Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. Psalm 42:5-6a

Start praising God even at this time and your joy will increase.

1 Peter 4:12-13. Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you. (VS 13) But rejoice, insomuch as yea are partakers of Christ's sufferings that when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. I was going through a terrible time and I stood firm on these verses. On all the scriptures you get from other people, stand firm and strong on God's word. For God's word is his promise.

Encouragement from the Bible:
The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? Ps 27:1
For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. II Tim 1:7
I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. Phili 4:13

Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. ...
(Psalms 25:1-7)

Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises.

Becky, all of the Psalms are an encouragement. Proverbs is edifying and great instruction for every day living.
If you have a Bible, start at the beginning of Psalms and read/meditate, one by one. You will find your own favorites, and will want to go back and read them over and over.
Make the decision to begin, it will bring you much comfort.

Thanks Susie and Rebecca for sharing. Are there any psalms or proverbs for encouragement?
---becky on 3/13/07

I will paraphrase my favorite verse when I am troubled or grieving. Weeping endures for a night, but JOY comes in the morning. Your time of distress will be over some day and you will be able to rejoice again. Thank God for the bad times. Without them we would not appreciate the good times.
