Why Should People Attend Church

Why should people attend church? All that happens is that a few songs are song and a man preaches a sermon and sometimes you say hi to a few people you kind of know. What's the point. Why not just stay at home and read the Bible and sing a few songs to God?

MarkV: "I really believe a lot of what you say, but not on the subject of abandoning Churches. That is wrong and not Scriptural."

The true church is the body of Christ, not a building, a non-profit corporation, or a denominational "church" - each having their own traditions, ways of living and interpretations of the bible. When you have christians bickering among one another saying things like, "What church do you belong to?" "Our church is better." "We have a better pastor." "We've got better activities." "We've got better entertainment." "Our church has the truth." and the list goes on, then you know that they are not talking about Christ's church.
---Steveng on 3/1/10

MarkV, denominational "churches" divide the body of Christ into their own little cults and water down the massage of Christ to the point where christian wannabes cannot mature. Today's denominational "churches" dumb down the gospel, interpreting the bible to their own way of thinking, thinking they have the truth. To them, you are just another face in the crowd and money in your pocket to fill their coffers.

And how do they attract people into their church? Worldly marketing campaigns. They attract people using earthly desires (entertainment, programs) and messages that will tickle the ears of the listeners (prosperity, feel-good sermons).

There is only one way to grow in Christ.

alan8566_of_uk: "...but I was talking about those Christians here on these blogs ... the ones you lecture and continually condemn."

You need to open your eyes to many, if not most, of these replies, alan. Most of them don't make sense spiritually, not lining up with scripture. We are living in the end times when knowledge has increased a thousand-fold and, in turn, so has the interpretations of the bible. If christians on these are ARE christians, why do they not have the same spirit concerning spiritual matters? This is becasue christians have taken a detour from the path towards the Kingdom of God. They've gone from biblical truth to their own truth. End-time prophesies concerning humans has gripped christiandom.
---Steveng on 3/1/10

Steven G, I really believe a lot of what you say, but not on the subject of abandoning Churches. That is wrong and not Scriptural. Sorry, but that one you got wrong. In fact maybe you need to join a good teaching church so that you can learn that there is good people, genuine Christians out there that you have not met that have some good messages to give you. Of course you will have to look high and low for a good church but there are many out there if you really care to find out. They are not all like the one's you ran against that didn't help you on your journey around the States.
---MarkV. on 2/28/10

Steveng ... What assumptions you make! I don't know about Mark, I certainly go and live in the real world.

You're probably right that most "christians" do not live the 24/7 life, but I was talking about those Christians here on these blogs ... the ones you lecture and continually condemn.
---alan8566_of_uk on 2/28/10

MarkV, alan8566_of_uk: "Steveng ... Why do yuo think that you are the only one who understands all that?

We all know that, and most here practice the 24/7 Christian lifestyle."

You two go on believing that most christians practice the 24/7 christian lifestyle. Sure, many christians know, but ninty percent do not practice it. They do not practice the christian lifestyle as mentioned in the bible. You two really need to go out into the world and meet people outside the safety of your house.
---Steveng on 2/27/10

Steveng ... Why do yuo think that you are the only one who understands all that?

We all know that, and most here practice the 24/7 Christian lifestyle.

Denominations do not stand in the way of that, neither do individual groups (large or small)

& there's nothing in the Bible to say that these groups should not have a building of their own. It doesn't have to be limited to parks, homes and cafes, and it can be more than half a dozen. And formality does not stop the heart.

What is your real problem with the larger group?
---alan8566_of_uk on 2/27/10

Steven G, you are doing to many online searches. You don't need an online search to know that Christians should come together, you yourself mentioned many places. Those places become the church where those people meet. Christ is not in a building or a place or a park figurative speaking, He is in the heart of those who come together born of the Spirit. Christ is present through the people, not the building.
---MarkV. on 2/27/10

A church is not a building, a non-profit organization, or a denomination. The true church IS the body of Christ. The churches mentioned in the bible are nothing more than groups of christians in certain locations.

