Condoning Church's Teachings

If I am attending a church that has teachings that are clearly unscriptural, am I guilty of at least condoning what that church is teaching? For example I'm going to a Episcopalian Church. This church board agrees to same-sex marriage. What should I do, stay in the church or get out.

Moderator - It's a hard question I must ask myself everyday as almost all churches today have at least some false doctrines. Are you winning people to Christ in that local church?

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler -- not even to eat with such a one. (English Standard Version)

Hi Mima. We can read in scripture what happens to "the leaders" who go against Yahueh. For what would appear as poss minor transgression leprosy, and major, which an abomination surely is, they died with the ground swollowing them up. Them and their families. These men should read Mat 23:13 They stop "mankind" from finding out about Yahueh.

Hi John. I think you missed the point. As you say our Saviour mixed with them, and he was called a wine bibber / drunkard. This was used for Mima as an analogy of how even if you arn't involved when mud is thrown it can stick. We all know we are told to maintain a good name as it is precious.
John please reread 1 Cor 5 and explain your views against v11 where it is telling us plainly not to mix with our brothers if they are fornicators, drunkards etc. Mima question was about a brother.

Yes Mary - I used to smoke 4 packs a day and one of the things I would do is remind myself I was not a smoker.
I'm never sure about the positive confession stuff except that I'd rather confess good then evil on myself.
Be blessed you are not a drunk - you are a child of the living God!!!! Praise the Lord!

Hi Susie, thank you, I do see your points--very true. Gives me something to think about tonight when I go to my weekly Celebrate Recovery meeting--bless you. :) I will ask about that tonight, God bless :)
---Mary on 8/30/07

Mary...I commend you for not drinking. But, the word drunkard is used in the Bible, not the word alcoholic. Personally, I think people should not call themselves alcoholics or addicts as that is opening up for the Devil to keep them that way. My husband was a drunken, bar fighter before the Lord saved him and called him into the ministry. Jesus is the deliverer.

Part 2: Just to make it clear, I'm no longer trapped in alcoholism--praise God! :) I still sometimes have cravings but I know--one drink and I'm a dead woman!
---Mary on 8/30/07

Toby. Jesus mixed it up with drunkards and sinners so he could win them. I've done this for 22 years myself and won hundreds to the Lord this way. I wonder how many you win with your phylosophy?
Paul said in 1 Cor.5 that if you were to separate from all these people you would have to go out of this world. I think you are overprotecting yourself at the expense of many others' salvation.

You should definitely get out of that church. Any church that teaches that same-sex marriage is alright is of the devil and is apostate. Run as fast as you can.
---Helen_5378 on 8/30/07

Hi Toby, I see your point to Mima--very true. May I ask, though, nicely, that you refrain from referring to alcoholics as "drunks"? :) I know it's basically the truth, but it's painful enough to be trapped in addiction without being labeled "a drunk", just my own opinion, thanks :)
---Mary on 8/30/07

Hi Mima.Scripture tells us 1Th 5:22 Abstain from the appearance of evil. eg if you mix with drunks people will think you are one. Abstain means to hold oneself off. Read 1 Cr 6:18 "flee" to flee away, seek safety by flight. metaph. to flee (to shun or avoid by flight) something abhorrent, esp. vices. Some sins are blatent, flee, dont give the world the chance to label you also as one who accepts their conduct. This is not talking about a scripture difference, this is abhorrent to Yahueh and us.

I have come to the conclusion that no church is going to be perfectly aligned with every thinking individual's beliefs (such as different views on the Rapture.) However, if something is clearly in opposition to the Bible, then you must leave that church and tell them why you are leaving!

The enemy could not destroy all the Holy Bibles in the land, though he tried his best to do so more than once, therefore he found another way which is working wonderful iniquity: for as people replace the Holy Bible with ever increasing new and popular unholy bibles in the pulpits and pews, apostate churches will increase wonderfully. Yet good news, I seen the Thanksgiving Bible, the 1560 Geneva Bible, is going to be on the market in 2 months. Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus!

First of all, I would tell them in love what their teaching is wrong and show them by using God's Holy word. Chances are you're going to make alot mad and they will ask you to leave. But at least you told them the truth, and that is all you can do. If they do not take heed to God's word, their blood is on their hands.
---Rebecca_D on 8/29/07

I could never... ever... stay in that church...
---Gayla on 8/29/07

You could say the same thing for every church. It is up to each person to search for the truth because truth is the ONLY thing that will set you free! As to a good answer to this question, read "The Spirit of the Church" (by D. Neufeld and Sterling).

I don't know how we change things if we leave them but if staying is condoning - come out come out!
I certainly wouldn't support them financially. Then they'd probably throw you out anyway.
In a sense they may be throwing out the committed Christians as it is.
---Andrea on 8/29/07

If you know for a fact that the church you attend is adding unto the church what God is against, then it's better to leave the church then get scorned by God. & accepting same~sex is against scripture.
---candice on 8/29/07

Hi Mima, I would RUN from that Church as fast as I could. I know that there is no perfect church, but I also know that God's word calls us to be Holy and separate.God does not "wink" at sin so why should we? Anyone that is in a church that condones such things should flee "quickly" and find a church that teaches and preaches Godly truth and morals.
---Cynthia on 8/29/07

Mima, thanks for clarifying - you had me wondering there for a minute :)

I can't imagine why any Christian who is on fire for the Lord and trying to win souls for the Lord who would stay in a church that is blatantly teaching false doctrine and condoning sin.
---Susie on 8/29/07

To moderator -of course I was just using the Episcopalian Church as an example I of course do not and never have went to an Episcopalian Church but I do know what they believe.
---Mima on 8/29/07

Yes! Your faith in Christ will be tested in many ways. Jesus should be on the throne of your heart. If you can't leave a church that is clearly condoning sin in order to be in right standing with the World. Then that Church has become your god.
