You don't have to be possessed to be controlled. You only have to believe a lie.
---Princesstina on 4/21/08

Please read again, what francesoo8 has to say about this subject. This statement in that answer is very explanatory"Jesus said to the disciples 'If you who are evil know how to give good things to your chidren, how much more does God know how to give good things to his children."
---Mima on 4/20/08

I would love to believe that no true Christian can have demons in them but that is blatantly going against the Bible and the evidence before our eyes. Christians sin all the time, we cannot help it. Jesus called Peter, Satan. Jesus said to the disciples 'If you who are evil know how to give good things to your chidren, how much more does God know how to give good things to his children.'
The old Testament says man's righteous deeds are dirty rags to the Heavenly Father.
---frances008 on 4/19/08

There is no way that a true Christian, God living in them Christian, can also have demons or the devil in them. It is IMPOSSIBLE.
---catherine on 4/19/08

God tells us, "There is a great gulf FIXED between us, so that those who want to pass from Paradise to us cannot. Nor can those from there in Hades pass to us."

You cannot have it both ways.
---Ted on 4/19/08

You have to ask yourself, if you are trying to have access to your relatives through familiar spirits - if you are even a Christian at all.

To absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. There is no more communication with any person who is with the Lord. So why would you try?

If they are not present with the Lord, and that element of doubt nags at your heart - only a non-believer would even try to communicate with the dead.
---Ted on 4/19/08

If you're communicating with familiar spirits, you are not in Christ.

No servant can serve two masters, for you will hate the one and love the other.
Your loyalty will be with the devil and familiar spirits and despise Christ.
You cannot serve God and mammon.
Luke 16:13

It's written all right there, the account of the rich man in Hades and no servant can serve two masters.

You can't play with the occult and be in Christ.
---Ted on 4/19/08

"God knows the hearts, what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God."
It is forbidden to have communication with the dead through a medium and familiar spirits.

If you find this an acceptable practice, you are not in or with Christ. It's also possible that in doing so, you have become possessed with a demon. Can a "Christian" have a devil in them? Or can someone try to pass themselves off as a Christian with a demon, the answer would be yes.
---Ted on 4/19/08

Familiar spirits cannot access anyone with God. It's not possible.
Familiar spirits possess or hang out with those that are not 100% in Christ.

You cannot have it both ways. God would not allow a medium possessed with the devil to access a believer, a child of God.

Read the account of the rich man in hell wanting a drink of water. Luke 16:20-31
He was tormented in Hades.
The beggar was in Paradise.
---Ted on 4/19/08

Ted, what you say is very wise. There is a line to be drawn between simple games like 'pin the tail on the donkey' or trying to guess a card like in 'Kim's game' and the occult practises. The line is blurred. We must be very careful.

However, I disagree that all familiar spirits imitate the loved ones therefore the loved ones are in Hell.
---frances008 on 4/18/08

The demons would know about the person up to the point of that person's death, knowing his life quite well. Even spies can be used, and are used in faking some of these seances to impress the audience.

On the other side of the coin, we can expose the frauds and also defend Christianity, only by knowing what they think and why they think it. This knowledge of spiritual principles can help us to exercise authority over them.
---frances008 on 4/18/08

If we are called to fight the war against the occult, we might want to know what they are accusing us of, so that we can defend ourselves, and our faith. Be ready, so to speak, and thus be able to convert people using Bible quotes etc. Preparation.
---frances008 on 4/18/08

No,No, they did not say they were with God. Familiar spirits said they were lost and lonely. The familiar spirits are clearly not with God.

But those celebrities - were they in hell?

Familiar spirits cannot access someone that is with God. That's why if you want to be with God, stay away from familiar spirits.
Whoever is being accessed through a seance, but really the familiar spirits - is that your sign, your strongest indicator that they are already in hell?
---Ted on 4/18/08

I believe that was my lesson, but I'm not to watch anymore of them to learn it again.

