Signs And Wonders For Today

My husband, a "baby" Christian, asked me a very good question the other day. Our pastor was speaking on the signs and wonders that should follow Christians. Will we do the things that Christ did and greater? Why doesn't he see miracles today?

"Why doesn't he see miracles today"?

Salvation IS a Miracle. The New Birth IS the greatest Miracle there is.
---kathr4453 on 6/16/08

Jesus said,"Flesh is flesh, and Spirit is spirit". Flesh might have some degree of natural "power", but Scripturally speaking "Flesh" does not have any power in the Kingdom of God. Spirit, on the other hand is the power in the Kingdom of God. Signs and wonders only come from God. It is not I (natural man) that lives but Christ in me the hope of Glory. If indeed we are following after God. Signs and wonders originate with God not us, filtered through us.
---Jim on 6/16/08

Well I just think that it is prideful to believe we have any power of our own. I can do all things, sure.........through Christ who strengthens me.

If we lose sight of where our power comes from...well...pride comes before the fall.
---Todd1 on 6/16/08

Todd1: "Christians do not have "unlimited" power from God, but God works thru us when *He* chooses."

Then you are calling Jesus a liar. What do you suppose telling that mountain what to do?
---Steveng on 6/15/08

The problem lies in unbelief. Much of what we think is "Christian" today is false. At least in the U.S. If you go to third world countries, you will see many very apparent miracles. We need to have the faith of a child.:)
---jody on 6/14/08

Steveng, Christians do not have "unlimited" power from God, but God works thru us when *He* chooses. Otherwise, why wouldn't people with the gift of healing go to every children's hospital and cure all the sick boys and girls? Why didn't the apostles raise everyone from the dead (Steven was stoned, etc) or heal each other (Paul's thorn in the flesh). Biblical facts reveal a situation where God decides when and what types of miracles to perform and who, if anyone, to perform them thru. :-)
---Todd1 on 6/13/08

I do believe that we are supposed to do what Jesus did..He said we should. I think that we do not see them because there is a huge body of Christ that just plain does not teach or believe this way. There was a time in the bible when Jesus could not do a miracle and it was because of the unbelief in the town. It did not pass say that it has is one that says that has one scripture to verify this.

frances008: "Signs and wonders finished when the last apostle - John - died."

On the contrary, performing miracles greater than Jesus has not ended. It continues even today, but far and few between. This is because today's Christians are weak in the faith. Ask 200,000 while walking the street to heal that person in the wheel chair. One in 200,000 will do it or at least give it a try. The other 199,999 will quickly lose their confidence in God to perform such a feat.
---Steveng on 6/12/08

Todd1: "I think God's power is ...,"

All Christians are commanded to go out into the world to perform miracles to glorify God. We don't need permission because it's already given in the New Testament. Prophesy, healings, and other miracles are proof God exists and, therefore, the person being healed, and the persons around him, will praise God. Read the Bible to find what Jesus said about the purpose of healings and miracles.

frances008: "As long as a Christian is walking with the Lord, prayer should be enough."

Don't only be hearers of the Word, but doers. Christians are to go out into the world and do greater miracles than Jesus. He says so himself. Anything is possible when you have the Holy Spirit in you. Not performing miracles is caused by weak faith. It's this waek faith that will bring on the great falling away from the faith during the tribulation.
---Steveng on 6/12/08

Mima, that sounds like the Holy Spirit. Keep up the great work. Signs and wonders finished when the last apostle - John - died. Their works were the fulfillment of Jesus's prophecy. I would not go around expecting miracles done through Christians. However, prayer will work if you need anything. As long as a Christian is walking with the Lord, prayer should be enough.
---frances008 on 6/11/08

Both Tuesday and yesterday, while on the street witnessing people have come up to me and said, what are you doing here? I tell them I'm witnessing about the Lord, they look very shocked and surprised and then say. Something told me to come over here, but I had no idea it was about salvation. Both prayed with me and received the Lord Jesus Christ. I believe this might be signs and wonders.
---Mima on 6/11/08

I think God's power is displayed in miracles mostly when He is trying to accomplish a specific task, such as spreading the gospel through the early church. When God has another specific work, and we experience an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, I think we'll start to see more miracles. There are probably some miracles going on in various parts of the world that we just dont hear about. :-)

Ken: "Knowledge of scripture (or the lack of it) is not a measure of someones faith. Even Satan knows scripture."

