Why Don't People Read The Bible

The Word of God is complete and accurate, yes. Why so man simple questions that can be answered simply by reading an accurate bible (not Witnesses or Mormons, of example). So simply stated, why are people so lazy not to read the bible themselves; but are satisfied by poeples explanations?

I think a more fundamental problem is that most people read the Bible - not to see what God requires of them - but rather how they can justify their existing opinions and lifestyle. They look for the easy road to heaven rather than a love relationship with their Creator. If you love someone, surely you would earnestly read their love letters.

---jerry6593 on 2/13/16

Samuel and StrongAxe, it amazes me that you both think you know the TRUE reason why people don't read the Bible.

Seems judgmental to me. Let God be God.

Facts hurt I know. Just because you had a whole blog on it does not mean it WIPES out 1000 years of Scriptures.

Sorry, but it doesn't work like that.
---Nicole_Lacey on 2/12/16

Good points Strong ax. I appreciate your good points quite often. Keep it up.

Nicole we did a whole blog question on this earlier. It was pointed out many did not in the 1,000 years you mention did not accept them as canonical.

Actually spend some time reading the discussions and arguments online about this. Do the historical research.

---Samuelbb7 on 2/11/16

I think it's more likely that the reverse of this is true. Many people don't bother to read the bible, because they "know" that it already agrees with them, so there's no need to see if that's actually true. The very idea that some of their ideas might not be biblical is so foreign to them, that it doesn't even enter into their heads (and they react violently to anyone who even suggests it). Unfortunately, the "my mind is made up - don't confuse me with the facts" attitude is all too common, in contrast with the biblically approved example of the Bereans who never took anything for granted, but rather "searched the scripture daily to see if these things be so".
---StrongAxe on 2/10/16

The Mormons belive the Bible is the word of God, inasmuch as it is translated correctly, and the Book of Mormon is the word of God. It is curious they place a (sensible) condition on the accuracy of translation of the Bible, yet they lack the caution to place a similar condition on the Book of Mormon - they assume it must necessarily be translated correctly because their prophet (Joseph Smith) couldn't possibly have been wrong when translating it - even though he was proven hilariously wrong when translating other things (e.g. a heiroglyphic fragment he bought from a traveling salesman, and that he claimed was the Book of Abraham - but it was later shown to show religious practices of pagan Egyptian gods).
---StrongAxe on 2/9/16

I said many don't read because they are afraid of what the Bible will say they are doing wrong. That as you so well point out does not include everyone. Also I pointed to no one person.

As to why we do not consider the non canonical books as not canonical.--Samuelbb7 on 2/8/16

It doesn't matter who you address your statement. You still don't know WHY they are not reading the Bible.

Again. For 1000 years ALL Christians consider the books in the OT that you NOW consider non canonical books as canonical.

Not until the 16 Century did those Canonical books became non canonical books.

What happened 1000 years later to make the change?

All Christians were in agreement for 1000 years!
---Nicole_Lacey on 2/9/16

Actually mike the Jw use the New World translation which they had their people write.

They sometimes use others but prefer theirs.

Also many people just hate to read period today.
---Samuelbb7 on 2/9/16

No one follows the Bible any more, so why will they want to read it? The church has particularly gotten away from the Bible. Of Mormons, other than the Book of Mormons, the Mormons still use the King James which is regarded as a reliable English translation, and the Witness use every Bible translation and they do read the Bible.
---mike4879 on 2/8/16

Nicole maybe I did not state myself clearly.

I said many don't read because they are afraid of what the Bible will say they are doing wrong. That as you so well point out does not include everyone. Also I pointed to no one person. Just that some do this. So I was not being judgmental just stating a General observation.

As to why we do not consider the non canonical books as not canonical. It is because scholars both Hebrew and Christian from Jerome on down have pointed this out.

The question should be to me is to I follow the Bible. Do I consider it my final authority is all spiritual matters and true teachings of GOD.

The answer is yes I do.

---Samuelbb7 on 2/8/16

Sam, you should not judge.

Many can't read. Billions.

Many who can read, still can't comprehend certain levels of reading materials.

Others don't know if the translation is correct or not.

Also, I can't understand why many Protestants accept only 66 books of the 73 book Bible?

Just because one man came alone 1000 years later claiming the Christian Community had it ALL WRONG for 1000 years by selecting the wrong OT.

But no worries. God created him to finally stop the error and cut 7 books out of the OT and call it by a new name.

Martin Luther was a God sent.

Or was he???
---Nicole_Lacey on 2/7/16

Many people do not want to read the Bible. Since it might make them give up the wrong things they are doing. They prefer smooth words and lies. Just like the Bible predicted would happen. Read Jude and 2 peter.

---Samuelbb7 on 2/1/16

They have to read it to re-write it. Thus, the greater concern is the re-writing of it.

