Pastors that have control issues need to read about Jesus girding himself with a towel, and washing the deciples feet - MOST LEADERS WILL SUBMIT UPWARDS, BUT NEVER "DOWNWARDS...BECAUSE OF PRIDE IN THEM !!!!!!They want to be Lords.
---Rick on 7/12/10

Control issues. That is a usable description. There is one in training/practicing here.

Jeremiah 23:1
Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Jeremiah 23:2
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people, Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
---Trav on 7/13/10

THE BIBLE ANSWER !!!!!! _ But I want you to understand the Christ is the Head (covering)of every man, and the mand is the head of his wife, and God is the head of Christ. PRETTY SIMPLE. Pastors that have control issues need to read about Jesus girding himself with a towel, and washing the deciples feet - their actually servants ....(oops!!) NOT LORDS !! -
most have forgot that. Also - were supposed to submit to one another in love.

An judged by attempts at teaching.

Matthew 15:9
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Mark 14:49
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.
1 Corinthians 14:35
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
---Trav on 2/28/10

Mat 23:8-9
(8) But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.
(9) And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.

2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

su bmit to one anotheretc.
the word is full of advice about spiritual covering. however the word CHURCH is not used, yet the idea is strongly apparent in the New testament. try to do a wordstudie about submittion, and you'l find out that there is always a spiritual covering.
---Andy on 4/6/09

I have never been able to find scripture in the New Testement that spefically says we need to be under a "Church" covering..but I do believe that its important to be under the "teaching" or "Pastoral" care of a 5 fold ministry...because that is what the Lord put them there teach and build up the body of Christ
---gentle_breeze on 3/31/09

God our Father wants a PERSONAL relationship with you through Jesus Christ our Mediator(1Tim 2v5). We cannot have a relationship with God via a human 'proxy'. Yes, we should have people praying for us and our ministry and yes we should submit ourselves to a 'support group' where we can share faults and fears (not sins).
So, our only valid 'spiritual covering' is Jesus Christ whereas accountability results from relationships with trusted friends\advisors who live according to the Word of God and seek counsel from the Holy Spirit.

Unfortunately, too many spiritual concepts are based on good ideas and misunderstandings and I think this is one of them. Covering is mentioned in the bible in terms of a physical head covering, not a spiritual covering of authority and submission.

It sounds like a lovely theology that each individual or church should be spiritually 'covered' to ensure that they are not out on a limb, setting themselves up for the enemy to steal kill and destroy but the truth of the word is that we haven't been given a spirit of fear, the enemy is disarmed and defeated, if we merely resist the devil he will flee and we have been given authority over him. If we all understood this, we wouldn't need to prop up our fear with a message of 'covering'!

question should be "is the 20th century idea of ministry, from the word of god." NO!Jesus said,"this is the work of GOD, that you should believe on HIM whom HE has sent".We are ministers of reconciliation to the lost wherever/whenever opportunity arises if we walk in the spirit of GOD. No title/no degree/no monetary compensation...just a record in heaven,of our works done in the name of Jesus. Paul told the elders in acts to follow his example, he worked with his own hands day & night so he would not be chargable to anyone & preached the word also, no love offerings or monthly salary,he supported himself & exspected those who followed to do the same not preaching the word of GOD for money.
---rick on 8/24/08

Paul said to follow him as he followed Christ...I have been in the situation, the pastor was in sin, trying to blame his wife for it. I came to the conclusion, we are to submit to each other, and the pastor is to have a group of ppl he is accountable to. Personally I do not follow any one person. I have the understanding the we all have a "pulpit" not always in the church on the platform...and our call is to share the word of God...the pastor, no where in scripture is to be a ruler over a body of ppl. The bible clearly teaches a "team leadership" the one man directing the church is a mans ego trip deal...nothing more
---Robin on 8/24/08

I think if you are in the position of a pastor or missionary that you definetly must have a spiritual covering and guidiance. We all need to be accountable to someone although ultimately we are accountable to GOD.One on one ministry of course is diffirent although you should check out the witnessing with scripture.

It depends on who is claiming to be your "spiritual covering". I mean, we have people who promote "spiritual covering", but who are not doing it right, and so this can make spiritual covering look bad. But Jesus gives us spiritual covering, *Himself*, while we obey Him.

And any real Christian friend or pastor will cover for you, without advertising this. But ones want to be worshiped and depended on. So, they say you need them, *including doing what they say*, so you can have them covering for you > this is not freely giving > "Freely you have received, freely give." (in Matthew 10:8) "nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:3)

***Is a "spiritual covering" needed for a person to have a ministry?****

Is there a verse that states one must have a spiritual covering to have a ministry?

Obviously we haven't read the bible.

EVERY Born Again Christian has a MINISTRY, and you were GIFTED by Jesus Christ for ministry.

Now if you are being taught that some spiritual mantel needs to pass to you, or you need the votes of popular opinion, and kootos in your next best seller from mere men are not in ministry at are in the world, with worldly minded people.