It's important to have daily fellowship with other christians, whether it's just two or a half a dozen, in the park, at home (as in the bible), or at your local cafe. Daily fellowship keeps christians accountable to keep from wondering off the path toward the Kingdom of God. Again, do an online KJV bible search for "one another," "each other," and "comfort" because living a christian life is a 24/7 lifestyle - not a once a week pep talk dished out by denominational churches.
---Steveng on 2/26/10

People shouldn't have to go to church. You can pray and rejoice in your own home by yourself. God doesnt care where you are as long as you believe in him and give him praise for your very own exsistance. My belief is, anyone can go to church and LOOK Christianly but it is those who choose to keep silent and use the power of prayer that are the true CHRISTIANS. God is not a show off and God does not boast about how much he donates or what church he belongs to now does he???
---Mickey on 2/26/10

That was not an agenda, I was simply giving an example. Any example is fine. I was only talking about if you found a heresy of any kind. I could have used Baptisms practices.

I answered your last question, Not sure if it got posted. I get censored a lot.
---PASTOR_JIM on 2/26/10

Cole, you say what is the point? the point is if you stay home you will not read the Bible or praise God only when you remember during the day. Most of the times you will not pray for anyone. Oh, you can tell everyone here that you pray everyday and that you read Scripture everyday and pretent like you are holy at home but the fact is that at home you will do nothing for God. You cannot help a brother who needs help with Scripture, you cannot advice someone who needs help in his everyday life. You cannot praise God with songs or just listen to His Word. There is always an excuse for not going to Church. Its bad, pot lucks, false teachers, to many people, too little, always complains. Stop complaining and make a difference.
---MarkV. on 2/26/10

Here's a little story that doesn't really confirm anything, but it was an interesting experience.

About 30+ years ago, I went to a Baptist Church, thinking it was sound. I participated in a visitation program, visiting new folks that came to church.

My goal in visiting new people was to confirm or answer questions reguarding salvation.

After one visit, I commented to the "Elder," who was my partner, "We never did find out if he was saved." The "Elder" replied, "He said he was a baptist didn't he."
---Rod4Him on 2/26/10

If your church is Pre-trib and YOU find out this a heresy and bring it up would your Pastor/Church investigate it thoroughly or would they ostracize you? Can you disagree with your Pastor or is he the final word.
---PASTOR_JIM on 2/24/10

Brother we have had this argument before.

We can disagree on the small fringe issues and still be in fellowship with God and the body of Christ. Your statement of heresy is insulting and is only valid in your own mind.

The attitude you take on Pre-trib would have caused the entire ministry of the Apostle Paul to be dismissed as heretical.
---Mark_Eaton on 2/26/10

Definitely not. During the time of church age, christian should attend church. The church age has end. Satan Seats found inside the churches today. 2 Tes 2:3-4

God commanding every believer to come out. Rev. 18:4 Our relationship to God should be personal. Pastor or Going to church does not contribute anything today.
---rosalie on 2/25/10

Where would you tithe? God asks us to support Him with only 10%. How much do you donate to your State and Federal Governments? The Constitution says we give..for what is absolutely necessary. We need protection from others, Nations or cults! I look at the Mob and find it has removed the church from being the place to look for help! The Mob supports our intercity gangs by delivering drugs. The gangs support the Mob and this is in all major cities! The church supports what? A wife that refuses to give up on a husband that has 5 children from different wives? The wife went to church, the husband's dedication is to the Mob, indirectly! The church is responsible for the poor and not the Mob or government!

Many people attend church to satisfy a mate also many people attend church out of habit. In my many years of one on one witnessing I have ran into all kinds but one that I particularly remember was a man who attended the same church for 40 years. I was aware that he was a regular church goer however he had given no indication of salvation. When I confronted him by asking him or you saved he said no I have never gotten saved. This man had heard and understood the Gospel yet he had not done anything about his salvation. After witnessing to him he refused to pray for his salvation. Very next Sunday morning he jumped up before the service began and went forward to the altar to receive the Lord Jesus Christ!
---mima on 2/25/10

WHY NOT! Many people goes to church for many reasons. Has nothing to do with the living God. Okay, in John 4: 21-24, in this passage Jesus teaches that genuine worship is no longer confined to a particular place [John 4:21], but is based upon a spiritual relationship between the worshiper and God through faith in Jesus Christ [Phil. 3:3], I also want you to look at verse 26 where Jesus confirmed who He is "I who speaks to you am He"....Christ reveals to the woman that where a person worships is unimportant. Some or most worships what they do not know, they have created their own religion. God is to be worshiped in spirit and in truth. Look out for false teachers.

PASTOR_JIM: "There is no such thing as Fellowship."

