Can We Worship Other Gods

Question: when God says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me", does that mean we can worship lesser gods, as long as none of them comes first above God Jehovah? Just for discussion purposes.

God never will approve of worshiping other gods, period....The first of the Ten Commandments====God's right to exclusive Allegiance. The first four Ten Commandments are our responsibility to God. The last six are our responsibility to others.....However, the Ten Commandments are a covenant commitment first to God, and then to others. This is the essence of "love" as understood in both the OT and NT....God did not reveal the law to the Israelites in Egypt and then tell them that as soon as they measured up to this standard He would rescue them. On the contrary, by grace alone, through faith they crossed the red sea. to freedom. [never intended as the way of salvation but as the appropriate response to salvation already received.

You can't have No other god's before me.
Even the Man-mades that came from here 2nd Cor.11 v's 14 - 15. This includes missing Church, your money, your family, job, sports, play things, tv, movies, club dancing, social alcoh-drinks, friends, smokes, social clubs like the lions - moose, elks, theme parks etc. These things are god's to you when you do more for these than you do for The Almighty Living God.
1st.John 2 v's 15 - 16.

What part of Thou shall have NO OTHER gods before me do you not get? This does NOT mean that you can worship other gods as long as you put God first. Israel did this, and put a curse on itself, by worshiping God and other gods.

The greatest of the French Cathedrals, and even the lowliest chapels (ancient ones) were built by the Knights Templar. Same as some in Scotland. They were to honor the Black Madonna. Pope John Paul 2 and St Ignatius were well known to honor her too.

Any other god or goddess is of Satan.

Like almost every word in the English language, 'before' has more than one, maybe many applications. I believe that 'before' refers to the meaning 'in front of' or 'in my sight'. I too was deceived by my teachers into believing the other meaning....that as long as God is first, bowing to or praying to Mary is okay. It is not okay.

And the Lord said to Moses, "Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said,"These are yout gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.">>>We had better be careful on our journey, not to give credit to no other god except the one true, living, God.

Please you must understand the Ten Commandments. Really you don't have to study them that much, do you? NO gods shall we worship. There is only one true God. He alone we shall worship. No bowing, obeying other gods.++

No, you can't worship any other god, but God Himself. Its in the Ten commandments that you shouldn't have any idols or worship any gods.
---ANN on 7/17/07

No. Remember when ever you refer to our almighty father it is God. Any other supernatural being is a demon and should be spelled god with a lowercase g.
---Marcia on 7/17/07

No. The Bible also says God is the one true God (thus the capital G), and the only way to Heaven is through Him. A person can't believe in His complete sovereignity and worship other gods at the same time.
---Heather on 7/17/07

this means don't put anything before God. God comes first in all, not second.

When I first read this I thought, of course not! Then gave it a little bit of thought after reading some of the posted replies. And admit I do.

Anything you put before God is an idol and should not be worshipped. Lesser is not better, it still is taking the place of our savior. If you use drugs, sex, alcohol, other people, movies, anything before your relationship with God, it is wrong.

Alot of people post good replies, but without Bibles verses to back them up, so here's some: Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me. Hebrews 6:13 13 No one is greater than God. (James 2: 19) (1 Timothy 2:5). You need to read and study, Bible guides are wonderful and help much.

We must learn to live our life from God's perspective. Our worship should be exclusive to God.

Worship - seems to mean adoration. Admiration, honour, respect because of God's character

But more than one sermon thinks that societyfamilies/individuals and even congregations have a lot of other things on their minds.

There is only ONE GOD. Some people worship the things that they have. God wants us to worship HIM. Do not put the things of life in the place of GOD. Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy means worship HIM. Pray without ceasing. Talk to HIM. That is how we get to know HIM>

There is only one true God. The instruction was given when there were other perceived gods, and neighbouring tribes worshipped other gods.

Many people now make their own gods ... their job, their sports, their car ... things which they put ahead of God.

So although we know there is only one spiritual God, we ha still to beware that we do not make other things more important to us than Him

Thou shalt have NO other God before me. 'No' means none at all and 'before' means except. Old English is sometimes confusing. Jesus said 'suffer' little children to come to me. Suffer means allow but we use that word in a totally different way these days. When unsure about the meaning of a word it's a good idea to look up the same verse in a more modern translation. That usually clears up the confusion. Continue to enjoy your bible study Ann.

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me" means NO OTHER GOD'S
If you worship other God's you are not giving your all to the ONE, true God.
How could one worship more than one God anyway? Is worshioping God not giving your heart, soul and mind to God? What is left to worship others? God is God period. There isd no others none lesser or higher. Only ONE God who made heaven and earth and all within it.

Dear Ann: This commandment means exactly what it says. Those "other gods" can be money, people, work, sports, leisure activities, eating, alcohol, drugs, etc. etc. Not just carved statues. God wants all of us, not a part of us. We belong to Him; He created us before we were in our mother's womb. Blessings!!

No, We shouldn't worship any thing or anyone, but the one and only true God Jehovah. For it is He alone that deserves, all praise, glory, and hornor, and worship in spirit, and in truth, at all times. From the rising of the sun, until the going down of the same, Our God is worthy of praise, with thanksgiving. There is no God besides Him.
