Not by works lest any man should boast. This Is referring to mans carnal - self righteous works to boast & brag about, I took this person to work, bought a family groceries, gave a boy my coat etc. People think they'r a good - doer
is enough & they think they'l make it into heaven.
S U R P R I S E, Not so.

Godly works Is, being baptized, Bible reading & study, praying, playing music & singing for the glory of God, witnessing etc. You will Not make it without Godly works. Matt.24 v 13.

Not by works lest any man should boast, for you are saved not by works but by faith.jesus died once for all, once truly saved you cannot loose your salvation.the word teaches that he will not loose even one.

.ralph, Everywhere in scripture it reads that every person is rewarded according to their works which they have done. God the Master will repay each person what they have earned, whether everlasting paradise for working God's will, or everlasting damnation for not working God's will.

The book of James illustrates how a true saving faith will manifest itself through the works of the believer. James correctly points out that mere words without actions are useless to our fellow man. Works also prove that our faith is real as in the case of Abraham. Nowhere does the bible say that a person's works will earn him everlasting life. On the contrary, it is by faith that you are saved, not of works...Ephesians.

Works without faith is 100% dead. The Bible is perfectly clear that if you have no works you have no salvation, and a workless believer might just as well believe in no God at all, for their faith is in vain. "And by works faith is made perfect." Please read James 1:22-25; 2:14-26.

You can not work your way to eternal life. There is no remission of sins without the shedding of blood. Your good deeds will never cover your sin, only the blood of Christ will. Jesus saved people through their faith. Read Luke 7:36-50 for one example in which He told the woman that her faith had saved her. He also told her to go in peace. Seems like He was assuring her of her eternal security.

By mistake I left out a word in 1Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
---Ulrika on 6/4/06

The Bible does not read, Do not work for salvation; instead, the Bible reads, Do the works of Christ else you have no salvation. I work for God because it is our duty and we are Commanded to work, and 2nd I work for God because I know that he above all is faithful, and 3rd I work for God because I am in him and he in me, I love God and I always do what pleases him. God does not want people to serve him only when they feel like it, but always and at all times. Please read Matthew 21:28-32; Luke 14:25-35.

Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 1Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundent mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

2Corinthians 1:21 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of Spirit in our hearts. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased poosession, unto the praise of his glory.

Our good works are a testimony of our faith. Peter 2:12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you evildoer, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.
---Ulrika on 6/3/06

2Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with and holy calling, not according to our works, but according to how pupose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he save us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope elernal life.
---Ulrika on 6/3/06

Good works are evidences or proof of our faith. 1Timothy 5:10 Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 6:18 That they do good, that tey be rich in good works< ready to distribute, willing to communicate; 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnnished unto all good work.
---Ulrika on 6/3/06

Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, the Christ is dead in vain. 3:22 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no long under a schoolmaster. 26. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
---Ulrika on 6/3/06

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by works of the law: for by works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the work of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
---Ulrika on 6/3/06

Ephesians 2: For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. Romans 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

My security is in Christ Jesus, Who is eternal--not my own act of faith.

Of course, St. James, in talking about Abraham, said, "So we see how man is justified by works and NOT by faith alone"--which is why Luther decided that James was the "epistle of straw" and not canonical scripture.
---Jack on 6/3/06

Two kinds of works refered to in the scripture, Judaism is works for salvation under the law. But James is speaking of the works of faith. these works are done by the Spirit of God through the Life of a person, it is a witness to the believer as well as the world, It is the law of liberty, the walking in the Spirit. Being endued with power by the witness to be a witness.

mima-He is able to hold us IF we allow Him to,no man can take us out of His hand-we do have a free will & God won't violate that. Jesus did pay the price for sin IN FULL but it doesn't give us a license to sin. We're not "all in the stages of being backslid'-I'm going forward in God as I choose to do His will & obey His spirit & word. We all can if we choose to, it depends on what we want & if we're willing put His will above ours. We're to have goals Jesus set for us-be perfect & holy like Him.
---paula9388 on 6/3/06

Loree-we were sinners before we're saved but after we're not "sinners" but we do sin.We shouldn't purposely sin after we're saved but you're right,we're not perfect,we're forgiven & are to "strive to be perfect" because Jesus is.Grace didn't replace works,it replaced the law.Man couldn't fulfill all the law that's why we needed a perfect sacrifice, which was Jesus, else we'd still be killing animals for our sacrifices. We're under the New Covenant of grace under Jesus (thank God!).

