Can You Heal Yourself

A Christian man is in agreement with his daughter's theology that says on her website, "You can heal yourselves." When I tried to explain this is false doctrine, he shredded me to pieces. What would you tell someone who says, "You can heal yourself."

Physcian heal thyself. By his strips we are healed. Of course it is God's work, but we can help things along or slow things up depending on what we do.

Hi,yes good to see you brotherLuke god bless, yes their is a false doctrin heal they self?? I know some pentacostals swear by it but no one can heal save restor fix up or heal but God that's the truth.God healed me from cancer it surely was not me!thankyou Father God and my prayer is heal Sis.Rita too I got faith jesus will of Jesus!
---Elena95555 on 3/5/16

The healing of ones self is a Pentecostal doctrine not all Pentecostals but most of them. The ones who were healed by Jesus and the apostles was for the benefit of showing the power of God while they were bringing the gospel to the people they met. It had a purpose. Today, we are healed by the will of God. If we get surgery we make it by the will of God. You have to remember that God gives us our breath. He can stop that breath whenever He wants. If He wants you to be healed you will be healed one way or another. God is moving on others to come to our aid.
Even evil people keep living and get healed by the will of God. God is in control of all things. He is God.

\\Does this mean that our own faith does us no good?
---StrongAxe on 3/1/16\\

That's not what I'm saying at all.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 3/1/16

You wrote: Jesus healed sick children because of their PARENTS' faith.

Does this mean that our own faith does us no good?
---StrongAxe on 3/1/16

\\But God healing us according to our own faith, not someone else's.\\

Jesus healed sick children because of their PARENTS' faith.

Other sick people were brought to Jesus by their friends, who had the faith for him.

That's God healing because of someone else's faith.

Glory to Jesus Christ!
---Cluny on 2/29/16

Tell him "Please show me. May I stab you, and watch you heal yourself?". If he refuses, tell him he should first believe what he preaches before trying to teach it to others.
---StrongAxe on 2/29/16

We can not heal our selves. It is only God who heals. We are healed by our faith in His abilities. There are no scriptures for laying hands on ourselves. James says to call for the elders. You call. Use your faith. Laying on of hands of yourself is boarderline New Age Movement.
---Matt on 2/28/16

I'd say Amen...Christ said:

Matt 9:23 "But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, Be of good cheer, daughter, your faith has made you well. And the woman was made well from that hour."

Matt 9:29 "Then He touched their eyes, saying, According to your faith let it be to you."

Now, of course God is actually doing the healing, the point is, it's not some pastor with magical power. But God healing us according to our own faith, not someone else's.
---Todd1 on 5/27/08

People heal themselves all the time: The worldly take aspirin when they get a headache, and the spiritual also pray for themselves when they need God's healing. Medicines are good, and also anointing with oil and laying on of hands and saying the prayer of faith are also effective. I suggest if any one gets sick to first Call on the Lord God Jesus Christ through prayer and he is more than able to heal any and every infirmity.
---Eloy on 5/27/08

No, he is a lawyer, but not a practicing one.
---donna6598 on 5/27/08

God is always the one who does the healing, regardless of any other individual present or offering their prayers for the sick person. Obviously we can pray for our own healing and take control of our bodies staying as well as possible through our lifestyle and diet (and we should be doing this) but, ultimately, our healing is in God's hands.

Mark 16:17-18 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues, 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them, they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

What part of they will recover does anybody not understand?

I agree with this teaching. We have the same power to heal ourselves as any preacher or faith healer. When I don't feel well, I will lay hands on the area of my body that is sick and pray for healing. Yes-this is biblical. We need to start believing this and using the authority that Jesus has given us.
This is why there are so many weak Christians today. We don't realize the power that we have inside of us.
---Robyn on 9/7/07

We can heal ourselves through faith and if it is God's will. The woman that had the blood issue, Jesus told her that her faith healed her. But without faith it is impossible to please God.
---Rebecca_D on 8/24/07

I may6 be a bit naive and simplistic, but I thought that Jesus dies on the cross for our sins, to reconcile us to God, and to allow us to go to be with God when we die.
What's all this about Christ dying to cure our mortal ailments?
No we can't heal ourselves, but it is the skill of doctors, given by God, that mends broken bones and bodily illness.
---alan_of_UK on 3/29/07

Nobody can heal themselves. We can through Jesus Christ. I've had many surgeries, but the Dr didn't heal me. God gave them the knowledge on how to perform surgeries. In time my body healed, but it was through God Almighty. but I had to keep telling myself, just because the outside cut is healed doesn't mean the inside heals that quick.