2 Kings 22, the word was hid for a time. No one read it. No one knew of it. After a time, it was discovered. When it was read, people repented.

The error now days is that of replacing the Bible with other teachings. We nullify the word of God for modern teachings. We are "REPLACE" Testament christians.

Trav, the preacher I referred to was the one in YOUR description ...
---Rita_H on 11/20/14

I know.
I go to this Church...a denom. Had 3 preachers of similar type. The discussed preacher, sincere, good man of humble reputation out of his calling. He desired to preach. He was not called, nor were the other 2.
Having seen nothing scriptural... they have nothing (Meat) to share scripturally. (I read Bible when/while they speak)
I go there for one reason. I do Sunday School. Am not a member nor would join any denom... ever. When we can't go, we "home" worship with grandkids. They love we let them read and discuss scripture.
Mat_18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I..
---Trav on 11/21/14

Trav, the preacher I referred to was the one in YOUR description "Preachers read 2-3 minutes (timed it) of scripture and tell stories, analogy's and jokes for 30-45 minutes." I was not referring to anyone I know.

From your description of him (or them) I'd guess (not KNOW) that such a preacher was not saved. If he were he'd wish his listeners to hear something better than that.
---Rita_H on 11/20/14

Trav, you must have misunderstood my post in some way because your answer to me does not seem to fit in with what I actually said.
---Rita_H on 11/20/14 mine again, as well.
Was stating it is not for me to Challenge this 2.6min story telling preacher. You said he needed salvation. Not in my job description, either.
The Churches elect/place/authorize these types ... we suffer them.
I said yours were no better. Stated: your preacher has never preached Heb 8:8, the two or more scriptural witnesses or the Marriage, Divorce or remarriage of GOD. Astounding scriptural facts. Because you've never alluded to them.
Reason is, your preacher never knew these to teach them. Why? Because he was never shown. Why?
---Trav on 11/20/14

Trav, you must have misunderstood my post in some way because your answer to me does not seem to fit in with what I actually said. Please read it until you understand what I am saying. Nowhere am I referring to 'my' specific preacher. Your words confuse me.

Well we have about a 100 or more show up every Saturday.

Now I am not going to speak for all preachers. Occasionally I preach in church. My sermons are about 30 minutes and I prefer to take something like 3 john and just go over it with the church.

---Samuelbb7 on 11/20/14

... are not worth listening to and should be challenged after the service. The preacher himself is in need of salvation.
---Rita_H on 11/20/14

Challenged? Salvation? Sister, preacher is placed/elected by Church authority's. Placed, he doesn't have it and the Church sits in front of weekly/weakly, it sick and weak from Top down, authorized by the "business".
It's not ours to give out salvation. We don't do the drawing, GOD does.
Would state your preacher has never preached Heb 8:8 or the double witness or the Marriage, Divorce or remarriage of GOD. Astounding scriptural've never alluded too. Because your preacher never knew these to teach them. Why? Because he was never taught. Why? And etc, etc,
---Trav on 11/20/14

Trav, I have rarely sat through a church service where so little scripture was read as you describe here. Most churches have a bible reading as part of the service and (from that reading) the preacher will take a text (of maybe just one verse) as the heading for his sermon. The preacher will teach the listeners from that reading unless he is not a true Christian. Those who tell jokes in their sermons and mess around are not worth listening to and should be challenged after the service. The preacher himself is in need of salvation.
---Rita_H on 11/20/14

...Even going to a denomination "church" building every Sunday morning for one hour is an intrusion into their lifestyle.
---Steveng on 11/17/14

40 years this was me, I get it. And now? Preachers read 2-3 minutes (timed it) of scripture and tell stories, analogy's and jokes for 30-45 minutes. 2.6 hours of scripture per year. Hmmm. Non readers are starved spiritually. Denom driven...any meat presented is flavorized. Most preachers are confused in the book themselves... graduates of Seminary/Cemetary in the flavor preached. Rare the Teacher/Preacher who searches his own Bible. Have met one preacher out of many, and no preacher here who knew GOD was married/divorced, explaining the New Covenant. Jer 3:14, Isa 54:5.

People don't read the bible for one simple reason - selfishness. They would rather fill up their hectic lifestyle with family, friends, work, "church," shopping, TV, radio, computers, entertainment, going out on dates, travel, theme parks, video games, etc. You name it they would rather do anything, but read the bible.

Even going to a denomination "church" building every Sunday morning for one hour is an intrusion into their lifestyle. They would definately not go to a denomination "church" building if the services were held on Saturday.
---Steveng on 11/17/14

When I first became a Christian I could not stop reading the Bible.

But many feel that it is too much to read and depend on others to tell them what it says.

Others feel they cannot understand it so why bother.