If a familiar spirit can mimic your loved one, there is a serious problem. Your loved one may be forever lost, in hell.
---Ted on 4/18/08

God forbids necromancy and seeking wizards, mediums. If you do, those demons are invited to attach themselves to you by your invite.
If you have demons, get rid of them, or you risk being lost forever, lonely - headed for hell. At a later date, a medium may try to access your familiar spirits and be visiting with hell.
---Ted on 4/18/08

Yes and please let me explain why. When a person gets saved and Holy Ghost Baptized, the demons don't say, "oh no, so and so said the sinners prayer and here comes the Holy Spirit, so we must leave this person's body." They do NOT voluntarily leave-they must be casted out. They dwell in the flesh part of the Christian. They Holy Spirit dwells in union with man's spirit. Two separate dwellings. I am running out of my 85 words to explain this further-sorry.

There is nothing spectacular about becoming a medium. It's not a gift, it is demonic.
Anyone that wants to become possessed by the devil can. All you have to do is open that door that gives the medium limited demonic power. But even that limited power is enough to keep someone enticed for the rest of their earthly life, dying and busting hells gate's wide open. It leads to hell, and you're not dead, but forever lost.
---Ted on 4/18/08

The worst part about this program, they asked for volunteers of children because children have stronger faith to believe in the supernatural. They had a group of children asked to use their minds to start stopped clocks and bend spoons. It was a practical use of their knowledge that no doubt they've been reading up on with the help of childrens books teaching them the craft.
---Ted on 4/18/08

Many Christians feel that watching these type of programs are simply entertainment. They are not. Subtle but effective, they are doors that will lead you away from Jesus Christ, confuse and cloud your mind, mixing faith with witchcraft. Similar to ghost hunting shows, filming demons/paranormal movements, demons would like nothing better than for you to keep an open mind and an open door for them to come through.
---Ted on 4/18/08

If you've used occultic objects, ouija boards, participated in seances, cast spells, spoken curses over anything or anyone, you've opened doors. If you have familiar spirits visiting your house, electronics, clocks, completely fascinated with these shows, there's a problem.
If you do not have any conviction about watching or participating - If the Holy Spirit seems far, far away, but you're strongly drawn like a moth to the flame to this activity, there is a spiritual problem.
---Ted on 4/18/08

If you can't hear the Holy Spirit telling you to turn away from watching seances, paranormal shows, right NOW! - there is a problem. This is not an activity that Christians should take part in. Even if you think you're strong enough mentally, spiritually while you're not aware, you can invite familiars over to your house, your temple, your body. They may begin to whisper in your ears and tell you that evil is good.
---Ted on 4/18/08

My thought about celebrities being called back from the dead through the seance...are they lost in hell.
The familiar spirits were speaking, it was not the celebrities. But the fact that they were able to access or quote them verbatim, was it an indication those celebrities were forever lost at the time of their death?
---Ted on 4/18/08

Something to think about if you try to access your dead loved ones through a seance.
Are they even with God?

Familiar spirits, if they're hanging out with you - are you dead to Christ?
Is Christ in you at all if you're demon possessed and inviting them in every time you turn around?
---Ted on 4/18/08

If you're familiar with familiars and hanging out in their territories, haunts, are you in Christ at all?
The devil will speak using familiar spirits. They can remember everything people have said and done while they were alive on earth. They really do not know the future..

I'm telling you, what I witnessed on tv with those two celebrities....Neither one of them said they were happy or with God.
---Ted on 4/18/08

Flipping through channels, on reality tv was a live seance. A medium was channeling two famous celebrities for loved ones. I watched momentarily as he allowed familiar spirits to take over his body. The relatives claimed what he was saying was right on, and only they would know what he was telling them.

