Where Is Tithing Your Time

Where, in the bible, does it state that tithing can be our time, rather that money or goods? Everywhere I can think of states words like 'He gave a tenth of all he had' but I don't see anywhere that says you can work it off.

Try giving a goat or a basket of peaches. They would probably reject it.

In Hebrews 7 tells about tithing, and I think that we should,I know some of us may not have much, but God will provide for us.
We need to help the pastors that have given there lives to feeding the sheep, Praise God for them.God said do it
God bless

Well Becky, what about all of those people who don't have money but yet want to pay tithes? What do they give? I know how about their time for God, reading more, praying more. Giving up thier time for God.
---Rebecca_D on 5/23/05

Tithe to me means your money (or, in Bible times, worldly goods). Jesus loved the church and gave Himself for her. We should give our tithes to support our local church to promote the message of Christ. This means paying the light and water bills, and paying for programs to reach out to the community.
---Becky on 5/23/05

What's so difficult about the "tithe?" 1st it was not a 10th to God,but a 10th to the Levite tribe (who had no land)from the 11 other tribes. Since this system is no longer in place why the "tithe" It's simply another form of "tax" to support institutions.

A reply to tanthi: and to other's: Hear ye, He ye what is being said. We believe in paying tithes, we believe in paying a tenth of all which includes not just MONEY, BUT A TENTH OF YOUR TIME = 2.4 As for me after I ask the holy Ghost to explain God's word to me because he is the teacher I now understand he means what the word says a tenth of all!
---Watching on 5/22/05

It shouldn't have to specify. Everything you are, and own belongs to God! This takes in "everything" - time, money, family; to give back ten percent of it seems hardly adequate, as He owns it, anyway!

felt they knew everything and that spirit is still in the world today. It given a stink order as if God only speak to his children or to the world but by them only. We all know in part as the anointing of God gives it to us by the Holy Ghost. Be blessed!

worshiping God, mediating on his word is tithes in my book. We must work out our own salvation with fear and tremberling. I don't knock a person from being led by the holy Ghost in where to give their tithes and offersing (money) because God led his children in the days of old and he leads them today. When God leads you to do something do it. Jesus was lead my God and it always got him in trouble with those who

By God's grace I have learned whatever his child gives without murmuring and complainings but gives as a cheerful giver. They are giving unto him. God himself receives and honor's the gift or offering. We must know and believe this. In todays church all you hear about tithes is money. Read the word the church gave a tenth of all. God words explained how the prophets like Daniel spent time with him, how Jesus spent time with him. 2.4 hour given to God in prayer, reading the word,

My Pastor has his own construction business.
We support him but not with money. My Pastor doesn't want to be paid, he said he doesn't want our money and for our money goes to the church and to help the people in the church. So if that is how he feels, then I am not going to disagree with him. I admire him for that. I admire his thinking I should say.
---Rebecca_D on 5/17/05

Rebecca D, if your money does not go to help the pastor who does help the pastor, who pays his wages. He is part of the church that needs money isn't he? A labourer is worthy of his hire and, as a labourer for the church, he still has to eat, clothe his family and pay bills just like you and me. Any money we give in offering or tithes in my church pays for many things connected with the church, including the pastor.
---Paul_James on 5/17/05

If I feel led to give $5. or $10. then that is the Lord leading me to give that. I give on what I am led to give. My money doesn't go to support the preacher, it goes to the church, to help out the church and the people in it.

Mark 12:41-44
The Widow's two mites

Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much.

Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites ............

So Jesus call his disciples to Him and said to them
Assuredly ........ this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury
for they all put in out of their abundance but she has put in ALL SHE HAD, HER WHOLE LIVELIHOOD.

Ecclesiates 3 - God says there is a time for everything under the sun. To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven. See - season
Various Exhortations - 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22
Rejoice ALWAYS
IN EVERYTHING give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Do not quench the Spirit.

You say:" I feel that we ought we are led to give"
Comment: to go by feeling in this matter is not the way to go! We are dealing with the principle of good stewardship.
Question: Who do you want to lead you? Your Lord or your feelings? Think about it!

