Yes, I am very concerned. I am on a fixed income. Last month I had less than a hundred dollars after I paid my bills (no food). This month was better. But if I tithe, I will not have food, medicine, nor basic needs, yet my bills will be paid.
I am concerned. I can't work right now. (I have been unable to work for 2 years)
** I know common sense: well you have to eat. What does God's Word say about this situation?
I joined a church last week. I am happy.
Yet, so concerned about not fulfilling the "Tithe".
---Brenda_Ri on 10/16/10

Some have the wrong idea on thithing! You are not tithing to God so he will bless us although he did say test me on this. A tithe is a man's may of saying "You blessed me with what I have and i acknowledge it" by saying here is my tithe as I say thank you for your provision no matter how big or small. Try it, it works wonders!
---Pastor_Bill_Gibbons on 5/25/08

Yes the money is to go to the store house and to be used to take care of the widows an orphans, but it doesn't I constantly hear of those in need not getting any help from the church.
---Rev.Ernest_Jobe on 5/25/08

I totally agree with Candice's post.I live by faith, and not by the law, as the scriptures tells us to. You are not obligated to tithe of today. It is voluntary. But I do feel everyone is capable of giving something to God's work. Even a penny will be blessed if it is given from the heart and you have nothing else.God knows your situation. We can hide, most of the time, from man but not from God. If you have to cut out some other unnecessary item from your budget,do give something to help others.
---Robyn on 5/24/08

Tithing was for the Jews. No where in the Bible, will you find a place where the CHURCH, THE BODY OF CHRIST, is instructed to tithe.

Also sowing seed has nothing to do with money, but sharing the Word of God,Mark 4:14-20.

Those who teach a person must give money if they want to receive something in return from God, distort and pervert what is written in Acts 8:20-25.
---Rob on 5/24/08

Caring is right about that, one caveat to tithing is you should probably check out who you're tithing to. Although the widow's mite went to the corrupt Jewish church of the time, but Jesus still praised her giving.
---Todd1 on 5/23/08

Tithing is important because if we don't tithe, the TV Evangelists won't be able to afford their private jets and to pay the bills to maintain her ultra rich mansions they live in.
---Caring on 5/23/08

Blessed is the poor who tithe when they think they have nothing. Thru my experience of being poor and tithing a tenth of my social security check, I find that I have more than what I thought I would have after tithing because God blesses me and anyone who gives Him what is due to Him.
---julie on 5/22/08

Remember the widow's mite...tithe of what little income you do have, and God will bless. I've heard many testimonies like yours where they've tithed in Faith and God blessed abundantly. They say you can't out-give God. Mal 3:10 "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this, Says the LORD of hosts, If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it"
---Todd1 on 5/21/08

#3 stephanie, That scripture in Leviticus is very specific in what is to be tithed, it specificaly states:
"of the land, of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree...herd and the flock..."
You are handling scripture very liberaly and that is dangerous, I warn you not to add to what scripture says, my friend. P.S. in my last post I mentioned nothing of tithing I specifically addressed giving.
---Ryan on 5/21/08

Funny how everyone thinks of tithing as giving, or sending money away somewhere.
---jhonny on 1/14/07

1. Christ came to "fulfil" the law not undo it. Fulfil, to cause to abound, bring it to realization. The prophecy for the messiah is that he would "magnify the law". So the examples of that in the new testament are; killing and adultery. Hateful anger without cause, is murder. You don't need a gun anymore. Thou shalt not kill is magnified into the internal dimension of the mind and heart. Tithing based on " agrarian increase" is expanded to all your increase. .
---jhonny on 1/11/07

2 of 2 Some catagories for increase are;
wisdom, time, lips. Could we say God wants a tithe of the product that comes out of your lips. Thankfulness opens the gates of heaven. There is more to our increase than cash. The foundational principle of tithing is: God wants to be first in your life.
---jhonny on 1/11/07

Fred, test the Word. Tithe on every thing and see what God has in store for you. He has promised that his word will not return to him void, but will accomplish what it says it will.
---faye4464 on 1/10/07

Gene, Psalm 1:1 "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly," I'm not sure what Bible you are reading but it doesn't sound anything like the one I read. It sounds more like something you've been taught. If you are not giving God 10% of all your increase you are missing out on may blessings. Not just financial, but blessings that are ours for being obedient to His Word.
---faye4464 on 1/10/07

Since the tithe is OT, on grain rather than wages, never instituted as a law from what I've read, and superceded by the new covenant in the NT, it is therefore, a lie!
In other words, you are NOT supposed to tithe, or give 10% of you earnings regardless of who you are. Google tithe and read the numerous good writings on the topic.

