Jack B, I know that anyone who drinks would surely give a reason why they justify drinking. I don't expect for anyone that drinks to say, I should not drink, it is sinful. Of course anything can be bad. I did not say to drink is sin, just because I don't. I think that there are exceptions when not to drink. When it becomes a stumbling block for someone who is trying never to drink, in front of lcoholics who have quit, examples to unbelievers who see us. Example to our kids. Many reasons why not to drink. But if you do, do it where no one will be hurt by it. It's up to the individual to decide that. Haven't you ever seen smokers hiding so the other brothers and sisters don't see them? It's a conviction they get. Just about anything can be a drug.
---Mark_V. on 7/20/10

strongax, I mean exactly what I wrote. I command language, language does not command me.
---Eloy on 7/20/10

Alan, to each his own. Some people drink alcohol, and some people do not alcohol. I do not judge people who drink, but I judge drunkards. For some people, even one drink is too many and therefore they should abstain, but for others one drink is acceptable as long as they are not harming anyone nor are driving nor are doing anything which may place themself or someone else in danger.
---Eloy on 7/20/10

There are no thirteen(13) commandments......we should be careful saying things we know are not true. I know Christians who smoke, drink and dance, Pastors and wives who dance. They dance at weddings and so forth. If I want to dance. I can dance within bounds and regions. I may not go out to a club etc.. I can dance inside of my home. It is great exercise, too! We should be careful of telling others what they can and cannot do. What is wrong for you,may be right for me.
---Robyn on 7/20/10

Nope, I don't drink alcohol of any kind..Coffee is my drink. Might drink ice tea with a meal at times.
---a_friend on 7/20/10

You said: I rule language, language does not rule me.

Perhaps it would be better to say Language serves me, I do not serve language.

The way you phrased it, it sounds like you are the arbiter over language for everyone.
---StrongAxe on 7/19/10

Alan, as you know from my prior portings, I do not advocate the consumption of alcohol, and if a person chooses to indulge in alcohol then they should do so reponsibly. For the end of the issue is plain, scripture reveals, drunkenness is sin, and no drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God.
---Eloy on 7/19/10

I drink just enough so that people do not mistake me for a Mormon or a Baptist.

Both generally stay out of bars and do their drinking at home.
---leej on 7/19/10

No. There are times that I may not drink for several months. However, a hurricane passed by here recently, and so for the next week or two, I'll drink a little with any meal containing meat due to the risk of bacterial contamination. God is not offended by one's drinking moderately.
Francis, 7/14: It depends, most of the first items on your list have an alcohol content similar to beer - 3-10%. Tepache is about 1%. The wines listed run from 8-20%. Fortified wines can have 22%. Sangria if it is made with wine and carbonated water has less alcohol, and if fortified with liquor has more. Most Liquors are 20-60%. Although, a few have up to 90%. A neutral grain spirit has 95% alcohol. Many of these liquors are not often drunk undiluted.
---Glenn on 7/19/10

Eloy ... You make your grammatical point, that we should not be ruled by it!

On the question of alcohol ... you are quite right that there much more better nutritious drinks than that. Or maybe there are not.

Carrot juice is very good for you indeed .... one of the bestest health drinks there is ... but a notable health guide here died from too much carrot juice.

Jesus referred Himself as being the water of life ... but too much water can kill. And He approved of salt ... too much can kill.

All these things in moderation are OK ... but in excess they can be bad. Fermentation is a natural God-given process ... and I think that in moderation He is happy that we enjoy it's result
---alan8566_of_uk on 7/19/10

cluny, I rule language, language does not rule me. Now currently at this time there are much more greater best nutriental nutritious preferred aqueous fluids to imbibe, than alcohol.

That goes for any kind of drug -MarkV

I wonder if this also goes for caffeine since physicians now claim that the long term effects of caffeine intake can alter the natural distribution of chemicals of the brain leading to such things as Manic Depression and other anxiety disorders.

I wonder how many people are sinning by drinking, coffee, coke and tea I wonder. The truth is a double-edged sword.

See how things can be taken too far without thinking. The very air we breathe has contaminants. Every bit of food we eat has poisons that our bodies expel in urine and stool.

Maybe its possible certain things arent mentioned in great detail in the Bible because God expects us to use a little common sense.

\\why drink alcohol when there are other more healthier drinks to drink?

Double comparatives such as "more healthier" would get you marked off in English when I was in school, Eloy.

Writing clearly means thinking clearly.

---Eloy on 7/17/10

Because in moderation (1 drink a day) it is good for the heart and arteries.

That can not be said for pop or fruit juice filled with high fat corn syrup and sugars.

I suppose water or juice made at home from a juicer would be good though to support your point.

But, why not bash pop? I know people who drank 6 cans of Coke a day and got bloated. Why is that not said to be worse than drinking just one glass of alcohol a day by most Christians?

Yea let me not do that!
Yes, that will defile my body!

Right! Never mind all the other stuff, I do.
Just let me stop drinking and smoking, that will do it!

For sure Ill be righteous then!
Ill just go before him and said
Hey, buddy! I didnt drink or smoke!
Like all of them. So, why am I in hell?

I can just hear him now, didnt I said
If ye were blind, ye should have no sin.
But now ye say, we see.
Therefore your sin remaineth.

