I was saved when I was 17 I'm now 51 I consider myself a mature christian. I own a local bar and the ministry that goes on there is incredible . If christians owned all the bars there would be a whole lot of ministry going on. upstairs from the bar I have 13 rooms that I rent out ,mostly to low income people, alot of them are alcoholics.I run 2 bible studies during the week for these people ,they are the kind of people jesus hung out with.God is doing a great work here. Now I'm going to have church services in the bar on sunday mornings.please don't kring, this is what christianity is all about!we have seperated ourselves from the world to where we are weird to them not salt to them.

It's not a sin, but it's also not a good idea.

If you're so concerned about a friend working in a bar, you can always quit your job so he can have it.

Otherwise, mind your own business.

Interesting story about a person in a bar. A friend of my parents was sitting in a bar drinking Falstaff beer, which gives you some indication how long ago this happen, when suddenly he began to speak in tongues. The bartender came to him and said, I know what this is its called tongues
and it's what they do in the Assembly of God Church. So go down that church and talk to the preacher. He did. Got saved. And I knew him for many years, today he's
in Heaven.
---Mima on 2/17/08

I used to work at a bar for over ten tears and I struggled with the same issue. I finnay stopped working recently. There is a scripture that comes to mind. Mt 6:23-BUT IF THINE EYE BE EVIL, THY WHOLE BODY SHALL BE FULL OF DARKNESS. IF THEREFORE THE LIGHT THAT IS IN THEE BE DARKNESS, HOW GREAT IS THAT DARKNESS.

When I was delivered from alcohol & gambling among other things, the bar scene & all it had to offer went with them. Satan really had me bound, but Echad/God through His only begotten Son, Grace & Mercy delivered me, from bondages/sins known & unknown.

His Word(s) were my 'spiritual rotor rooter', His Blood, my fullers soap.

"What is a "spirit-filled" Christian?"

Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Jn 3:6 ..which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again.

1 Pt 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and stays for ever.
---a_servant on 7/31/07

John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him, for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

Mark 16:20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
This was after the ascension into heaven.
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

This is true that the Spirit is given in measure but not the indwelling Spirit Because it is the life it is the same indwelling Spirit that was in Christ Jesus and it will give life to your mortal body,
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

The Spirit that is in Measure is the outward manifestation where the gifts and calling of God is in operation it sometimes only comes upon a believer when God is using them for a specific purpose as prophecy or tongues and interpretation it is given by measure as it
pleases the Holy Ghost it is upon the believer but when the Spirit is working with the Believer it is Jesus and it is the fullness of the Spirit not many operate in this aspect of the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you,
Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
If a Christian abides by these things they can work where ever they want,
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

we are in the world but not of it, if where you are is
corrupting you, leave, for Lot did not realize his corruption it was slow day by day. This is an individual's decision and not
another's judgment call. Unless you see that person in a sin. trying to make a living sometimes is not as easy for some people, but you should not sell Jesus out for any reason.
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

alan_of_UK, The Holy Spirit can be given to man in measures(Numbers 11:17,25), the Word proves this. Every true born-again child of God receives the Spirit in part, but those with the true Baptism of the Holy Spirit, are able to receive the Spirit without limit(John 3:34)(Acts 2:17,18), as they continue to yield themselves to God. With that being said, sadly, many Christians don't even have the Spirit at all, only a "title" (Jude 1:19). God Bless!
---Mrs._Morgan on 7/30/07

All born again Christians are Spirit filled if they are not, they are not born again that which is born of Spirit is Spirit. The only way we are one with the Father and the Son is by the Spirit If you are not one, you are none of his.
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

All born again Christians are not Baptized in the Spirit and have not received power to be a witness, Without the outward manifestation of the Spirit you will see no power of the Spirit in you life, The manifestation of the Spirit is in you, upon you, and with you, you must have all of these manifestations to operate in the fullness of the Spirit.
---exzucuh on 7/30/07

AlanofUK - All true Christians are born-again, but not all are filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in a believer the moment they become born-again. But to be filled, one must be baptised in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This happens after salvation.