The Bible is the history of God's relationship with his people. Reading the Bible is God's resume. The more we read, the better our knowledge of God. At this point, Christians only have knowledge. Our relationship with God becomes real, just as real as your and your earthly friend.Your best friend didn't happen in just one day, did it? Your relationship grew over time.
---Steveng on 6/10/08

Ken: "Knowledge of scripture (or the lack of it) is not a measure of someones faith. Even Satan knows scripture."

Do you know the complete story of a two hundred page novel just by reading pages 50, 100, 150 and 200? Do you know a person by being with him five inconsecutive days in ten years? Can you truly know God by reading a verse here and a verse there and those same verses over and over? Today's Christians relearn the birth of Christ for thirty days each year.
---Steveng on 6/10/08

Forgiveness & salvation come by faith, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit allows us to understand scripture so we may gather the wisdom and knowledge of God from it. God reveals Himself one way to one person, and another way to someone else. Knowledge of scripture (or the lack of it) is not a measure of someones faith. Even Satan knows scripture.

Today's world is filled with weak Christians knowing only the fraction of what is in the Bible - superficial Christians having only a fraction of the faith needed to know the signs and wonders. If the world is truly filled with strong Christians, the world will see Christians performing miracles greater than Jesus.

Weak Christians are the reason of the great falling away from the faith during the tribulation.

1 Corinthians 12:10, 11
No matter what gift(s) a person has, each gift is given by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit decides which gifts each one of us should have. We are responsible to use and sharpen our gifts, but we can take no credit for what God has freely given us.

Gideon, in Judges 6 verse 13, asks this very same question. Notice the answer the Lord gave him and then note Gideon's response. Gideon has trouble grasping who God has created him to be (was hiding in the clefts of the mountains like a chicken) and the Lord comes along and calls him a mighty man of valor. What???? That's because He sees who He has created us to be. We tend to look at our own strength and abilities.

Ummmm, I happen to see miracles every single day! Yesterday my father went missing, he has dimensia. prayed for a miracle. The miracle came when a loving Christian women saved my father from being hit by a car as he fell onto a roadway.
I see miracles every day in my son'e eyes and everytime I get into my car and have a safe trip somewhere. Miricles are all around us all the time! When was last time you had a near accident but where spared? Is miracle

God confirms HIS WORD with signs and wonders and miracles, preach his word and he will confirm it, those not preaching his word say you are cursed, you have no faith, always passing the buck, blaming those who need something from God, Who will believe the report of the Lord? God will do exceedingly and abundantly above all you ask or think, to glorify his Son, speak his word and not yours, or some mans doctrine, lay your mind down and all you believe and God will replace it with the mind of Christ.

YES signs & wonders ARE for today, and Jesus has given us authority to do what He did & greater. Many Christians don't believe that these things are for today, only for the disciples of Jesus's day. Many Christians are also scared about how society will label them if they do signs & wonders - they are afaid of being labeled a crazy person or a Jesus Freak. This is why you don't see a lot of signs & wonders today.

Mark 16:15-18 gives a list of things that WILL be seen. Luther believed that it was only for the Apostolic Fathers, however they still persist to this day.

Yes, we still cast out devils, lay hands on the sick, and raise the dead, etc. However, He grants these abilities to prove to non-believers of His power.

After every exorcism that He has me personally do in His name the people that were possessed always make confession of Christ.

5. These kind of teaching is very dangerous for the church, because Scripture tells us that false miracles, extremely believing ones, will be a primary tool for Satan in the end times. As Jesus said in Matthew 24:24,25, "False Christ's and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect." Then He added, knowing that many would ignore the warning, "Behold, I have told you in advance"

4. Some of the Third Wavers believe that unbelievers must experience the miraculous to be brought to full faith. Merely preaching the Gospel of God, they believe, will not reach the world for Christ. Most people will not believe without seeing miracles, they say, and who do will be inadequately converted, and therefore stuck in thier spiritual growth. I believe God is at work in our life and does answer prayer, for He has healed Eloy, and many others. His work of miracles are life lasting.

