Things Not Listed In The Bible

Many say we cannot be dogmatic and say that something is a sin when it is not mentioned in the bible (e.g. tobacco). These things that did not exist back then are not only not described as bad, they are also not described as good so what criteria do you use to decide which they are?

These things that did not exist back then are not only not described as bad, they are also not described as good so what criteria do you use to decide which they are?

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things [are] honest, whatsoever things [are] just, whatsoever things [are] pure, whatsoever things [are] lovely, whatsoever things [are] of good report, if [there be] any virtue, and if [there be] any praise, think on these things.

1 Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Oh, don't I know it--he has a death wish, of sorts, smoking and all! :( He has been prayed over and is working hard at overcoming now, I am very proud of him. :) Like he says, "talk is cheap" so he's really striving to overcome his bad habits (smoking, pot and drinking), he wants us both to be happy. I love him and I just live for the day any one of those habits is given up for good! :)
---Mary on 8/5/10

Mary your husband has a death wish. He is killing himself by smoking cigs and having asthma. I hope you make him go outside with his cancer sticks. But do it gently. He is the man of the house. I hope. Second- hand smoke is very dangerous for you and anyone else in your household. You must protect your health, even if he does not care.
---Robyn on 8/3/10

I sure hope and pray my husband beats the odds! He smokes pretty heavy and has asthma so I worry greatly but I also know I can't prevent losing him by worrying about it so I try to just pray.
---Mary on 7/16/10

\\And people who are addicted to smoking develope lung cancer and other cancers directly related to the smoking of cigarettes. \\

People who don't smoke can get lung and other cancer, too.

Classic example: Belle Silbermann, known to the world as Beverly Sills. She died of lung cancer and didn't smoke.
---Cluny on 7/15/10

This is where spiritual wisdom comes in. There is a scripture to fit every situation in our lives. It does not have to say:thou shall not use drugs and so on.Drugs are bad for anyone. Saved or unsaved! I don't have to hit you over the head with a sack of bricks , to know this will hurt, injure and possibly kill you. Come on,now. We know cigarettes are no good. We don't need a scripture for that. But there is one. We should just be moderate in all that we do. Just try to please God and forget about the rest of this silliness.
---Robyn on 7/14/10

Most people know that cigarette smoking is very bad for your health. And people who are addicted to smoking develope lung cancer and other cancers directly related to the smoking of cigarettes. Cigarettes contain tar and nicotine and other chemicals which are bad for the body.
---Eloy on 7/11/10

God gave to us to read what Is required.
As far as other, the world could Not contain the books.
---Lawrence on 7/10/10

Agreed moderator. The bible interprets itself and as regards things like drugs, smoking and other harmful things we do to our body the bible makes it clear that we are to look after this body that God has given us. It doesn't say we should not break the speed limit because cars didn't exist but we are not to kill other people or do harm and we are to obey the laws of the land we live in etc. etc. There is usually an answer if we look for it.
---f.f. on 3/8/08

1) I 100% agree with the moderator.
2) I follow "Be ye holy, for I am holy" says the Lord.
3) Ask yourself: Would I do this in front of Jesus?
4)Is it against the law? (some folks think smoking pot is okay), yet it's against the law, that's very contradictory and wrong.
5)Would God Bless it?
---Donna9759 on 4/18/07

Your body is the temple of the holy spirit. You ain,t suppose to do anything that ain,t good for it.Now folks that includes anything your sweet little minds can think of that bad for your body. Alos includes any sexual transgressions that your body might perform.Woo serious statement???
---tom2 on 6/15/06

"....and this is the commandment that we have from him...." is WRONGLY interpreted by you Josef because you have added the word "ONLY" before commandment, making void ALL THE OTHERS Jesus clearly put in his Word, both old AND new testaments.
---T.S. on 6/1/06

T.S. Part 2- Love does not condemn, accuse, or criticize another. How can we, who recognize our own weaknesses and short comings justify judging someone else? (Rom. 15:1) "We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak" (2 Co. 5:21) "For He (the Father) hath made Him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him". Made is the optimum word. We are the Fathers workmanship. See (Eze. 22-38)
---josef on 6/1/06

