What Do You Christians Believe

You are on a train and a young girl sits next to you. She asks about the fish brooch you wear and you tell her you're a Christian. She is getting off at the next stop but asks "What do Christians believe?" What do you say in the time allowed, bearing in mind you might never see her again?

Yes in bodily form, A Glorified body. Just like when He came into the room unto them with closed doors. John 20 v 19.
---Lawrence on 9/13/10

Jesus is NOT invisible.

Your uncle who lives half way around the world is not invisible, but is in bodily form where you cannot see him.

We know that Jesus is in heaven preparing a place for his people. He returns to the earth the same way he left - in bodily form. The miracles which happen today come from the Father through a christian in the name of Jesus just as the miracles that Jesus performed was from the Father. Jesus couldn't perform the miracles by himself, but from the Father.
---Steveng on 9/11/10

Jesus is invisible, this we can all most certainly agree on, however, there are times when He just doesn't seen too invisible. And of course, He is more alive that you or I.
---catherine on 9/11/10

Jesus is the invisible One who makes all the good things happen, and He wants us to love everyone. And Jesus died for our sins so we can be forgiven. And there's always more to find out about this. God bless you.
---Bill_bila5659 on 9/11/10

I might also ask her a question. Do you need the living God to help you in everyday affairs? Because, I tell you miss this world is in a lot of messes, and a lot of trouble Cabut, and it's because it does not have the living God.
---catherine on 9/10/10

You don't talk about Jesus.

You don't talk about the commandments.

These two subjects would take too long to describe during a brief encounter.

Have you not taken the example of the brief encouter Jesus had with the woman at the well? John 4

He used living water as a simile for regular drinking water. What would you say on the train?

"I know a train that will take you to the Kingdom of God."

larry -// Being a Christian is principally about relationship with the true and living God and the fellowship of his sufferings.

Very true and there are many especially in the so-called Christian cults that believe they are genuine Christians but really are not.

You can also spot a pseudo-Christian as all too often they are the type that are hung up on religious observances such as dietary laws or special holy days despite what is clearly evident in Scripture.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith, prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
---leej on 9/9/10

Its too simple to just say we believe in Jesus as do the devil and demons. Its more about who we know and that is where we are differ from religion. Being a Christian is principally about relationship with the true and living God and the fellowship of his sufferings.
We know Jesus (meaning we obey him) and he is WHY we believe.
---larry on 9/9/10

You simply tell her that Jesus is the one who God sent into the world that anyone who believes in Him will be saved unto eternal life, that one may come to know Him in a personal way simply by inviting Him into your life.

Unfortunately there are those who will tell you that you must obey the commandments in order to be saved. However Scripture is very plain that salvation is a gift, not something one earns. Eph. 2:8-10

It is truly impossible for one to obey all the laws of God all the time sufficiently enough to merit salvation.

Those who advocate a works salvation really do not understand that Jesus is to be our Savior, that salvation is from Him not from ourselves.

frances -

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

The problem here is she may not even know what the commandments are and since it does not point to Jesus being the Savior, your reply is basically one of ethical works for salvation (=filty rags).

Many have experienced salvation in Christ and that without knowing too much about Christ or the Bible. He saves those who believe in Him and will accepts Him into their lives.John 1:12.

They do not have to be good little boys /girls or even Seventh Day Adventists.

This if often the problem with the so-called Christian cults.
---leej on 9/9/10

What do you say in the time allowed, bearing in mind you might never see her again?

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here [are] they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

I would tell her from personal testimony that Jesus is our King & Saviour. He is our spiritual brother that his father, OUR father sent to earth to send the good news(gospel) & save us taking our Sin upon him. In order to be part of this everlasting spiritual family we must confess with our mouth that Jesus is theChrist & HE is the only way to his fathers kingdom. then if they want ot countinue if there is time before the next stop I would give a quick prayer that God guides her to a good bible believing congregation that is based in Sound Doctrine & get baptized.
---Candice on 9/8/10

All that it means, my friend is--- you must be born-again--raised from the dead..."What does that mean", she may asked? I would say, "You'll know, when the living God comes to you". Have a good day.+
---catherine on 9/8/10

i would try to keep my mouth shut, so the Spirit can do the talking.
---aka on 9/8/10

This is a wonderful question. I would tell her what the Scripture says. I would ask her if she wants to pray about her salvation. If and when she said yes, I would lead her in a sinner's prayer, in which she would call on the Lord Jesus Christ to save her soul. I would then prove to her by the Word of God that she is saved.
---mima on 9/8/10

God does have only One salvation plan, Acts 2 v 38.

The devil 2nd.Cor.11 v's 14 - 15 has salvation plans beginning with the trin rcc then her offspring daughters trin churches, & the devil makes people think it is God.

I usually would plant the seed, the same seed that Jesus and the apostles preached. The seed is the gospel - the Kingdom of God. Unless, of course, the Holy Spirit has something else for me to say at that particular time.

Then I would give that person my personal card (like a business card, but having my personal information on it), giving that person a chance to contact me in the future, and allow the Holy Spirit to nuture that seed.