Familiar spirits work that way. They can come down through generations of your ancestors, are familiar with everything they've witnessed and can tell in great detail everything about the past.
---Ted on 4/18/08

The medium was possessed, everyone considered it a gift. The audience was mesmerized, I knew I was to stop watching. I fully expect tv will become filled with these type of programs. People will be drawn to it like moths to the flame. It is a door that will tempt Christians away from God.
The next segment was asking for volunteers to use the ouija board, those who had success with ouija boards were preferred. I switched the channel.
These are avenues that lead to demon possession.
---Ted on 4/18/08

MMR, I think your name is Michelle (?) whatever, I wish to say that I agree with a lot of what you write. However it is well known that towards the end of this era, before the tribulation, many many demons are due, and have already, been released into the world. Millions who call themselves Christians are demon infested right this minute.
---Frances008 on 4/18/08

They pray to idols, they are disobedient to the Commands of God, etc. They have become unable to recognize the truth from lies. They love lies. These are not my opinions but the opinions of theologians and the Bible too. Deceiving spirits are simply all over the place. Whoever you are, whether Michelle or not, you are wrong.

But they are trying to treat the demon possessed and they can only be cured by exorcism/deliverance. Mental health profession, therapy helps those with illness but does little for those that are demon possessed.

Those with mental illness do not react towards Christianity with a strong aversion, but the demon possessed do.
---MMR on 4/17/08

There are Christians suffering with mental illness that absolutely love Jesus Christ, and cling to Him with their very lives.

The demon possessed do not love Jesus Christ or anything about Christianity.

Want to know if a "Christian" has a demon?

Do they have a strong aversion to the Name of Jesus Christ?
What comes out of their mouth when they speak of Christianity?
What happens when they are in the presence of other Christians?

Mentally ill do not react with that strong aversion and they are not to be confused with the demon possessed. Even if a mentally ill person does not know Jesus Christ, you will not see those strong reactions of aversion...Abnormal strength, etc.

Many Christians discount demon possession, that it no longer exists today.

Possession is no longer common, and the necessity for exorcism/deliverance was widespread only during the ministry of Jesus and shortly afterwards. It is very rare or non-existent today. Perhaps Jesus' presence on earth caused Satan and his demons to become unusually active. Or perhaps, Jesus and the apostles cured many possessed people in order to prove to the public that Jesus was the Messiah.
---MMR on 4/17/08

With the establishment of the Christian church, they believe the need for exorcisms completely faded. They assume that contemporary reports of possessions by evil spirits are all (or essentially all) invalid. What appears to be demonic possession is really caused by mental illness in every case. Exorcisms/deliverances are potentially dangerous and abusive to their victims - so there is not a need for them today.

There are Christians that believe God's Word is true, that these signs shall follow those that believe - cast out devils, demons and pray for the sick.

Possession still happens, necessity for deliverance is as valid today as it was in 1st century Palestine. Many people who are being treated by psychiatrists and psychologists and other therapists are not suffering with mental illness, which can be cured/alleviated by treatment.

Symptoms of oppression: abnormal and irrational fear, anxiety & loneliness, lack of goals, depression, lack of logical reasoning ability but seek power and control.
Symptoms of possession: uncontrolled swearing, extreme physical strength, unexpected change in IQ, intense negative reaction when Jesus' name is spoken, extreme fear in presence of Christians, violent behavior, life-threatening behavior, exhibiting paranormal abilities, severe depression.

We have to lean on Jesus for this one. If we are actively doing God's will, I believe we are protected by God from all demons. When we step out of his will, we open ourselves up to their influence and even possession. Just because demons and even sin is not made manifest does not mean that person is not infested with demons. As we grow from babes in Christ, to mature spiritual adults, we should have less and less bother from demons.

Acts 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

What is your idea of possessed? Is it of one foaming at the mouth?
Whether a man does "Satan's work" or is his "mouthpiece", what
difference does it make? Is it not done against God's better
counsel? A "Christian" that sins does better service to Satan's
cause than a heathen's transgressions.

2 Peter 2:18: "For when they speak great swelling words of vanity,
they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness,
those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19: While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants
of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he
brought in bondage."

