i dont remember what book it was i read about it, maybe the book of Enoch. it said leviathan was a sea monster that God made to play in the oceans of the world. Supposdly he made it without a mate so they wouldnt take over or over hunt the waters and that this beast was killed and given to a people for food. none of this is credable but it goes with the lore. does anyone know more about this story?

Eloy. I had to read this a number of times to get it. I like it. I am interested how the erroneous diction brings something out.

I was in a tower when I seen him, and I seen Leviathan fall down from heaven into the sea with a mighty splash. And I went down in the tower and looked out, and I seen the feet of the armies struggling together back and forth on the seashore.

Isa 51:9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD, awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? (Hb.Taniyn,-taneen:-sea monster, serpent, dragon.)
Eph 5:14 "Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise.."

Leviathan (from lava= water, levi= law + athan), means, "sea dragon". One of the largest beasts created by God, and is used sometimes in scripture to refer to Satan or the devil.

Carl Wieland's book "Dragons of the Deep" proposes that Leviathan was a huge armoured croc called "Sarcosuchus". A writer to the premier creationist publication "Journal of Creation" came up with this idea independently. See "creation on the web dot com".

We use various mathematical formulae for measuring biological entities. I don't think this is the point.
Cynthia engaged Leviathan from an experiential viewpoint.
Cynthia quote:
"...they turned on you in rage, twisting and distorting your words around and hated you without cause."
The interpretation and observation of Leviathan would then be measured and tested at the spritual as opposed to biological.
Often we are dealing with reptillian monster crocadile pride for example.

Rebecca - good post.
Crocadile - Serpent = Reptillian

Good post Rebecca.
Crocadile - Serpent. Reptillian

Leviathan. This distinctly crocadile creature had characteristics we are not familliar with today. Regarding size, skeletal remains have been found in desert area. A man lied beside the head for perspective. The head was the size of the man.
Spiritually Leviathan is king over all the children of pride. Pride is a narcissistic dysfunction. Today this disorder is pandemic. In the last days men shall be lovers of their own selves. The fruits bear witness. They look religious.

I cannot imagine how Leviathan in Job refers to either a crocodile or whale. The description just doesn't fit. For example can crocodiles or whales be speared or hooked? Can they be subdued? Yes whales and crocodiles are commonly killed, and with the most primitive of weapons. Men even hunted the largest whales from rowboats with hand harpoons.

The description better fits a marine reptile such as a plesiosaur or chronosaur. It fits nothing alive today.

Depends what verse you're reading. In Job 41, it possibly could be a crocodile. And in Ps 104:25-27, as well. In Is 27:1 it is a serpant. The word Leviathan means jointed monster. I do know that God made it, Ps 104:26. I hoped that helped at least a little.

"Leviathan Principality is said to be responsible"

Cynthia , I think that just as there are levels of heaven, there may be levels of hel. I believe that Leviathan are found in one level of hell where the wicked in the sea of th Deep in Sheol are located . They are dragon like monsters which torture those who are sent there . They are also called The Kings of Terror in Job 18:12-21 . They have another name too but I can't remember it.

I agree with Anthony. It is some type sea creature that God was referring to in Job.I did a short study on it as well. A few years ago. I am still pondering over that one. I think it symbolizes strength and power. God was making a point to Job when he used that word. Can't say for sure.

Leviathan in Job is most likely a currently unidentified dinosaur-type sea creature (marine reptile.) There were probably leviathans buried during the Great Flood like all of the other creatures, so maybe one day a paleontologist will discover a massive, fossilized coiled sea serpent. I suspect sailors have encountered leviathans over the centuries, but did not survive to tell of contact with such a violent creature.

This word is also used figuratively for a cruel enemy, as some think "the Egyptian host, crushed by the divine power, and cast on the shores of the Red Sea" (Ps. 74:14). As used in Isa. 27:1, "leviathan the piercing [R.V. 'swift'] serpent, even leviathan that crooked [R.V. marg. 'winding'] serpent," the word may probably denote the two empires, the Assyrian and the Babylonian.

Part 1 of 2
Easton's Bible Dictionary
Topics: Levi'athan

Text: a transliterated Hebrew word (livyathan), meaning "twisted," "coiled." In Job 3:8, Revised Version, and marg. of Authorized Version, it denotes the dragon which, according to Eastern tradition, is an enemy of light; in 41:1 the crocodile is meant; in Ps. 104:26 it "denotes any large animal that moves by writhing or wriggling the body, the whale, the monsters of the deep."
---Phil_the_Elder on 5/14/07

Leviathan I believe is a false killer whale. They are huge.

Have you ever said something to someone in total innocence, then they turned on you in rage, twisting and distorting your words around and hated you without cause. Well this Leviathan Principality is said to be responsible, and I am wanting to know more about what people have heard on the tactics Leviathan is responsible for in Christians today.