If people could heal themselves, then Jesus would not have had to die on the Cross.
---Helen_5378 on 3/23/07

I believe that Christ instructed his apostles to heal the sick, and today we have to go along with the blessing of the ministry left in the hands of the church ministers to be able to ask, by faith for your healing from the word .Then believe by faith in order to receive your healing.
---Carla5754 on 3/23/07

DO you realize where doctors would be at today if it were not for God. They would not know anything. All knowledge come from GOD. Now, what we do with that knowledge is up to us. Some will do bad things with it.
---catherine on 3/22/07

AlwaysOn, thanks for your comments. I hope us true Christians can tell this is New Age theology that this Christian man is believing. This is the same man that came to my house, threw his hands up in the air and said some very hurtful things to me, his spirit of pride reared it's ugly head immediately. His own carnal lusts entice him and he blames it on others..."you seduced me." "you did this to me." Why do Christian men blame things like this on a Christian woman?

Can Doctors heal? What about unbelieving ones? If yes, how? If no, why do folk believe they can? Can they heal themselves when sick? Are atheists ever healed? If one believes doctors can heal, undoubtedly it's because of their training and education. If we as Believers strengthened by faith in Christ are also educated and trained, can we do the same? In Matthew 10:8, Christ instructed and empowered the apostles to heal the sick. Did this include themselves if they fell ill?
---AlwaysOn on 3/22/07

Donna, my other comment was written before reading you postings of what he'd written to you. While I can agree with some of what he said, a MAJOR red flag is that he stated they've discovered "God's secret of creation". Within the context of that one statement, even though we're still not privy to the whole story, I can definitely see your concern.
---AlwaysOn on 3/22/07

Post #1- I will post this man's entire response to me. This one contains his last comment to me. You will be able to tell his daughter is into NEW AGE theology. His son died using cleanses and natural herbs to be healed of cancer. He died Feb 4, 2006.
DONNA: My daughter does not lie. Within your INFERRED definition of what she said (for which she is not to be judged, since it is YOUR inferrence) she is wrong, but that is within your narrow window of interpretation.
---donna6598 on 3/21/07

Post 2 - My daughter's website: it is most directly a compassionate enumeration of the worldly methods (which God placed here) of addressing illness. Are we not to be compassionate to the UNBELIEVER who comes for help with their illness. Is it permissable to aid the unbeliever without first deciding that WE must minister to his soul, bring him to know Jesus, and then accelerate his faith to where he doesn't need worldly remedies? For the Word does not speak to the unbeliever.

Post #3- If the word of God does not speak to the unbeliever, (as this man said to me) then how come unbelievers such as the blind man, the man with leopracy, the woman with the issue of blood, all got healed because they "BELIEVED" as Jesus told them to??????
---donna6598 on 3/21/07

Post #4 - more of what this man said:

"...we have the POWER to heal.." is not a spiritual power of miraculous healing, and nothing in the text implies that in the least. The correct meaning IN CONTEXT is that we have discovered God's secrets of creation, and it is with this KNOWLEDGE that we have the power (read, ABILITY) to heal (read, REMEDY or CURE or TREAT) ourselves.
---donna6598 on 3/21/07

Post #5 If we were only to BELIEVE our way to constant health, why did He prescribe certain diets and cleanliness behavior in His word? Indeed, He knows we live in a fallen world and we must work and live within it. It is part of our challenge.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NEW AGE THINKING. ALL of what this man is saying is NEW AGE theology.
---donna6598 on 3/21/07

It's a well known fact that good food, herbs, and vitamins can heal people from all kinds of diseases. If that's what she means then I have no problem with it. We are, in many cases, responsible for our own sickness and likewise can be responsible for it's healing. Why would that be false doctrine?
---john on 3/21/07

