In general, the reason the institutional church is a waste of time is because people are supposed to do the work of ministry and not a caste of elite clergy.
The work of the ministry is a "one another" process. 58 times the NT says, "one another." Church provides a "from the clergy to the sheep" a one way process. The messages, in general, are directed to supposely make the listener a better person, if that church is lucky, but it generally does not teach the listeners how to do the work of the ministry to one another.
The church provides a very passive setting. Stand up, sit down, stand up, give your money, stand up, sit and listen, stand up, go home. Living for Christ is an active experience, or should be.

Steven I am well aware of the difference between a church, and the Church. I have been aware of this for many decades.

I have wondered if your avoidance of denominational churches stems from your desire to ba a loner, under no one's authority. Maybe in a denominational church your pet beliefs may be challenged. Mine are, and to the benefit of my spiritual growth.
---Warwick on 9/9/09

Warwick, it seems you have this mistaken definition of what a church is. The meaning of church is a lot different today than it was in Jesus' time. The churches mentioned in Revelation are not denominations as most christians believe, but locations of groups of christians. church is nothing more than people, God's people. Wherever two or more are gathered is a church.

Church today is more defined as a building ("Did you go to church today?"), a nonprofit corporation ("Our church is tax exempt."), or a denomination ("what denomination do you belong to?"). Christ is returning to join with (marry) his people - not a building, nonprofit corporation of a denomination.

How much corruption can happen in 2,000 years?

Satan has had 2,000 years of infiltrating and corrupting the modern "church." Even when Jesus was alive the church, Christ's body of believers, was becoming corrupt. People today have slowly accepted the modern day (denominational) church. People join "churches that make them feel comfortable, that have a wonderful pastor, that include many activities, that include great entertainment, everything that they like but what is important - their eternal life. Most christian believe that a person must join a (denominational) church. Hogwash. All a person needs is a personal relationship with God - the same as having a personal relationship with an earthly friend.
---Steveng on 9/9/09

Steven churches are where mature Christians can and do help new Christians to mature.

Our pastor is of a different denomination and it matters not as we are, and he is, Bible based.

Our church is missionary oriented so obviously sends missionaries out. Also like any good church it aims to develop mature Christians who also become involved in various forms of outreach.

I believe churches are more divided by level of belief than denominational beliefs. It seems that many Christians here, come from 'liberal' churches which do not believe Scripture is God's absolute Truth. I could not in all conscience worship there.

Who says all churches are Christian?
---Warwick on 9/8/09

Denominational "churches" are detrimental to a maturing christian.

It forces people to become only hearers of the Word - not doers. What would happen to a church who grows apostles who go out into the world to preach the gospel - the kingdom of God? An empty church. If a christian of that denomination puts effort into it, then he is doing it by the traditions, ways of living and interpretations of the bible of that denomination - not of Christ.

Besides, if all christian churches are christian, why can't a catholic priest preside over a protestant congregation? why can't a Lutheran pastor preside over a Baptist congregation?

Hebrews 10:24-25, Philippians 2:4.
Some principal reasons to fellowship with your brothers are to learn about the Lord, worship him in unity, to have an opportunity to apprehend and operate in ones office / gifts, and to receive ministry from others.

ARE you a Christian? Has your life been changed by Jesus who bore the penalty for your sins and stands ready to make you holy in the sight God?

If you can't answer an unqualified "yes", you probably will find little reason to go to church. And a church that doesn't help you come this this place, may well be little more than a tiresome repetition of prayers, hymns and sermons. If something in your heart reaches out to understand more of God...start reading the Bible. Ask God to show you a church that lifts up Jesus.

If you are a Christian, pray for a church where you are challenged as a Christian...get out of your comfort zone, get involved and MAKE your time there worthwhile.

Grace! My God truly loves, when you step into his house. Because there he can see you clearly, hold you in his arms. Kiss you, as even a mother with her children.
Its when you leave his house, you hide from him.

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, so shall ye be my disciples.

So, when someone asks me! There is your church?
I just smile, look at your feet and thank God, for my lord!
God Bless

What we get out of church is what we put in to it.

God wants us to be actively involved with Him. We are saved by God's unmerited favour, but being God's workmanship we were 'created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.' Ephesians 2:10. Being a church-member is a God-given opportunity to serve.

As it is said churches are like hospitals, places where sick people go. In my church there are always people who need help, or friendship, or someone to talk to or someone to pray for them. Or all four!

We are to be givers not takers, servants not waited upon.