#1 Mark V: I understand that Satan can't read minds, I meant to say when one complains about their problem to someone, that is when Satan has a hay-day and starts tormenting their mind. Again I'll say for the third time, I know Satan can not possess a true child of God. I know that the only power Satan has is what one gives him. And people tend to give him a lot of power when they let their guard down.
---Rebecca_D on 4/10/08

Jesus called his disciples 'evil' and he knew what was in Judas from the beginning. He addressed Peter as having Satan in him. I think Christians are forever warring against attacks, both on their own bodies, and through the words and actions of the demons in others. We ought to study the subject. 'War on the Saints' is an online book on this topic.

I believe, though I have no direct experience, that Satan can easily possess even a baby's body, for the purpose of destroying the baby and causing great upset to the family. When this happens the united prayers of believers in a timely fashion can defeat the devil, but the family should make sure they are following God's commands in all things.
---frances008 on 4/10/08

Rebecca, what I meant by saying that Satan cannot possess a person is that although he may have temporary control over a person while they are alive, (tricked or not, it was the individual's choice not to run to God for help), he is not permitted to taunt or control us when we die. God bless you.
---deb on 4/10/08

#2. Rebecca: I like how you answer and I know you are sincere in what you say. But you have to remember that when we speak of the word of God we have to be careful because many times it contradicts other parts of the Bible. Let me also say that there is no war going on between God and Satan. Satan is a created being. He is only in this world because God permits him to be. All authority and power belongs to our God. And it will end as He says it will end.
---Mark_V. on 4/10/08

#3. Rebecca: Sure the devil is someone we should never try to tangle with. Many here think they can have power of him and find themselves in a big mess. We can speak in the name of the Lord, and he will go away, but he doesn't stop. If we were protected from him so that he would never tempt us, it would be great, but we cannot, because God permits him to continue only to the extend that God allows. It is always for God's purpose and will. When the time comes he will no longer trouble anyone.

Again you are wrong Rebecca, Satan cannot read minds. If he could he would have read the mind of Christ and would not have tempted the people that killed Him to kill Him. He is someone we should always be aware of. Someone you cannot play with. But a child of God cannot be possessed by any demon or Satan. If you believe that then Satan is a part of your body since you are one body in Christ. And Satan is not part of the Church the bride of Christ. Never has and never will.
---Mark_V. on 4/10/08

#1. Mark V: Who else will get into someone's mind and make them have a troubled mind if not Satan? That is what he does, that is how he responds, to our mind. A person has a pain in their side, they think to themselves something is wrong. When Satan finds out he will feed off of that person having thoughts on that pain and he makes it worse. For to long, they think they have appendicitis. But come to find out, that pain was nothing. So they worried for no reason. Satan came to kill, steal and destroy.
---Rebecca_D on 4/10/08

#2. Mark V. No I do not think it was God who took this man who killed himself. God wouldn't tell anyone to end their pain and suffering by taking their own life. What a person should do is humble themselves to God that he may exalt us in due time, casting all our cares upon him, because he cares for us. God tells us to be sober, vigilant, because our adversary the devil as a roaring lion walking about, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:6-8. Read these verses.
---Rebecca_D on 4/10/08

#3. Mark V. Maybe this Preacher was somewhat like Job. Job was a devoted man of God. Satan had his eye on Job. He wanted Job to curse God and die. He done everything to this man, in which God allowed. The point is, Satan will do what he can, when he can to whomever. It doesn't matter who the person is. The more one strives to get closer to God, the more Satan is going to attack. Maybe God had big plans for this Preacher and Satan knew this so he had to act fast by tormenting this man's mind.

Nana, what you said about temptation is true, what you said about Jesus is not. Jesus was not suggesting Peter had a demon or a devil. The harshness of this rebuke contrast sharply with Christ's Words of commendation in vv. 17-19. Jesus suggested that Peter was been a mouthpiece for Satan. Jesus death was part of God's sovereign plan (Acts 2:23, 4:27,29). Christ had come with the express purpose of dying as an atonement for sin (John 12:27) and those who would thwart His mission were doing Satan's work.
---Mark_V. on 4/10/08

#2. Nana: many people are mouthpieces for Satan when they cuss or say words that are not from God. Many times they don't realize what they are doing until later on and they repent. It does not mean possessed.
---Mark_V. on 4/10/08

