The first century CE church was with in the life times of Apostles and you will find accounts of Christian life in the writings of Paul, James, Peter, James, and John the Elder. For second Century you will need to look at non-Canon source documents the writings of Justin Martyrr is a good reliable source. Also look up the writings of Ignatius, Aristides, Polycarp, Tatian, Melito, Athenagoras, Irenaeus, Theophilus, Minucius Felix, & Tertullian.

We have plenty of writings of first century Christians. Their worship service was Eucharist-centered, not sermon-centered.

Here's what they would find different:
1. our clothing. 2. our language.
Here's what they would find the same:
1. our doctrine. 2. our practice - singing, praying, and preaching.

Here's what they would not find:
1. musical instruments, 2. sunday school, 3. church programs. 4. entertainment for the masses.

Lord bless each of you,

If the Apostles came the some of these churches they would not endure those false doctrines as some you preach. For one thing the Aposltes knew that Jesus was God and that the fulness of the Godhead dwells in him. They also taught you can only be saved if you repent and be baptized in the NAME OF JESUS for the remission of sins and filled with the HOLY GHOST as evidence of speaking in other toungues and the spirit gives utterance. We are to teach what the Apostles taught and anyting else would be error!

1st Cliff, so your converts call you "Father"? It is appropriate if you are the one through whom they found Christ, Paul considered the ones he baptised into Christ to be his spiritual children, but I thought that Protestants did not like that usage.

Try 25-30 years Jack! So your converts call you "father"?
---1st_cliff on 6/17/07

Jack ;First of all they were not "my" converts, and like your medieval thinking "If you don't like the message, shoot the messenger".**

Yes, they are. And how many are persevering six months--or even one month--later?

If they attended my Church in North America they would be thrilled to know that they were not going to be arrested while worshipping in public. And they would like the air conditioning. Other than that, they would probably find it quite similar.

** Mima; I have done much house to house preaching, in some places like NY City talking to an eye thru a peephole!**

In other words, you're using the Name of Jesus as an excuse to be obnoxious.

I wonder how many of your converts "got saved" just to get rid of you?
---Jack on 6/15/07

Mima; I have done much house to house preaching, in some places like NY City talking to an eye thru a peephole! I have been threatend, dogs sicked on me but some listened and are now Christians. Not preaching crucifiction and forgiveness only but as Jesus admonished us Mat.24.14. the gospel of the Kingdom!

** read it jack,**

I did. I was simply describing something similar.

Their activity looks something like this:Acts 5:42 "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." What did they preach about Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ crucified for their sins, and forgiveness was available. That was the main crux of the message. And that message still works today!!! Have you ever been house to house preaching Jesus Christ?

It looks like they broke bread regularly. Paul instructed the prophets to speak and the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be used in the service. Also for everyone to have the chance to speak. He instructed speaking and singing with the understanding and in the spirit without the understanding. Sounds very charismatic and much like the services in our church today.

I really don't care. I love my church and I would go with that. I am sure a lot of differences would be apparent. I focus on Jesus, that's the most important thing. You should, too.

Jeremiah had a glimpse of this new era:

"The time is coming," declares the Lord,
"when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant
I made with their forefathers
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they broke my covenant,
though I was a husband to them,"

declares the Lord.

"This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel
after that time," declares the Lord.
"I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
No longer will a man teach his neighbor,
or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,'
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,"

declares the Lord.

"I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more."
(Jeremiah 31:31-34)
Joel prophesied of the Day

"I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
... and everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved...."
(Joel 2:28-29, 32)

We are to appreciate the gracious position we have in the Kingdom of God, and the ability to see things that even prophets could not see. We are not to take this for granted.
We are to seek God earnestly that we do not miss His purpose for our lives, as the Pharisees did.
We are to accept the fact that people will say all sorts of things about us, and determine not to be moved by it. That no matter what anyone says about us, our place in God's kingdom will ultimately be vindicated.

What pop-evangelicals do bears no resemblance to how the first century Church worshipped.

The Bible speaks of Spiritual Giftings being used to edify the body and discribes positions as elders and pastors so we know that there was participation of members and there were leaders. It speaks of doing things orderly so that we know that their meetings were not caotic. However, I doubt that they followed a strict routines found on a bulletins.Members were family in Christ and were full of love with developing fruits.Probably nothing like 1st century.
