A Prophet At My Church

If a so called "prophet" comes to your church and gives you a personal prophesy, is it to be believed?

Moderator - Let the prophets judge the prophets. Those that have the Gift of Discernment in your local Body should be able to cut to the chase.

Catherine: When Christ opens a door - HE will lead the willing servant to the room (church/pastor) the door is attached to. Yes it is true, unhealthy (legalistic, immature) Pastors may 'throw the prophets out', though I encourage those who know they move in this gift (by the way, Prophets are called and SENT BY GOD)to press into the leading of the Holy Spirit - watch Him take you to the right God appointment!!!!
---Prodigal24 on 6/8/07

No unsaved preacher is going to allow a God called prophet inside the door if they know that you are one. So forget it.

After reading the comments: yes, very important that it lines up with the Word, edifys (person/church), comforts (can be a word in due season unique to an individual/church) exhortation (bring counsel, prompt, motivate, encouragement) - Prophets (mature ones) walk in much fruit, though at times they may seem harsh (speaking truth in love), 'Budding Prophets' (immature - well thats another story - pride, attention drawn to them, bluntness are mostly a great weakness until they mature)
---Prodigal24 on 6/7/07

True Prophets are all differently motivated - however here are some of their sure sign characteristics - passionate, mercy motivated, GENEROUS, hospitality, evangelistic, compassionate, speak truth (usually unpalatable for the hearer), discerning, gifts of wisdom/knowlege, like being alone with God, when they pray - it pierces hearts (the Word - two edged sword) ALWAYS direct others to Christ (repentance) not themselves, NEED healthy balanced Pastors, unpopular, invoke hostility (very strong annointing)
---Prodigal24 on 6/7/07

they are kind, they see potential in others, LOATE injustice (usually this will motivate passion in their words), not interested in pleasing others for they KNOW God and only care to obey His leading, Pastors with Prophet gifts usually have a choice - speak truth or want to be liked - you cant be both - when Prophets are matured and balanced they are a great blessing to any church.
---Prodigal24 on 6/7/07

oops, spelling error LOATE should read LOATHE... Prophets are vastly misunderstod, they see things in BLACK and WHITE, they (some) wonder why others can't see the world as they do, can be very impatient, need to master speaking truth, IN LOVE, are usually one step ahead of the church (visionary/dreams/direction/where God is leading the Body), can see fakes and snakes (people wearing 'Christians' masks)

Does it line up with the principles of God's word? (essential) Does it confirm what God has been dealing with in your heart? (good sign) If it is something that never occured to you before, be VERY cautious about putting any trust in what was said.

NEVER do something because someone "prophesied" over you! IF it is God, it will be confirmed in very clear ways. Put it out of your mind and wait on God. Allow His Spirit to lead YOU PERSONALY. His promise, PERSONAL guidance. John 16:13.

Interesting question. Doesn't Amos 3:7 state that God will do nothing, save he revealeth his word to his servants the prophets? Shouldn't we be searching for those whom God has called as prophets?
---Steve on 5/23/06

Elder; you never answered my question. Do you think the gifts are for today or do you think they ended?
---Rebecca_D on 3/19/06

In Corinthians 13:10 refers to when Christ comes and since he has not yet returned--all spiritual gifts remain--so yes prophecy is real today
---Betsy on 3/18/06

Elder; do you not think prophecing is not for today? God said in his word that he will pour out his spirit on men and women to prophecy and their children to have visions. So with your reponse, if someone would come up to you and said a spiritual storm was coming your way, would you brush it off or would you try and get confirmation from God?
---Rebecca_D on 3/18/06

Becky; maybe your husband isn't saved yet because you can't even say God's name. John; while my Pastor was preaching one night, he said there is a storm (trouble) within 10 minutes a woman came in the church and went to another lady and her husband and told her that her grandson was in the hospital and couldn't breath. What was said came true. When my husband was called to preach, I knew it before my husband had said anything. He told me what God wants him to do, I smiled because I already knew it.

Why would I be interested in some person saying something because he claims to be a Prophet when the Bible has the more sure word of prophecy?
Everything God has for us pertaining to life is recorded in Scripture is there really a need for more?
---Elder on 3/17/06

Isn't that called hindsight if you recieve prophecy only after it has come to pass? Nineveh couldn't have got away with that one. Many of you have commented that there needs to be confirmation about a prophesy. This is a new one to me. Would you have any Scripture for this? Thanks.
---john on 3/17/06

Prophesying is not fortune telling, it is future telling and/or speaking under divine influence. (Strongs dictionary word # 4395) Moderator, I didn't say we are to recieve all prophets. I said, If you recieve the prophet you recieve the reward but the choice is yours.

Moderator - "If you recieve the prophet you recieve the reward but the choice is yours." This statement didn't say receive SOME prophets. Christians must have discernment as there are many FALSE prophets.
---john on 3/17/06

Until it comes to pass or have conformation, then no.

The scriptural test is given in Isa 8:20 "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."

15 TO 20 years ago I heard much prophecy concerning my future. Much of these prophecies(they were given by at least three different individuals) I have seen come true. On the other hand some of these prophecies(in particular the ones I'm thinking of were prophesied by all three people) have not come yet, I say yet because I'm not DEAD yet. All this prophecy business is very interesting.

A prophecy is for edification, exhortation and comfort. 1Cr 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
1Cr 14:4 He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

If you like what the prophet says or if it is confirmation or not has nothing to do with if it is true or not.In the N.T. we see Agabus prophesying about a great famine and that Paul would be bound hand and foot if he went to Jerusalem.I'm sure that didn't agree with lots of them. Here is a Scriptural rule. If you recieve the prophet, you recieve the reward of the prophet. You have the choice to recieve or reject it and you are rewarded in accordance.

Moderator - Show the NT scriptures that we are to receive all prophets.

Lynn, Just keep in mind that your local psychic can give you personal prophesy also. Just because it's in a "church building" does not make it right. And besides that, are not all the "psychic joints" closed on Sunday morning? Where do they go?
---Fred_S. on 3/15/06

Ask God for discernment. God will not be mad with you for asking, but rather will be delighted to confirm his word to your understanding and knowledge. When a prophecy is of God "doors" will begin to open up that direction.
---mima on 3/15/06

I was given a prophecy concerning my husband. He told me my husband will be a man of G-D whose ministry will be pulling man out of ditches. Little did he know that my husband literally pulls cars out of ditches with his tow truck. That was given probably 6 years ago; my husband of 33 years has not given his life over to the L-RD yet as for as I know. His vocabulary does not prove it anyway. So was this a true prophesy? I do not know, but it does give me hope that my L-RD has not given up on my dh.

It isn't Personal Prophecy it is actually a Word of Knowledge. Unless Word confirms what God was already telling you, prompting to do or leading you in that direction then forget it. Our lives in Christ are lived by faith, there's no need for God to tell us about the future except to confirm what He has already been telling us. Never receive or believe any "Prophecy" which you don't already know in your heart. Great fault in Church today is too much seeking after "Personal Prophecy".
---Darlene_1 on 3/15/06

if you are not certain, go to the word, and see if the prophetic word is biblical, and of course pray for God's wisdom and discernment