What is a "spirit-filled" Christian?
Is he or she better than a "born-again" Christian?
Surely ALL Christians are both born again, and filled with the Spirit?
---alan_of_UK on 7/30/07

I know several people whom has done things to end up in jail or prison. Once in there, that was it, their freedom was gone. That opened up their eyes. And yes they became borned again and once they got out of prison, God called them to do his work on spreading the gospel. Sometimes a person has to go through the fire, to get to the fire. Sometimes God will let you go through things just to open your eyes. A lesson learned.
---Rebecca_D on 7/29/07

If a person wants to get drunk. Try drinking the new wine (Holy Ghost) as the people did when the Holy Ghost came down upon them. They were accused of being drunk. Acts 2:1-18. Drink from your saucer cause your cup has overflowed.

Spirit-filled Christians will not be routinely getting drunk. The Spirit inside them leads them to HOLINESS, not drunkenness.

New Spirit-filled Christians may go to bars after their conversion for a short time out of habit, but they will soon stop, & will greatly reduce alcohol intake, as the Spirit leads them to a Spiritual "high", to which alcohol cannot compare.

Lori: Being a "loyal" member of a church is not the same thing as being a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. Many people have been sitting in a church building for years and years and still do not know Jesus. When asked, they would say they have been a loyal member of whichever denominatin they attend. So...according to your theory, almost everyone that we sit in church with, will at some time in the future, be in prison. I sure hope not!
---Holly4jc on 7/29/07

1) My pastor, my friend's husband and someone else I know do prison ministry. They go in to preach the gospel. Some of the men in the prison accept the Lord after a time, but even more don't. The majority of these men were never Christians, but by God's grace, a number of them do BECOME Christians. Of course you can never say that absolutely no on in prison isn't a backsliden Christian, because it does happen.
---Holly4jc on 7/29/07

2 But..if someone is truly submitted to and following Christ, then they should not end up doing the type of things that you end up in prison for. You have to wonder, were these people ever really saved to begin with? "You will know them by their fruits".

Holly: watch america's most wanted, the biography channel, etc. if you did, you would not post your blog. many of the most notorious criminals in history were loyal members of baptist, pentacostle, church of God etc. churches. they are locked up now. one lady I watched. she was married and began an affair with her organist at the church she attended, she arranged for the murder of her husband. there are many men and women in prison for DUI offenses where they killed people from my own congregation.
---Lori on 7/29/07

My husband is a Police Officer and a Preacher. While doing the arrest, the person would be cussing, hollering, etc. He asked them to refrain from that language cause he was a Preacher. Most of them apologized and changed their actions. One person asked did he have the power to send him to hell, and started crying. He said no, but you do. Needless to say, he led him to the Lord, among others. They still had to face jail or prison, but they were saved going in. Coming out, only God knows.
---Rebecca_D on 7/29/07

Lori: our prisons are filled with saved christian men and women, guilty of every crime imaginable.

Yeah...and Hitler was really a nice guy, a saved, born-again Christian and so were all his followers who just happened to be guilty of every crime imaginable and of many crimes that are UNimaginable!! NOT!!!! I don't know what planet you are living on.
---Holly4jc on 7/29/07

1) Lori: I'm sorry...but I have to wonder what you or your friend's definition of "born-again Christian" is. I have many, many born again Christian friends and NONE of them hang out in bars, love to drink or drink excessively (some may have a glass of wine on a special occassion), or participate in the kinds of things that go on in a bar. None of my Christian friends that have gotten married have ever had one of those "bachelor or bacholorette" stag parties you speak of.