You dont understand this!
Even Adam and Eve try to cover themselves, too!
It didnt work then. I dont think it will work now.
Do you really not understand this?
Whats that in your eye?
---TheSeg on 7/17/10

Since you are obviously asking about alcoholic "drinks," my answer would be I have not had an alcoholic drink since July 4th, 1992. Even though I had been a drunk/alcoholic for 20 years, God took the desire away from me at that time, and I have not had any problems with wanting it again since then by the grace of God. The pastor of the church I attend says it like this, " I can drink ALL I want to, I just don't want to." Amen
---tommy3007 on 7/17/10

The famous Christian theologian C. S. Lewis was once asked if Christians who smoked would go to heaven, and he replied "Yes, and they'll probably get there a lot faster than the rest of us!"
---StrongAxe on 7/16/10

When asked about giving money to homeless people who MIGHT spend it on alcohol, C.S. Lewis also was said to have said: "If I don't give it to him, I will spend it on alcohol for myself."

I guess the bible I have somehow censored those unpopular Thirteen Commandments:

11. Thou Shalt Not Smoke
12. Thou Shalt Not Drink
13. Thou Shalt Not Dance

---Eloy on 7/14/10

Aka, very good points. When you mentioned spiritual, I was thinking just that. When a person drinks, even one beer, it has an effect on the brain, our spiritual alertness is not as sharp. And the more one drinks, the less we walk in the Spirit. Very good points. That goes for any kind of drug. Since food is not a drug, it too can be sinful if we abuse the body. I'm overweight some, so I need to pay more attention to what I eat.

No one knows exactly how much drink will make him drunk.
We THINK we can handle one or two, but we all know better ---francis on 7/14/10

francis is right. 'getting drunk' does not only depend on the amount. It depends on other variables like hormone and blood sugar levels just to name a few. If you want to test...drink a beer on a full try one on an empty stomach.

That has not even taken your emotional and spiritual condition into consideration.

The question is not how many drinks can you handle. The question is, at any given moment, how many drinks can handle you?
---aka.joseph on 7/14/10

I am not a drinker, but I agree with what Micha said and the passages he has given. We should be very aware not to bring disgrace to the Lord in anyway. If you drink a beer drink it in the privacy of your home. Make sure the family knows that it is only for refreshment not to get drunk, so that they can understand when they grow up the meaning of what you are doing. If you are in public drinking you give a bad witness to others, who might have been alcoholics that are now not drinking, or for unbelievers who see you and they do not even drink.
Do not cause others to sin because of what you do. If your conscious tells you it is sin, then don't do it. We need to follow our conscious because the Spirit speaks to our conscious.
---Mark_V. on 7/14/10

About a month ago I started to drink a beer most everyday. I don't get drunk. I never liked beer before. I would not recommend drinking to anyone. This is something one has to know for themselves. Alcohol can be very dangerous and evil if allowed to get out of control.
---Robyn on 7/14/10

I take just one beer or 1/2 of glass a day with a meal for my heart and arteries health. (Lowers cholesterol).

I have never wanted more than that, and I have never even once in my life been drunk.

I also don't drink in front of people who might be offended or caused to stumble.

There is one guy at church who is in AA who is ok with being out to dinner with fellow believers who drink one glass of wine. He is not tempted or offended and drinks coke or iced tea.

If looking at a woman with lust makes you and adulterer, would not drinking alcohol make you a drunk?

I am a tee-totaler however I do not condemn those who drink,I do however condemn those who get drunk. Concerning this lets remember that Jesus made wine at the wedding.

A work here about Lawrence's answer. If you will read his answer you will see he believes that his salvation depends upon his behavior. In other words he has to be good enough to be accepted. This belief completely does away with the way God accepts us. God accepts us through his son. We are made acceptable through the beloved. And who is the beloved? The Lord Jesus Christ!!!

Wine didn't go through the same fermenting process? And Santa Claus is real, right! That's an old baptist fantasy so people wouldn't drink. If drinking is a problem for you, than you should NOT drink and it is a sin. If it is not a problem for you, than you can drink in moderation. Just don't drink in the presence of an alcoholic because you can make them stumble. Read your Bible. That's the way I see it but of course some will try and make it complicated.

Not a lot. I actually had a Beam and coke with dinner tonight, but thats the first one all month. I do believe, however, that wine is a true gift of God.
---NurseRobert on 8/26/05

Rebbecca, You made a statement, "He who angers you, controls you". FALSE! What about Jesus, who was very angry with the money changers. I believe Timothy has rightous anger because I had a similar situation happen with a SELFrightous Pastor. There are a lot of God's people who are being intimidated, brow beat and condemed by leaders in our churches and that is very WRONG! I'm not just making this up. It is happening in a lot of churches. God is good, but man is determined that He isn't.
---Sally on 8/26/05

Our bodies are the temple of the well do we want to keep our bodies? If we research wine didnt go through the same fermenting it does today, wine then was similar to grape juice so be careful when comparing it to the Bible. Also, why the term "spirits" when speaking of alcohol, because it alters you , even the smallest amounts, whether you realize it or not your perceptions and decision-making abilities have been altered. there are a few versus here is one Luke 7:33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.' 34The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." '
This doesn't mean go and get drunk because that is a sin. The bible even says a little win is good for stomach ailments.
---JudithV on 8/25/05

How truely sad this is. Did not Christ turn water into wine? John 2:9, John 4:46. Christ came, suffered and died to free us from the law, Rom 8:2. Here we argue over drinking and condemning those who drink. Paul, in giving the quailifications of a deacon and bishop talks about the consumption of wine. 1 Tim 3:3&8, Titus 2:3. A deacon, not MUCH wine, and a bishop no wine. God is the final authority!

Pastor Danny. It is so wrong for you to say that drinking is a sin. I dare you to prove it by the Word of God! It's people in the body of Christ like you who cause condemnation. I am really angry because comments like yours scatter the sheep. What's in your life that is eating at you to condem others. If you gave me that garbage in church I would stand up and openly refute you. What is worse to drink moderately or to imagine evil about others?
