Do I Need A Bible

My sister and I are having a friendly disagreement. I just became a new Christian and she's not, yet. She said that I don't need my Bible, and I can get along fine without it. She said the Spirit alone will guide me without the Bible at all. What do you say? Do we need Bibles?

It's pretty shakey.

Duet 29:19-21 -If anyone should think to himself, "I will do well enough if I follow the dictates of my heart," Yahweh will not pardon him. His wrath shall burn against him. And all the curses written in the book will come upon him."

There are A LOT of curses written in that book. Losing your animals, illness, boils, fire, brimestone, floods, famine, dead first bornes, frogs, locusts: all coming your way. Do you think you're lucky punk? Well... do ya?

the Bible is the Word and the Truth.
It is our guidline on how to live and how be all that God wants of us.
To truly serve the Lord and show God how much we love Him, we need to listen to Him.
And that is the Bible. His word. the Living Word.
---lisa on 12/11/07

The word says that the kings of Israel were to keep a copy of the law at their side and read it whenever they had a chance. It says we are priests and kings unto our God. What was good for them should be good for us as well.
Those who don't wish to read the word or hear a sermon probably won't want to go to heaven where an angel preaches the everlasting gospel eternally.
---Frank on 12/11/07

You need to tell your sister (like Jesus told Peter) "GET BEHIND ME SATAN!" Her telling you that you don't need a Bible is Satan telling you lies. The Bible is an essential, vital, and necessary weapon in a Christian's life. You cannot servive without it. It is the Sword of the Spirit (a literal sword in the spirit realm).
---Leslie on 12/11/07

in my own personal reading today i read this
Hosea 4: 6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me, Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children." to reject the Bible for your own personal revilation is damnation. thats the path of the JW's and LDS. if what your getting from the spirit world doesnt match up with the word you need to reject it out of hand.
---Kraus on 12/11/07

Ps 119:9 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.
God says you need a Bible to live right. since He inspired the word it takes nothing away from Him that we need it. in the last day the books will be open and we will be judged by whats in that book. read it live by it.
---Kraus on 12/11/07

Brian, I think the same thing. duane is of another persuasion, Persia. I believe he has copied our dialogues to appear Christian. Every now and again, he lets one slip. Like, "confusion is not sin". Completely contrary to the Word of God. God is not the Author of confusion.
---Fran on 12/11/07

Duane: You said all is not clear, this is why we read/study the word, so the Holy Ghost can make it clear to us. We don't need the bible itself, we need what is inside the bible..the word. Is this what you're saying?
---Rebecca_D on 4/4/07

Duane, are you a Catholic? It was not obvious from the posts I have seen from you.

I grew up hearing that all Protestants knew the Bible very well by Chapter and Verse, and that Catholics knew the Bible in more general terms from hearing it every week.

This site has been an eye opener.
---lorra8574 on 4/4/07

Abraham had no Bible&was saved by his faith(Rm4:3).Isn't it true for anyone without Bible?

Christians in history(&some now)didn't have Bibles&gospel&were saved.Rom 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.Gal.5:16-18 says we're led by the Spirit&many other verses.

I'm surprised your sister would even know the Spirit can guide us alone(she's right). We don't need the Bible. But we don't need eyes either.Yet I'd rather have them than do without them.
---Sheila on 4/4/07

Duane, you can depend on your "revelations" from whatever Spirit is around you from now on, but heed this warning, "The Holy Spirit will never tell you don't need His word. The Holy Spirit always draws us to His word and not away." Our eternal souls are at stake. Test the Spirit leading you Duane, for your soul's sake. Please!
---Matthew on 4/4/07

...God gave us all the scripture to help us grow. I want to read and love to read the bible. As we read scripture, all is not clear at times with certain passages, ect. We need the Holy Spirit as our guide. Its really all HIM. All Im saying is, its not the bible I need, it is God I need. If I have HIM, I will have the Word. As I have said, I need nothing but Jesus...
---duane on 4/4/07

Duane: your response to Torra is all true, and I agree. But you wouldn't have known that if you hadn't read the bible. So you need it to understand and teach others about God's word. You say you read the bible, and you love reading the bible. But yet you don't need it. The bible is God's word. So are you saying you don't need God's word? Are you that righteous that you don't need God's word (bible) anymore? Jesus is the word, so if you need Jesus you need the word (bible).
---Rebecca_D on 4/3/07

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Lorra, I did not know this was a battle between Catholics and Protestants. You also have PRIDE. You just revealed your true self.
---Bob on 4/3/07

My dear lorra,
I never said scripture had no value...silly
The Bible is what I love to read and all Saints should read it....BUT is it a need? that is the question. Ponder that, and see what you get. I need nothing but Jesus. His word is in me.
Now lets move on, I wont change anyones mind, and you wont change mine.