Thanks for your replies. The way I see it is that tithing means A or THE tenth, (not UP TO a tenth). The shepherds counted their sheep 1 - 9, number 10 was God's. Our money is the same, 9 parts for us one reserved for God. That will be a small amount from some and a large amount from others but still one tenth. Where does it say that 2.4 hours of every 24 can be worked for God INSTEAD? One tenth of our money or goods is the tithe, everything else, EVEN OUR TIME, is a freewill offering surely !!
---Xanthi on 5/16/05

Sometimes we come up ideas that are trying to encourage people to see the church as a place of service. Tithing of money and goods is in the Bible. All our money and goods, energy and time should be The Lord's. Some people can begin by using 10% of anything as a new understanding of the working in church. They view the world they work in as secular. And donating 10% of time to the actual church building works for them. God really wants to be honoured 100% of the time, wherever we are.
---barbara67 on 5/16/05

There have been alot of times I didn't have any money. I couldn't give. My church understands this as well as God. When it speaks of tithing in the bible as 10% that was referring to Jacob making a vow to God. This is how Jacob feels. I feel that we should give what we feel led to give.

Hey Pierrie, Thanks for defining the different aspects of tithing. I think I'd better get back to the drawing board. Blessings!

First let me agree with those who say that time is money BUT let me add, if you please, that all money is not TITHE.
Let me also agree that in very poor countries I have seen the tithe paid in "chickens" and "goats" etc. Sometimes we ate the tithe, sometimes we would sell the animals and use the money to support the pastor.
As for gregg, I can't quite agree that worship or the giving of ourselves is same as tithing.
God bless!

Carol 9338
It is very nice that you are willing to work fr the church without pay,but understand the difference. The money the church saves in this case is a donation and that's not tithing. Tithing is giving 10% of your imcome.
---Pierr7958 on 5/15/05

Rebecca D, the widow gave a mite and God blessed her, by filling her empty jars. If we only obeyed God according to how we "feel", we are not acting in faith but controlled by feelings which fight against faith. My experience shows me that when we have "nothing", and give in faith what little we can, like the widow, God will provide our needs. Tithing enters you into the biblical covenant of blessing and withholding from God, He also withholds because God is bound by His covenant.
---lisa on 5/15/05

Rebecca D:
Your answer seems to indicate that you have some money. Is that right? you said "the money" not "any money"
The point is if you earn/make/receive any money YOU ALSO HAVE the money, because 10% what you have is his and you ought to give it to him 1st!

I believer our time is always worth something so why would it not be worthy to God. After all he gives it to us!I spend 8 or 9 hours on Wed. cooking supper for the congregation. What is the difference if I do it freely or if they had to pay someone!Whatever we would pay a cook is the amount of my contribution.God bless Caroa9338
---CAROL on 5/15/05

There are times I am not able to pay my tithes, so I give my time for God. I don't know if it is in the bible or not, but this is how I feel. Now if I had the money and didn't pay it, then that would be a different story.
---Rebecca_D on 5/15/05

If you really want to get technical about it, ALL my time is given freely to the purpose of God, whether that be teaching the Sunday School class on Sundays or waiting in a chatroom for someone to come in and ask for help. The tithe is not what we do anyway. The tithe(firstfruits), which belongs to God, is Jesus raised from the dead. The offering, which was God's, is the Lamb slain. Get those in the storehouse (you) and the will of the Father will be done in His house.
---Linda_Smith on 5/15/05

There is one thing that we all, in the realm of the natural and at this very moment, have the same amount of and that is time. We are all given 24 hours in a day. I invest my time in ministering unto the Lord, blessing God and blessing man with the bread and wine in my hands.

Dear Xanthion: The tithe is representative of goods, dollar bills/coins and our time (since "time is money"). Tithing whatever we have up to 10% is a start and is Biblical. However, when we understand that God owns all we have as well as us, we will be the most happy and generous givers on earth with our money, goods, time, services and our lives -- all in Jesus name! Blessings!
---Elsie on 5/15/05

As you may know, the tithe was/is to be used to help pay for the Pastor/Priest's salaries, so it has to be money either directly or indirectly. By indirectly I mean that you could set aside every tenth of what you might be producing, but that tenth item would have to be sold and the funds from it's sale turnned over to the church treasurer for their intended use. So anyway you slice it, it has to be money in the end 99% of the time!( No Biblical texts for your version of tithing)
---Pierr7958 on 5/15/05

And you know they say time is money.

Romans 12:1 'Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is you spiritual act of worship.' In the Old Testament, tithing was the act of worship. The storehose contained the tithe; you ate the tithe or whatever you wanted to give was a tithe. Dt.12:17
