Who Gives Me Unclean Thoughts

Does satan and his demons put unclean thoughts in ones head or can unclean thoughts be created by our own subconscence from having a sinful nature?

Does it matter? What matters to me is that I have the Holy Spirit of God living in me, and He is more powerful than Satan, the demons, or my subconscience. Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world.

Becca, I had the same question as a young Believer. 'How could I have horrible thoughts even in the middle of a Bible study?!' Bruce5656 showed us that it's just our own sinful flesh/worldly influences. Paul himself battled with this (see Romans 7) probably with fewer sinful influences than we have today! Spending more time in the Word than the world trains our minds, just as habitually doing the right thing keeps us from sinning against others. But the war continues unitl we find true rest in heaven.

We all have unclean thoughts---that is our nature as humans. As soon as the thought appears in your mind, you should mentally erase it, as if it were on a chalkboard. The same with thoughts of irrational fear and worry. As Barney always said, "Nip it in the bud!" Then pray and ask God to replace them with spiritual thoughts.

Satan can influence your thoughts, but NOT internally (directly in your head).

The primary source of temptation is OUR OWN LUSTS (desires).James 1:14, "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed."
---Bruce5656 on 9/8/05

The secondary source EXTERNAL, through the eyes, ears etc. When we say "Satan tempts" I do not think it is Satan personally. 1 John 4:4, "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." After all, he is one creature and there are many many millions Christians.
---Bruce5656 on 9/8/05

When Christians express the concept that Satan (personally) has been on their case I wonder how it is that of all the millions of Christians, that THEY rate personal attention from Satan, one on one.

Consider that, during the Millennial Reign of Christ, while Satan is bound in the pit and unable to influence humanity directly, people will still rebel against Christ. Who will they blame it on then?
---Bruce5656 on 9/8/05

Satan's INFLUENCE, however, is EVERWHERE in this wicked world. Jesus referred to him as the prince of this world on several occasions. After all these millennia of Satans influence on earth (starting in Eden when he tempted Eve face to face EXTERNALY) society is polluted with secularism, humanism, hedonism, and many other isms. In short this is a sinful, wicked world.

No wonder we are instructed: Philippians 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise`, think on these things."

2 Corinthians 10:1-6 Spiritual War
1-2 Warning
3.For though we walk in the flesh we must not war according to the flesh
4... the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.
5... casting down arguments & every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God bringing every thought into capitivity 2 the obedience of Christ
6. & being ready 2 punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

1 Corinthians 3:1-4
1..... I, brethren, could not speak 2 you as 2 spiritual people but as 2 carnal, as 2 babes in Christ,
2. I fed you with milk & not with solid food: 4 until now you were not able 2 recieve it, & even now you are still not able.
3. But you are still carnal. 4 where there is envy, strife, & divisions among you, are you not carnal & behaving like mere men?
4. 4 when 1 says, "I am of Paul," & another, "I am of Apollos," are you not carnal?

Romans 8:1-11 Free from indwelling sin
5.....those who live according 2 the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according 2 the Spirit, the things of the Spirit
6..... to be carnally minded is death but 2 be spiritually minded is life & peace.
7..... the carnal mind is enmity against God:it is not subject 2 the law of God nor indeed can be.
8.....those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9..... If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

Romans 7:13-25
..we know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin.
18.For I know that in me (that is the flesh) nothing good dwells; 4 to will is present with me, but how 2 perform what is good I do not find
19 For the good that I will 2 do, I do not do, but the evil I will not 2 do, that I practice

24. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death.
25. I thank God -through Jesus Christ our Lord. ....mind serves law but flesh serve sin

Yes I totaly agree, with You who ever You are.
You're so right it's really kind of scary.
---amand8788 on 9/8/05

The human flesh is sinful. The flesh always prefers the easy, and pleasureable things. That is why God in 1 Timothy 2:15 tells to study. Acts 17:11, the people at Berea studied the scriptures daily. Only by constant study of the scriptures, and allowing Christ to come into you and work through you, can you learn to with stand the sinful fleah. God has given us the power to over come, and Christ has given us the freedom.

You are in the world, but not of the world.

Most of us have learned things all our lives that are "unclean." We can't really help it that much, were not only surrounded but bombarded by shameless perversion and evil.

Your mind is part of the battle of the flesh.
Do a word search on "mind" in the New Testament, check out all the references.

The Devil may have a bit of influence but ultimately control is ours.
