I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the posts with one abbreviation after the other difficult to decipher. Is it just me?
---DoryLory on 5/8/07|
Kathy,it is big of you to apologize, and I want to say thank you.Honestly I was more puzzeled by what was going on with you.I wasn't really ofended.Whatever people said on here was the conviction of their hearts, and I always advocate deplomacy when presenting a contrasting opinion.I checked and don't think too many erred from that.I just wish we all could state opinions without getting hyper about it,don't you?1John4:7 Beloved let us love oneanother--.. God Bless

this reminds me of vanity license plates on cars. Does anybody have a vanity plate on their car?
---sue on 6/20/05|
My apologies to all, my initial response was to defend barb's idea, sorry for being so ofensive. But there were some very angry sounding responses before I ever entered the picture if you'll go back and read them. But I am guilty of the greater offense by far - so sorry all.
---kathy3339 on 6/19/05|
Kathy, your reason for harshness escapes me,"holier than thou",doesn't have any application in this post, there is nothing holy here to begin with. Also it isn't Bible, but about a secular topic.I admire you wanting to keep up with the children. It does affect everyone coming to this site expecting to learn ,give or get help. They must be able to understand what's said. All against it, didn't want it spreading throughout the Blogs making them gibberish to all who don't know the slang.

No, I do not think God disapproves of the shortforms. I am sure though that he would disapprove of the fact that language is being used here which many of us do not understand.
Go on using,if you are prepared to translate later
---Alan_of_U.K. on 6/19/05|
Kathy you say 'if these abbreviations disturb you then don't use them.' That's fine to say but the only way we can comply is to ignor all the entries that contain excessive short forms, which then cuts us out of the discussion. We all use some - the long accepted (e.g.) 'For Example' and (etc.) 'ETCETERA'. In fact some cannot even get abbreviations correct and put ect. instead of etc. Let's stick to basic, good, English whenever possible and we'll all understand each other better.
---F.F. on 6/19/05|
if these abbreviations disturb you then don't use them. I personally feel the need to understand them. I dont like being left out in the dark about abreviation or slang. I always want to know what my kids are up to. So if it doesn't affect your life forget about it. Just let those of us who it does matter to know without getting so "holier that thou". I dont actually use it either except for a couple of common friendly terms, but if it offends a brother dont do it? whew it's heated in here.
---kathy3339 on 6/18/05|
It has nothing to do with God approving, or dissaproving.. it's just that it takes out the feeling of meaning and some people just can't get it and just don't feel like using it or learning it. I for one.. don't care, I prefer english regular form. But those of you who chose this way.. More power to you.
---vivi on 6/18/05|
I liked that 1 Sue thanx. My fave is L8R. This is fun guys, I don't think God disapproves of that.

Consider a deaf person who only hears every other word how confusing it is for them to try to understand what is really being said.It is the same type of problem for those who don't already know the computer slang. When you can only pick out a word every now and then it becomes nerve wracking, certainly not fun, when left out of the conversation.People weren't being crabby letting their opinion be known. Most don't like confusion, and you can't participate in something you don't "get".
---Darlene_1 on 6/17/05|
You think Jesus would have liked it if Matthew, Mark, luke, and so on taken his deep powerful words and shortformed them ? Or God with anyone writting from him in the whole bible, shortform? I think not. I think everyone would have gotten confused and even less saved.
---vilmavivi_ on 6/17/05|
There is no comparison with kids sending abbreviated text messages to each other and serious adult Christians contributing to a website such as ChristiaNet. We misunderstand each other often enough without causing confusion, that can easily be avoided by writing our thoughts correctly, and if that's what someone calls being crabby then you have my persmission to call me crabby.
---Paulette on 6/17/05|
Kathy I've never before been described as crabby or should that be 'Kth iv nvr bfr bn dscbd az cby'?
---Xanthi on 6/17/05|
I guess it is very plain and clear to see that to economize on space we have to sacrifice something. And not everyone is willing to sacrifice that something which is "the beauty of the English Language!" I am not a native English speaker but I feel pain every time I see how the language is "butchered" for the sake of economy.
---linda6546 on 6/17/05|
I thought this was going to be a fun thing to do, I was surprised to see the negitive stuff, I had fun with it. as fast as chat rooms go at times it would be nice to keep up in them.

Zanthi & Debbie ... I am now sure I was wrong about the way we are limited. I wrote out an answer containing over a hundred of Barbara's sugggested abbreviations, and submitted it ... expecting it to be rejected as having too many words.
But it was accepted! It must be a mixture of words and characters. (Perhaps Moderator could explain?)
But in any case, I find abbrevaitions very difficult to read, and hope the idea does not get taken up.
---Alan_of_U.K. on 6/16/05|
thanks barb, my kids know some of these and i feel i should too, the rest of you are a bit crabby.
---kathy3339 on 6/16/05|
I know one! IMHO means: in my humble opinion.
---sue on 6/16/05|
On the one hand it's nice to know WHAT these abbreviations are when someone DOES use them, but I wish people wouldn't. One sad thing I notice is that many people from other countries who write to me, who speak a different native language, will use these abbreviations...I suppose because they see them all the time when they are on the internet and think that is how we really write. English is confusing enough without including a whole new set of words and symbols!
---Tanya on 6/16/05|
Eye shore hope this 1 don't catch on.
We would need a dictonary to understand.
It is hard enough trying to figer misspelled words much less to try to understand if U R 1 2. ru? Do I mis /stand or just 4 get?
Not for me, buddies.
---Elder on 6/16/05|
Why? We are word-limited - not character-limited.
---Jerry on 6/16/05|
Are you sure about that? I only ask because sometimes if I change the word "and" to "&" -- my response IS shortened. I also have taken out spaces after a period and that seems to work too. I know I have gotten the message that I have too many words at 85.443393 and all I need to do is take out a few spaces and change a few "ands" for it to be shortened enough to fit.

Sorry folks but I won't be joining this nonsense. I like to look literate and want others to fully understand me. Alan, I think we are actually limited by characters not words. I've found that if I am very slightly over the 85 I can solve it by simply taking out the space between a full stop and the start of the next sentence or by changing one word for a shorter one with a similar meaning.

It has taken me 66 years to learn,I am still learning, how to use English correctly. This old stick-in-the-mud will stick to what she knows. Why bother with computer slang when it isn't needed on here. That was developed to save time in game rooms, chat rooms.Maybe it's fun for some of you, for me it's a pain in the neck.Words are beautiful masterpieces of expression and should be enjoyed, not discarded.I hope slang is limited to this room, and doesn't become a habit with too many outside of this post.

I do not like it. I'm sorry to offend anyone, but I think it's stupid. The world is confusing enough. I prefer to use plain English.
---Anthony on 6/16/05|
Why do this.
We are limited by the number of words, not their length.
Your suggestions Barbara will not save any word numbers, and will make the blogs much harder to read.
