Can We Take The Bible Seriously

How would you explain these questions to someone who says that we really can't take the Bible literaly, and as the final word of history? I have been witnessing to some people on line, and this is some of the things that he wrote to me....These situations occur too many times to take literaly.

The Bible is probably the only thing we can take seriously.

You also said "Can we take the Bible literally?" We can take the Bible literally, but some parts are written metaphorically, and until God opens our eyes to what it truly is saying...(such as the prophetic parts)...many people are simply guessing as to what those passages are referring to.
---Anne on 4/2/09

Well, some people will not hear the truth no matter what you say or how well you explain it to them.
All I can say is that with all my extended study into the original Hebrew and Greek texts, that EVERY SINGLE WORD of the KING JAMES VERSION of GOD's HOLY WORD is TRUE BEYOND A SHADOW OF DOUBT! AND for those who do not believe or wont believe or just plain wont listen. Or find an argument for every single thing you try to point out to them then they are truly lost. DO as Christ said to do shake the dust off your sandals as you leave them. FOr it is NOT UP TO YOU AND I to CONVINCE THEM....we are to spread the GOOD MESSAGE of Christ.....not convince people to believe....

catherine: "Well, well, Steveng, good to hear from you!"

---Steveng on 4/1/09

Try giving examples of God doing something for people in modern times. The Lord can help you do things about their unbelief. Do you have the Holy Spirit? If not, call on God and ask for the Holy Spirit. Keep praying for Him until you get Him. He can help you greatly.
---Betty on 4/1/09

Well, well, Steveng, good to hear from you! Satan does not wish for anyone to know there is a hell, or that he even exists. God's word>>>Well, He has this place called hell in there. And God describes it real well! Bible classes are filled with unbelievers, who's mocking God.
---catherine on 4/1/09

catherine: "Well, well, let them die and go to hell, is all I can say. The Bible, God's word, is 100% truth. Please, always go with what you know, and keep studying as God leads you."

You wouldn't know the truth if it whacked you on the side of your head with a two by four.

Your response "let them die and go to hell" is not a christian truth. It's more of Satan's truth.

I suggest doing an online bible search for "one another," "each other," and "encourag."

As for the topic at hand:

People today are just too educated to know what to take literally and what to take as a fable especially when it comes to christianity. They blindly ask questions, probably asked by someone else, without reading the Bible itself to find if it is true or not. They are lazy as all of society wants answers now without digging for the solution themselves.

People think the bible as not literal because we cannot comprehend the language used at that time in history. People believe that Revelation is symolic because of how it's written. Could you describe events in the year 4009? The people in 4009 would think your writngs as symbolic.
---Steveng on 3/30/09

Yes the Bible is to be taken literally. The way to examine the truth of the Bible can be done in the following manner. First decide on a timeline(that is to say discover when a given event took place and/or was written about. Paying particular attention to prophecy. Now to examine the Bible correctness check out the fulfillment of that prophecy. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that prophecies separated by hundreds of years being fulfilled it proof of that prophecy being of God.

Well, well, let them die and go to hell, is all I can say. The Bible, God's word, is 100% truth. Please, always go with what you know, and keep studying as God leads you.

I'm having a problem with taking the written text of the Bible litteraly, namely because of the six day creation. I just see too much of a pattern in the numbers. like 40, everytime theres a trial 40 shows up. the number seven shows up. . . well every other page almost, and the number three shows up almost every time Jesus shows his divinity
---James_Bagiackas on 3/29/09

Barbara: Please clarify! What situations? I guess you mean prophecy of events in history, right or wrong?

