What does this scripture mean exactly? Matthew 9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

God will not give young believers tasks that are more suited for old believers. Because they may become discouraged. And Satan would have a field day with the young believers. >>>Bottles were frequently used in the ancient East as liquid containers. The strength of fermentation of the new wine would be too much for the partly worn, old, or inelastic [not adaptable] skin and would cause them to break.

. (ii)As it says every thought in mans head is an evil one. Unless we allow our minds to be transformed and renewed by this world, and depart from evil, we will never be able to come into and hold onto the understanding of the wisdom of god. Job 28: 28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

I had to go to my M.H.C. for this one.==Christ's disciples were not able to bear these severe exercises so well as those of John and of the Pharisees. The weakness and infirmity of young Christians ought to be considered. Young beginners in Religions must not be put upon the hardest duties at first, lest they be discouraged.+++Christ's care of the little ones of His family, and the Lambs of His flock. He gently leads them.

Boy do we love to ram the context into the brambles. The context; fasting - but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

The disciples did not have yet a "new covenant" nor were they filled with the Holy Spirit. These things are evident from their spiritual autism (can I sit at your right hand) and the fleeing at his arrest.

John's and the Pharisee's disciples fast and mourn penitently to draw close to God, the disciples have him.

Donna::Jesus came to give us a new Doctrine.Juadism was an old concept & not able to contain the Spiritual Freshness Of Jesus Doctrine,Hence the comparison of Juadism to the old bottle & Jesus the New Wine (VINE)Grace the new wine cannot be poured or Sewed into an old system of Legalism.Rather than Patch an old obsolete system.Jesus gives us a new System(New(bottled) Doctrines)with a new system His new life in Himself. This is my Body & Blood eat & drink of Me to have eternal life.

The Holy spirit cannot dwell in the old worn out filthy vessel we once were. After our rebirth The Spirit of God can reside in us and expand . If we were to remained the same it would be impossible for the Holy Spirit to dwell in us, in our former state. the same occurs If you were to sew a new cloth to an old cloth the strength would be compromised because of the strength of the new against the Old making them incompatible.

Leslie's and earl's response were the closest to what I was taught. I was taught that you can't put the Holy Spirit into an old wineskin. The old wineskin represented our old nature, the new wineskin represented the Holy Spirit. So you need a new wineskin to fill with the Holy Spirit because the old one will burst.

I think the new wine is the teachings of Christ. Those believing in the old Testiment(old bottles)could not accept the teachings of CHRISTS' New Covinent(new wine). Thus you must be born again to accept(hold stedfast)the teachings of CHRIST.

This verse speaks of covenants. We also find it in Mark 2 and Luke 5. This teaching is a warning not to blend covenants. The old refers to the covenant of law and the new refers to the covenant of grace. The words I find most interesting are:

Luk 5:39 "And no one, after drinking old {wine} wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good {enough.}'"

How many people today say they don't need Christ because they have the law, and the law is good enough.

Christ is trying to present new new constructs of thinking and using the folly of patching old garment with new cloth and new wine in old skins to illustrate his point. The Jews were clinging to old constructs of "Tradition" and the "Law" and He is trying to get them to understand that you can't mix his new concepts with old concepts, some time you just have to abandon the old and practice his new better way.

Earl, that was absolutely excellent how you described it

New wine represents the Holy Spirit, and the wineskins represent us as humans.

greetings.Neither do men put new wine(revelation) into stagnant vessels;else the stagnant vessels break, and the revelation runneth out, and the bottles perish;but they put (revelation )into unstagnant vessels(those who are receptive),and both are preserved.----Traditions of men (established religion ,doctrines, cerimonies and creeds)are very difficult to lay aside for new truth.Jesus makes sure that revelation will never cease by the functioning of his spirit of truth.

Jesus was showing that it was inappropriate for his disciples to fast while he was with them. When is mourning appropriate for a time of joy?

Fasting and mourning go hand in hand; I can't recall a time that I've been deeply grieved that my usually healthy appetite wasn't effected.

New wine/old skins, don't go together neither do harsh spiritual disciplines fit well with those who are weak in faith.
---Pharisee on 2/13/07

This passage refers to the skin flask that wine was put it during these times.
New wine was always put into a new flask because as the wine worked the flask would swell.
The old flasks had reached their limit and if filled to capacity they would swell and burst. If they were not filled to capacity the wine would spoil and be no good.

(i)Simple put, It is speaking of the renewing of ones mind. Now that we are In Christ we are new creatures and are not to be conformed to this world any more but to be transformed by it through the renewing of our minds, so we are able to hold the understanding of Gods wisdom.