Your eyes are as blind as the churches you condemn. Open your eyes, false preacher, and read:

Acts 2:42
1 Corinthians 1:9
2 Corinthians 8:4
Galatians 2:9

Who NOT to have fellowship with:
1 Corinthians 10:20
Ephesians 5:11

Christians must meet daily especially during these end days where it is easy to fall in the web of Satan:
Hebrews 3:13

Thanks Mary!
Is your church a serious church where people debate and even argue over doctrine or... Is it a church of fellowship , Potlucks, Mens Breakfast, Woman club, Awana for kids.

If your church is Pre-trib and YOU find out this a heresy and bring it up would your Pastor/Church investigate it thoroughly or would they ostracize you? Can you disagree with your Pastor or is he the final word.

Is Potluck considered more an unspoken sacraments than a meal. Do poeple at your church attend bible study or do they consider bible study, Lord supper less sacred than Potluck in their behavior? If you do not want to go to Potluck, is it a stigma? Can you say they stink and I'm not interested without being obtracized as a heretic.

They're just social clubs.

All churches of Today from the RCC to the Latest Rock and Roll church teach their traditions as Doctrine even if it means going to hell.

Better to stay home and read scripture without the adulteration of so-called Christian Preachers/members.

Avoid the Toxic pollution and read Scripture with prayer at home.

There is no such thing as Fellowship.
It is just Secular Carnal psuedo Christians talking about Emmas apple pie or Bobs Golf weekend. NO scripture is ever disccussed.

They are just a Facade of Christianity.
---PASTOR_JIM on 2/24/10

Eva, The main reason to attend "church" is fellowship. But stay as far away from denominational "churches" as you can. They are detrimental to the maturing christian. The sermons are watered down and you are just another face in the crowd. There is a huge difference between today's "churches" from those of Jesus' time.

Start your own home church as they did in Jesus' time. Do an online KJV bible search for "one another," "each other," and "comfort" because living a christian life is a 24/7 lifestyle - not a once a week pep talk dished out by denominational churches. Meeting daily is important even now as we come to the end.

It would be Oh so helpful whenever you use the phrase, "The Bible tells us", that you would reference your comment with Book, chapter and verse. That way , we can see the scripture for ourselves.
So many "the Bible tells us" in this blog are inaccurate to say the least.

Cases in point: (see John 14:6)
"its the preaching of the word that saves us"
NO it's NOT
"1)receive the word, 2) repent, 3) baptism by water in the name of Jesus, NO it's NOT
See Titus 3:5
Only one way to Heaven/Through Jesus Christ!
---Ollie on 10/27/08

Betty: "Because the Bible tells us its the preaching of the word that saves us ."

Preaching, in itself, does not save. It takes an active part of the listener to be saved - 1) receive the word, 2) repent, 3) baptism by water in the name of Jesus, and 4) baptism by the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately most Christians stop at the third one. If Chritians went on to the fourth one, we would see the Holy Spirit working through more of them and performing miracles greater than Jesus.
---Steveng on 10/27/08

The Bible says we should dedicate ourselves to the public reading of Scripture. Therefore, the best way to do this would be to hold outdoor (or semi-outdoor) meetings which are to attract the public ( not churches where there are the same staid old traditions and the buildings smell like cemeteries.) These should be places full of life and light and the power of God. Like the old revivals held in tents or public squares.
---frances008 on 10/27/08

Because the Bible tells us its the preaching of the word that saves us .It all so tells us not to forsake the assembling of our self to gather as some do also thats where we are taught about how to live for God

Mic: "Does that imply you are a ONE MAN CHURCH."

I am a Christian who belongs to no denominational man-made church, but to the Kingdom of God.

"and never attend a service,"

My services are wherever the Holy Spirit guides me - at a park, in a cafe, in the supermarket, at the beach, on top of a mountain. I've traveled throughout North America.

Mic: ""but sit at home do not pay thites."

I leave the house at 5am, get home about 6pm, leave after supper and don't return home until nine. I've been blessed by God as a technical writer/graphic artist by trade and teach English in the evening and the weekends. I live a very simple lifestyle thus enabling me to feed and clothe the poor in my own area using half my pay. I also hang out with the homeless and spend my time with children and young adults (mostly helping with homework, but rollerblade and play basketball when chances occur). Plus in my spare time I'm writing a book about my life with God for the past 50 years and everyone that crossed my path. Does that satisfy your assumption about me?
---Steveng on 10/25/08

There is no spiritual reason to attend "churches", buildings, or worship/training centers. We need no human spiritual teacher (if only we would ackowledge our anointing from the one whose image we are made in, we would learn TRUTH).