3. Now, how about signs and wonders? Right now there's a movement called, The Third Wave. They are devotees that believe that fantastic signs and wonders demonstrate the genuineness of their movement. Miraculous phenomena, is the very heart of their movement. Third Wavers are persuaded that miracles, visions, prophecies, and healings are essential supplements to the gospel. They view Christianity without those things as impotent, adulterated by the western, materialistic mind.

2. Providences or acts by God, are sometimes confuse with miracles. When a mother senses something wrong in an adjoining room and investigates just in time to stop her toddler from poking a paper clip into the elctrical outlet. That is an act of providence, Answers to prayers or acts of providences, Determining the period of human life is a providence. Overruling wicked designs for good, is a providence. Most biblical miracles happened in three relatively brief periods of Bible history:
---Lupe2618 on 9/29/05

Sister Crystal, I won't say that your husband is any different then most Christians. I will say that many have miracles and providences of God confused. A miracle is an extraordinary event brought by God through humans, it's an even that cannot be explained by natural forces. Miracles are always designed to authenticate the human instrument God has chosen to declare a specific revelation to those that witness the miracle.
---Lupe2618 on 9/29/05

Tsuanne, you're mostly correct. Many people (including some "baby Christians" don't see miracles because they're looking for the dramatic, not the simple everyday miracles others can see (such as birds, air, life, nature).

Expectation is the breeding ground of miracles. Most people do not see miracles because they live carnal lives. God will not operate in an atmosphere of doubt and unbelief. We cannot operate in God's anointing and live unholy lives. If we seek more the miracle worker than the miracle we will see more miracles.
---Tsuanne on 9/29/05

The reason he doesn`t see the miracles has to do with his eyes not because they are not a person grows spiritually they will start seeing spiritually........a carnal person sees only the carnal but a spiritual person sees spiritually.....every person grows at their own pace...the key is growth, fast or slow ,encourage him to continually grow and he will see at GOD`S appointed time.

Wow! I've loved your answers! I believe that I serve an awesome God who does what He will when He wills it. There ARE miracles in every day life. However, my husband is looking for "signs," that I really don't need to see in order to believe. RED FLAG!! But, I must confess, I can't always answer his questions either...

Rev Herb,

What is the sign of Jonas??
---Crystal on 9/28/05

I have seen and experienced miracles all my life, almost from the time I can remember. From; earache being healed to a man brought back to life.It doesn't have to be a big healing miracle , but can be anything you pray for to change the course of events,or protect someone, and God answers. As Shira said, even when conditions are found unexpectedly, which saves a persons life.Children on earth who doctors told the mother she shouldn't be able to conceive.People alive who were dying. All miracles.

A friend was telling me the night before last of a man he knows in Tracadie, New Brunswick, Canada, who had lung cancer. He was Catholic and had disowned his son for being a Christian. His other children offered prayers through the church to no avail. His Christian son (now a pastor) came home to visit him and prayed for him. When he went back to the doctor for examination THERE IS NO MORE CANCER! Praise the Lord.

Faith produces miracles. God says, believe, and then you will see; but man says, let me see, and then i will believe. Documented miracles have been done to me, and through me. And likewise supernatural miracles have also happened to multitudes of other people.

Matthew 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

there are miracles everyday. It was a miracle the drs found I had cancer of the thyroid. They were doing an x-ray for upper respertory infection. My brother got strangled on a piece of meat and they found he had stomach cancer. My sister had minor outpatient surgery, but her heart quit beating and they found she needed a new heart valve. My husband was at deaths door in 1979 but God healed him. If all the above isn't miracles, then show me why not.

Maybe he is in the wrong place, I have seen and experienced many! God is still alive and well and still working His miracles. He healed me of cancer when the drs said I needed a hysterectomy, and 3 years later I was pregnant with my son, he was an ectopic pregnancy and God healed that. I have seen many other miracles, for others and for myself. Pray for God to send you where you can see His awesomeness.

Besides all that, there is more than just seeing signs and wonders. We are to be signs and wonders and the greatest miracle, the greatest wonder of them all is being born again.