I can only say that ultimately, no one can prove 100% for sure that God exists to people who simply refuse to believe in Him. We must have some faith in Him; we'll pray for your friend.
---danie9374 on 11/10/08

you best believe the Bible literal, as if your life depended on it--------because it does

The Bible is basically a book dealing with spiritual matters. Where it deals with matters of a non-spirtual nature, it has never been proven to be wrong. But, a non-christian can't except a lot of things in the Bible since they lack the proper faith. To try and convience them is of no value. It has to be the Holy Spirit. All you do is present the facts as presented in the Bible, and let God do the rest.
---Ray on 7/19/05

If one can believe God made the earth out of nothing, and Adam out of sand, how can he not create a book that we may hold in our hands, to study and learn about him? Through study of bible origins, I stand behind the KJV. In Genesis 3 Satan twisted God's word to decieve Eve. Satan is still at work twisting God's word to deceive people, and at stopping the messenger.

Barbara, First of all it is very hard to witness on-line. It's not the same as face to face. You can't convince everybody, especially on-line. You can pray about it and give scriptures, and trust God because His word never comes back void. The most important thing is, you must be in the spirit to witness effectively. I know it can be frustrating, but don't beat yourself up. Ask God to show you what to do. God bless your efforts.
---John on 6/28/05

Barbara you mention your friend asking about the 2 different accounts of creation. They do not show things being created in different order. The first shows exactly what God did on each of the 6 days in that order. The second account talks of things He had already done but goes on to tell us more about these things - how Adam named the animals etc. Look out for the word 'had' in chapter 2 (verses 8 and 19 for example). This shows that God 'had already' done certain things before creating Adam.

The simplest answer is God spoke it leaving no room for questions about it.
---Heather on 6/9/05

You ask how I would explain these questions. 2 Timothy 3:16 lays the groundwork. 2 Peter 1:20-21 tells us what we are to know first, then we can do as Jesus did. He did not try to prove truth, but spoke and revealed it. Our place is to preach the word (2 Timothy 4:2) and to tell what He has done for us (Luke 8:39).

For other examples of the idiom of permission, see Job 1 & 2, 1 Samuel 31:4-5, 1 Chronicles 10:14.
---Wayne on 6/4/05

Brother Bruce5656 has a great answer. We are given that responsibility, to give the Good News, and for the Holy Spirit to do the rest. Many times the thing that stops us is pride, and the believe that we are the one's doing the changing. The glory will always go to the Lord.
---Lupe2618 on 6/4/05

Last, Learn to hear when God is speaking to you, Find out where God is working first to join Him, and then Experience God doing through you what only God can do. It is a wonderful experience when God has opened the heart of an unbeliever and you are there to bring him or her through. Your heart jumps with joy to see someone make a commitment. All through the power of the Holy Spirit, all to the glory of God.

When we follow Jesus one day at a time, you will be right in the center of God's will for your life. Releasing the way to Him first. Read Matthew 6:33-34 pray and then claim His promise "It is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose" This way you are right in the center of His will when He wants to use you for a special assignment.
---Lupe2618 on 6/4/05

Sister Barbara, you have to remember that the unbeliever does not understand anything about Scripture. To him it is foolishness, but to the believer it is the power of God. Don't be shocked when they tell you it is not true. It happens many times. We all were like that before we had faith. I believe the problem is the way of discipling. First, Jesus said, "I am the Way" He didn't say, I will show you the way, or I will give you a road map.
---lupe2618 on 6/4/05

That is the problem with alot of people they don't take the bible seriously. they think that God's word is a joke. It a person doubts some of the bible, than chances are they doubt if God is real.
---Rebecca_D on 6/3/05

Barbara, regarding 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12, many people don't understand that the Bible is an Eastern book and we cannot understand some of it without understanding Eastern culture and Eastern idioms.

The Idiom of Permission, for example, is not in Western culture at all. When God is said to cause something which He only allows, that's the Idiom of Permission. You can read about it in "Figures of Speech Used in the Bible" by E. W. Bullinger and also on the internet.

Our assignment as Christians is to tell others of the Good News of Jesus Christ. We have not been given the responsibility for convincing anyone of anything. That is the role of the Holy Spirit.

If you want to enter into that type of discussion with unbelievers, keep in mind I Cor 2:14.

