can be found in the bible...but it is actually a way of listening to your inner 'Knower'. The one who can comfort when you pray. The one who can lift you up when you sing, the one that is just the inner voice saying: 'This is the day the Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it' and you feel immediately uplifted and good again, no matter what the situation. It is given to EVERYONE and can be tapped into at any time. It is given to you when Jesus died. Yeah! So, you got it.

We all vary in the degree of knowledge we possess. There is but one teacher, & He is a comforter. Students like myself look to the mature to help in our understanding. Criticizing can not help. Be patience & guide with love, we are all in search of The Truth. This is not a rebuke, but rather an admonishment.

"What is the gift of the Holy Spirit?"

It is the Fathers gift that sets us apart for His purpose & use. It is the Christ, the burden removing yoke destroying power of God. We are emerged in that power as we recognize & acknowledge, by His grace, that we are powerless without it & ask in humility to experience & rest in His.

Interestingly, they knew that the people saved at Cornelius house had received the "gift of the Holy Ghost", (Acts 10:45) "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. This would indicate that, to them, the gift of the Holy Ghost meant something different then the receiving of the Holy Spirit at conversion which is clearly not accompanied by the gift of tongues.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is the same as the gift of eternal live. When you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit at conversion, you receive the gift of eternal life. Tongues, healing, ect is not the gift of the Holy Spirit, but are gifts of the Holy Spirit. there is a difference.

My lack of knowledge would prevent me from being able to improve upon the answer given by Bruce.

It is a divine power of God....and and God give unto everyone the manifestation of the spirit.the gifts of the holyspirit are found in 1Corinthians 12 verses 8-10.

Acts 10:44-48 lets us know that the gift of the Holy Spirit is the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Once you except Jesus as your Savior the Holy Spirit comes and abides in you. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is a free gift for every believer following the new birth.

Which one? There are many gifts from the Holy Spirit (Ghost) speaking in tongues, interpretation of tongues, healing, miracles, casting out devils, wisdom, knowledge, faith, giving, prophecy. 1 Cor 12:4-12, Mk 16:17-18, Acts 2:38, 10:45, 1 Co 7:7, 14:1.

The expression gift of the Holy Ghost only appears two times in the KJV.

Acts 2:38, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."
---Bruce5656 on 4/19/06

If you believe that a person becomes a Christian because they repent andare baptized, the gift of the Holy Ghost would be the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that brings about conversion. (a decidedly un-scriptural view)
---Bruce5656 on 4/19/06

On the other hand, if you believe that we are to be baptized because/after we have become a Christian (have received the indwelling Holy Spirit) then you have Peter distinguishing between becoming a Christian (receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit) at the time of repentance, becoming baptized in water and subsequently being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