2) Lori: I don't know your definition of Christian, but it certainly cannot be the bible's definition. Just because someone SAYS they are a Christian, that doesnt mean they are. You will know them by their fruits and the people you are describing have the fruits of the devil, not of God. I think you and your friend need to read the bible to find out what a REAL Christian is and then hold up God's measuring stick (the bible) to the person you meet in a bar who SAYS they are a born-again Christian.
---Holly4jc on 7/28/07

3) Lori: The truth of who they serve will be very clear. The bible says you cannot serve 2 masters and Jesus said either you are for Him or against Him. No inbetween. Those for Him no longer continue to participate in willful sin. the bible, you will learn alot and it will be easy to spot the fake Christians that only give lip service.
---Holly4jc on 7/28/07

4) Lori: It breaks my heart that those fake Christians (who act as hypocrites to the faith) present a false picture of a true Christian and Christianity in general, not to mention, misrepresent Jesus Christ and His saving power. Anyone with spiritual discernment can see that those people are agents of Satan, planted to make Jesus look bad and bring discredit to Christianity and to Jesus. Open your eyes, it is crystal clear!

The Lord Jesus Christ set me totally free from Alcoholism and I will not for any reason allow my presence in one of those places. Holly I am deadly serious. My friend has entertained in the bar and club scene for 27 years. he has met more born again christians in bars that are drunk than you have hairs on your head. People love to drink alcohol. It doesn't matter what church they belong to. He used to tell me, he always watches people. When they enter they are nice and praise God. After 3 drinks, they become rude, self righteous, arrogant and hoes. Their real selves are exposed for all to see.

He is the horse's patoot.
---Kelly on 7/28/07

Holly con't. Never deceive yourself that everyone praising God is nice and follows the Saviors example. What happens the night before a wedding. Men and women hold stags and go to strip bars. they are then in church the next day. People working there are sober, it is a job. Born again christians are there of their own free will to live in satan's world. with inhibitions lowered, Satan tempts us with both hands. leading to affairs, one night stands, lies, murder, fights, hatred, etc.
---Lori on 7/28/07

1)'re not serious are ya? I used to practically LIVE in bars before I got saved and must say, I cannot remember ever meeting a "born-again" Christian in such a place. Granted...there might be a backslider or two mixed in the bunch...but that is NOT the majority. I do not believe in Christians working in a place that promotes a sinful lifestyle, not to mention the bible says to FLEE from temptation.

2) Lori: Anyone who says there isn't temptation in that environment is a liar and should take heed, lest he fall. Temptations of all sorts abound in that kind of place. I myself did backslide at the beginning of my walk, for a very short time, going back into the bars and I felt a HUGE difference in my walk with God, in my ability to hear from God and being able to experience His presence daily in my life...
---Holly4jc on 7/28/07

3) Lori: ...and I wasn't even back into the drinking....just going there to dance and hang out. Why would you want to hang out in the enemy's camp? What does darkness have to do with light? Anyone in their right mind wouldn't, hang out in the enemy's territory UNLESS God specifically called you to go in on His mission for a very short time and even then, you'd have to really, really be sure it was God sending you in or else the enemy would eat you alive. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit...
---Holly4jc on 7/28/07

4) Lori: ...if Jesus was standing by your side during your shift at work (which He really is) would you want Him to stand there while you mix drink after drink after drink and serve it to someone who will most likely get drunk, possibly drive drunk, maybe kill someone or get involved in a compromising, intimate situation with another person whom is not their spouse? Would Jesus be proud of you for doing this? Would He say...Well done my good and faithful servant? I think not!
---Holly4jc on 7/28/07

Here in the UK, drinking is a massive problem and I am sure that it is demonic.
I am not sure what I think about the question though - we should be out there in the world shining God's light into the darkness not turning our backs on it. As a general 'rule' Christians should try to meet those people who most need Christ but possibly working in a bar is not the best way to do this.

