Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort experienced when simultaneously holding two or more conflicting cognitions: ideas, beliefs, values or emotional reactions. Too much of it and your head will explode, causing a very messy cleanup for others, and possible death if a skull fragment strikes another in the wrong place. It's the reason I stay away from the religious, I'd hate to die from such a cause, or cleanup for that matter.
