I used to be a fan of "Forensic Files", just because I love a good whodunit. But recently, I've had to honestly acknowledge some of the lurid stuff that these kinds of shows openly portray...horrific photos of murdered bodies, demonic mugshots of criminals, gruesome details of sexual sin and other stuff that I really don't want to let into my life.
Not going to say that it's a blatant sin...but it's definitely not the healthiest thing to be investing your time and mental energy into.

I have learned much from these crime shows. I've seen the devil work his schemes, truth can be twisted and shaped to be whatever a person wants it to be. We can be deceived by allowing certain things and people into our lives. Sad how many young people have disappeared because they were drunk and alone. I've used many stories to warn others of the dangers/evil lurking around us. The nature of man without God is horrific! Moderation is key... for some, abstinence, we are so different. The Word is unchangeable truth, our guide. Let's ask for a discerning spirit. Seek Him, and we won't have to ask others.

What about Comissioner Rex? It's about a police German Shepherd, who help the police track down criminals, also help to some people from oppression. Of course I do not watch every day, but from time to time. Of course I know that might by vulgarism or bad scene. To avoid it I do it this way, first I listen to the dialogues (the series I watch on the Internet) and check when the vulgar word will come out. Then as soon as I watch really, then at the right moment I mute the sound. But if you see that it is getting ready
Inadequate scene, I'm scrolling forward. On tv if they have to censor text is also after all must know it. In addition, in such series are discussed such issues as domestic violence, drugs, alcoholism, rape, etc.

I keep my radio going, humans have to "socialize "I think that how they say it. People have to hear or talk to someone. It can get to you. I agree.
I can not view a regular TV the way my vision is at this point. I have special HTL glasses higher detail for see on here. I also have a mic but, it fails alot. My voice too.deep ha! ha!

Hello,in my opinion it's not a crime. Lots of times, these shows let you know how to take care of a situation you may encounter.. hopefully NOT but yes, crime is rampant worldwide.
Last night I saw a movie where the little kids ran when they knew their parents were in serious danger, they made ZERO noise, the sister bout 8 yrs old, said " let's hide behind the couch! the 3 little ones hid while alot of bad things went on managed grab a cell fon & called "Police"
They lost mom & dad but got away!
---Lidia4796 on 11/21/13|
I do not believe being a cop is a sin...I see it as protecting good. I see it as if you are not a warrior of God in heaven but you are a warrior of God on earth. You are inforcing the Law of which man believes to be good. Even if it seems like you are ruining the time of a couple friends smoking marijuana you are actully saving them from entering a world of which God did not intend man to enter...Unrelaity. You are protecting and serving. I don't believe there is anything wrong with that what so ever. If you are a crooked, this is an entirely different matter.

Mathew: No one says being Cop is a sin yet you make that conclusion. Why?

Why is it we get so bent out of shape over something so petty as watching a crime drama on TV? If you don't want to watch those programs don't, but don't get so judgemental on those who do and enjoy those shows. I absolutely love CSI and Criminal Minds. They are interesting and make me wish I could do something like that.
---Katie on 11/9/07|
Some are saying being a cop is a sin? Imagine a world without crime fighters. Do you think we would be better off? The answer is no. There are some surgerys that are necessary. A shard of medal in your body comes to mind. If you pray for God to remove that shard from your body his response would be "Go to a doctor."
---Matthew_from_LA on 11/8/07|
Some have made their own righteousness which surpasses even the rightesousness of God. Calling things sin that aren't sin. Calling things evil that aren't evil. It's righteousness according to them and not righteousness according to God. They don't seek the knowledge of God, rather, they assume things and believe it. They may condemn others for things God does not condemn people for.
---Matthew_from_LA on 11/8/07|
They call most if not everything secular sinful. Is the game of backgammon a sin since it is secular(not inspired by God). The Happy Birthday song is secular. Secular does not mean evil. It just means "not spiritual, not religious, not sacred, from man and not God".
---Matthew_from_LA on 11/8/07|
The same principle can apply to the Bible.
In the film "A Clockwork Orange", the violent anti-hero Alex is in prison for murder and is befriended by a chaplain. He starts to avidly read the bible, especially the old testament, because it is full of stories of gluttony and adultery and rape and violence and murder.
It's possible to do the right thing for the wrong reasons, and not get any good out of it.
---StrongAxe on 11/8/07|
Yes, seventhseal, cops and such can become desensitized over time. That's because what they see is real.
Desensitization is the spiritual equivalent of getting a callous--it's a protection against something harmful that would otherwise cause an open wound.
But these shows are fiction.
And that's where the difference lies.
---Nancy on 11/7/07|
nancy: Perhaps, but...ask any Cop or Surgeon and they will tell you that eventually they become calloused, desensitized to the vice and to the gore. A "Seared conscience" is one that has become calloused.
---SeventhSeal on 11/7/07|
If the watcher is 'getting off' on watching murder, yes, it's a sin.
But if the watcher is appreciating the processes of understanding how the human body works (albeit by understanding how it stopped working) and of the scientific seeking of justice, watching itself is not a sin.
(Though it might be just a touch slothful, if the watcher is using the TV to avoid doing necessary work. But that's another blog.)