T.S. Part 1-First Mat. 22:37-40 was Jesus' response to a question from a lawyer to tempt Him concerning the commandments in the law. My question to you was concerning the commandments Jesus gave His followers (again one). Loving the The Father and loving my fellow man are one in my mind. (1 Jn. 4:19,21) "We love the Father because he first loved us". Without that love we would not know love. "And this is the commandment we have from Him, That he who loveth God loves his brother also"
---josef on 6/1/06

My brother was injured in a road accident in 1957 (aged 16). He was in hospital for more than 3 months and we were encouraged to take cigarettes in for him to help him relax. They were allowed to smoke freely in the wards. The dangers of tobacco just were not known then. We have no excuse now though and if we choose to endanger ourselves in private that is up to the individual but no-one should suffer from someone else's second hand smoke.

Carla ... What I had meant to say was "You must be young if you do not remember the time when it was not commonsense".
And indeed you prove that now, because it has not always been known. You remember the 70' when yes, it was known to be bad for health.
But do you remember the 50's when smoking was recommended as a stress relief?

Carla--Alan of UK is correct. During WWII every U.S. soldier got a pack of cigarettes with his daily rations. That was in the early 1940's. Many more people smoked (more wasn't "ladylike" for women to smoke, tho some did). It wasn't considered all that dangerous.

I washed the hair of many elderly ladies where their partners and family members smoked, poor souls their hair yellow amd stained in nicotine, and some woman their chests was bad and some had lost their husbands to lung cancer, but God allowed them quality of life and I watched as their hair returned white, and a wonderful life after in the ELP Homes without the smoke(Praise God) You Bet I Looked After Them.

I owned my own business and knew quite a few people, try and tell some of the ones that had mothers/family members that had health problems brought on by other peoples smoking addiction that It was all down to how much they smoked themselves? ---Carla5754 on 5/29/06

Alan, shame on you for thinking I have no clue I smoked from the age of 7/26... 20 in some days. Started by my brother who blackmailed us into having a (drag)smoke and then said he would then tell on us if we told on him. We were given by our parents sigs to light by pulling on them and eventually we all began smoking, but don't be fooled by todays warning it was always common knowledge that smoking was bad for you, there was just not as much evidence, 70's

IF those who believe in "Grace, not law" claim to be saved, but return "as a dog to it's vomit" they are probably not even saved. Only now they are in more danger than ever because they BELIEVE they are SAVED.
Grace is what saved me, not the law. But because of God's all surpassing Grace, because Jesus willingly died for me while I was yet in sin, I WANT to do whatever is pleasing to Him. I do miss the mark at times, but I ask for forgiveness and press on.
---Donna2277 on 5/29/06

Sin is transgression of the law (1John 3:4). The law states "thou shalt not kill." Smoking kills. Any questions?

Nurse Robert, obviously we don't all interpret the word SIN in the same way. I would say that breaking a commandment is definitely a sin. Jesus commanded that we love one another (even our enemies) so how can puffing a carcinogenic substance into someone's face not be sinful. It shows contempt rather than love. I personally do not know any smoker who smokes in complete isolation, harming only themselves.

7. "You know, they read all that stuff in my word, but for some reason they think I PUT them there to teach you what my word says."

What is WRONG with people today, can't they understand God's word in the least little bit?! Can not you see what is right in front of your face in plain english?! Does anybody believe in being DOERS of the word and not hearers only? Do you take ANY OF IT seriously- at all? I honestly wonder why some people on these blogs even bother to HAVE a Bible
---T.S. on 5/29/06

6. "All it takes to be married in my eyes is fornication, don't pay attention that I said over and over in my word to NOT DO IT! Live it up! you only go round once. Hey I know you work hard all week and need your rest- dont worry about having to attend church anywhere, go ahead and sleep in and catch the game later on, relax, you need to take care of YOU, and besides, all those guys called Pastors want is your money anyway. That, and to tell you how to live!.....
---T.S. on 5/29/06

5. "And besides, you don't have to pay ANY attention to anything I established as my UNCHANGING LAW, so, anything written before Matthew, just ignore it, it's invalid and doesn't apply to you at ALL. So go ahead, smoke, smoke pot even, I dont care, drink, party, listen to worldly music, feast your eyes on all sorts of flesh pleasing entertainment on TV, and hey, if you're in love with that someone special- go for it dude!.....

