What is real christianity today? What does it take to honestly call oneself a "christian"? Does it require or imply obedience to the teachings of Jesus or membership in a church or group or simply following Him?

RitaH. For a Bible based understanding concerning the Sacrament of Baptism, please read John 3:5, 1 Peter 3:20-21, Acts 22:16, Acts 2:38-39, 1 Cor. 12:12-13, Colossians 2:11-13, Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 3:26-27, Titus 3:5, 1 Cor 6:11, and Ezekiel 36:25-27. The God-Bearing Fathers of the Church also taught the importance (the necessity) of Baptism in the Christian Life. Scriptures are clear about Baptism.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me, a sinner.

"Salvation is only by baptism."Are you sure of that? Why,then, did Jesus die for us?-RitaH
He loves us and we can not Save ourselves. And YES,I am sure,Jesus said so,Mark16:16 "The man who believes in it and accepts BAPTISM will be SAVED,the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned." Matt28:19.."Baptize them in the name of the Father,Son,Holy Spirit." But if Jesus'Words isn't enough for you, listen to Peter and Paul. 1Pet.3:21,Acts2:38,16:15,33 22:16,Rom6:34,Col2:12

Once you are baptized by His Holy Spirit you are automatically cleansed by His blood and made new.

Nicole "Salvation is only by baptism." Are you sure of that? Why, then, did Jesus die for us?
---RitaH on 6/2/08

Wow Mima~ that is so bizarre, cause My religion introduced me to Christ and taught me the gospel of the Lord, in return I came to know Christ the Lord true Man and true God.
Therefore inspiring me to accept Him,follow Him, Love Him ,Praise Him and Thank Him resulting in my being saved by the One an only Jesus Christ!

The goal is not to CALL yourself "Christian", but to truly BELIEVE as John 7:38 says "He who BELIEVES...", not 'follows', not 'calls', but truly BELIEVES and has "rivers of living water" flowing from their heart ('tears of sorrow' in their heart for those who suffer misfortune).

Sorrow will make you sad (poor of spirit).
Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit...")in your heart).

"walk by the spirit" (Galatians 5:16 and 25).
---greg on 6/1/08

None of the above. You must be saved by His Blood.

A Christian is one who has love for God and His fellow man. Also a Christian believes in what Christ came to do. That is, the work of the Cross and HIS resurrection. We are saved by grace through faith alone. Some say even Satan believes there is one God,..really?
Satan and his helpers believe there is one God but they sure doesnt put their faith IN God.
Our works and obedience will never save us, its Christs obedience and works that save.
Everything is IN HIM...BELIEVE IT

A true Christian is one who loves God with all his or her heart, soul, mind, and strength. Also to love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.

It's unfortunate that true love is rarely found in the world today - even among Christians. Two similar events in my life, one 35 years ago and one four years ago, proves this to be correct. The lack of true love is the main cause of the great falling away from the faith.

Faith is enough for the obedient, but not for the disobedient. These people are cruelly, or perhaps deservedly, deceived.
---frances008 on 5/30/08

Salvation is only by baptism. Jesus said Himself that you must be baptized. He even told them to baptized them in the Holy Trinity's name. Jesus' Words in the Gospel. No other order for Salvation given by JESUS.
---Nicole on 5/30/08

A Christian is anyone who tires of the weight of his sin. He knows Jesus is the only way to forgiveness and opens his heart to recieve The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will help him learn and find a church home.
---Ken on 5/30/08

" Salvation is NOT found in a religion, but in a Person -THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!!!

"Whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." It's that simple. Follow Jesus--not a denomination or any other man. If you follow Jesus, you will want to keep His commandments.
---Susie on 5/30/08"
After reading this statement, Susie. I was reminded of James 2:19," Thou believest that there is one God, thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." I believe that belief in Jesus is crucial. Continued
---Mima on 5/30/08

Continuing continued- I agree with your assessment Susie. But certainly I do not agree with just believing in God, which I hear out witnessing many many times.

The ONLY requirement to be a REAL Christian is to know Christ as your personal Savior. Church membership is nice, being obedient to Chirst is great, but neither will make you a Christian; this will only make you a better person - unless in that obedience to Christ, you accept Him as your personal Savior. (John 3:16-18)

and by this may men know that you follow me,that you have love one for another, and ye shall know them by their fruits,my shep hear my voice and follow God with all your heart all your mind all your strength, and love one another as I have loved this and you are a christian.

I heard once that one thing that sets Christianity apart from all other belief systems is the doctrine of unlimited forgiveness;
(Matthew 18:21-22.)
It's also important to understand that Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1-14,) and is the only way to the Father (John 14:6.)

Wiv,Dottie. Enjoyed your dialogue. Obedience/yielding to Holy Spirit leading us to choose being born again in Jesus is part of being a true Christian. Continued obedience to God's Word is said by Jesus to be essential to fulfillment of the reality of Christ in our personal life. Following Jesus involves taking up our "Cross life" & is done after becoming a true Christian. Real Christianity is suffering, sacrifice; giving eternal life, glory to God & Spiritual Joy the non-Christian can not know.

To me, it is to be Christ like to all we meet/to be like Him, we need to know him, to reach out like Him/,to confess and live like Him,to love, care, teach,we follow Jesus teachings and help others, and church is a good place to start to learn of one another as He has loved us.
---karin on 9/5/06

Wivv, You think obedience to Jesus is optional in being a Christian? A Christian is CHRIST-LIKE, do you believe that Jesus was disobedient? Acts 5:32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who OBEY Him.
---Dottie on 8/21/06

Dotti! So! What is you point? You didn't state anything I didn't state.
---wivv on 8/19/06

"His life for yours". It takes all of your entire life and being, nothing less is acceptable. In genuine personal prayer you surrender your life to Christ, confessing and forsaking your sins, then ask him to Save you from sin and to come into your heart and into your life to take over. When you become born-again, you receive his nature in exchange for yours, he takes out the dead stony heart and gives you a live new heart, one in which he lives. Now you live for him, instead of living for you.

robert, it goes sooo much deeper than that. Remember God told Gideon he saved 300 men for Himself. "Many are called but few are chosen." It does imply Obedience to all of God's word, but it requires us to do HIS will, not ours. To lay down the things we want to do His will can be painful sometimes, but the rewards are GLORIOUS!!!! The walk with Jesus is a deep walk, a Holy walk, an obedient walk, a sacrificial walk, sometimes even a lonely walk. (((huggs))))

God is the same yesterday, today and forever. To be born again into the family of God is thru conviction of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit does not convict you, you cannot be saved. When we are saved, changed to a new creature, we are to live for God and die daily to our wants and needs. God will supply our needs. We are to be a light on a hill (testimony), good works and tons of other things in which there is not enough room here.
---shira on 8/16/06

wivv, Please take heed. John 3:3 Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Romans 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Matthew 7:23 And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!
---Dottie on 8/15/06

robert, depart from me ye workers of iniquity ,for I never knew you.a daily walk in obidience to Gods word and will and a life that daily changes to emulate jesus. The longer you live the more like jesus you should the beattitudes, these are the attitudes we should have.

Being a real Christian today is no different from how it ever was. It requires obedience to the teachings of Jesus and following Him yes, and both can best be done through meeting up regularly with fellow believers. However, before any of this takes place you would need to accept that Jesus died for your sins and then repent of all your sins so that you will never need to suffer as He did. Regular church attendance and keeping the 10 commandments do not, in themselves, make one a Christian.