ELOY-faith without works is dead but works aren't required FOR salvation, they happen after being saved. We must exercise our faith to receive salvation.I Cor 13:1-3 states the different "works" that people can do,even give our body to be burned, give all to the poor etc & have all faith to remove mountains but have not love we are nothing & it profits us nothing. Ramon-right,we can't EARN heaven, Jesus did die on the cross for our sins & He said "it is finished".
---paula9388 on 6/3/06

WIVV-you were right,we don't work FOR our salvation, but BECAUSE of it.Josef-we didn't EARN the gift nor can we or it wouldn't BE a gift.Donna2277-it is a free gift, we don't "deserve" heaven because of the life we live but how we live is important.Being saved(by God's grace) doesn't give us a license to sin.Bible says"no sin will enter into heaven"-it says we'll be accountable for every idle word spoken.
---paula9388 on 6/3/06

jhon-I was correct in quoting Eph 2:8,9-saved by grace through faith, not works. You mentioned James 1:18-it says He brougt us forth by the word of truth,it doesn't say begat us by it.Faith comes by hearing & hearing by the word.Listening is not all I do,we're to be doers of the word & not hearers only. We're to be Christ-like(what to be a Christian means)-not rude or unkind to one another, but love one another. We shall know the truth & the truth shall set us free.
---paula9388 on 6/3/06

Not by good works but by faith? False. Faith is a good work. We are begat by hearing word of truth, James 1: 18. But if listening is all you want to do, you are deluded.

To Paula: If we can leave Him the He is not able to hold us. If He has not paid the sin debt in full then our ticket is not free!! All mankind is in varying stages of being backslid. The loss don't get started, and the saved are never perfect.

Jam 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

Jam 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Jam 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
---jerry6593 on 6/3/06

I keep asking those who say it is possible to lose your salvation how any man is saved if ALL are sinners. We are sinners before we are saved and we are sinners after. It is described in the difference between the Old and New Testaments. The Israelites could not keep the law, so a new Covenant was given - Grace replaced works.-good and bad works.
---Loree on 6/3/06

The Bible repeatedly states that salvation comes through faith-never by good works. We do good works after we been save. Romans 3:28,Galatians 3:8,Galatians 3:26,Galatians 2:16,etc refutes those False Teachers out there that said we are saved by faith and works!. Paul dogmatically says that justification is by faith alone. If you could earn heaven then Jesus suffered that horrible death on the cross for nothing. We cant add anything to the finshing work of Christ.

Works is the Command; if you do no works & bear no fruit, you're disobedient, and you will be condemned no matter if you profess faith in Jesus or not. Faith without Works is 100% dead. Works are required for salvation, we obey God not only because we desire to, but because it is right and the right thing to do. Works Save: Matthew 5:16,20,42-44; 7:12,19-21,24-27; 25:21-30,34-46; Mark 16:15,16; Luke 10:25-28; John 14:15; II Corinthians 5:9,10; Philippians 2;12; James 1:22; 2:8,14-26; Revelation 20:12,13.

Our salvation in a sense is a work we take up, and our labor therein is the effectual working of salvation itself.

Only God provides salvation in the ultimate sense of the word. The supernatural working of holiness in us is even provided us by the working of his Spirit.

His very name is Salvation and apart from him there is none, and so we strive in hope to recieve from him.

Will you be named or judged according to your works?
Not if salvation has given you a new name.
---Pharisee on 6/3/06

Paula- Yes we can "backslide" but do we loose our salvation because of it? You start your post by declaring that we can't do works to get or STAY saved. You quote Eph 2:8 that salvation is "not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" but then state "we don't get a free pass to heaven whatever type of life we lead" which contradicts the first part of your post. I'm confused. Which way is it? A free gift of God? or something we deserve to keep by the type of life we live?
---Donna2277 on 6/3/06

Salvation is a free gift to all who will receive it. We did not earn the gift, we can not lose it. Works are a result of that which the Father has done in us and is doing through us. It is He that works in us both to will and to do His good pleasure. We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Not by our force of will nor by our limit abilities but by His Spirit. Our work is to rely on, adhere to, depend on and trust in the One sent.

I know that I know that once God has written my name in the palm of His hand, He is faithful and will not erase it. When I read about the prodigal son, the father always considered him his SON....And a child can never not be the flesh of the parents in the much more in the spiritual.

Works aren't needed to keep our salvation but a daily personal relationship with Jesus is.We can't do works to get or stay saved but we do works because we love God & He puts a love in our hearts for others. The bible says we're saved by faith, through grace & that not of ourselves it is a gift of God,not of works lest any man should boast.I don't believe God leaves us but we can Him.We don't have a free ticket into heaven whatever type of life we lead.If we can't backslide why is it in the bible?
---paula9388 on 6/2/06

The definition is accurate according to at least two listed Biblical references: Romans 3:23 and Eph. 2:8 (There's more, but this should prove the point.) You don't work FOR your salvation, or even to keep it, but you work BECAUSE of your salvation.
