ANN I hope that you noticed that I said if the law of the land says that bigamy is an offence then it IS an offence. By that I was referring to the land that the questioner lives in and presumably she knows what the law of her own land has to say on the subject. She asked for our opinions on this subject and we can each only answer according to our own knowledge. She might know something that we don't.

Rita, your right I will agree with u, but u don't know where this person is from and actually u are to obey God's law first, but anyways if she is in another country that allows bigomy then she doesn't have anything to stand on, if she is in the states then yes she has rights.

And it was only a question that I put. Personally why would anybody want more than one wife? but it also has to depend on where the husband is from and his custom is because he could be here to get another wife and go back to his country with her that does allow more than one wife.

ANN the bible tells us that we are to obey the law of the land in which we live, unless it contadicts God's law. If the law of the land says that bigamy is an offence then it IS an offence. The bible does not say that a man MUST have more than one wife does it?

I agree with you. There is nothing in the New Testament (or old) that prohibits bigamy (other than for bishops).

On the other hand, we are exhorted to obey the law (and in the US at least, bigamy is illegal). Also custom is paramount (When Jacob was cheated out of his chosen wife "because it was not the custom" to marry off a younger daugher first, he did not complain - he worked 7 more years for the second wife - because custom was more important than his marriage agreement.

yes, it is right to divorce a two-timing skunk. And I apologize for insulting all the real furry skunks, whom are even more faithful then that abuser.

Ann. I agree with you that it doesn't say in the Bible that you can't have more than one wife but in the Bible were a man had more than one it was by consent of the other wife/wives. It was known ahead of time. This lady was deceived by a man whom she was led to believe to be single. This is not at all comparable to a multiple marriage in the Bible. This is adultery and deceit.

1) its the law of the land
2) its immoral to take up with a woman when you have a wife
3) I challenge you to show me where in scripture it says a woman can't have a dog for a husband!

---Andrea on 9/10/07

I challange every Christian who has responded, to show me the scripture where it is a sin to marry more than one wife?

A friend of ours married a man from another country after we counseled her that he could possibly have a wife and family in his homeland. He did. She was given an annulment. A divorce is not necessary if deceit was involved.

I wonder how long this wife will stay in the same house with the man.
---Susie on 9/10/07

Yes, see a lawyer: THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY
---John_T on 9/10/07

See a lawyer before you just go away and think your not married. He still has those papers.
Biblically it is adultery
---Andrea on 9/10/07

If you are the first wife then your husband has committed adultery (as well as bigamy which is an imprisonable offence). Adultery is grounds for divorce - biblically. If you are the other 'wife' you are not legally married and can (and should) walk away. Whichever one you are you might be required to give evidence against him in court.
---RitaH on 9/10/07

Why, that's bigamy!!!! BIGAMY!!! It's big o' me!! And it's big o' you!! It's big o' all of us!!!!!
---berf on 9/10/07

In this case, the marriage would not be valid and, therefore, divorce may not even be necessary. The woman would be free to marry without any hindrance.

If your husband had married someone else and was still married to you when you got married, then (at least anywhere in the USA) such a marriage is not valid in the first place.

If you're the second wife, you don't need to get a divorce because you were never really married in the first place. An annulment should be sufficient. (but please consult an attorney for proper legal advice on this).

If you're the first wife in such a situation, then it's the same as any other situation of adultery.
---StrongAxe on 9/9/07

Not only is it illegal, it is Biblically adultry. Yes, divorce.
---jody_martin on 9/9/07

If your husband was already married to someone when he married you then your marriage isn't legal and you shouldn't even have to divorce him. Unless you wish to stay with him, I would say you have every right to go your way. You have been deceived.

Bigamy is certainly against the law. As far as getting a divorce, is this man having a relationship with both wives, or is it he just never got divorced from the first wife? Either one is hurtful, but I would say that if he is carrying on both relationships, then absolutely, because that is adultery. Jesus told us that was the only grounds for divorce. Also, has he been charged by the police for this? Or has it even been reported? I certainly would have a lot of trouble ever trusting this man again.

I beleive you have a huge green light saying GET OUT quick, That is definately grounds for Biblical Divorce spoken of in 1st Corinthians chapter 6 and 7.
---Whisper on 9/9/07

If the man you were suspose to be married to already had a wife you weren't legally married and there would be no reason for divorce. You should report him to the police, this may be a racket he pulls on women to rob them of their money. He needs to be stopped, besides it is wrong for a Christian not to report a crime. Pray God for strength and leave him,let God find you a Christian.

I think you should seek pastoral guidance on this, as well as speak with a lawyer.

If you are the second one the person married, without knowing it...the person may qualify for jail. And the person's vows were a fraud, so I'd say you aren't even married. The person has no say or claim on you. If you and he have kids, there are legal things for this, to settle however you do. I'd say pray and share with God and do what He satisfies you to do. Being honest, because this will be worth it. And handle this in agreement with a sound group of Christian people, together, not by yourself.
