When Is The Resurrection

Why do people think the resurrection is a future event? "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2 Cor. 5:1

Betty; Seriously, what is it that clouds your mind whan you read scripture? You cite 2 scriptures both indicating that the soul is in danger of death, then say it is eternal and will live forever regardless!!! Hello! Truely today means today and if you put the comma after the word and not before you will get the true meaning! Punctuation was not invented 'till the 14th century!

Catherine, are you suggesting that God will resurrect our body?
---Ryan_Z on 4/5/07

First lets look at what the Resurrection is.>>>A return to life, subsequent, [follow in time or order], to Death. ..To deny the Resurrection is to deny any immortality worthy of the character of our faith in God. ...The same power that made man's body at first out of common dust, can raise it out of its own dust. Now, on to the scripture... house not made with hands...Heaven is looked upon as a house. A building of God. [A house not made with hands.] Our Father's house, and everlasting home....

1stcliff... James5:20 ...will save his soul from death. Heb.10:39...but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul By the way, as far as I know, today means today, not in the future. The body is just the house you live in on this earth. The soul and spirit are eternal and will live in either heaven or hell depending on what you do with Jesus.

"Why do people think the resurrection is a future event?"

Because for man it is. The Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. And shall reign with Christ one thousand years "This is the first resurrection" But the rest of the dead will not live again until that thousand years is finished. Refs. 1 Thes. 4:16>Rev. 20:4,5. 2 Cor. 5:1 does not reference the resurrection.

.cliff, The day Jesus gave up his last breath on the cross is the same day he took the thief hanging on a cross next to him up to paradise. "Today you will be with me in paradise" is correct as it is written. Jesus' body stayed on the cross but his spirit went up to paradise. And after his death and resurrection, he also took his body back up to paradise. And very soon he will come again with his body, and every eye will see him and every ear will hear the coming of the Lord.

Catherine; You need to readjust your thinking because nowhere in the bible does it say "the soul never dies,is immortal or deathless"(Ez.18.4)
---1st_cliff on 4/4/07

Betty 8468; That is not what Jesus said to the thief, He said "Verily verily I tell you today, You will be with Me in Paradise" That day He was in the tomb Is that paradise? No ,What He was telling the thief was "future" sworn by His dieing day! Paradise here was not a Hebrew word but Persian meaning "park or garden" or Eden (Strong's Concordance)So when the paradise of Eden is restored Jesus promised the thief he would be there!

catherine, if your claim is true than when Jesus said, "Fear Him (God) who can destroy body and SOUL," He was lying? If the soul lives forever why does Jesus say it can be destroyed?
---Ryan_Z on 4/4/07

You are not a dead soul when you die. only a dead body. The soul shall never die. God has the power to take you to heaven or to throw you in Hell. The soul, your soul, any soul, shall never die. It will go on living either in heaven or in hell.
---catherine on 4/4/07

1stcliff... if you are a dead soul when you die, why did Jesus tell the thief on the cross next Him that,"today you will be with me in Paradise"?
---betty8468 on 4/4/07

are you saying that the soul remains in the body at death? and the individual is unaware of anything until the resurrection?
---jack on 4/3/07
The first part I don't think because the body dies, but the bible does say that He does not abandon His to Sheol, I sure am glad He will save me from that place and call me out in the RESURRECTION.
---Ryan_Z on 4/3/07

Jack; I'm saying what the bible says that you ARE (as opposed to having) a soul.( and man "became" not given a living soul Gen.2.7.) When you are alive you are a living soul ,when you are dead you are a dead soul, and only live again when you are resurrected!

1st_cliff, are you saying that the soul remains in the body at death? and the individual is unaware of anything until the resurrection?
---jack on 4/3/07

Resurrection means re-standing to life, you can only be resurrected after you die! The time interval between the two is "immaterial".To the individual it will seem instantaneous. Those who believe that something escapes the body at death and keeps on living "negates" the resurrection and has it's roots in pagan mythology like the Egyptins who "mummified" the dead so the "soul" could re-visit the body at will!

Are you talking about the resurrection or the rapture?
---Janet on 4/1/07

The general resurrection of mankind certainly lies in the future. It's one of those events that are indissolubly linked to the Return of Christ and the Final Judgement.

The Resurrection of Christ, however, while it is in the historical past, is an eternal, that is, timeless, event.