1 John 2:27
"but the anointing which you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that any one should teach you, as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is TRUE...".

The "worship centers" only teach the bible (word of truth) which has no authority...

Matthew 28:18
"And Jesus came and said to them, "ALL AUTHORITY in heaven and on earth has been given to me".

Amos 5:21

Denominational churches - having their own traditions, ways of living, and interpretations of the Bible - are a product of Satan. It's the greatest deception that belonging to a denominational church is a requirement. All God wants is a personal relationship with His people and NOT through a non-profit organization. Today's Christians have been deceived that they must "belong" to a denominational church.

Christians are not to be only hearers of the Word, but doers also. Do you equip each member of your congregation to go out into the world and preach? The Christian walk is a constant spiritual 24/7 battle, especially in today's world when Satan is working overtime to destroy God's creation. Do an online Bibles search for "one another" and "each other." Do you get your congregation to actively meet on a daily basis that is commanded of Christians to do daily? If Yeshua was here right now what church would He be going to? He would be on the street with the poor and the hungry, the rejected of society. Belong to a church, no! You do not have to, most of the churches today preach one thing and do another. Serve God with all of your heart and love your neighbor as yourself, keep the law of God and the testimony of Yeshua. Fear the God who created you, love Him and serve him through the people He has made. Being in church, being baptised doesnt make you right with God, for most so called born again people I have ever met have been worse then the so called unsaved.

If we are to go to church why is there so much scripture stating that the churchs have become corrupt and we should come out of the churches? Luke 21:5-6, Matt24:15, Mark 13:14, Luke 21:20-21, Rev 18:4. It looks like to me that history is sort of repeating itself and the churches are repeating exactly the same sins as the Nation of Israel. 1Jn 2:15- Mat 6:24- Isa 4:1 Pro 21:2, Isa 48:11, Isa 4:1.

Church is my life, I love it, adore and go more than once a week in fact right now I am priviledged to be in church at least 4 nights every week, and I love it. Hopefully you too can find a church that preaches and prays, and not entertains your flesh, the flesh needs that you know, but your spirit needs the Word of God that you might grow. God Bless you with the same desire that everyone who is in a good Church knows.
---Wade on 8/12/08

There is a huge difference of the meaning of "church" between Christ's time and today. Christians today say "Let's go to church" as though it was a building and they bicker among each other saying "My church is better than yours."

Chruch simply means Christians. It is NOT a denomination, a building, or a non-profit corporation. One verse in the Bible says to "they gathered the chruch." Does this mean to gather buildings?

If you are serious about your walk with God, consider looking into the benefits fo joining or starting your own home church.
---Steveng on 8/10/08

First of all, we should be going to church because God says so. Maybe you feel this way about your church because you feel like you are not being fed well. The bible describes being fed God's holy word as starting with milk just like a baby. Slowly(just like a baby) we have to start eating meat. Maybe your preacher only feeds you milk. Some pastors are afraid of upsetting people of the church and they preach about things everyone agrees on. I would suggest that you look for other church's to visit. Please don't stop going to church. Satan gains some control if you are not surrounding yourself with other believers. Some day you will be glad to have a church home and people that have learned to know and love you. Good luck and God bless you.

You forget the whole purpose in the first place.

That's why it is called holy.

Staying home is not the same as going to church. And how can you minister and pray for others needs if you stay home? You will receive from church what you put into it, if you put nothing in, then more likely than not you will also get nothing out of it. The Scripture says, wherever two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them. There is power in numbers; many a time I have gone to my Papa's house beaten up by the enemy, and came out having my socks blessed off of me.

humans are communal beings. we cannot exist well without a community. We need interaction with others. Church gives us community, it gives us a place to minister, it gives us encouragment in our lives, and it encourages us to deepen our relationship with Christ. If all you do in church is go. then no you are not doing enough. the Church should provide you an opertunity to minister according to your gifts.

Cole, what many people fail to understand is that God's true church isn't a building made with hands. Jesus said if 2 or 3 are gathered together in His name, He is in the midst of them. The purpose of Christians gathering together is to encourage and edify one another. This can take place at any location (home, church, restaurant, park, internet, etc). The early Christians gathered together at home with family and maybe a few friends.