What a wonderful opportunity church attendance gives us to meet and serve our Christian brothers and sisters.
---Warwick on 9/6/09

I do agree with Susan on the blog. It is a privilege to be able to attend church. some people in other countries do not have this right. The church has deteriorated in the US. I do agree but it is still a place we can worship God and praise him for all that He has done and are doing in our lives. I try to participate in the service when I go. I like to clap, praise, worship, dance, read the bible, meditate and anything else to enjoy my God when I am there. I try to meet and greet others,be cordial and show love as Christ has shown to me.
Sometimes this is enough.
---Robyn on 9/5/09

Another view: Pastors and leaders have become so corrupt within the churches of God these days until people do feel church has become a waste of time. I have felt this way before but I refuse to let the Devil take me down completely. I still try to attend church on a regular basis.
Most members sit on the pews, wait to be entertained, give a small offering and then go straight home. This is the trend now. some do not speak to you, don't want to sit next to you etc..they don't clap and get involved in the service,at all. They don't have any sense of fellowship or show love to anyone. Some don't even bring a bible to church! How sad.
When church is over they head to their cars and feel they have done their Sunday duty.
---Robyn on 9/5/09

If youre church is not helping you grow nad you are not learning, then the correct thing to do is not to leave the church, but find a church that does help you grow in knowledge and fruits.

in all of the epistles paul encouraged and started and fed churches with the Word. we are to collaborate as the body of Christ sharpen and teach others and save others and help them grow as well.

Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

that is a church. All the believers also make up the church and bride of Christ.
---Jake on 8/22/09

That would be better if you leave your church. Our relationship with the Lord should be direct...remember church cannot save us. Actually God commanded us to leave our church today. Rev. 18:4 bec. the problem of Antichrist is present in the churches or congregation 2 Thes 2,3-4. Unless we dont go out, salvation is impossible inside. Thanks
---rosalie on 8/14/09

I think this very question is why I'm tired of going to church. The church today seems composed mostly of people asking "what do I get out of it"? And so, as a church, we are not doing what we are suppose to do! We are inneffective and plagued with the exact same problems of the world around us. We don't actually do anything because we are too busy looking for "what am I going to get". Wake up Christians! Church is what we make it, and we are so far from Biblically correct thinking that we are making it all about "I" instead of all about God.

Try participating in the service. The point of church is not to entertain you but to teach you, and every pastor could use a little help, whether as a reader or usher or volunteer to prepare the communion meal, or clean up afterwards, or assist with Sunday school lessons for the children in your faith community.

I trust that your pastor is reading from the scriptures every week? If not, then seek another church. But otherwise, you should be more active.

I go to church because I can. Being able to attend church services is one way to exercise democracy. Many people throughout the world don't have this freedom. We must remember our persecuted bretheren. They suffer for the belief that we take for granted. Also, I go to church because of the Eucharist, not because of any fancy preaching or inspiring music. Besides, church is free. It's not like going to a movie where you have to pay money.
---Susan on 7/19/07

For many it is the most scripture they will get out of a week. It is also a form of communal worship. Jesus did not set us up to be loners, we need each other for so many reasons.

Personally, it is one of the ways God communicates with me. Frequently I get the answers to my questions on an ongoing basis during the Mass. Many times I have even been guided in my answers for this site and other sites though the Mass.
---lorra8574 on 6/11/07

If one looks at the World, not at Christ's holy message of Sacrifice and Redemption, there is a different outlook;Jesus paints a New picture of Joy & Peace; He is"apart from the World",just as Believers must be.Nicodemus asks the great question of Eternal Life, and the Lord replies,"unless a man be Born-again,he cannot see the Kingdom of God" (John 3:3). I've read the different views For & against & its amusing reading the different answers. No one even mentions of going to Church to show allegiance to Almighty God acknowledge Him as OUR sole source of Health wealth & prosperity, of the soul His part of Him within us.To bring us together as ONE FLOCK,ask for forgiveness for our sins & partake of His gifts which He distributes His Message sharing His Love & Him self.Taking Him home with us to sustain us for another week. This is what we do in the RCC.

It is a big thing to go to church for the Bible commend us to gather together once in a week for encouragement and praying for each other. It's a place wherein we are trained to minister and to be ministered. Worshipping alone is for self edification. And heaven is a place of perfection. Training is the way to be perfect. Well with an attitude like that, you need to stay home anyhow. Because if you go to church with that attitude, your bringing in a negative spirit witch will bring the church down and the Holy Spirit can't move. I go to church to learn about Jesus, to listen to the word being brought forth. I have a desire to go, not everyone has this desire. Your not wasting your time, your wasting God's time. Church is a place where you can be together with people to talk, pray and think about God. Doesn't mean thats the ONLY place... I don't go to church because it gives me nothing. God can touch anyone in any church service. God never changes and He is always there for those who are seeking Him. You have to go into a service with the right attitude, expecting God to reveal secrets to your heart and bless you. If the word of God is being given out, it will not return void. Prepare the soil of your heart so that the seed of God's Word can grow and you will be blessed.

In reading early christian writtings, I have found that sinners that were saved were not brought into the church until they were examined and then if it was determined they were converted then they were welcomed in to fellowship. At that time sinners weren't allowed in until after their conversion. They went out into the streets, highways, and byways, into the public to preach where the sinner was saved. Then after conversion taken into the church. It's not that way now.

First of all church is not a place you go it is a state of spiritual existence. Secondly a few people in here are right on, you don't go anywhere in this world asking God, "What am I going to get out of this?" A christian attitude should be, "I will choose to focus all my mind, strength and soul on the Spirit and give all I have today to glorifying God" Love is giving not expecting.

If you expect to go to church to get something you have it all wrong. That is not the purpose of church. Church is a place of worship.