Try healing an amputee! The best medical procedure is "prosthesis" altho they are experimenting with a hand transplant (but that is not healing) no doubt God can heal missing limbs, but not today, neither quadriplegics, nor Downs syndrome, Autism etc.. which makes me believe that today's so-called divine healing, is little more than psychosomatic!
---1st_cliff on 3/21/07

It is the power of God that heals us. When we believe what the word of God says and apply it to our own lives, we get our healing. Isaiah 53:05 says by his stripes we are healed.
---Emily on 3/21/07

We can no more heal ourselves than we can save ourselves from drowning... But Jesus Christ, HImself, is described as the Great Physician... and we can to boldly to Him, in faith, asking for His divine help. As we seek Him, He loves us and wants the best for each of us. For the truly believer in Christ as personal Savior and Lord, we have a precious Advocate who deeply loves and cares for each of us.

I'd like to know the context in which the words "You can heal yourself" were used.

Don't forget that Jesus didn't scruple to quote the proverb, "Physician, heal thyself," but He had a special reason--context--for doing so.
---Jack on 3/21/07

What do you mean you cant heal yourself...we all know that its God doing it, but your just allowing God to make it happen...thats what i get when first read taht statement...
---mark on 3/20/07

How did He shred you? You cannot heal yourself, better give God the glory if you know Him. If you don't know Him He is still the one that heals you. And it is not the Devil who heals. The devil would as soon kill you.
---catherine on 3/20/07

(iv)If they still wish to argue with you. Just know that the light that you are shining on their darkness is not comprehended by their darkness; this is why they are unable to receive the Word you are sharing. But the Word you share will be there in them for their day of redemption.

# 1 "You can heal yourselves" seems to say that we can heal ourselves without any other help, either of God, or of the medical profession ... in other words solely by our own strength.
This does sometimes appear to work .. say the athiest smoker, who beats his addiction by sheer will power.
---alan_of_UK on 3/20/07

# 2 As to psychological problems such as addiction, God can sometimes heal, without the input of the medical profession, but in many case he uses the medical profession to do His healing work.
That's logical, for why otherwise does He give us brains whereby we can learn how to be doctors?
---alan_of_UK on 3/20/07

# 3 As to physical afflictions and broken bodies, it is unlikely that God will, except in exceptional cases, perform a miracle mending. Again, why should He when we have been given, by God medical knowledge to be doctors dentists nurses & ambulance men?
---alan_of_UK on 3/20/07

Metaphysical healing is taking on many forms in the world today.
What is commonly known as mind cure, or Christian Science, is one of the most familiar forms of metaphysical healing. It is not healing by remedies, but by mental force. It places knowledge and intellect, or the mind of man in the place of God. It is a system of false philosphy and a skeptical theology; a philsophy that is deceptive and misleading.

# 4 I think the miraculous cures of Biblical times were of afflictions that the men of the time did not know how to cure. In other words the miracle was healing which was otherwise impossible at the time.
Logically I would expect today's miracles to be similar ... God intervening when man has no way of dealing with the problem.
---alan_of_UK on 3/20/07

# 5 I think that God has given us (the human race) medical knowledge over the years, and that He would not be pleased if we ignored that knowledge.
If we need money, God expects us to go out & get a job, not just wait for the dollars to land miraculously on the doorstep.
Same with healing.
---alan_of_UK on 3/20/07

Ask him for the scripture that says he can heal himself because there is no such scripture. If it's God's will and he has the faith, God may choose to heal him, but that is two ifs.

(iii)Let them know that all things come by the Word of God; and without him (the Word) was not any thing made that was made. In him and only in him is our eternal life; this life is the light of men. So we ourselves are not able to bring anything to past without Gods Word; Christ Jesus.

(ii) John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. "He shredded me to pieces",that in and of itself shows he may say it ,but a right person who is convinced of what they say doesn't have to "shred " anyone, the truth speaks for itself, and a lie speaks many words, attacks, and fails. I would say to them, only God heals, not a humanbeing,I'll pray for you to see God's truth ,then walk away.

You can if you know what you're doing, but consult a doctor. What i do is get the Dr's diagnosis & then I go buy the generic medicine or use herbal things or fruits/vegetables natures remides that donot go against the body, but ALWAYS check with a doctor, but you can heal yourself if done properly.
