Why is it I only feel God's presence with me at times of trouble and not any other time?

"Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted" One has more of a tendency & inclination to seek the comfort of the LORD during times of trouble. Father does not dwell in temples made with hands, He dwells within us & comforts us from the inside out. These times bring up & out of us all that is within us for our examination, empowering us during this humbling time to identify & repent of those things within us that opposes who we are in Christ. We become more aware of His presence.

The lord says in his holy word that he would never leave nor forsake you. The lord dwells in your soulish man which includes your spiritual heart which is the real you, not the flesh suit that you have on. True, we get great feelings from the lord like peace, joy etc but when we walk in Holiness,we stay close to him.Sin severs our relationship, repentance connects us with the lord again. It is not about feeling, it is about fellowship which brings great feelings.

God is right there at our becken call. He never leaves us. We feel him the most when we need him, is because we really need him. When all hell breaks loose around me, I want God to hold me while I cry. Most people don't call upon God unless they need him, use him as a crutch. And when their life is fine, they put him on the back burner until they need him again. God will comfort those who worship him all the time more than he would those that half way worship him.

I think it is because when things are going well for us we can tend to forget about the presence of the Lord. When we are in trouble we then draw near to Him and He draws near to us (James 4:8) and that is when we can feel His presence. Flesh is the problem.

How little we know. There are scriptures where God's men complained of God disappearing it seemed in midst of trouble.

Catherine, if you wish to feel God's presence more then make some time to worship Him. Maybe before you go to bed. You can lie down or kneel it doesn't matter. Just worship Him and praise Him. Say "praise the lord", "God is good", "Without the Lord I am nothing", "He is my shield", "He is my salvation", "Thank you for dying for me", "Praise you Lord".

Everytime I worship Him I feel His presence. I hope you do to. God bless.

Cathrine .::True love comes from the heart which is controlled by the Mind Jesus understands if others dont. The innermost recesses of your heart, which has a direct flow to the Brain I believe the Pulmoray Artery.

Psalms 46:10 is your answer. You appear to lack the in depth experience of knowing God's presence. Not an easy task--but there is a path, but first learn to be still and know he is GOD. For a deeper understanding, contact me.

Hi, Catherine . . . well, you may need an extra boost, in trouble; so God might make Himself more obvious; but He's nicely quiet > so, in your better times when you may be busy in your mind and feelings with things nicer for you, sister > that busy stuff may keep you from noticing the LORD, who is deeper than all that stuff, AND so nicer and better > so, since this can be ME > I trust God to make me more sensitive to Him, ALL the time.

**However, i was told to pray with my heart, not my head**

You were mistaught, catherine.

Jesus said to love God with ALL your faculties, INCLUDING your mind (head).

Who is right: your instructor or Jesus?

Leon, Leon, MY, MY, you are so religious.

Hi Catherine; I can definitely vouch for the fact that God CAN AND DOES MINISTER in hard times! :) I've been having a very difficult time lately with the faith/feelings issue and was beginning to get very discouraged, but God really came in and blew me away with comfort! :) He is a great God; just keep seeking, dear. :)

Dear Gary and Leon, thank you for you encouragement. However, i was told to pray with my heart, not my head. God knows your heart, not the words coming out without meaning. So I find it hard to "pray without ceasing" when i cant feel His presence. it feels like dead empty words...i KNOW God is with me, but i dont FEEL Him with me...but i will continue to keep trying. thank you :)

Catherine: Feelings are good, are natural; but, frequently are very misleading. God has not made to live by our feelings alone. We're to live by faith (trust)in Him.

Gary L's comments are right on! Study, meditate & pray to God. (Ro.10:17, 2 Tim 2:15)

Get up close & personal with God (read the Bible, learn to lean, depend on & trust what He says)& He will reciprocate. (Jas. 4:8)

Catherine, I think for many of us it is just the opposite. I was a little envious when reading question :)

Many times it is because that is the only time that people call upon the Lord. The rest of the time they aren't concerned with God. Just when they need something from Him.

Could it be that when everything is going just great that we tend to ignore God to a great extent, not needing him like we do in tough times? If that could be the case with you then discipline yourself to have some regular times of prayer and reading. Make sure you are doing things for others as this will also help the feelings of his presence to come to you.

thank you for replying. when i am in great need of Him i feel so safe and comforted. i guess i want to feel His presence like that all the time. I feel guilty that my prayers are not heartful enough when i dont call on His strength.
---catherine on 6/25/07

I do not know. With me it is just the opposite.
---catherine on 6/25/07

Catherine, I would suggest daily prayer and Scripture reading. This puts you in communion with God. Like Paul said, we must "pray without ceasing." God will also speak to you through his Word. I hope this helps.

Perhaps God is drawing especially close to you during the bad times to give you comfort and strength?
---maryj9396 on 6/24/07

At least you are aware of God in times of trouble. So many are not. Consider yourself especially blessed in this regard.

Remember the poem FOOTPRINTS. Where there was just one set, God was carrying you.
---Jack on 6/24/07

When things are great and we are calm and content, your senses may not be as open to the presence of the Holy Spirit. For some, they may have stopped praying and even have forgotten God entirely. But for others who are faithful but simply do not feel anything, faith comes into play. We cannot rely upon feelings. Remember that the Holy Spirit is the Comforter. In times of need He is our Comfort. Remember, draw close to God and He will draw close to you.