Even though I may not know that person's name, God surely does when I pray about that person.
---Steveng on 9/7/10

It's unfortunate that you assert boldly such a superficial reading of the bible. You seem to think there is only one meaning of the word saved, one meaning of forgiveness, etc. Also, are we really supposed to learn our doctrine only from the historical writings? I guess the Jews read 2Kings to solidify their understanding of the Law? Not Quite. Doctrine should be developed from those writings that were written for that purpose. And Acts is not one of them, sorry.
---james on 9/7/10

True born again believers Are saved with The One & Only salvation of God Mark 16 v 16, Acts 2 v's 37 - 38 which Fulfills Matt.28 v's 19 - 20. The Same as The Early Church.

---Lawrence on 9/7/10

It is even harder when you do not speak the language of the country you are in and only understand basic questions. So I think I would say that I believed the Bible (and learn the word for Bible in the foreign language). That should answer most of their questions and they know that all they need do is borrow a Bible from a library which would I think be quite easy.

Call upon the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and He will save you.

Call upon the Name of Jesus when the bully or an attacker is coming at you, CALL ON "JESUS"!

When you don't know how to pray, say JESUS.

When you're fearful, call on JESUS.

That's what I would tell anyone, young or old.
---Cindy on 3/19/08

Two minutes...

Call upon The Name above every name, Jesus Christ, He will save you.

Ask Him and He will save you.

Stock market falling, bottom falling out of 401K's worth, call upon the Name of Jesus.

Can't sleep at night, too fearful to think, mind drawing a blank - call out to Jesus.
World falling apart before your eyes, His Name, sound of His Name will bring true peace into your heart.
Jesus is all you need to save someone's life from perishing.
---Cindy on 3/19/08

You should carry tracts with you at all times. This is why I love tracts so much. They tell the story and you can be in another state. The tracts can also help the person with the Prayer of Salvation,as well. The tracts have done what they were designed to do and all the Glory goes to the Lord and you have possibly, won a soul to Christ. You also receive a star in your own crown. Praise God.There is going to be a great gathering of the saints one day. I can't wait to receive my crown, as well.
---Robyn on 3/19/08

christians do believe that the messiah had already came in first century and passed carried all our sins according to the profecies and who ever belied in his name and follows him shall have everlasting life with him.

There are some super answers amongst these. Thank you all so much. Three I particularly like, 'give her the brooch' 'ask for her email address to keep in touch' and 'give her a New Testament'. On my next train journey there will be more than a change of clothing in my overnight bag.
---Xanthi on 9/23/05

I would tell her that I can only speak for myself and not others. But I believe that God sent his only son so I could be saved. He died for me so I wouldn't have to. Once was enough. And that through him all things are possible and whatever I need him to be that is just what he is. If I need a mother, he is that, father he is that too. Etc.

James, That's a great idea! Usually I take tracts when I go out and witness. I will look into getting small New testiments in bulk.
Thank you and God bless you, brother!
---John on 9/22/05

That's why i keep a New Testament with me wherever i go, so i can give it away to anyone who asks about my faith.
---James on 9/22/05

Tell her in a nutshell that Jesus is the Son of God. We are all sinners headed for hell. but Jesus came to earth, died for our sins so that we do not have to go to hell but can live for all eternity in heaven with him. all it takes if being genuinely sorry for our sins and telling God so. Asking for forgiveness and asking Jesus to come live in our heart and direct our life.
Ask for her email address etc so you can tell her more

I would give the girl the brooch explaining that it is my only one and it means the world to me but I would like give it to her as a gift. Just like how God loved her so much that he gave his only son Jesus. I would tell her that if she also accepts the gift of salvation by believing in Jesus, she will know that He will be with her and she will belong to Him forever.
---ralph7477 on 9/22/05

That Jesus died for our sins so we can have eternal life in heaven, that salvation is by grace - only. That being a "good person," being a decent citizen, making moral choices, and doing good things for others will never be enough to get into heaven. That even though we're in this world, Christians are not OF this world... that our permanent home awaits us and the Father is waiting with open arms to welcome us. And that anyone can have the gift of salvation that wants it.
---Marilee on 9/22/05

I would tell her that christians believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Died and rouse again. That He carried all my burdens and now i am free indeed.
---ndagire_Hadija_K. on 9/22/05

I believe that Jesus is Lord, and that he died on the cross for our sins so that we would not die but have everlasting life with him, and that I represent him wherever I go as a living sacrifice.

Simply, I believe that there is a God in Heaven. That he wants to always be with him in heaven, but he does not like sin, (imperfection). So he sent his only Son to pay the debt that we owed for our sins, (imperfections). Also that it is a gift from God, and not something we have to work for, He freely gives it to us, if we believe it and accept it. Of course, being a child I would explain some of the big words to them so they will have a complete understanding.
---geraa7578 on 9/22/05

Jesus is the prophesied Savior for mankind. God in human flesh who came to pay the penalty for all sin for all who receive Him as their personal Savior. The Bible is without error, God's Word and truth...Read it. In it you will find the LOVE of God revealed in Christ for you. Confess your need for salvation, Claim it and find peace for your life and eternal soul security.
---Eloia_N_KS on 9/22/05

I would probably quote John 3:16.