Was Jesus kidding when speaking to Peter in Matt 16:23?
Well, I have not seen any Scriptures that point to Jesus
making light work of such a thing. He actually called out
to Satan while addressing Peter. A Christian's inmunity
from evil comes from abiding in the things of God and in
prayerfulness and watchfulness.
Mark 14:38: "Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into
temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak."
---Nana on 4/9/08

What is the end of the road for temptation, where does it
lead to? James 1:14: "But every man is tempted, when he
is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15: Then when
lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is
finished, bringeth forth death. 16: Do not err, my beloved
brethren." Well, it leads to death!

Mark V>>>There you go.
---catherine on 4/9/08

Rebecca, did you ever stop to think that maybe it was not satan or a demon the reason he killed himself? Maybe it was his troubled mind. Why does it have to be Satan? Or did you think that maybe it was God who took him? And really, how can you know who has the Holy Spirit? Only God can see the heart. When we make a statement it can have consequences on other passages of Scripture. True believer are one with Christ. One body, and Satan is not a part of that body.
---Mark_V. on 4/9/08

Mark V: I never said he was possessed by demons. He gave Satan an opportunity to torment his mind. He wasn't possessed by Satan or his demons, let me make that clear. We all got some bad news sometime in our life. And most of us, will dwell on that bad news, giving Satan the advantage to have a strong hold on us. Just because one ends their life, that doesn't mean they are possessed by demons. Satan has his hand in it, but I know that a holy ghost filled believer can not be possessed by demons.

Catherine: That Preacher did have God abiding in him. What happened was, he got some bad news and let his guard down, allowing Satan to torment his mind. He spoke to him through the mind as he does to a lot of other people. He wasn't possessed by a demon. He left a crack in the door and Satan walked right on in. This is why we should be ready to expect anything to happen in life. He wasn't a fake Preacher by no means. Like Eve, he listened to Satan instead of God.
---Rebecca_D on 4/8/08

Deb: I would have to disagree with you that Satan can not possess a person. Because he can. Christ rebuked a legion of demons out of one man. Demons are fallen angels and Satan is their master, so yes he can possess a person (sinner/backslider).
---Rebecca_D on 4/8/08

Rebecca, I am sorry but again I have to disagree with you. No true born again believer can be possessed by demons or satan. If they could, they would be one with Christ since all true Christians are baptized into one body with Christ. When someone makes a statement like that, it has great concequences on other passages. Also no one dies without the permission of God. God determines when and where we are born and when and where we will die. Not the devil.
---Mark_V. on 4/8/08

#2. Rebecca: If God wanted that preacher to last another day, another year, he would have lasted that long. The devil is not Sovereign, God is Sovereign. Putting Satan above God is not a thing Christians should be doing. There is only one Ruler and that is God. There no question that many Christians are tempted, and harassed but satan or demons can never take residence in our hearts.

No!>>> Christians cannot have demons in them. Jesus Christ lives in each true Believer. However, Satan can cause havoic for a true believer. In the mind, yes and physically yes. There are many who call themselves Christian that can have a demon.
Well versed theologians, deacons, even ministers that only know God intellectually can have a demon. These are those that refer to the Holy Spirit as a transforming agent or thing. Those that give the Holy Spirit a substandard place in their hearts. The Holy Spirit is not in them and yes, they can have a demon.
---Ted on 4/7/08

Those that refer to the Holy Spirit as a transforming agent, thing can try to cast out demons. They may even see some success.

God says there will be those that cast out demons in His Name, but He will say, Depart from Me, I never knew you.

Those who only know God with their minds can have a demon. Their hearts have not been changed because they deny the power of the Holy Spirit.
---Ted on 4/7/08

Yes they can. The evil spirits walks in dry places, wanting to go back into the house he found swept clean, and when he does come back in the house (body of a person) he brings 7 other spirits with him, making that person stronger and meaner than before. I knew of someone who went to church for 40 years, a great man of God, they found him the next day, he shot himself through the neck. Satan, yes that is exactly what happened.
