Used To Kill False Prophets

If a man still prophesies, his parents, father and mother shall say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of the Lord." When he prophesies, his parents shall thrust him through. (Zechariah 13:3 NAB)
Does this mean that we should kill false prophets?

Of course. We don't want any more people turning away from our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said "think not I came here to bring peace but the sword" in Matthew 10:34. this was a physical sword not spiritual since in another verse Jesus said to His apostles to trade their garments for swords. So if He meant spiritual sword then are the apostles naked since they are wearing spiritual garments!? Of course not. Thus, false prophets need to be killed publically as a deterant to others.

No, not unless you are ready for death row. Holy zeal for God.{ notice the word Holy] and godliness will make us hate sin, and dread temptations. Most in those whom naturally we love best. [relations] False prophets should be themselves convinced of their sin. >>>Christ was wounded in His hands, when they were nailed to the cross. Jesus received them as a false prophet.

Jack: Not sure if you mean me, but; I sure dont want to kill anybody!
---sue on 6/8/07

Jack, the only fly in your ointment is that Zechariah 13 is a Messianic reference - Jesus is the fountain that cleanses us of our sins (see verse 1). However, I do think that the point was that all prophecy would cease and there would be no new Public Revelation after Jesus' death on the cross. The Bible does tend to get melodramatic to make a point - just like when Jesus said to call no man father or master or teacher, then all of His followers continued to do just that for the rest of the NT.

Sue, if and only if you observe ALL of the 613 commandments in the OT.

If you're going to pick and chose which you observe (and everybody does), then you don't get to kill false prophets.
---Jack on 6/8/07

Fundamentalist pick and choose what they will take literally. In a secular society as here in America extreme literalism would not work very well, imagine a 1600's Calvinist today going after a Wicca with a match and kindling. The religious right would like to redue America to enable the Calvinist have the power to do so, but they have failed, so far. Keep the literalism withen the walls of your church's, please.-history does not support you.

Jack, Paul said deliver that man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, I Cor 5:5.
Also it says Father's wife not stepmother although it could have been his stepmother but it could have been his mother.

Jack, Paul said deliever that man to Satan for the distruction of the flesh, I Cor 5:5.

St. Paul writes to the Corinthians about a man who was carrying on an affair with his step-mother--something that merited death under the old law (Roman secular law, too, for all I know).
Did he say that the congregation should stone them?
Did he say that they should turn them over to the civil authorities for appropriate punishment?
Or did he say, in effect, that mere excommunication would suffice--and repentance was sufficient to restore him?

Ronald.I can guarantee that you have at sometime in your life qualified for death also. Would you like to volunteer to be killed as you have so judged others?
Have you ever been rebellious? Ever not kept the sabbath? These are also punishable by death. I trust you will be offering yourself for execution shortly. And he who hasn't sinned can cast the first stone at you.

Ronald ... we had enough of that a few centuries ago, except then it was hang, draw & quarter, and burn, and torture to death.
No more please.

Ronald, If you take it literal, then can you show me where he picked up that literal sword he talked about and used it to kill anyone?
Show me where the apostles went out and killed the false prophets as a deterant for others. Paul did persecute and may have even killed what he deemed to be false teachers, but that was before Christ spoke to him literally. After that, he became the hunted and not the hunter.
Eph. 6:11-24 the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
---Cindy on 10/2/06

Ronald, your reply is very scary. Seriously.
Jesus was indeed talking of the spiritual sword, which is his word. His word desroys the wicked and it is like a sharp sword. It destroys wickedness with truth. When they accept the gospel, they lay aside their wickedness and become new people.
Garments are used to symbolize righteousness.
The saints are clothed in righteousness and are cleansed by the atonement of Christ.

Many a true prophet have been killed in the name of God by folks who believed in their heart of hearts that they were doing a favor for God and performing a righteous act.
Jesus Christ himself was murdered by men who deemed him to be a false teacher and a corrupter of religion. Jesus was not hated and tormented by the wicked outside the church, but by the preists and teachers of religion. They most probably felt this scripture in the Law and the Prophets (Old Testament) justified their horrid act.

Zec 13:3 can be taken 2 ways.
A man speaks lies in Gods name:
1) he is considered spiritually dead to truth and he offends God until he repents of said sin.
2) he is judged by men to be spiritually dead and must therefore be killed. Does this mean all of us who think we know a false prophet have the right to execute judgment on him and condemn him to a physical death?
Or should this judgment be left to God? Should we concentrate on preaching the Gospel meek and mild and harmless as doves?

1 Cor.14:29 Let the prophets speak, two or three and let the others judge. We have the gift of discernment which was not given in the OT. It is a NT. spiritual gift.
The NT. changed a lot of things. The letter killed but the spirit gives life. Good for the lady who was caught in adultery too and all of us who were rebellious as a child because we were supposed to be stoned too.
---john on 10/2/06

Jesus also said, "Put away your sword. Those who take up the sword shall die by the sword."
---Jack on 10/2/06

**Thus, false prophets need to be killed publically as a deterant to others.**
And who gets to determine who is a false prophet, Ronald? You?
---Jack on 10/2/06

Of course that does not mean that we should kill false prophets. If we did we would all be put in jail. That was part of the Law, which Christ abolished on the Cross.

**The wheat and tares grow together,**

And according to Jesus in Matthew 13, what gets raptured away first--and when? The wheat or the tares?
---Jack on 10/2/06

greetings, there will be much death over ones understanding of God,as it were in jesus'day, there never was freedom of speech as we know it went to war to gain this freedom yet does man want to go to war to make it cease?a wise person should be reminded to follow the spirit of truth ,thus if one in religious authority attempts to turn you then if sincere of truth seeking you will maintain that sublime personal relationship with your Father regardless of any prophecy
---earl on 10/2/06

Thou shalt not kill is still a commandment of God and unless God specifically speaks to you and tells you to kill a false prophet, NO, we should not. The wheat and tares grow together, now that we have the Spriit of Truth in us, we will be able to tell who is a false prophet and walk away from them, do not keep company with them, instead, pray for them. MANY will arise in the last days...keep the word of truth inside of you and you will not believe a false prophet's words.
