When Does A Boy Become A Man

When does a boy become a man? At what age does a man have authority over the woman who, yesterday, had authority over him. Apologies, I posted this as an answer to a question yesterday when it was meant to be a new question.

A boy becomes a man when he is old enough to enter into his second childhood!
---Elder on 9/6/11

hi,thankfull be here.In many homes like mine,my brother had to become the man..he step into action! he had to be our protection, work & help my mother... he did pretty good at it too.My brother was quite astute for his age,he rescued me from an abusive boyfriend my mom had..So yes! he became a man real quick! Thank God! He was probably about 14 yrs. Old. He looked alot older. There are some boys who have the mind of a man.God bless all.

A son never has authority over his mother. Scripture says to honor your father and mother, how is it honoring your mother if you practice authority over her? A son who does so is in sin. Also John gave a great answer about the Jewish declaration of when a boy becomes a man. But it also depends on what culture you are referring to.
---willa5568 on 8/20/11

Wow! Brothers and sisters you really need to bite your tongues and refrain from responding unless you are confident that you are giving a response that is acceptable to God. The majority of the responses given here expose the severe level of spiritual immaturity in the Church today. You must first study the word of God [not just read it] to show yourself approved unto God, a workman rightly dividing the word of truth.

"When does a boy become a man?"
When he puts away childish things. 1Cor 13:11
The only authority any man has over any woman is the authority the woman grants him as her husband and/or head of their household.
---josef on 5/8/11

No shame cos it was underwritten through the blood of Jesus Christ, an education becasue he needs one,(Biblical) train up a child.... first origin of education... A home well thats a no brainer and if you look at what I am really saying is what all parents who want sucess for their children help to build and encourage their children to at least start on the right foot to become a better person, Christ is the first Gain, all else comes through obedience first to God and then hismelf, his wife and family..... anything else. I have two grown lads to prove God is faithful to his words

When he knows how to treat a woman and other people.

A man isn't a man until he knows Jesus. I'm convinced of it.

My ex-husband was a man in age but a little wounded boy inside his being. Thus the beatings and he eventually got arrested for Domestic Violence.

WHen a man knows how to treat a woman, his children and love like Christ loves the church, then he becomes a man.

Rhonda-- What was the point I missed? The fair thing would be to tell me, instead of just LOL.
---Donna66 on 4/18/11

But they know better than most people, that being 18 doesn't mean mature. Bringing young men to maturity, apart from their families of origin, is an important mission for them, after military objectives.

LOL Donna knows best and again MISSED the point

carry on....
---Rhonda on 4/16/11

Okay, that doesn't answer the question but thank you.
---Mary on 4/16/11

As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak inthe church. 1 Corinthians chapter 14:Also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion. Let a woman learn in silence with all submissiveness. I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men, she is to keep silent 1 Timothy chapter 2:

The U.S. military considers that 18yr. olds ARE men...with or without college, with or without wives.

But they know better than most people, that being 18 doesn't mean mature. Bringing young men to maturity, apart from their families of origin, is an important mission for them, after military objectives.

attended University?

LOL I have several brothers, brothers-in-law and a husband who didn't go to or finish "university" yet served the military ...they have homes, many cars, own many businesses between them, have many children and I guess as great servants of the community through providing jobs and themselves in volunteer work they are shameful and disgraceful in your pious eyes?

Having children is STILL a blessing and NOT ONE verse claims any man or women will EVER be perfect in this life - not one except Christ

legally in USA a boy becomes a man at 18, some become one sooner others are physically men and will always remain boys emotionally
---Rhonda on 4/16/11

Wow Carla, if what you posted 'Graduated from University, holds down a decent paying job, can look after his home, himself and has a car, no children, no responsibilites , so shames and no disgraces' is what it takes to be considered a man - I don't know 1 man who has no shames or disgraces in their lives. Not all boys attend college either.

\\When he has accepted Christ as his personal saviour,\\

Carla, where does the Bible use the terms "accept Christ" or "personal savior"?

Can you provide book, chapter, and verse, please?
---Cluny on 4/15/11

When he has accepted Christ as his personal saviour, washed in the blood of the lamb, sanctified, justified by his love for Christ, family and his father calls him responsible and blessed. Graduated from University, holds down a decent paying job, can look after his home, himself and has a car, no children, no responsibilites , so shames and no disgraces.

When a male turns 18, his mother ceases to have any authority over him. But a man never has "authority" over his own mother unless she grants him some type of legal power of attorney. If he has been a good son and has gained in knowledge and experience, his mother may appreciate his advice. But she is not under any obligation to do as he requests.

i really like reading these but my statement is if you comment these things you should give bible verse to back up your opinion~
---marie on 4/5/11

Never does a man have authority over his mother at any age.Bible tells Christians to submit to one another, male and female, all men don't have authority over all women.Genesis3:16 gave a husband rule over his wife, not every male over every female.Submission is between married couples not men and women in general. We all must obey those leaders who have the rule over us.For women to ursurp authority over men, they first must have authority over women, only husbands and rulers have any authority over women.

wrong thinkig. a man and a woman are totally equal and a man has never authority over a woman if he is not her boss at work her pastor in the church, but women can also be boss and pastors too so it depends who is in charge of who. but generally it is wrong thinking that a man has an authority over a woman. not biblical. women can bishops pastors prophets etc...

