a three year old listens to not what we are saying but what we are doing.

the best way to explain the Holy Spirit is to show him/her the fruits of the Spirit in your own life.

I agree, that the hoyl spirit is an it. in the translation comming over to english the "it" got transferred to "he". An easy way to explain what the holy spirit (ghost)to a 3 year old ,though 3 is too young, but maybe wait until at least 5 or 6(this comming from a mother of 4 children) is simply," Jesus ,our brother, & our king, left us a gift when he went to heaven with his father..this gift is the holy spirit, Gods power, the holy spirit directs us on what is right & wrong (like our conciense)" If you look up the original meaning , the holy spirit IS an IT, not HE.We have to becareful on church traditions v.s. Gods true doctrine.

to a 3 year old child

Everything that comes from God is also God.
The breath of God, which comes from his mouth or nostrils is also God.
It has the same power as God, and is alive just as God is.
It goes into your nostrils, and lives in you

I've never thought about explaining the Holy Ghost to a 3 year old but your advice appears pretty good for a child that age as stated. Mainly that He leads the child to know who Jesus is.

It really doesn't serve any good to ridicule those who honestly try to help.
Neither does it any good to rejoice in others pain and the possibility of them going to hell.
Neither are Christ like or an attribute of a person in the ministry.
The scriptures are plain about teaching in humility and considering one's self in all matters.

LORI>>>you have got to be kidding.
---catherine on 11/23/10

Just tell them, you better hope that you get the person of the holy spirit, or when you die, you GO TO HELL....don't go with all this honey stuff.

The Holy Spirit has the heart of a child. He's very sensitive and can be grieved easily just like a child. He loves to play and have fun and show us who Jesus is. If the child is a girl, tell her Holy Spirit likes to play dolls with her. A boy, tell him Holy Spirit likes to play cars with him and tell him about Jesus. Now I know that's not all who He is but it's a start. You want to give them a good consciousness of Who He is.

Jesus is the Holy Spirit and God.
read Isaiah 9:6
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given, And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

He is God. All a three year old needs to know is that, simply stated, "Holy Spirit" is another name for God.
---Bruce5656 on 11/4/07

Tom, a child can understand the holy spirit infinately better than any adult, b/c there has been no chance of a wrong view to be set into them...
Just like how children have the most faith, you just gotta tell them that they can do it, and they'll believe stronger than any adult could

Hello friend, use "water" as the means to your explanation, you can drink it and although you don't feel it inside you know that it is there, put a blind fold on, run some warm water in a bath tub, she can feel it even though she does not see it, it is about teaching her to trust when she does not see what she has.

roberto , many adults dont grasp what the holy spirit is.let alone a 3 year old.The comforter, the convictor of mens hearts, the teacher and speaker to the hearts and minds of men of the truth of God.The revealer of God will and word.just to name a few.

<< Jack, I bow to your superior scholarship in Greek. Perhaps you can help me with John 16:7 Is "Him" here also "it"?>>

I'm talking about the grammar of Greek. In Latin (which would have influenced KJV translators and the West generally) "spiritus sanctus" is gramatically male.

roberto, do you mean explain WHO the Holy Spirit is? Or what He does? By the way Jack, since Jesus called Him, "HE", I think we should too. "When HE, the Holy Spirit comes, HE will lead you and guide you into all truth." HE will comfort you. HE will tell you of things to come. roberto, He is God's Spirit and He is Holy, thus He's called God's Holy Spirit.

Just say, it's God's telephone line for us to talk to Him.

"But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Ghost." Athanasian Creed

Jack, I bow to your superior scholarship in Greek. Perhaps you can help me with John 16:7 Is "Him" here also "it"? Nevertheless, I believe caution is in order. We are constantly struggling against those who believe the Holy Spirit is not a Person but an impersonal force used by the Father to accomplish His purposes. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. They are all eternal and all share in common the same essence, which is God.

I think that to a little three year old I would teach that child that "The Father is God, Jesus is God, and The Holy Spirit is God". That way I would be telling that child the truth and paving the way for questions when the child is older.
---Helen_5378 on 7/19/06

I would doubt that a three year old's sense of abstraction is developed enough to under stand the concept of a stratified two tear triune hierarchy.

Just tell him it is a member of the devine family of God

Likewise the use of "It" is the correct form of address as it is a neuter since neither God or the Holy Spirit have gender.

Hands up everyone here who fully understands the workings of the Holy Spirit. You may know how He has helped you, but that is an infinitesimal part of what the Holy Spirit does.
How can you begin to explain the Holy Spirit to a child who cannot yet understand how/why Christ died for us.
Bruce is 100% correct

Tina--Actually, "Holy Spirit" IS neuter--"it"--in Biblical Greek: to pnevma ton agion.

Roberto--Just explain that God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit live all together in his heart by faith.

There's a very good book for children dealing with Trinitarian theology: THREE IN ONE--A PICTURE OF GOD.

It starts off by looking at an apple ("The peel is apple; the flesh is apple; the core is apple.") and goes on from there.

"it"???? Since when is the Holy Spirit an it?