Kathy, you are right about tithing our time. The word says to tithe on all our increase and we increase 24 hours everyday.
---faye4464 on 1/1/07

Fred. If you are poor it is you who the church should be helping out, not the other way around.
For those who still believe in law titheing, Jesus taught discipleship, which is, go and sell everything you have and give to the poor.

I put my trust into the Lord that he will provide after I tithe. He supplys all of my needs in Philippians 4:19. And I also know it says in the word in Malachi 3:10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there maybe food in my house and prove me now in this says the Lord of hosts If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to recieve it. and I stay obiedent to the Lord and he does take care of all of my needs. I do not tithe to a church, I give my time to Jehovah G-d in many ways, learning his word, going out & giving his word, helping others even if funds aren't possible . I give my money tithe where he directs me. It could be an orphanage, or a local ministry pantry, but he still blesses my family.

I have been in the position of barely able to tithe, still did & found that the blessings of tithing have helped make all available when I thought not. People think of tithing with the pocket book as all God wants but he wants your time too. What ever is not avaiable from your purse is available in the gifts you've received which should be used to glorify His name. Ex: A gift for kids then I give time to ministering to them in Sunday children's church.
---kathy3336 on 1/1/07

faye4464, Jesus did not tithe, nor did he ask any money before he ministered to people, but instead he ministered freely. "I came not to undo the law, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth pass, one mandate or one point will not fail from the law, until all happen." And we know that Jesus fulfilled the law, even to death on the cross, and cried, "It is finished."
---Eloy on 1/1/07

A simple study of tithing would reveal it was a civil law designed to provide necessities to the tribe of Levi since they did not have the land to provide for themselves after they had arrived in the promised land. The tithe was from the other nine tribes and was of the excess of the seed of the earth, the fruit of the tree, the flock and the herd. Since Jesus was a carpenter, what would he have tithed? Every tenth chair. The tithe was never money.
---Buzz on 12/31/06

Tithes applied principally to agricultural produce. Jesus remarked that the Pharisees were very scrupulous about paying such tithes even on the herbs of their gardens--but were ignoring virtues such as justice and mercy.

faye4464, of what would Jesus have tithed? Was He a farmer? Was He a cattle rancher? He was a jewish carpenter and a Rabbi. So according to the Law what would He have tithed? And where in scripture does it say He tithed?

Ryan, where does the Bible say that Jesus didn't tithe?
Jesus said he did not come to do away with the law but to fulfill it.

Bernardo, Good question. One of my favorites is, 'If tithing is so foundational to the New Testament Church, why didn't Jesus tithe?'
---Ryan on 12/29/06

Ryan, I toldy agree with what you are saying. I do believe that we must give whether it bountifully or sparingly, because that's what determines your harvest. I'm new to this site, but there are many questions that I would like to post to the ''Tithers''. If tithing 10% is manditory, why didn't Paul teach all the churches that were established under him?

The Bible says to tithe on all your increase. I've found that when I didn't tithe, (whether I forgot or thought I didn't have it)I never had enough to go around. But when I started tithing on ALL my increase HE never failed to supply every need. When someone gives me books, I give away at least 10% of them. If someone gives me clothes I give away at least 10% of them. HE ALWAYS supplies.
---faye4464 on 12/22/06

Tithes is not nessacarily money if you you do not have money you can tithe 10% of your time or your Crops but if you have any income at all you should always pay 10% I dont think that is a bad deal God allows you to keep 90% especially when you give Irs their hunk of change once a year cause tithes into the storehouse you are robbing him and you will not be blessed but don't tithe because Gods Word says to Tithe with a Cheerful heart

It makes me sad that several people have make comments that I gave grudgingly when I didn't have enough money to pay my bills. No one knows my heart but God, and He knows I never gave grudgingly. I gave joyfully to the point where I ignored my bills piling up, believing that God would provide the money to pay them. God wants us to use common sense and take care of our responsibilities. We are not to live by the letter of the law. If we do, we are no better than the Pharisees.

For those of you who have been so blessed by tithing maybe you should bless those who are poor and without in your congregation. Scripture says we are to do good to those especially the household of faith. Let love rule not demands, I think thats the Jesus way. If you show people you care more about their spirit and not their pocket book they will learn to give in faith and more heartily. If they are drowning in debt and all they hear is how they have to tithe or else.I don't see Love in that.

Mrs. Williams, why not tithe your time to the church? Bulletins, church functions, cleaning....