4. he did NOT say "OK, you're saved now- do whatever your little heart desires, if it feels good, DO IT! Go ahead, it's perfectly fine with me if you all keep living the same old way you were living when I saved you and dragged you out of the pigpen of the world! You have no limitations, I'm never going to say no to you, and you're free to act any old way, and get involved in all kinds of "harmless" sins cause I understand you're only human.....

3. What governs you "grace, not law" peoples lives?! Do you have ANY conscience at all? Any rules or boundries that you live by? Do you just live your life doing whatever feels good to your flesh, with no self discipline or flesh crucifying whatsoever?! Jesus said that he who follows after him must DENY HIMSELF, and take up his cross, and follow him-
---T.S. on 5/29/06

2. He would not have said this if there was only one commandment we are to obey, how ludicrous and idea! In order to fully obey the first commandment he gave here, we have to crucify our flesh and all it's old desires. We are not our own anymore, we are BOUGHT with a PRICE. If you refuse to make him your LORD and MASTER, he will NOT be savior in your life. You don't take him YOUR way, he is the one who inspired and ordered his word written- EVERY WORD OF IT is Holy and is left to us for a reason.
---T.S. on 5/29/06

read your Bible more carefully: "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with ALL thy heart, and with ALL thy soul, and with ALL thy mind. This is the first and great COMMANDMENT. And the SECOND is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these TWO commandments hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets." In other words, ALL OTHER COMMANDMENTS are based on these two- you can't keep THEM and not the others- it's impossible.

Everything that we do that is not totally pure and holy is a sin due to the sin nature that came out of the fall. Perfection belongs to God alone.
---Helen_5378 on 5/28/06

Any intentional self-harm or self-destruction to your body and health is a sin. Since the beginning, when man discovered certain plants, animals, substances and behaviors were harmful to themselves, they made it a point to abstain from them, and rightly established it a sin to foolishly ignore that they were proven experiencially detrimental things. Thus smoking is a known sin, it's proven to be carcinogenic, causes bronchitis, asthma, premature death, premature and stunted birth in infants, etc.
---Eloy on 5/28/06

Christine, the OT also spells out a lot of dietary laws that kept one away from "unclean" foods, as well as outlining purification after "that time" for women..

o.k. the bible says not to partake of anything unclean. it also says to come out from among the world and be ye a seperate people. think about it. is smoking clean? no. it fills your lungs up with smoke that causes cancer and chances are you will eventually end up with the sicknesses that come with smoking. it is not a judgmental thing here, it is a common sense thing. if it harms ya, dont do it. if it is dirty and can harm you, dont do it. remember know ye not that ye are the temple of God.
---christine on 5/28/06

In considering the Bible's leading in all our daily walk with God,we must consider with great weight "whatsoever is not of faith is sin". This covers all things which fall outside the realm of walking as Jesus did and Jesus said "be ye holy as I am holy". Seems, if holiness wasn't possible Jesus wouldn't have said it. Perhaps Christians give themselves too much leeway to sin, and too little credit for their ability to surrender to God keep them from sin.