Seventhseal: I just proved my point, buy your reply. Reading that verse doesn't tell me that smoking is a sin. It does not tell me that I am going to hell. Cause I know that I know, that I am going to heaven. Rita: You need to read Romans 6:14-23. If God shows you something that is wrong, than it is wrong. God hasn't showed me that smoking is wrong. Yes I have asked many times. Because I want to be sure. No your not condemning me, only God can do that.
---Rebecca_D on 11/3/07|
SeventhSeal: Right now, I don't want to quit smoking. I know I should for health reasons. But I don't want to. And God can't help someone if they aren't willing to help themselves. so their is no reason for me to ask God to help me quit smoking, when it isn't my desire.

Schticks can carry you to the middle, but a person's belief systems usually push them over to the other side.
---Bob on 11/2/07|
Rebecca, those people usually DO KNOW that their actions are wrong - they simply do not care. I think that you are living in cloud-cuckoo-land regarding your ideas of what is sin and what is not. Even the things you say about smoking are vague because on some blogs you defend it with your 'what is wrong for you is not wrong for me' quote and in others you obviously seek help with this habit. I don't wish to condemn you I just wish you would stop fooling yourself in this way.
---RitaH on 11/2/07|
I watch these shows because they are about getting justice for victims, not justifying murder. And if someone is watching these shows because they are fascinated with murder, then they need help. The thing is, Law and Order and others like it have good messages. I am curious, for those who think it is a sin to view these shows, what do you watch?
---Kella3336 on 11/2/07|
Rebecca: 1Cor3:16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy, for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are"
Hmmm your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit and you defile it with cigarettes?
Now you know. Now its a sin.
---SeventhSeal on 11/1/07|
Rita, To those people if they steal, lie, cheat, kill it may not be wrong or a sin unto them. If God doesn't reveal his truth to someone, what they do isn't a sin. Like me smoking. I do not believe it is a sin. People believes that it is, but yet God has to show me himself, cause I don't listen to what people thinks is wrong. If I did listen, I couldn't leave my house.
---Rebecca_D on 11/1/07|
Rebecca "If a person doesn't feel bad or isn't condemned about watching shows like Law and Order or The Closer, shows like that, then it isn't a sin." There are people who steal, rape and murder who 'do not feel bad about it' - does that make their actions something other than SIN?

Hi Mima, I can see your point, but the reason I usually am drawn to a crime show is the fascination of technology to catch "the bad guy"! :) One of my favorites is about a guy who hates being who he is, but he uses it for good--fighting crime and finding victims alive.
---Mary on 10/29/07|
Carnal man has a fascination with murder! These shows are about murder, violence, chaos, and as such are very appealing to the carnal fleshly nature. Among my Christian friends I know of not one who is not completely appalled by these programs.
---Mima on 10/29/07|
If a person doesn't feel bad or isn't condemned about watching shows like Law and Order or The Closer, shows like that, then it isn't a sin. But if a person watches TV shows and feels bad, then yeah turn off the TV. But if a person spends more time watching TV shows rather than with God, they've got a problem. SeventhSeal: Just because you think or believe it to be wrong for one to watch TV, that doesn't mean it is wrong for everybody else.
---Rebecca_D on 10/27/07|
Adam: I've read the Bible cover to cover. Try it. And No, the Bible does not go over and over into the horrid graphic detail like that which you love to see on the evening news, on tv, in movies, and video games
The Bible uses simple words to make the point without glorifying in disgusting detail.
---SeventhSeal on 10/25/07|
"The Bible does not dwell nor go into disgusting graphic detail over and over again regarding what happened that day."
Um...actually it does. Read the Old Testament. It's good stuff. I promise you'll like it.
"The news does that"
Um...so you're saying it happens in reality but we are to ignore it as believers? Ignore the reality of crime and violence surrounding us?
---Adam on 10/25/07|
Adam et,al: The Bible does not dwell nor go into disgusting graphic detail over and over again regarding what happened that day. The News does that, movies do that, TV does that. Why fill your mind with crap when you can fill it with the Word of God most have never read cover to cover? Folks refuse Bible counsel and cry "Woe is me. I cant keep from sin"
They cant Keep from sin because they made provision for it. Instead of fleeing sin most crawl away hoping it catches up to them again.
---SeventhSeal on 10/24/07|
We should not read most of Scripture because there are many sinful actions and details about them in Scripture, according to your logic. It is all about maturity, and the intent of why you are watching/reading/listening to it.
---Adam on 10/24/07|
Mary: The Point is not to dwell upon it. Longer you engage in observing sin, especially those appealing to carnal senses, the more apt you are to engage in them. Those that disgust at first no longer disgust if you see or hear them continually: you become desensitized to violence, lust etc
God designed us as addicts. Wonderful when Love was the way. When sin entered that blessing became curse. Satan is adept at wrapping sin in pleasant packages, especially when we are desensitized below abhorrance
---SeventhSeal on 10/24/07|
It is only a sin if God himself showed you it is a sin. If he has showed others it is a sin, and not you. That was for them, not for you. They can share their comments but God don't work on everybody at the same time on the same thing. If a person feels bad or feels convicted about whatever their doing, it is a sin. Plain and simple.