Lucy, I have never given grudgingly. I thought I was following God's leading. Maybe I HAVE given out of fear because of what I had been taught about tithing, that if I didn't give EXACTLY 10%, I was going to be "robbing God". I am not angry, just confused right now. I feel guilty if I don't 10% of my income, but in order to give 10%, I don't have enough money left to pay bills and buy food. I really need God's guidance. Thank you all for your responses. Thank you R.A. for your support. :)
---Mrs._Williams on 12/6/06

Mrs. Williams, are you tithing out of fear? Because I thought you were going to put food on the table and pay bills. Are you listening to someone on TV? "You need to sow an uncommon seed to get an uncommon result." That type of thing? I'll wait for your answer.
---R.A. on 12/6/06

Mrs. Williams, if you went down to the corner gas station every day, purchased a couple scratch tabs; with hope you're going to win the big pot - you could easily lose your paycheck. The bible is clear about taking care of our family.
---R.A. on 12/6/06

You don't need money to give to God. Give your heart and soul to God 100%. If you think you have to give money to get money, then money is your focus of worship. Re-examine your purpose for tithing. You can give your time and your talents. they were given to you by God. Just give what he already gave you with love and appreciation for what you have. A tithe is not cash, and a blessing from God is not cash.

1)Mrs Williams, you are right, there is no magic formula, and if that is the approach in which tithing is done, then God is not in it. When done because you are led by the Holy Spirit to do so, that is the key, not by legalism. I KNOW God convicted me in this area at one time even though I did not have enough $ for bills even without tithing.
---Christina on 12/6/06

2) I tithed first when I knew it was HIS leading, and started to recieve blessing like someone filling my tank with oil, someone paying a bill for me, someone sending anonymous $ every month for twice what I tithed. To get back was not the motive, it was obedience to God.
---Christina on 12/6/06

the reason why yuor having difficulties with your tithing Mrs William is that you didnt give with all your must have given grudgingly..God dont want money given that way..if you keep moaning about your financial situation and not commit it into God's hands, you will never see the true blessings as I give willingly and believe God will supply for your needs..I continue to get this blessings everyday.

JJ, that wasn't the case for our dear Ms. Wms. If you read her testimony, she was tithing. Every situation is different, just like our fingerprints.
---R.A. on 11/28/06

Maybe the reason why people don't have much money is because they stopped putting God first in all, including tithing. I know when I didn't pay tithes, I was about to lose everything I had. And my utilites were about to be turned off. I started paying tithes again, and things are going good. Sometimes I have money left over for my wants. But God always provides a way for my needs. Tithing is between you, spouse and God, and no one else. If a person listens to man, they will fail everytime.

The reason why some people are burdened to tithing is that they are bad budgeters.God's portion should be put away first. probably didnt understand what it is for, and are easy targets 4 unruly pastors. You dont give to pastor without understanding any of it.Tithing is of ones free will to give. God loves a cheerful giver, not a grumbly giver. If you dont want to give, then dont for God knows your heart. But helping others is also that.;

Helen, under what law are you referring to? Tithing is mentioned in Luke 11:42 and 17:11-12. Tithing is a matter of giving back to God what He has given us. A person who doesn't even have enough to pay their bills or feed their children can do things for others. Tithing is giving of one's self. I think it is something between you and the Lord.
---Norma7374 on 11/26/06

I knew someone who tithed because of pressure from her pastor. She had to borrow money to pay her household bills. The relative from whom she borrowed this money wants nothing to do with 'church' now because of this. It is not robbing God to pay our dues to society, our local authority, the tax man, the greengrocer etc. God knows what we have and what we can afford to give and whether or not we are being honest and generous. It's no-one else's business.
---m.p.a. on 11/26/06

Mrs. Williams, I have thought about your answer many times. This could be applied to the prosperity doctrine theory, that "if you build it, they will come." If you tithe, the money will pour in. Your testimony reveals something else. Thank you.

Mrs. Williams, it also reminds me of the elderly that give from their small pensions, with very little to live on. His anger rages on for manipulators that become rich.

Abraham was the first person recorded in the Bible who tithed. He gave a tenth of all he had to Melchizedek, a priest with no beginning and no end as the Bible states. This was over 400 years even before the law was given, and we are children of Abraham not subject to the law (Gal). This is not a law, but an act of faith. Giving to God and believing He will meet our needs regardless of our circumstances. Not giving to get, but giving to bless. Even Paul said give in order to pay those in the ministry.

I understand how hard it can be to tithe. I'm a single mother an money can be tight at times, espeically with having a daughter that went through two years of cancer. I tithe in different ways. One can tithe in gifts God gave them. I will make dinner for my neighbor who works or clean her house, do things to help others in more need than I. Remember the women in the Bible that gave all she had. At times I have given all that I had it was not ten percent but it was all I had to give.
