The rich man and the Lazarus of the account are
intertwined in the same historical time, ie, they
were contemporaries and more than that, they
were neighbors, evidenced by "which was laid
at his gate, full of sores". As stated by others,
the rich man failed at loving his neghbour.

The request for a messenger to warn the rich
man's brethren was in the same spirit that people
say, "If I knew then what I know now,...!" But
he was told that Moses and the prophets were
enough for them, that if they "hear" them, they
would spare themselves of a fate like his.

On the matter of knowing, Luke 23:34: "Then
said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know
not what they do. And they parted his raiment,
and cast lots."

"Jesus says" It's easier for a camel to go thru the eye of a needle than it is for a "Rich man" to enter the Kingdom of God!
Rich men have the cares of this world at heart & have gathered things that will become a Testimony Against them!
I've owned Homes,Harley's,Boats,Gun's,ect.
My Heart was were my STUFF was!
This STUFF became the cares of my Life,
Not God!
The ERROR of the "Rich Man",WORRY about yourself & JUST walk pass Others in NEED!

It is no sin to be rich, I want to make that clear. No sin to wear purple and fine linen, not a sin to keep a plentiful table, if a man's estate will aford it. Christ shows that a man may have a great deal of wealth, and yet lie and perish for ever under God's curse.>>>What greater curse God has placed on unbelievers than hell. You want the curse lifted you must be born-again. this parable is about a man's spiritual condition.>>>If we slip this accepted time, we may ask, and it shall not be given us.

The most daring sinner in hell cannot force his way out of that prison. A stone is rolled to the door of the pit. Let his brothers know what condition I am in.Send Lazarus, where his address will be less terrible, to frighten them out of their sins. The rich man's wish was not granted. Let his brothers listen to Moses and the prophets, and mix faith with them, and this will be sufficient to keep them from this place of torment. The tongue used to speak against God and man was in torment.

There's no specific reason given for the rich man going to Hell, other than the common reason of him being a sinner. It wasn't just because he was "wealthy". But, apparently he didn't give a hoot for poor old Lazarus. Especially as rich as he was. It's a good testimony that you can gain the "whole world" and still lose your own soul. Hell, being as horribly tormenting as it is, would have been worse for the rich man's conscience to know that his brothers could end up there also.

The rich man was selfish, and he only thought about himself. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil. The rich man wanted Abraham to warn his brothers about the torment the rich man was in and that he didn't want his brethren to come into this place of torment. He wanted them to be warned.

R.W. we are not told the name of the place where they were. What we do know is that the rich man was in torment, because riches had been the most important part of his life, and the poor man was with Abraham in a place of safety. Whether this is a parable (or an actual happening as some think) the reason for the 'story' is obvious and we should take the message seriously.

My wife once worked for a Christian woman who would buy a NEW Mercedes 450 SEL every other year. She also had her own private jet.

She also gave away 10s of millions of dollars to worthy Evangelical Christian causes each year.

Thus, it is not a matter of riches that is the problem, rather a matter of the heart.

In 1Peter, Jesus went into "prison" to preach to the souls there before Noah. In Luke, he is telling a story. The words "prison" and "hell" are different, so they are differnet places.

The purpose of the story is in verse15:You are the ones who declare yourselves just and upright before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted and highly thought of among men is detestable and abhorrent (an abomination) in the sight of God. (The Amplified New Testament )

Mimi - the rich man was indeed in "hell" because that's what the Word Of God says in verse 23. "The Rich Man and Lazarus" may be a story of how he was given much but had no regard for the least of men. In verse 28, the rich man wanted his brothers to be warned so they wouldn't come to this place of torment. Hell is a place of torment reserved for judgement at the Great White Throne Judgement. Whosoever is not found in the book of life will be thrown in the lake of fire for eternity.

Mima- First of all he was not in hell, because Jesus had not asended. He was in a place where Jesus went in 1 Peter 3:19. Once you are in hell, it is all over for you!

It is more clear if you understand the OT teaching, and realise that all the clues are there.
We have a care put on us, Isiah 1, to take care of the poor and the needy. Those who are rich are expected to support the poor. not ignore them.
His sin was to ignore the poor man at his door, and not to feed him.

I think it was because in this world he had all the riches, etc., The rich man wanted Abraham to send a messenger back to talk to his brothers to tell his brothers there is a hell, and hell is a real place, and you might be coming here with me if you don't listen to what they say. He was told "they didn't listen to the prophets, they ain't gonna listen to me."