T.S, You speak of all the commandments Jesus gave His followers. Personally I know of of only one. John 13:34 "A new commandment I give unto you. That ye love one another; as I have loved you". Reinterated in Jn. 15:12. And again in verses 17. Please if you would, list the other nine you mentioned. And I am not talking about the commandments of the law. And It is my understanding that all thing are possible with the Father. Who is he that condemns those that the Father has justified?
---josef on 5/27/06

Jesus said "If you love me, keep my commandments." -And contrary to popular belief, there are MORE than 10. I'd believe these people "loved and served" Jesus ONLY if they were BRAND NEW CHRISTIANS, not fully delivered yet- BUT, the key is, did they hate the habits that were destroying them, and seeking God for deliverance? Impossible to "love and serve" Jesus and still be snorting, guzzling, and puffing and saying "Hey, no big deal, we ALL have faults!"
---T.S. on 5/27/06

it probably is technically sin if you smoke but none of us are perfect yet. my very dear freinds who lead me to Christ both smoked and 1 had a cocaine addiction and another a drink problem, but they still love and serve Jesus!

3.....refusing to let God be in control instead of our own stubborn wills- THAT is where the sin is. SO, no, smoking will not send you to hell- but holding onto the habit even though God is dealing with you (and he IS) to let it go....WILL. We should be so commited to God that if he one day asked us to stop sitting down, we'd be willing to stand up for the rest of our lives. That may sound silly, but THAT kind of obedience is what he looks for.
---T.S. on 5/26/06

2. The SIN is not so much in the actual action of doing (or not doing) one of theses things. The SIN is in knowing it's causing you harm, hearing God's voice calling you to lay it down and let him deliver you from it, and then turning a deaf ear to him and not even ATTEMPTING to give it up and take better care of yourself. Talking yourself into the lie of "oh, it isn't hurting me that much, and besides I see nothing wrong with it and I like it!"....
---T.S. on 5/26/06

People, people, PLEASE! Haven't we "beaten this dead horse" long enough?! The bottom line is- smoking, overeating, eating unhealthy foods, drinking, loosing sleep, not excersizing, working too much...-all of this causes "harm" to our bodies, and there are not many people who can say that they are totally NOT guilty of one or more of these things, as well as a whole host of other things I didnt have room to list.....
---T.S. on 5/26/06

Nurse Robert, yes I was a smoker, when I was a teenager and early 20's. Did I quit by willpower 45 years ago? No. I had surgery and smoking made me sick even when I tried a year later. I had never inhaled but used smoking as a diet aid. Some trade off Huh? I consider it God's way of helping me in my ignorance to do what was best for me. Praise the Lord for that! Indeed they may well be if abused to the point that they KILL YOU, but that's between you and your God. Whoever he is.

Me, I can smoke a cigarette and forget about them, not everyone can, and that's when we fall away to a lesser affection. (Titus 1:15)

Define sin properly. It's a falling short of doing that which we know is excellent.
I have sin in my life, don't you?

1John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
---Pharisee on 5/26/06

Carla ... you must be young if you think it is a matter of common sense. It is only recently that the health risks were known. During WW2, every serviceman was given a free allocation of cigarettes, and health advice was to smoke to relax.
it is easy to condemn, more difficult to acknowledge the history of this practice.
---alan8869_of_UK on 5/26/06

If it is a health Risk then it would be a sin to put your health at risk, but if you want to kill yourself by somking and other around you from your habit the cosequences of passive smoking. So why should God give you a New body when you abused the good one that he already has given you? Common sense says ITS A HEALTH RISK you choose. If you are not faithful in the little Body God has Given you how would you manage the New one he promised?

A "sin" in America is not often a "sin" in another country.

Read it as I clarified it.

If not mentioned as a sin like the 10C, it is NOT a sin. It may be an unhealthy practice, like smoking, or too much sun, but the practical implication of dividing into "American sins" and "European sins" is that NEITHER are in Scripture.

Any US ladies here who shave their under arms or use a tanning bed? Does any one here dare to call them sinners?

The whole key is temperence and does it harm the body. Few smokers are ever temperate and smoking can and does kill. Know ye not you are the Temple? Our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Ghost, and anything which defiles our bodies/Temples is a sin. Smoking also shows a lack of willpower and respect, not dealing with the reality of what smoking does to one and the people around him who breathes secondhand smoke. So there is no love for ones self or others and that is a sure sin.