At my church, we have no idea what is going to take place. We let God be God and let him have his way. You need to find a different church where, God can use you the most, and the people won't stop you. And if you want to pray for someone, brother then do it. If someone says something, have them take it up with God. You would be free in my church.

Cole, sounds like the church I attended before i was saved. Where I attend now, I love the worship time spent cooporately with the's awesome, we are blessed as individuals, built up in the Lord, encouraged, have opportunity to bless and pray for others on a personal level, not ritualistic, but Spirit led. I am always fed at church, the Word, and His presence is awesome. We have small groups also, and both serve a purpose and needs

LOL! That would be me that signed my name as Cole. Whoops! You'd be surprised how many times I catch myself doing that! This one snuck by me, sorry Cole.
There are many that claim to be Christians whose actions and words prove otherwise, but remember to extend grace to those who are blind to their errors. It is good to rebuke a friend in love and rescue them from their sin, but harsh judgement will only backfire, and cause you both to sin. Take it to the Lord in prayer.

I didn't write the last blog with my name on it. Somebody must have done it by accident. I question whether the church today is the Body of Christ that Jesus Christ originally put together or if we have some man made church today?

I'm not suggesting you quit church, that is between you and the Lord. I'm just saying I understand your frustration with it. Keep this in mind; God desires two main things from us. That we love him with all our heart, mind and strength. And that we love our neighbor as ourself. If you seek to obey these two commandments then God will sort out the rest. As we abide in Him he will abide in us and give us the minds of Christ.

It is important that we meet with other Christians that we may edify and encourage one another, keep eachother accountable, teach and help each other, be an example to others through our love for one another. Although I find attending church valuable, I find that small groups that meet in the home for a Bible Study are more effective in my life in regards to what I listed above. If you feel the church experience is a counterfeit to what Jesus intended for us, maybe you should try a Bible Study...

I am around with Christians at work and lunch and am able to freely witness. Church doesn't allow such freedom to pray and tell people about Christ.

The MAIN reason we should go to church is that Jesus Christ gave Himself for the church and established the local church as His assembly. The purpose of church is not to see what you can get out of it, but, what you can learn and share with others from teaching you are able to sit under. We are to be conduits of God's grace, not reservoirs.

"There is strength in numbers" Church is to help you mantain your spiritual growth through the, prayers, songs, sermon, Christian Education, and fellowhip with other Christians, etc. Satan really appreciates Christians who don't go to church. If he can get you seperated from other Christians, he has got you where he wants you - you have pulled a spiritual, "ham string". If your church is not supplying what you need, maybe you ought to change churches, not quit church.

All that I am really hearing here is that we are suppose to go to church. I learn little from the Bible at church and hear less from God as churches today typically don't have prayer time, altar calls or spend time in discipleship. I learn more and hear more from God by just reading the Bible and walking the walk throughout the week. Church doesn't allow us to pray for people during church time or to help others. I am only allowed to minister to others outside of church. I have more freedom to minister at work than at church. Your comments?

Cole, the church should also be a hospital for the hurting, the sick, the brokenhearted, to come and get healed. To come and get free, to know who they are in Christ Jesus so they may win the lost. It should be a place where unbelievers can walk in and get saved. Amen?

Cole, the Word of God says, "Do not forsake the gathering of the brethren." The church should be a place where Christians go and worship Father God with all of their heart, then hear a good message that they can apply to their daily lives on how to live as a Christian, then have fellowship with the brethren afterwards. It is a knitting together of the Body of Christ to allow the Holy Spirit to flow during the service to do what HE wants to do.

God uses the body to minister to each other. He said my sheep hear my voice. Each member has a part, no matter how small that part may seem. Even if someone there just smiles and says hello to welcome you - it could be the Son of God speaking to you! We go because we love Him and are seeking Him. Together we are learning how to respect, honor and worship Him as our God. And it is one step towards growing in our obedience. Go... and find the Lord! You WILL find Him when you seek Him with all your heart!

That would be ok if your getting saved was meant for you only. Bit it wasnt. You have to go out and influence others, build others in the word, strengthen others. The Bible talks of us as a body of Christ. and as we know, a body sticks together, hence the need for meeting. We were not created or saved for ourselves, but for others.