I love reading my Bibles.
---Samuelbb7 on 11/17/14

Yes, the Bible is a relational guidebook to all relationships covering all manner of topics including right and wrong, different sins and different instructions and a persons relationship with God and Christ and a persons relationship with a variety of people and a persons relationship with animals and the planet. I do not find the Bible is given much significance by people, not even in church and not even in christian companies. People don't want to read what they don't want to follow.
---sin5694 on 11/17/14

The evil keeps people busy with worldly matters and they therefore do not have enough time to read God's Word.
The ones who desire to read keep other things away or out while they read it & they are blessed for doing so.

As I began to read came to my mind these scriptures, Jos1:9, also, in Jos10:25
People sometimes, go into a very depressed mood, something hurts so just feel hurt, it not right to keep to yourself, but we are not any of us perfect. There are other reasons yes, I also agree with some here, it causes to face reality they are in trouble in their lives, some do just stay away when God wants us to come to him..thankyou.God bless everyone. Love of Jesus!
---Elena_9555 on 11/5/14

We are seekers of instant gratification; very few want to "dig" and meditate to find God's will for their lives. Unless a person has a personal relationship with Jesus and baptism of His Holy Spirit, they just aren't going to get the meaning of Scripture in their heart. Pray for understanding and God will grant it. Only Jesus can open our eyes into His world of Spirit thru His Word. Otherwise it is merely an intellectual pursuit! God forbid!!
---Elsie on 8/9/08

2 Timothy>> Paul simply was warning Timothy as a pastor not to argue over words to keep off the side issues. >>It certainly takes diligent study of the word to rightly divide it "To cut a straight course", or lay out a road," or "correctly interpret". All of the word of God is true. There are no contradictions when rightly laid out. You cannot add nor take from any of it. [This Sanction is like a flaming sword, to guard the canon of the scripture from profane hands.]
---catherine on 9/26/07

People do not read or study the Bible, because to them, what is written 2 Timothy 2 14-19 is an option and not a command.

Also they would rather to listen to, and accept what people may teach or preach, and will not follow the example found it Acts 17:11.

People are deceived by Satan into thinking that they don't need to read God's Word. It is easier to not read the Bible. The Bible may convict a person of sin in one's life, and that would be uncomfortable.

cnt.. in the NWT,also the text is used in the following bible translations:
American Standered Version,An American Translation,& the revised standered version.
So the Witnesses did not "make up" a bible on their own, the committie whom wrote the version did consulting of past reliable translations to present what they have today.
---Candice on 1/2/06

Sam I noticed you said not Witnessses or Mormons, first I agree with LDS because the not the bible, though they use the KJV translation when they do read it, but the Witnesses with the NWT,I found out that the beginning is this..though translated & used in the 1950's early 60's ,the master text of Westcott& hort was the one used principally in translating the Christian GreekScriptures into English...count.

You hit the nail on the head.... Laziness. People want the blessings of God but won't pay the price.
I think it is a shallow committment. perhaps they have never really experience the true presence of God to any great degree. If they had they would long for his presence again and again. Perhaps they have never prayed through to where they had answeres to their prayer. never seen miracles occur due to their prayers.

Don't discourage anyone from asking sincere questions. This forum gives us a golden opportunity to share the gospel. We can give referrences so people can look up for themseves what the Word of God says concerning a subject in question. I think of my time here on these blogs is like a ministry. Some are babes in Christs. Sometimes the blogs are written just to make-us-think, which is irritating at first, but it works. Some blogs seem to start arguments and confusion, good reason for referrences.

Just like all those people in the feel good religions, they want to feel good about themselves. Reading the bible will not only makes us see where we are failing, but also convict our hearts in the fact that we are failing and not living right. Who wants to read a book that compares us to filthy rags? Hate to say it, truth hurts!
---jerry on 9/13/05

Sam, I really like what you said. The bible is the answer book not the rule book. I have never thought of it in those terms. You are a great theologian.
---randy on 8/23/05

The Word is the answer book, not the rule book. Many who read God's communication to us can only view it as confirmation or rejection of their own rules. If it is seen as rejection, pride will keep you away. His reality is that we have been freed from the external "tutor" and are under grace. Jesus paid the price for our sin and God is madly in love with us. Myself, I just want to hang out with Him and see what He has to tell me.

WIV makes an excellent point that there are alternatives available for those who are challenged to read and study the Word but I think there can be something that prevents people from really getting close to God and His Word.

2 Corinthians 4:4 says that the minds of unbelievers are blinded by the enemy and they are therefore prevented from perceiving God's goodness. We all know that if anyone TRULY understood what God is all about, they'd run to Him.
---DoryLory on 8/19/05

It's only logical. They reject Him because they don't really understand Him.