Duane, before the New Testament was compiled, they were hearers of the Word through oral tradition and through the epistles that were read to them when they gathered. Col 4:16; 1 Thess 5:27.

I repeat, the Holy Spirit is NOT the only spirit whispering into the ears of men.

See also Titus 1:15-16.

I suppose it was inevitable that a Catholic would have to teach a Protestant on the value of Scripture.
---lorra8574 on 4/2/07

duane is stuborn and just want's to win an argument or maybe any argument. We won't let you win, duane. God will win no matter what efforts you use. It's kind of interesting though, to see you spinning your wheel and getting nowhere. Have you told God that you don't need the Bible?
---Debbie on 4/2/07

If you say that you do not need the Bible, your not born again. You need to be transformed. And if you are not Born Again, then your advice and opinions on spiritual matters is useless. It's as simple as that.
---Jeff on 4/2/07

Now your question is a good one...
The lord sent the Holy Spirit into the world
as our comforter and teacher and we are to be led of the Spirit. The lord will speak for us and through us with the word of peace and reconciliation to all mankind.
Faith will come to those by hearing of the word.
Before the Gospels were written in the bible, many were saved...Hows that? the Holy Spirit through man.
We need nothing but JESUS

Duane, Jesus is our Saviour, not the scriptures, not any church. But, what would you know of Jesus without the scriptures? Or without a Church to spread the Good News?
---lorra8574 on 4/1/07

There is three books in the Bible that Satan especially hates, and here they are---1-Genesis.---2-Daniel.---3-Jonah. Don't you just love it.

Imagine someone with a paper bag over their head sitting down with you to speak with you. My response would be "take that paper bag off so I can know who I am talking too."
---Matthew on 4/1/07

Duane remember the Spirit of God NEVER contradicts HIs word. So Test the Spirit leading you. It's trying to get you to where you believe "you don't need the Bible". By doing this the Spirit knows you can can't TEST it and instead you will just believe it. Test it Duane, please. Test it with God's word.

I am talkin to Christians when I say we need nothing but Christ...Christ (word) lives in us now. He will lead me, teach me ect. I NEED NOTHING but Him, Without Him there is no Christianity.
I wont dethrone Him...
The bible has its place, but not above God
---duane on 4/1/07

Duane: Yes, "there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Act 4:12). But the question is; "saved from what?" Jesus was to save us FROM our sins. If we continue in our sins, then we are not saved. How do we know what sin is without the definitions given in scripture? Jesus used scripture to thwart the devil. Why shouldn't we?
---jerry6593 on 4/1/07

Duane please listen to what people have been telling you. You are being deceived. Reject whatever Spirit is leading you and turn to God and His word. To reject scripture is to reject Jesus because Jesus is the Word of God(John 1). Duane if you continue in that belief you are going to reach a point where scripture no longer affects you. To where you depend on what the Spirit leading you revealed before going to God's word. It is dangerous terittory Duane. For the sake of your soul please turn to the Bible!
---Matthew on 4/1/07

Duane: I know the Holy Ghost (spirit) is our teacher. Without the spirit teaching us, we wouldn't be able to understand the bible. The bible itself won't save anyone but the words do. the words in the bible have alot of power behind them. We need God's word, to help us understand his word. If one thinks they don't need God's word, they are being decieved. I'm not confused at all. God speaks to me everytime I read his word. My bible which is God's word is my sword.

I proclaim Jesus only....We need nothing but Jesus.
But some in here deny that.
I say repent and judge not

---duane on 3/31/07

Rebecca and Matthew,
To claim we need anything but Jesus is absurd
Who saved us?
The bible will save no one...It can help us in our lives and lead many to God but has no power of its own except through Christ.
The Holy Spirit is our teacher, which you dont seem to understand.
No wonder the church is so confused, with so many denominations. Christians cant even agree. Gods not the author of confusion.
---duane on 3/31/07

Lorra: Your statement - "the Holy Spirit is not the only spirit out there" - is the most profound yet, and is at the heart of the current issue. We are all influenced by both God's spirit and Satan's. God's Spirit will always agree with the Bible. That's how we tell them apart.

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

I reiterate, "Study to show yourself honorable to God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, dividing the word of truth justly. Knowing the holy scriptures are able to make you wise onto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." II Tim.2:15; 3:15.

Duane; if you think you don't need the bible, then why read it at all? You've said you read it more than some, but yet you don't need it. It isn't a need to read the bible, but a desire. Which you don't have. We can judge you righteously, and we are. The author of the bible is God, man may have wrote the books, but every word is inspired by God. Maybe you don't understand God's word and that is why you say you don't need his word (bible).
---Rebecca_D on 3/30/07

Duane do you flee from the Bible because it goes against your beliefs? Rhetorical question.