You can do anything that contibutes to honoring God, but nothing that serves the interests of Satan.
---a_servant on 7/27/07

The answer is yes. we can work as bartenders, waitresses, bouncers in bars, clubs etc. why, because the customers walking through the door are born again christians indulging in the evils satan presents to them. millions of alcoholics, addicts and criminals are born again christians. anyone saying otherwise is living in a fantasy world. no one can deny the truth. our prisons are filled with saved christian men and women, guilty of every crime imaginable.

I apologize. My reply was not aimed at any one individual. It goes for everyone. If we live our lives in righteousness, avoiding the evils of the world, our example speaks volumes, not our words. Many people who condemn others for living as a light of Christ should look in the mirror, because chances are good they are the ones in danger of being cast out. Everyone has sins to repent of. That is what I meant. It wasn't directed at Ryan himself.
---ashley on 6/11/07

ashley, we are called to be the light of the world. We are told not to hide the light under a blanket, this is exactly what many people do when they hide in their buildings once a week. They show their worship and praise in confinement instead of living the testimony. BTW you seem awfuly condeming of me.
---Ryan_Z on 6/11/07

Ashley, if you would carefully re-read Ryan's post, you will find that he is not saying what you think he is saying. I started to answer his post incorrectly until I read it again and realized that he was making an illustrative point. As for your judging him as a sinner, it reminds me of the Pharisee in Luke 18 who said, "I thank Thee that I am not like this publican." While you are busy trusting in yourself that you are righteous, a humble man is going home justified.
---Linda on 6/11/07

ryan: you said God forbid saved people from mingling with sinners, but that is exactly what you do seven days a week. even in your church. many are hypocrites and profess God only when their hearts are far from him. Many indulge in sins of the world with no remorse, including you. Before you say things to others, look in the mirror and ask yourself are you not also condemning yourself.

God forbid that any holy and righteous person should be found amongst sinners!! God forbid that the saved of God should be out in the mission field actively spreading the good news!! Those that believe themselves to be rich in the spirit wouldn't be caught dead in a bar or a place where sinners gather!! It's much better for the holy of God to only associate with themselves in a building where God does not live once a week!!

I would not work in bars or any organization that sells alcohol, tobacco or drugs. If you sell it, you are giving your ok on it and moving satan's kingdom forward. Christ made strong alcoholic wine of high quality and participated in a wedding feast where it was served. Alcohol abuse is a contemporary Social Issue; you could be dead drunk and still ride a donkey but you can't do it riding a chariot or any modem motor convenience. As much as the Temperance crowd would like to make it so, Alcohol is no more a Christian issue than Abortion is. The problem is abuse not use.
---Phil_the_Elder on 12/25/06

A Christian can certainly work in a place that sells alcohol, wasn't jesus known for being seen with sinners? However, to be subjected on a daily basis could be difficult. Before I had children to care for I used to visit bars just to witness. There are many there just because they don't know anything else. They welcome a caring person.

There are many "I believe" statements among us Christians today. It is as though what "I believe" has any relavance on the absolute truth. God's word is always true, no matter what "I believe." It lowers God's standard to ours. Let's instead merely stick to what God says, and leave our opinions out. Then we don't need to speculate if Jesus handed out alcohol.
---Daniel on 12/25/06

Neither "wine" nor "beer" are addictive. ALCOHOL is. What matters is the amount of alcohol in the beverage. The percentage of alcohol in a drink merely tells you what quantity you need to ingest to get a certain amount of alcohol into your blood.

John - Jesus did not hand out wine at the wedding in Cana. Yes, He did pass around the Last Supper cup with wine in it. I am talking about a sleezy Hotel/Bar setting. Would Jesus get behind the bar and hand out alcohol to all and sundry, and then come out from there stinking of alcohol Himself?
---Helen_5378 on 10/10/06

john , There are many kinds of wine, Jesus would never hand a person something that they could get intoxicated from. I believe the wine that Jesus produced was either extremely low in fermentation, or had no fermentation at all, we must never forget to use godly reasoning, in regard to the Word.