Other true members of the Body who will be nourished up by your GIFT will KNOW if you are called of God, or a self promoting Balaam.
---kathr4453 on 8/23/08

Mima, I'm not sure what "spiritual covering" you are referring to, but, all christians have the covering of Jesus Christ. I believe anyone involved in ministry should have some form of accountability, to ensure that they don't fall into temptation and ruin. This is a matter that really needs addressing in today's society because of all the "easy-believism" being preached today. God protect us from ourselves and outside influences contrary to His word.

No. Christ Commands the Christian's ministry, and not any other clay. Flesh says, "Give us a leader like the other nations have round about". "They set up kings for themselves, but not by me says the Lord."
---Eloy on 8/23/08

I believe the Sacrificial Blood of Christ is to be an individuals covering.

Parents are to be the umbrella (covering) of their children.

Too many times I have heard too many people tell others they are someones covering (which is a lie) and that you can only reach GOD through them.
---Rob on 8/22/08

This is an issue a lot of Christians are dealing with. I believe that every true Christian tuely wants to obey God and His Bible totally and completely. When it comes to spiritual authority, it's not that they don't want to submit to authority but rather they want to submit to the right authority. How can a "pastor" require people to submit to him if he is not submitted to God? The real questions that need addressing are who is true and who is false (pastors) and are Christians required to submit to or under a false teacher or ministry.
---Michael on 8/22/08

Yes, I do believe it is. When we have someone praying over us, interceding for us as we go out in battle it gives us protection. The person interceding may see what the person they are interceding for doesn't see. Every pastor has a pastor over him or her as a spiritual covering.

If you can not submit to your parents you will not submit to your school teachers. If you can not submit to your school teachers you will not submit tu your boss. If you can not submit to your boss you will not submit to your Pastor.
In each of these instances PRIDE is the prvailing factor in preventing submission. Submission to spiritual authority brings about personal accountablity and covering.
---Pastor_Rudy on 5/17/07

Spiritual covering. Yes, What is it? If you are talking about the Holy Spirit filling your life, then the answer is, absolutely.
---catherine on 3/29/07

Do you think God is flesh and blood? HIGH SPIRITUALITY is what our Christian faith is all about. Sure a mininstry can go with out a spiritual covering, but watch out for what will happen to you if it is done. Read Timothy, and Ephesians.
---Cynthia_1 on 3/29/07

The head of every man is Christ & the head of every woman is the man & the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, dishonors his head. Every woman that does so without her head covered dishonors her head. A man should not cover His head for he is the image & glory of God, just as the woman is the glory of man. Yet there is no distinction made between the man & the woman in the Lord, for in Christ there is neither male nor female. 1Cor.11:3-12>Gal.3:28

God is our cover and we are to be each other's cover in Love.

33: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. 34: And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question."
---Nana on 3/29/07

I ask anyone who says yes that a spiritual covering is needed for any believer (other than Christ) to provide scripture to uphold that as truth. The only Spiritual Covering for any believer is Christ not a man. Most who have theories were taught this and have so scriptural founding, it is error. Give scripture that is rightly divided and let me know! Most of you heard that from some leader and is used for manipulative purposes and thus takes the believer back in bondage when Christ have made us free.
---Lee on 3/28/07

Most definately. If you read the Word, many man of God (if not all) had a covering. Moses had Jethro, Elisha had Elijah, the disciples had Jesus, Timothy had Paul (Paul even addressed Timothy as his spiritual son), just to name a few. All these coverings mentored, corrected, admonished, prayed for, etc. their spiritual sons. Our generation is no different. In fact, in my opinion, we need GODLY spiritual coverings now more than ever.

The key word here is Spirit...A person in ministry should be filled with the Holy Spirit.
---Lynn on 12/14/05

....they want to run out with a bible and do their own thing, preach their own way, with no accountability or no one telling them what to do. That's rebellion and pride. And we know what the word says about that. How can someone instruct, teach, or correct anyone else when they refuse to be instructed, taught, or corrected?
---Pastors_wife on 12/13/05

Wrong. A spiritual covering is not someone YOU place yourSELF under. It is someone GOD places over you. There's too many "self-proclaimed" prophets and preachers running around today, causing a LOT of confusion in the body of Christ. EVERYONE should have a Pastor- a mentor, a "spiritual father", to pray for and with them, council them, encourage them, and even sometimes correct them- Aaaah, THAT'S where we run into a lot of the problem- nobody wants to be corrected these days.....

mima, If you are talking about accountability, I think it is a good thing.

Jesus Christ is our ONLY spiritual covering. None other will fit us for God's kingdom. Sin must be attoned for...and ONLY Christ can do that since HE alone was sinless.

Bruce- A spiritual covering would be placing yourself and your ministy under a pastor, spirital Leader, a certain denomination, or in other words letting someone ( a man) judge your ministry.---mima12/13/2005
