Explain The Lords Prayer To Me

Why do you think the "Lords Prayer" has the words" lead us not into temptation" when it's not even remotely probable that God would lead anyone to temptation?

greetings. The original verse reads,"lead us away from temptation".
---earl on 8/21/07

It is true that God does not tempt any body nor is He tempted by evil, but being led into temptation is a different story. Take Job for instance, Satan was allowed to tempt Job to prove Job's loyalty. I could go further, but that is enough.

to take a part of the Lords prayer is impossible..because like all scripture the whole context has to be considered,(E.W.bullinger Numbers in Scripture)hence it means search the scriptures daily and be obedient to the Word of God and careful of teachings alone

Why did God use the words lead us not into temptation in the Lord's prayer?
---collie on 2/21/06

I am a new believer and have read an awesome book called "New Believer's Guide to Prayer" by Greg it, it says..."When we pray for God not to lead us into temptation, we are asking God to guide us so that we will not get out of His will and place ourselves in the way of temptation."
---amber9358 on 8/25/05

The importance of this Prayer is Jesus is showing and pointing out to us that God is our Heavenly Father, a Fatherhood relationship scenario. Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we are privileged to be accepted as Children of God. John 1. No any other book has shown mankind that truth. Jesus is the truth, way and life.

I think the Lord's prayer is the perfect prayer. It has the perfect outline. Fist we pray to God the Father. We praise him. We ask for His will on Earth as in heaven. Ask for food for today. We ask forgiveness for our sins and we forgive those who sin against us. We ask God to keep us from temptation and rescue us from evil. More praise. Jn 15:16,16;24 We ask in Jesus name. Hebrews 7:25

Gay, there are basically 2 divisions of original Greek manuscripts obtained from the temples in different regions. The Alexandrine including the Western texts which agree with the Latin versions. These were used for the Textus Receptus. The later is the Constantinopolitan or Byzantine manuscripts, these include more manuscripts which had never before been cited, and are in agreement with the more modern Greek manuscripts.
---Eloy on 4/23/05

What in the world is the Constantinopolitan MSS? I've never heard of that. Also, there is a scripture that says we should not change one word of the Bible. I think when Jesus prayed this prayer to His father(by the way that is how Jesus taught us to pray)He was so tempted to back out of being crucified. He could have called on legions of Angels to save Him, but God helped Him go through with the crucifiction. We are all tempted. But we have to pray for strength.

1st cliff, thanks for pointing that out to me, you are absolutely right in that the last fragment isn't shown in the Constantinopolitan MSS. So The Lord's Prayer should rightly be read, "After this manner therefore pray you all: Our Father in heaven, sacred be your name. Let your kingdom come, let your will be done as in heaven, also upon the earth. Give us today our main essential bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And let us not enter into temptation, but save us from evil. Amen. Mathhew 6:9-13.
---Eloy on 4/21/05

1st cliff, it is found in the Aramaic Peshitta text dated in the 3rd century, and it is also found in our original Greek Textus Receptus from which the King James translators used for the 1611 Authorized Version. Also the fragment's content is Biblically sound, and therefore it does not require dispute.

God led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. Why would we be exempt? God's word says We will not be tempted above that we are able, but with the temptation, He will make a way of escape that we would be able to bear it. We choose.
---Julie on 4/20/05

Eloy;"for yours is the kingdom ,power and glory, forever amen" is not in earlier manuscripts, which means that it was added later or spurious. what does that say for the rest of the text?

Thank you for sharing that eloy!!! You just made my day. I have been stumped on that one for a long time.
---CarolT on 4/20/05

Life is a test. I's prefer to say that whatever difficulties we have is a test, rather than temptation from God. Yes, the enemy is like a lion - looking for its victim. But God would not allow any test (through temptation) beyond our capacity. Nevertheless, it's wise to pray deliverance from these if we can.
---Rhyce on 4/20/05

In Aramaic (Syriac) it reads, "And let us not enter into temptation, but save us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen." Mathhew 6:13.

Satan works 24/7 with his minions trying to capture souls; he even Tempted Jesus on several occassions even when he knew he was God,Right up & into the Garden of Getsamane. So it is nice to have an aid for humanity when we can implore the intercession of Almighty God to seek his assistance when we ask "that we may not be led into temptation & deliver us from evil"