I think it's similar with Christians who struggle to spend time with the Word. 1 Corinthians 3:14, 15 talks about a veil that can remain over people, causing them to not understand. Moses' literal veil illustrates the spiritual veil that can cause, even born-again believers, to just not understand what they are really missing.
---DoryLory on 8/19/05

Lupe, you and Sam both refer to those not reading the bible as lazy. I just pointed out that not everyone can read. In a lot of the world where people can read they are too busy working 12-14 hour days not even making a living wage. Oh gosh am I complaining again? I am sorry, but I feel bad for them. Lupe I believe what you say is heartfelt, but I believe you have a myopic view of the world.
---randy on 8/19/05

2. Sister Ulrika just threw many questions to me and I have to take them one at a time. She might have something for me. I will look for the answers. I know many don't want to study and to me that is a big shame. They think they know it all already but they will be surprised later to find out they were wrong. Open heart and open mind in prayer we will learn more of God. I have asked others to check what I say or for that matter anyone says, to the word of God. Never take anyone's answer as solid.

Sam, I wanted to add that many times God reveals something to someone and when questions are asked on line you might began to think of something you might not have known before and then if you are serious about finding the truth you go and begin studying. I know when Pierr, Jeff, Tommy, Barbara, Dory and many others like Bruce bring out something it interest me to look for myself. The questions are good for that reason to me. Many can learn from others cause not all of us are in the same point in time.
---lupe2618 on 8/18/05

When is the last time that satan encouraged you to find some truth in the bible and stand on it in the face of the circumstances you face? I can almost hear him telling me that I'm really not that tired, or that the word of God is a greater truth. Come on, the liar will never tell you to trust in what the Lord says, and he sure doesn't want you to find how to overcome, or rise above your (or his) stuff!
---sam7944 on 8/18/05

Randy, I don't know what the relationship to Christ is on anyone. Really, when it is about God I believe too many don't spend the time cause they don't want to. Other things are more important to them. When all hell comes down on them they run to God. I know many don't have the means but I am talking about all of the ones' that go gamble, dances, parties, drinking, watch tv all day, soaps, shopping, more drinking, those people.
---lupe2618 on 8/18/05

I think you are right Madison, ignorance is bliss to many.

Lupe, sorry that you think I am complaining. I know that most of the world is unable to read or their reading skills are too poor to read the bible. It is not laziness as you Sam believe. Many have to believe what they are told and are not able to test scripture if what they are told is true. I dont believe that your salvation depends on being able to read. . Also if it were simple there would not be over 200 denominations in the US all proclaiming the word.
---randy on 8/18/05

Brother Randy, you always have some complain for everything, I am not surprise you wrote back and complain. Nothing is good for you. What I meant was if you have the means, like tv, car, movies, shopping centers, and you spend your time there more then with God. Can you not read into the lines? If you have them and don't study you don't love God. Period. Don't make more of it please.

3. Many people don't have the means to buy books, some websites like many times send the material for free. ask others for help, Begin with learning who God is first. His Attributes and Nature. Its easy to begin with the gospels but make sure you read the Old Testament. Pray before you start with a sincere heart. Believe with faith when you read and be open minded with God so that He can reveal His word to you. Go slow and read each passage in its whole context, and God will reveal His Word.

You cant tell me that those people that I worshiped with who professed Christ arent Christian because that they cant read the bible, much less the KJV-which seems to be much venerated on this site. 2. Many times when we just like someone we use them, take advantage of them. Use them when we feel like we need something without regards to how it hurts the other person. Start showing you love, ask Him to forgive you for not giving Him more then you have. Look at your lives and see what you have done wrong in your relationship with God. Many people are busy but the time we spend on movies and programs just shows how much we love Christ.
---lupe2618 on 8/18/05

Doesn't anyone agree that when you fall in love you would do anything to learn about the other person? Didn't you just want to talk to that person all day long? Didn't you want to be closer to that person? You would sleep and dream of that person. How much more should we feel for loving Christ? That love should be moving us to be closer to Him. To not just spend a minute but hours with Him. Now that is true love. When someone doesn't love but just likes someone, they will not spend the time at all.

People have given all kinds of excuses. "I don't understand the King James." There are plenty of good translations."Idon't have time." Answer, you can get the Bible on tape or CD and listen you drive to work. "I don't understand it! You are right, they are lazy. They will hear someone else and believe what they are told. They forget to test everything to Scripture to see if its true what they are learning. I think many times people don't know where to start. I used to try to read through the Bible at Genesis and would slow down somewhere around Chronicles. It may be effective for some people to start with the New Testament, or the book of John. I made it through Chronicles eventually, and now read the Bible all the way through each year, but sometimes I skip around in the order I read the books. Reading the Bible is so key to Christianity this is the book we say we believe in, so we should read it.
---annie on 8/17/05

Many reasons. It is too much work to pick up a bible and flip over pages to read. (for some). Some get a better explantion if someone else reads it to them, or some can't read, some just don't have the knowledge of the word, even though it maybe simple to us, it could be complacated for them.