As a Catholic, I acknowledge that we need more than the Bible, and Jesus is first and foremost. But, in order to recognise Jesus, we need His Holy Word as recorded in the scriptures. I also rely upon the guidance of the Holy Spirity, as does my Church, but the Holy Spirit is not the only spirit out there. The Bible helps us to recognise the true spirit from the deceivers.

Even now, the way that the RCC judges apparitions and inner locutions (inner voices), is to compare them against scripture.

Jesus is the Word. To deny the need for the Word is to deny Jesus.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. . . . He was in the world, . . . and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

Who do we worship??...The Author or His message.

The Spirit comes from the Word of God. If you have no Word of God, you have no Spirit. Why else do you think the enemy tries so very very hard to get rid of the Holy Bible and publish his own books full of lies and mistitles them "Holy Bible" when they are not the Word of God? It is because he does not want anyone to get saved, so he does his best to keep people away from the Holy Bible and away from the truth.
---Eloy on 3/29/07

The Bible contains truth about God. On the last days, many will be deceived, even the elite, because of lack of knowledge, of the Word of God.

The Holy Spirit will help/teach us to understand the Word of God. No one can understand the Word of God without the Holy Spirit. Remember Matthew 24:35 - Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.
---agnea on 3/29/07

My contention is, I dont believe I NEED the bible. To say so, would deny God His power.
HE is my strength, HE is my teacher...I put nothing before God.
The bible tells us about God, its not our God.
---duane on 3/29/07

duane, it's not about: "Would we remain Christian if we didn't have the Bible". Everyone here is talking about once your Born Again, needing the Bible for healty spiritual growth. You don't know much about being a Christian, do you? The reason is, you don't read the Bible or not much at all. Because you have this idea that you are the only one on planet earth that doesn't need the Bible, and gets all of his information about the entire New and Old Testiments directly from God. Not buying it.
---Mike on 3/29/07

You can have a Phd. in bible studies and know nothing. The bible was written in Spirit and can only be understood if the Spirit abides in the man that reads it.

duane, your making up your own rules. You can never come to the fullness God has for you without studying His Word. Like I said, "Your making up your own rules". God doesn't work one way for some and another way for others when it comes to Spiritual growth. Your not really hearing the Spirit of God if you think otherwise. So it doesn't matter what you think or say on this issue. Your not God. Also if you knew the Bible, you would know that we are required to judge all spiritual things.
---Paul on 3/29/07

duane, you said: "The Bible, which you don't need?" COME ON DUANE, THAT'S NOT THE MARK OF A CHRISTIAN. Jesus said, which is in the "BIBLE", You will know them by their fruits, so it means nothing what you say. Most of us recognize the problem with your thinking. Not a problem for us, you'll believe what you want, but a problem for you eventually. Like someone said, " God will catch up with you on this matter, eventually."

Question..Could you remain a Christian without a bible?
---duane on 3/29/07

You don't have to read the Bible, but if you don't, you will not grow much, if at all. There is another very important reason why we should be in the Bible on a regular basis, to find out what God has for us personally, to do for Him. God will show you if you search and pray. And then, LISTEN. And then, OBEY HIM.
---Brian on 3/29/07

I am not saying that if you don't read the Bible regularly, that your not saved, but you can't grow as a Christian if you don't. I get my instructions from the Bible which is Holy Spirit inspired. But if you say you don't need the Bible, your not transformed yet (Born Again). A lot of people died so we could have the Bible as it is today, and one of them was Jesus. God said that His Word will endure forever.

duane you have a problem. You don't get it, therefore you cannot be Born Again. By the way, yes, the Holy Spirit leads me to and through God's Word by the reading of the Bible.

The Holy Spirit would NEVER tell anyone that we don't need the Bible.

Anything else is from the devil.
---John6747 on 3/29/07

I love it when I see someone who is following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Why Jesus died. The coaxing of the Holy Spirit Gina, is exactly when I read the Bible. Isn't it ashame some of these religious nuts don't understand the coaxing of the Holy Spirit. Don't let anyone tell you when to read the Bible, when to go to church if ever, OR WHAT TO EAT OR WHAT TO WEAR OR whatever. DON'T do it please. God is the boss of every true Christian. Not man. God is the one that died on that CROSS.
---catherine on 3/29/07

I think you have your answer embedded within your question: your sister is not a Christian. Sometimes the people closest to us are unfortunately the people who can do the most damage to our relationship with Christ, if they are not believers. Don't give up on her or love her less; I would never suggest that. However, it is important that you keep on guard with anyone who would try to avert your relationship with the Lord. Praise Him always.
God bless.