Isa33:15 "He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly, he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and SHIUTTETH HIS EYES FROM SEEING EVIL, He shall dwell on high"

The reason why your friends are no longer following God is because that is a choice they chose to make. If someone puts the blame on tv for messing up their walk with God, is just looking for an excuse to quite. Whisper: People can do all those things without watching TV. So what is your point? If someone turns their back on God, the only person to blame are themselves, not everything else around them.
---Rebecca_D on 10/22/07|
The more you get to know Jesus the less you will want to watch TV and its unholy influences:
"By Beholding we are changed"
Choose wisely which you will behold.

There are people who have no regard for human life and there are hard working people who make it possible for these individuals to pay the price. It is this reason I watch these shows.
---Kella336 on 10/21/07|
Andrea, I do not understand why you made that comment that maybe I should get off the internet: garbage in, garbage out, as you stated. What do you think that I view? And did I say anything to deserve that response? I was saying that the internet can be a sin for some. What do I view? I go to Christian sites. What do I do with a lot of my time? I read scripture. And for everyone else: Simply, I posted a blog question and have responded like everyone on here Please....I am not obsessed with tv.
---Kella3336 on 10/21/07|
Andrea I am very sorry that I reacted that way(I am posting this right afterwards). I guess I was assuming that even though you said if, you thought the worst. You were giving Godly advice. Right after I responded I felt bad because you were only showing concern. I reacted badly. And to anyone else, if I have offended you, I am sorry. God bless!
---Kella3336 on 10/21/07|
When I used the phrase, road to hell, I was responding to: will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. I Believe sin is sin for everyone. However, because of some peoples weakness, there things that make them sin, things that would not be a problem for others. Sin is putting anything ahead of God(shoppingfor eg). Shopping itself is not a sin. But it can be.Now murder, stealing, etc...those are sin for all.
---Kella3336 on 10/21/07|
I personally enjoy crime dramas.
The bottom line should be - how do they affect you? Do they edify you? Do you learn something? Do they make you a better person, or a worse person?
Such shows are typically about a search for truth (a good thing) and not about glorifying crime (a bad thing).
If someone objects that such shows show crime, they might as well throw out their bible, because it is full of descriptions of sin and idolatry and violence and murder and rape and incest, etc.
---StrongAxe on 10/20/07|
Here's a tactic to try. Watch TV and as soon as a sin is glorified turn it off for 10 Minutes.
Soon you will not be watching any TV at all.
The GoodNews is that you will then have time to read the Whole Bible Adrea.

Sin is what the Bible defines it to be.
Humans can't make that determination without the convicting power of God.
This is the age old deception that leads right back to the deception in the garden.
Go ahead. Surely you won't die.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and will lead you into truth. Right from wrong, light from dark, good from evil. It's not tailored to each individual. It's the same across the board for all.

Kella...Regarding your being on your way to hell because of watching these kinds of shows, I noticed that the only posts which contain the word Hell are your own. If you are under conviction for watching these kinds of shows, perhaps you should think about fasting from them for awhile. I enjoy watching these kinds of shows at times, but we go days without even turning on our television at our house. The problem is not in what is being watched, but in what the reasons for watching them are.

Cont. However what may be a sin for one person may not be for another, such as the internet. It depends on what it is used for. And crime tv can be a sin if the viewer is siding with the criminals.

I have had friends who share the same attitude as those who feel these shows are sinful and now they are no longer walking with God. Sad. I am not saying that those on here will end up like that. If you really think the TV show might corrupt you, then turn the channel to "bambie" or perhaps get rid of the so-called "evil thing" out of your house altogether. Or maybe you should live in a bare house with 4 empty walls, and no TV or radio or telephone or electricity, or maybe go live on a secluded island with no other humans.

I love the CSI shows and once considered becoming either a crime scene investigator or a forensic pathologist (I also loved watching Quincy, years ago). A concern is that so many of these shows are on the air and so much detail is given that I worry that we are educating future criminals to be better at their craft.
The bigger concern is that we might be getting too much into the lurid details and risk exposing our selves to sin by becoming desensitised to it. Avoid shows that glorify sinfulness.
