through from begining to end. Don't get too worried about deep meanings. The central message that we can get from Christ in the Gospels is that God loves us and wants us to love and serve him and our fellow men. After you are familiar with Christ's ministry and teachings, youI should read the letters of Peter, James and John. Then read Paul and only after you are well grounded would I get into the highly symbolic Book of Revelation. Also, I would always suggest trying to understand Paul and others by using Christ's words, not the other way around. Many twist Christ's words to make them match their interpretation of Paul. In reality it should go the other way. People should make Paul's words match Christ's.
| Is The Bible Literal | |
The Bible is not perfect and the minority of people who continue to dogmatically claim that it is perfect do christiantiy a disservice. Thinking individuals can sometimes see the mistakes that exist now and can also read multiple earlier manuscript versions or alternatate translations that have variations which cannot all be correct. I understand the concern with those who feel that you have to believe it all or you wonder what to believe. But turning a blind eye to the truth can't make facts change.
| Obama Is Bankrupting America | |
Though Obama is spending at a record pace, he proposes ever more spending. Still, it gets worse: 1. Sending our jobs and companies overseas as he proposes "cap and trade" on our country that will favor India and China that don't care about the way they dirty the environment or about sweat shop labor. 2. Proposing a "service draft" for young people. Unjustly, not only will the next generation's earnings be taxed to pay for Obama's spending, he also wants to tax their lives as well - requiring them to work for free, as if the interest and debt payments for Obama's mistakes isn't sacrifice enough he proposes they be slaves of the state (him) for a year or two.
| Is The Bible Literal | |
I take the principles and doctrines as literal as seems reasonable given other scriptures that also deal with the same topic. As to the history, science, geology and geography, I don't worry quite so much about that. I realize the bible wasn't trying to teach ancient history or science so much as teach us how we should act in our daily lives. So I don't get too worried when the two creation accounts or other factoids that seem wierd. I focus instead on the consistent messages that teach me not to lie, steal, kill etc. and Christ's teachings that I should love God and my fellow men.
| Obama Is Bankrupting America | |
We all know this charade must end sometime soon or we will have dug ourself into a hole we cannot get out of. My real concern is for my kids and grandkids. We are effectively pushing onto the next generation or beyond, the burden for our mistakes (and the mistakes of the leaders we have elected). I faulted Bush and a Republican house and senate. I now fault the President Obama and the Democrat house and senate I wish we could undo it all, but we can't. All we can hope for is to stop the mistakes and to begin to work our way out. But so far, we haven't stopped making mistakes. And, most want a hand out, rather than to work their way out.
| Why Christians Disagree | |
The Bible gets interpreted by men with different knowledge, different agendas, different experiences, different biases and different abilities. As men we are imperfect. Unfortunately but obviosly, everyone thinks their own thinking is perfect, so they then automatcally assume that someone who disagrees with them must be evil or an idiot. The Bible is unclear on some topics and covers ever so many topics, so there will always be areas of disagreement because we as humans are fallible.
| When Did Dinosaurs Die Out | |
Dinosaurs are part of a fossil record that goes back what appears to be millions of years. I believe that the world as created by God, is in essence a record created by God. I do not believe that God intends to deceive us. I have been to fossil beds in Nevada, Utah and the Dakotas and have also been to dinosaur foot print sites in 3 different locations. I've seen fossilized bones, egg and dung. I've also seen dinosaur footprints in Southern Utah that are at the bottom of thousands of feet of sandstone rock that scientists (with whom I agree) say are much older than just a few thousand years. A man can write a book, but no man could create a world.