A boy becomes a man when he takes on the responsibilites of a man. Getting up for work (without the help of mom), paying bills on time (without being told), most importantly but not in any order is when he learns to love and respect those who have rasied him, leads his family in a family altar time of devotion to God. A true man will not dictate or rule a woman. He will not be afraid to do what he asks others to do. He will also be able to take direction from others.

when a boy lives home and has a home & responsibilities of his own.... that makes him a man.

Since when does a man have authority over a woman when they both are equally yoked? When a man does that, it means he is abusive both physically and emotionally. A boy becomes a man when he takes respons. for his actions and treats a woman like a lady and follows God.
---Jeannine on 6/21/05

No, women should not teach young adult men and he is old enough to be in an adult class. You have to draw the line somewhere, and in our society at 18 years old, we are old enough to vote, be drafted (if a man), you don't get juvenile status (usually) if you commit a crime, you have to be 18 to work in factories and some other places , you don't need parental consent to do or go curtain places. Except if he is mentally slow, he might not be unable to understand an adult class.

Thanks for clarifying, Paulette. Your initial posting said one thing quite different from your subsequent one explaining things.
---Jack on 6/15/05

As my son was growing up, I gave him freedom to make more his own decissions gradually and have more responsibilities gradually. When he went away to college, he was prepared. Maybe it is time the man leave the nest, if he is graduated from high school. The mother did her job raising him. Part of that job was preparing him to take care of himself and maybe a family of his own someday. One very important job of a parent is teach our children about Jesus.
---Ulrika on 6/14/05

, boys become men when they follow God in the way they live their lives, the same is true for females. apart from God, we are just slaves to our own pride and greed.
---steve on 6/14/05

A boy never reaches the age where he has authority or rule over anyone. A mature man knows and walks in knowing that he and all believers are mutually submitted to God. No one rules and that word in some responses bothers me. I have had pastors or teachers younger than me and I gave them honor for the office but they all seemed to esteeem me as older than they. " Younger women as sisters older women as mothers." Fathers in homes may be the ones violating women by not passing on that truth.

A boy begins becoming a man when he starts responding sensibly (taking responsibility for his actions). Charity = Love: 1 Cor. 13:1-11; 1 Jn. 4:7-8.

A man of God has a servant's spirit, lives for the good of others, isn't puffed up (doesn't seek to be lord over others). He leads by example -- isn't a prodder (bully).

Paulette: I believe the teaching at your church about 18 year old boys is unbiblical. Pray &, as the Lord leads, talk with your pastor in a spirit of meekness & humility.
---Leon on 6/14/05

18 year olds, barely have control over their own faculties. I sincerely doubt God would want them being in any position of authority. Remind your friend that women are used int the Bible just like men the Elder Lady of First Peter, Debra or Priscilla or Mary Mother of Jesus...women were in essence the first to preach the resurrection. Besides if God can use a donkey I'm sure He has no reservations about using a woman.
---Auror3743 on 6/14/05

I wasn't thinking so much of mother/son really but your responses on this line are helpful. Reason for question, a friend has been upset by things said by elders in her church. She taught Sunday School and is now told that boys she taught some time ago are in authority over her because they have reached the age of 18. The contact between them has never been broken and she is hurt by this suggestion. This sounds more like the attitude of some muslims to their women than of Christians.
---Paulette on 6/14/05

Man never gets authority over Mom. The Bible doesn't say that when you get to a certain age that we are allowed to rule over them. I will always be my parents' daughter. I am always required to respect, love & listen to what they say,& make my own choice. Besides man is the head of the household but it's much like Jesus and God. Jesus submitted to the Father's authority but He is equal to Him. Men and women get so mixed up on what that means. Just love each other and put God in authority of your lives.

It depends on what you mean by "son authority over the mother."

If she's living in HIS house, and he's responsible for her support, then she follows HIS rules, because HE is the head of the house-but she still remains his mother and is worthy of respect. That doesn't mean she calls the shots for an adult son (or daughter) however.
---Jack on 6/14/05

Dear Paulette: A boy becomes a man when he earns the privilege by loving actions, belief and submission to the authority of God, and respect for himself and women. Even tho' in some cultures, manhood is a rite of passage, it really lies in the heart of the person and his relation to God that earns him the position of man. There are grown men who remain boys for life because they never accept the responsibility of manhood.
---Elsie on 6/14/05

If you are talking about a son becoming a man and having authority over his mother, the answer is NEVER. Respect for one's parents never ends. The only way a child should have any "authority" over a parent is if he is responsible for them as an aged individual, unable to make their own decisions and he is working things out in their best interest. Demensia, altzimers etc.