You will find resources on the net if you search for "Christian Apologetics."
---Bruce5656 on 6/2/05

We all better take the Bible seriously, it's the only thing that will last forever. When you witness and quote scripture, have confidence that God will not let His Word come back void. If we believe it or not, we are all responsible to the Word. Heaven and earth will pass away but God's Word will endure forever! Go in the power of God's Word.
---Saint_of_Christ on 6/2/05

Dear Barbara,
If you start doubting some parts of the Bible, you are entering a very dangerous way. If you don't take all words seriously, where will it end? In my youth I was thinking like you are doing now. Now I'm 69, I discovered, every word is tru. If you accept God in your life, you will have to accept the words he speaks to you by his word. Make your prayers to a dialog! It's a growing process! Don't take away the possibility for God to speak to you!
---Ernst9433 on 6/2/05

Thank you all for your replies to this post. your comments were very helpful, In witnessing to the unbelievers, and it made perfectly good, sound sense for those who are willing to recieve. I know not everyone will, but like someone said,it is their decision. Again, Thank you all, sisters, and brothers.

I am, amongst other things, a historian and archaeologist, specifically of the 18th dynasty of Egypt and pyramind age.
2 historical facts unknown at the time of AV:
1/ Pharoah is the correct Egyptian title for the King, like saying the White House spoke. Derived from "pr" or Great House.
2/ Potifar is a legitimate Egyptian name, though more likely to have been ptahifar.
When Bible translated, no one had read hieroglyphics for nearely 1300 years.

4 major proofs:
1-present day miracles, like medical healings that are scientifically unexplainable are physical proofs of God's existence.

2-every prophecy has come to pass so far: 3,268 verses of fulfilled prophecies.

3-archaeological digs and artifacts proove historical accuracy of names and places recorded in the Bible.

4-principles of science recorded in the Bible long before they were confirmed experimentally: earth being round; life in the blood; the earth's gravity; etc.

To some unbelievers, they do not want answers, they are lookig for an excuse, not a reason to create doubt in your mind about your faith. The answers are in the Bible if we search for them but the devil only wants to create doubt and disbelief. He works thru our acquaintenances. The Bible is real.
God is so good as He reveals His ways to us.

Since I was scientifically trained, believe me it wasn't easy to take the Bible literally. Then a wonderful spiritual teacher came into my life. He patiently showed me that we can trust the Bible when we obey what it says and WATCH GOD WORK! It is a journey like none other!

Continued: Henrietta Mears (whose works are published by Gospel Light) once said, "Sometimes the Bible is not God's words, but God's record of man's words."

Some scholars (Ramsses II in TEN COMMANDMENTS) say that a caract of the Nile spewed red mud (or algae), polluting it, killing fish, driving frogs out, who died, causing bug to feed on their bodies, spreading diseases.

Maybe this is a perfectly correct natural explanation--but Exodus sees something greaater behind these plagues.

I don't want to get hung up on the word 'lierally' but I believe that it is the best book to guide through life, because:
all of it is inspired by God
it gives us hope
makes us wise unto salvation
reveals Jesus as our Saviour
it is TRUTH
---Pierr7958 on 6/1/05

You have no questions here--not always do cut-and-pasted texts come through. So I can't tell what "some of the things he wrote" are.

Keep in mind: the Bible is not intended to be history as we mean it today--the objective enumeration of names, dates, places, and facts (in fact, you diminish the Bible when you treat it like that)--but a spiritual interpretation of the experience of a particular people: the story behind the story, as it were.

I think I would leave it to the Holy Spirit to convict the person of any Biblical truth. Once explained it does become their option. Alot of Bible is actual history - how much more literally should we take it?
Some is prophecy - that's things of the future. It will all come to pass somehow under the Lord's direction. All the past has - that's why its history!!!

God decieves the wicked(to be able to condemm them) (note; Every word of God cannot prove true,if God decieves anyone at all; the Bible cannot be trusted if the scribes falsify the word. The first reference is mutually exclusive with the other three, thus, the Bible cannot
